  • download speed is fast but transfer rate is slow

    I've just changed ISP and I'm pretty disappointed with the transfer rate. My previous connection has a download speed of 1.08 Mb/s as seen from this site: http://speedtest.net and the download transfer rate is about 100kb/s for sites that doesn't limit their bandwidth. Now my connection has about 2Mb/s download speed but the transfer rate is dancing from 20-50kb/s . I was expecting a speed much higher than this because of the download speed that I'm getting when I'm testing. The question is what's the difference between transfer rate and download speed, is it normal to have a high download speed but low transfer rate, should the download speed be proportional to the transfer rate?

  • Wget - if / else download condition?

    I want wget to prefer a certain filetype over another, if the files have the same basename. For example: if foo.ogg available, don't download foo.mp3 the way i use wget so far to crawl/automatically download (if anyone is interested): wget -Dfoo.com -I /folder/ -r -l 1 -nc -A.ogg,.mp3 -i http://www.foo.com/folder/ but this, of course, gets me .mp3 AND .ogg files. It often also gets me image files like .png which i didn't want in the first place, and discards them afterwards. Any Ideas? (Syntax-Explanation: -D: download only from this Domain -I: download only from this subfolder of Domain -r: recursive (follow links and directory structure) -l 1: follow only 1 link deep -nc: no clobber = download only if file doesn't exist -A: accept/download only all *.ogg and *.mp3 (discard necessary html-files) -i: download-url/starting point)

  • SQL SERVER – Download PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility

    During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012.   • Download resume support blocked by isp?

    Can ISP block resume support for downloads ? I'm using IDM (internet download manager) to download of the internet from resume supported websites, yet I am unable to resume downloads. I tried different computers with the same result. Turned off firewall, didn't have any effect i was able to download with no issues until a couple of days ago. Another thing i noticed is that before IDM used to try to connect to several connections to speed up my download, but now it can only connect to one connection. Also i tried to download using my vpn, and i was able to download and resume downloads with no problem.

  • Static file download from browser breaking in varnish but works fine in Apache

    I would at first like to thank everyone at serverfault for this great website and I also come to this site while searching in google for various server related issues and setups. I also have an issue today and so I am posting here and hope that the seniors would help me out. I had setup a website on a dedicated server a few days ago and I used Varnish 3 as the frontend to Apache2 on a Debian Lenny server as the traffic was a bit high. There are several static file downloads of around 10-20 MB in size in the website. The website looked fine in the last few days after I setup. I was checking from a 5mbps + broadband connection and the file downloads were also completed in seconds and working fine. But today I realized that on a slow internet connection the file downloads were breaking off. When I tried to download the files from the website using a browser then it broke off after a minute or so. It kept on happening again and again and so it had nothing to do with the internet connection. The internet connection was around 512 kbps and so it was not dial up level speed too but decent speed where files should easily download though not that fast. Then I thought of trying out with the apache backend port and used the port number to check out if the problem occurs. But then on adding the apache port in the static file download url, the files got downloaded easily and did not break even once. I tried it several times to make sure that it was not a coincidence but every time I was using the apache port in the file download url then it was downloading fine while it was breaking each time with the normal link which was routed through Varnish I suppose. So, it seems Varnish has somehow resulted in the broken file downloads. Could anyone give any idea as to why it is happening and how to fix the problem. For more clarification, take this example: Apache backend set on port 8008, Varnish frontend set on port 80 Now when I download say http://mywebsite.com/directory/filename.extension Then the download breaks off after a minute or so. I cannot be sure it is due to the time or size though and I am just assuming. May be some other reason too. But when I download using: http://mywebsite.com:8008/directory/filename.extension Then the file download does not break at all and it gets download fine. So, it seems that varnish is somehow creating the file download breaking and not apache. Does anybody have any idea as to why it is happening and how can it be fixed. Any help would be highly appreciated. And my varnish default.vcl is backend apache { set backend.host = "127.0.0.1"; set backend.port = "8008"; } sub vcl_deliver { remove resp.http.X-Varnish; remove resp.http.Via; remove resp.http.Age; remove resp.http.Server; remove resp.http.X-Powered-By; }

  • Resuming downloads in Firefox

    Unfortunately, Firefox still has failed to add the option to resume downloads. I've ran into this problem SO MANY times, and in my previous searches I found posts saying Firefox was going to fix that. As of 3.6.3 they haven't. I just tried Free Download Manager (FDM), again, having the Firefox addon Flashgot use it. The download gets passed to FDM, and fails, giving the error message "access denied, invalid username or password." No password was required. The site I'm trying to get the file from is turbobit.net, which limits downloads speeds to 100kb/sec, and has a 59 second countdown before you get the link. I guess it's transparently using a password on their end. If I just download normally (save to disk) the download starts fine, but it fails after 30 minutes to 1 hour (always different), and my Wi-fi connection will stop briefly - and I have to start all over. So I will never be able to download a large file. I also tried DTA instead of FMD with Flashgot, and I get an "access denied" message in DTA. Again, I reloaded - waited the 59 seconds, and download w/Firefox, and the download starts fine. The failure message in the Firefox Downloads window is "source file at http... could not be read." Any help would be greatly appreciated. When is Firefox going to finally add the ability to resume downloads????? Is there some other software I haven't found using Google that will work?

    Every time I download something using IE8 (running on Win 7) I get asked where to save the file, I choose my downloads folder, then the download continues and when complete I get the following message: "C:\ is not accessible. Access Denied." And I so I can't access any files I download. So why on earth would IE8 be trying to write to the root, and where can I change this?     I know about bittorrent but have never used it since it tends to be mostly used for illegal download of movies and software. Typically whenever I see a legitimate use for it (Linux distros) there is also a regular download option so I haven't had the need for a client until today. There is a large (500Mb) file I want to download that appears to only be accessible via bit torrent. For a one time use, is there an online resource that converts the torrent to a normal http no-special-client-software download? If not, what is an easy to use and light client to install/uninstall on WinXP for a one time use?

    hello, I'm just switching my hosts and I want to move the emails from my accounts too. In order to have my current emails on the new host I want to download/export them and to import at the other host. In order to do this I use one of the webmail (squirrelmail, roundcube, horde) clients available on my current host. The problem is that except for roundcube, I don't see any download/export option available. And in roundcube I can only select one email at a time and download it as eml. My question is how do I export/download all the emails from one account and import them at the new host? I know this is possible because I remember doing this some time ago using squirrelmail, but I can't find anything related to this now. Thank you.

    Both µTorrent and FlashGet are being throttled and I don't know why or how. I use both and they usually report a download speed of 70kbps for torrent speed. FlashGet would report a speed of 70kbps yet actually download at another speed which is about the same as the actual which is a consisten 70kbps. Now, all of a sudden, my torrent downloads are only up to 20kbps. FlashGet still shows a reading of 70kbps, maybe even 80kbps. But, the average actual speed of download is really only 20kbps. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and no matter where the internet is coming it's the same thing. I have no idea what could be limiting my download rates.

If I try to download the file again, it works properly. The problem seems prevalent in IE, although I've had it happen in Chrome sometimes too.     ? In my office, the network admin has restricted the download limit to a size of 1.8MB for any file. This is for sub ordinates accounts only. But for my manager's PC, there are no restrictions. Is there any way to download files from my PC by using my managers' ip address. I just tried using his ip on my pc but, had the same problem. ? Earlier I was given access to our Linux server from my pc using putty. Then I used to download large files on to the server and then transfer from server to my machine using fire ftp. This transfer worked perfectly fine. But, now I don't have any access to the server. So can I be able to download large files using fire ftp from my own PC ? I'm using Windows XP machine.   • Objective-C : Trouble with file download

    I ran in a bit of trouble downloading files with Objective-C. I use the download decideDestinationWithSuggestedFilename from Apples documentation page. http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/URLLoadingSystem/Tasks/UsingNSURLDownload.html As long as I want to download just one file it works fine but I want to download an array for files one by one. The problem starts with the second file. Right now my code will trigger the next download itself from the downloadDidFinish Method. Then I will get an unrecognized selector sent to instance error. For me it looks like the NSURLDownload that just finished the download is still in use somehow. Release is called but the must be a problem. If I just put an NSBeep in the downloadDidFinished Method and trigger the next file download manually it works fine. Looks like I have to wait a while till I can start the next download. I know this question is a bit vague but maybe someone got an idea.

    I watch the download speed rise and fall like waves in a storm. At night, during low bandwidth usage I have achieve speeds as high as 3.23 M/sec but the watch them decline to 250 K/sec. and then climb back up. Over and over. During the day my best is around 1.67 M/sec with lows into the 65 K/sec. On top of this, why does a download need to slow down when approaching the end of the download? It's not like a multi-hundred ton train needing to decrease speed as it approaches the station.

    I want to download live streaming video from some websites and it seems Internet Download Manager can handle the job. However, the video I want is just a small part of the live stream and the the stream itself never stops. Hence, IDM will just keep downloading all days and nights if I don't stop it myself. The problem is, the downloaded file (stored in the temporary folder) is of .stream extension. Mediaplayer Classic can open it perfectly, but it'd be very inconvenient to have such extension since I don't think I can carry it around and play it on other computer. I tried some video converters but all of them failed because the format is not supported. So my questions are: Is there a program specially made to download live rmtp video? IDM works, but the format is inconvenient. How can I convert .stream file to other extension, say AVI?

    I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date: /Downloads | |--/2012_06_28 | | | |--a.zip | |--b.pdf | ... | |--/2012_06_29 | | | |--c.txt | ... ... I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this? I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature. If there is a way to configure them to do that, I'll be happy to know about it. Thank you.
