  • DataBinding a DropDownList in ASP.NET MVC 2

    - by Daniel Coffman
    I'm extremely frustrated trying to switch to MVC after a couple years of webforms development. Here's my extremely simple problem that I can't manage to solve: I have a list of States in a table called StateProvince. I have a DropDownList. I want the DropDownList to display all of the States in the StateProvince table and post the selected state back on HTTP PUT. This is what I'm doing: <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model = model.StateProvinceId, new SelectList(Model.StateProvinces, "StateProvinceId", "Name") )% I'm getting an Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Why? How can I make this work? Keep it simple, I know nothing about MVC.

  • how do you reuse a partial view with different ids

    - by oo
    i have a partial view with a dropdown in it. the code looks like this: <%=Html.DropDownListFor(x => Model.Exercises, new SelectList(Model.Exercises, "Id", "Name", Model.SelectedExercise), new { @id = "exerciseDropdown", @class = "autoComplete" })%> the issue is that i want to reuse this partial view in multiple places but i want to have a different id assigned to the control (instead of exerciseDropdown always) but on the outside i only have this . . <% Html.RenderPartial("ExerciseList", Model); %> is there anyway to pass in an id into a partial view. should i stick this into my view model as a seperate property "Model.ExerciseDropdown2" for example. is there a better way ?

  • Best way of implementing DropDownList in ASP.NET MVC 2?

    - by Kelsey
    I am trying to understand the best way of implementing a DropDownList in ASP.NET MVC 2 using the DropDownListFor helper. This is a multi-part question. First, what is the best way to pass the list data to the view? Pass the list in your model with a SelectList property that contains the data Pass the list in via ViewData How do I get a blank value in the DropDownList? Should I build it into the SelectList when I am creating it or is there some other means to tell the helper to auto create an empty value? Lastly, if for some reason there is a server side error and I need to redisplay the screen with the DropDownList, do I need to fetch the list values again to pass into the view model? This data is not maintained between posts (at least not when I pass it via my view model) so I was going to just fetch it again (it's cached). Am I going about this correctly?

  • knockout.js with optionsValue and value

    - by Mike Flynn
    Is there a way to keep the value binding to the object, but have the optionsValue be a property on the object. As of now if I specify both, the optionsValue property that is selected will populate the value binding. Id like to keep the object intact in the observable, but specify what value to be set in the select list value. This way a form submit will send the optionsValue I chose. @Html.DropDownListFor(q => q.DivisionId, new SelectList(Enumerable.Empty<string>()), new { data_bind="options: divisions, optionsText: 'Name', optionsValue: 'Id', value: division, optionsCaption: ' - '" }) function AddCrossPoolGameDialog() { var self = this; self.divisions = ko.observableArray([]); self.division = ko.observable(); self.awayDivisionTeams = ko.computed(function () { var division = ko.utils.arrayFirst(self.divisions(), function(item) { return self.division.Name() == item.Name; }); if (division) { return division.DivisionTeamPools; } return []; }); }

  • Exit Infragistics, Enter Telerik

    - by Anthony Trudeau
    Today I made the purchase of the Premium Collection of components from Telerik.  This follows an evaluation I’ve been doing to replace the Infragistics components we currently use for Windows Forms, ASP.NET MVC, and WPF. It was not a formal evaluation.  I had already decided to move the company away from Infragistics.  That decision was mostly born out of frustration with support over using the Infragistics components in my first production MVC application. One such issue was a simple scenario where you have a model that has a scalar property that can be one value out of a list.  The built-in combobox does this, but I was told by Infragistics support that they didn’t support it – and it took them several emails and days of waiting between responses to determine that.  I implemented this in Telerik in a minute not including the several minutes it took me to get a rudimentary understanding for the component and its API. Here’s the code using the built-in combobox:@Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.VendorId, new SelectList(ViewBag.Vendors, "VendorId", "VendorName", Model.VendorId), "Select Id") Here’s the code using the Telerik combobox:@(Html.Telerik().ComboBoxFor(model => model.VendorId) .AutoFill(true) .BindTo(new SelectList(ViewBag.Vendors, "VendorId", "VendorName", Model.VendorId)) )   I chose Telerik over other competitors based on the professional appearance of their website, and how easy it was to find information.  I’d like to say I had time to evaluate other Infragistics competitors.  Due to time constraints I had to make an initial decision based on superficial, but still important things. I picked Telerik with the plan to only look further at other companies if my evaluation didn’t meet my expectations.  Luckily they did, because I didn’t relish the thought of carving out more time to evaluate another set of components. Overall my experience with Telerik has been superior to Infragistics in every way.  The installation was easy using their control panel installer application.  Getting up to speed has been easy.  And the communication from Telerik has met my expectations.  And we’ll continue to be good as long as I don’t start getting email messages from a sales rep saying that they want to talk to me about training and consulting – I’m looking at you Infragistics.

  • ASP.NET MVC DropDownList SelectedValue works on Edit action, but not Create action

    - by davekaro
    I have the following code in my controller (for Edit and Create): model.Templates = new SelectList(PageManagementService.PageTemplateFetchList(), "PageId", "Title", 213); the "213" is an Id for one of the pages - just using it for testing. And this is in my view (for Edit and Create): <%= this.Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Page.TemplateId, this.Model.Templates)%> <%= this.Model.Templates.SelectedValue %> When I go to the Create form, I see the dropdown list, but the tag with value="213" is not selected. I even output the SelectedValue to make sure it's 213 - and I see 213. When I go to the Edit form, I see the dropdown list, and the tag with value="213" is selected. On the Create form, none of the tags have a "selected" attribute. On the Edit form, the tag with value="213" has the "selected" attribute. Am I missing something? What could be causing this? Anyone see this behavior before?

  • ASP.NET MVC - Binding a Child Entity to the Model

    - by Nathan Taylor
    This one seems painfully obvious to me, but for some reason I can't get it working the way I want it to. Perhaps it isn't possible the way I am doing it, but that seems unlikely. This question may be somewhat related: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1274855/asp-net-mvc-model-binding-related-entities-on-same-page. I have an EditorTemplate to edit an entity with multiple related entity references. When the editor is rendered the user is given a drop down list to select related entities from, with the drop down list returning an ID as its value. <%=Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.Entity.ID)%> When the request is sent the form value is named as expected: "Entity.ID", however my strongly typed Model defined as an action parameter doesn't have Entity.ID populated with the value passed in the request. public ActionResult AddEntity(EntityWithChildEntities entityWithChildEntities) { } I tried fiddling around with the Bind() attribute and specified Bind(Include = "Entity.ID") on the entityWithChildEntities, but that doesn't seem to work. I also tried Bind(Include = "Entity"), but that resulted in the ModelBinder attempting to bind a full "Entity" definition (not surprisingly). Is there any way to get the default model binder to fill the child entity ID or will I need to add action parameters for each child entity's ID and then manually copy the values into the model definition?

  • How to add validation errors in the validation collection asp.net mvc?

    - by johndoe
    Inside my controller's action I have the following code: public ActionResult GridAction(string id) { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(id)) { // add errors to the errors collection and then return the view saying that you cannot select the dropdownlist value with the "Please Select" option } return View(); UPDATE: if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(id)) { // add error ModelState.AddModelError("GridActionDropDownList", "Please select an option"); return RedirectToAction("Orders"); } } UPDATE 2: Here is my updated code: @Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.SelectedGridAction, Model.GridActions,"Please Select") @Html.ValidationMessageFor(x => x.SelectedGridAction) The Model looks like the following: public class MyInvoicesViewModel { private List<SelectListItem> _gridActions; public int CurrentGridAction { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage = "Please select an option")] public string SelectedGridAction { get; set; } public List<SelectListItem> GridActions { get { _gridActions = new List<SelectListItem>(); _gridActions.Add(new SelectListItem() { Text = "Export to Excel", Value = "1"}); return _gridActions; } } } And here is my controller action: public ActionResult GridAction(string id) { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(id)) { // add error ModelState.AddModelError("SelectedGridAction", "Please select an option"); return RedirectToAction("Orders"); } return View(); } Nothing happens! I am totally lost on this one! UPDATE 3: I am now using the following code but still the validation is not firing: public ActionResult GridAction(string id) { var myViewModel= new MyViewModel(); myViewModel.SelectedGridAction = id; // id is passed as null if (!ModelState.IsValid) { return View("Orders"); }

  • ASP.NET MVC3 checkbox dropdownlist create [migrated]

    - by user95381
    i'm new in asp.net MVC and I/m use view model to poppulate the dropdown list and group of checkboxes. I use SQL Server 2012, where have many to many relationships between Students - Books; Student - Cities. I need collect StudentName, one city and many books for one student. I have next questions: 1. How can I get the values from database to my StudentBookCityViewModel? 2. How can I save the values to my database in [HttpPost] Create method? Here is the code: MODEL public class Student { public int StudentId { get; set; } public string StudentName { get; set; } public ICollection<Book> Books { get; set; } public ICollection<City> Cities { get; set; } } public class Book { public int BookId { get; set; } public string BookName { get; set; } public bool IsSelected { get; set; } public ICollection<Student> Students { get; set; } } public class City { public int CityId { get; set; } public string CityName { get; set; } public bool IsSelected { get; set; } public ICollection<Student> Students { get; set; } } VIEW MODEL public class StudentBookCityViewModel { public string StudentName { get; set; } public IList<Book> Books { get; set; } public StudentBookCityViewModel() { Books = new[] { new Book {BookName = "Title1", IsSelected = false}, new Book {BookName = "Title2", IsSelected = false}, new Book {BookName = "Title3", IsSelected = false} }.ToList(); } public string City { get; set; } public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> CityValues { get { return new[] { new SelectListItem {Value = "Value1", Text = "Text1"}, new SelectListItem {Value = "Value2", Text = "Text2"}, new SelectListItem {Value = "Value3", Text = "Text3"} }; } } } Context public class EFDbContext : DbContext{ public EFDbContext(string connectionString) { Database.Connection.ConnectionString = connectionString; } public DbSet<Book> Books { get; set; } public DbSet<Student> Students { get; set; } public DbSet<City> Cities { get; set; } protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<Book>() .HasMany(x => x.Students).WithMany(x => x.Books) .Map(x => x.MapLeftKey("BookId").MapRightKey("StudentId").ToTable("StudentBooks")); modelBuilder.Entity<City>() .HasMany(x => x.Students).WithMany(x => x.Cities) .Map(x => x.MapLeftKey("CityId").MapRightKey("StudentId").ToTable("StudentCities")); } } Controller public ActionResult Create() { return View(); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create() { //I don't understand how I can save values to db context.SaveChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } View @model UsingEFNew.ViewModels.StudentBookCityViewModel @using (Html.BeginForm()) { Your Name: @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.StudentName) <div>Genre:</div> <div> @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.City, Model.CityValues) </div> <div>Books:</div> <div> @for (int i = 0; i < Model.Books.Count; i++) { <div> @Html.HiddenFor(x => x.Books[i].BookId) @Html.CheckBoxFor(x => x.Books[i].IsSelected) @Html.LabelFor(x => x.Books[i].IsSelected, Model.Books[i].BookName) </div> } </div> <div> <input id="btnSubmit" type="submit" value="Submit" /> </div> </div> }

  • Kendo Grid: Foreign Key Dropdown does not update grid cell after update

    - by JookyDFW
    I have a Kendo MVC grid that contains a nullable property (short) that is bound as a foreign key and uses a dropdown list as an editor template. I am also using inline editing. When the property value is null, the dropdown list selected value does not get set into the grid cell after the update button is clicked. This works fine if incell editing is used. I am looking for a workaround that will solve my problem. I am including a stripped down version of my code below Everything works if the nullable value is set to a non-null value. GRID @(Html.Kendo().Grid<AssetViewModel>() .Name("DealAssets") .Columns(c => { c.Bound(x => x.Name); c.ForeignKey(x => x.AssetTypeID, (IEnumerable<SelectListItem>)ViewBag.AssetTypeList, "Value", "Text"); c.ForeignKey(x => x.SeniorityTypeID, seniorityTypeList, "Value", "Text").EditorTemplateName("GridNullableForeignKey"); c.ForeignKey(x => x.RateBaseID, rateBaseList, "Value", "Text").EditorTemplateName("GridNullableForeignKey"); ; c.Command(m => { m.Edit(); m.Destroy(); }); }) .ToolBar(toolbar => toolbar.Create().Text("Add New Asset")) .Editable(x => x.Mode(GridEditMode.InLine)) .DataSource(ds => ds .Ajax() .Model(model => model.Id(request => request.ID)) .Read(read => read.Action("ReadAssets", "Deal", new { id = Model.ID })) .Create(create => create.Action("CreateAsset", "Deal", new { currentDealID = Model.ID })) .Update(update => update.Action("UpdateAsset", "Deal")) .Destroy(destroy => destroy.Action("DeleteAsset", "Deal")) ) ) EDITOR TEMPLATE @model short? @{ var controlName = ViewData.TemplateInfo.GetFullHtmlFieldName(""); } @( Html.Kendo().DropDownListFor(m => m) .Name(controlName) .OptionLabel("- Please select -") .BindTo((SelectList)ViewData[ViewData.TemplateInfo.GetFullHtmlFieldName("") + "_Data"]) ) UPDATE ACTION public ActionResult UpdateAsset([DataSourceRequest] DataSourceRequest request, int ID) { var dealAsset = DataContext.DealAssets.SingleOrDefault(o => o.ID == ID); if (dealAsset != null) { if (TryUpdateModel(dealAsset.Asset, new[] {"Name","AssetTypeID","SeniorityTypeID","RateBaseID" })) { DataContext.SaveChanges(); } } return Json(new[] { new AssetViewModel(dealAsset) }.ToDataSourceResult(request, ModelState), JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); }

  • MVC2 Client validation with Annotations in View with RenderAction

    - by Olle
    I'm having problem with client side validation on a View that renders a dropdownlist with help of a Html.RenderAction. I have two controllers. SpecieController and CatchController and I've created ViewModels for my views. I want to keep it as DRY as possible and I will most probably need a DropDownList for all Specie elsewhere in the near future. When I create a Catch i need to set a relationship to one specie, I do this with an id that I get from the DropDownList of Species. ViewModels.Catch.Create [Required] public int Length { get; set; } [Required] public int Weight { get; set; } [Required] [Range(1, int.MaxValue)] public int SpecieId { get; set; } ViewModels.Specie.List public DropDownList(IEnumerable<SelectListItem> species) { this.Species = species; } public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Species { get; private set; } My View for the Catch.Create action uses the ViewModels.Catch.Create as a model. But it feels that I'm missing something in the implemetation. What I want in my head is to connect the selected value in the DropDownList that comes from the RenderAction to my SpecieId. View.Catch.Create <div class="editor-label"> <%: Html.LabelFor(model => model.SpecieId) %> </div> <div class="editor-field"> <%-- Before DRY refactoring, works like I want but not DRY <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.SpecieId, Model.Species) %> --%> <% Html.RenderAction("DropDownList", "Specie"); %> <%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.SpecieId) %> </div> CatchController.Create [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(ViewModels.CatchModels.Create myCatch) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { // Can we make this StronglyTyped? int specieId = int.Parse(Request["Species"]); // Save to db Catch newCatch = new Catch(); newCatch.Length = myCatch.Length; newCatch.Weight = myCatch.Weight; newCatch.Specie = SpecieService.GetById(specieId); newCatch.User = UserService.GetUserByUsername(User.Identity.Name); CatchService.Save(newCatch); } This scenario works but not as smooth as i want. ClientSide validation does not work for SpecieId (after i refactored), I see why but don't know how I can ix it. Can I "glue" the DropDownList SelectedValue into myCatch so I don't need to get the value from Request["Species"] Thanks in advance for taking your time on this.

  • MVC Partial View Not Refreshing when using JSON data

    - by 40-Love
    I have a dropdown that I'm using to refresh a div with checkboxes. I am trying to figure out why my view is not refreshing if I pass in data in JSON format. If I pass in just a regular string, the view refreshes. If I pass in JSON data, the view does not refresh. If I step through the code in the Partial view, I can see the correct number of records are being passed in, however the view doesn't get refreshed with the correct number of checkboxes. I tried to add some cache directives, it didn't work. This doesn't work: $(function () { $('#ddlMoveToListNames').change(function () { var item = $(this).val(); var selectedListID = $('#ddlListNames').val(); var checkValues = $('input[name=c]:checked').map(function () { return $(this).val(); }).toArray(); $.ajax({ url: '@Url.Action("Test1", "WordList")', type: 'POST', cache: false, data: JSON.stringify({ words: checkValues, moveToListID: item, selectedListID: selectedListID }), dataType: 'json', contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', success: function (result) { } }) .done(function (partialViewResult) { $("#divCheckBoxes").replaceWith(partialViewResult); }); }); }); This works: $(function () { $('#ddlMoveToListNames').change(function () { var item = $(this).val(); var selectedListID = $('#ddlListNames').val(); var checkValues = $('input[name=c]:checked').map(function () { return $(this).val(); }).toArray(); $.ajax({ url: '@Url.Action("Test1", "WordList")', type: 'POST', cache: false, data: { selectedListID: item }, success: function (result) { } }) .done(function (partialViewResult) { $("#divCheckBoxes").replaceWith(partialViewResult); }); }); }); Partial View: @model WLWeb.Models.MyModel <div id="divCheckBoxes"> @foreach (var item in Model.vwWordList) { @Html.Raw("<label><input type='checkbox' value='" + @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.Word) + "' name='c'> " + @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.Word) + "</label>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;"); } </div> Controller: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] [OutputCache(NoStore = true, Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "*")] public PartialViewResult Test1(MyModel vm, string[] words, string moveToListID, string selectedListID) { int listNameID = Convert.ToInt32(moveToListID); List<vwWordList> lst = db.vwWordLists.Where(s => s.Word.StartsWith("wa") && s.ListID == listNameID).ToList(); vm.vwWordList = lst; return PartialView("Partial1", vm); } View: @Html.DropDownListFor(x => Model.FilterViewModel.MoveToListNameID, Model.FilterViewModel.MoveToListNameList, new { @id = "ddlMoveToListNames", style = "width:100px;" })

  • C# mvc 3 using selectlist with selected value in view

    - by Rob
    I'm working on a MVC3 web application. I want a list of categories shown when editing a blo from whe applications managements system. In my viewmodel i've got the following property defined for a list of selectlistitems for categories. /// <summary> /// The List of categories /// </summary> [Display(Name = "Categorie")] public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Categories { get; set; } The next step, my controller contains the following edit action where the list of selectlistitems is filled from the database. public ActionResult Edit(Guid id) { var blogToEdit = _blogService.First(x => x.Id.Equals(id)); var listOfCategories = _categorieService.GetAll(); var selectList = listOfCategories.Select(x =>new SelectListItem{Text = x.Name, Value = x.Id.ToString(), Selected = x.Id.Equals(blogToEdit.Category.Id)}).ToList(); selectList.Insert(0, new SelectListItem{Text = Messages.SelectAnItem, Value = Messages.SelectAnItem}); var viewModel = new BlogModel { BlogId = blogToEdit.Id, Active = blogToEdit.Actief, Content = blogToEdit.Text, Title = blogToEdit.Titel, Categories = selectList //at this point i see the expected item being selected //Categories = new IEnumerable<SelectListItem>(listOfCategories, "Id", "Naam", blogToEdit.CategorieId) }; return View(viewModel); } When i set a breakpoint just before the view is being returned, i see that the selectlist is filled as i expected. So at this point everything seems to be okay. The viewmodel is filled entirely correct. Then in my view (i'm using Razor) i've got the following two rules which are supposed to render the selectlist for me. @Html.LabelFor(m => m.Categories) @Html.DropDownListFor(model=>model.Categories, Model.Categories, Model.CategoryId) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.Categories) When I run the code and open the view to edit my blog, I can see all the correct data. Also the selectlist is rendered correctly, but the item i want to be selected lost it's selection. How can this be? Until the point the viewmodel is being returned with the view everything is okay. But when i view the webpage in the browser, the selectlist is there only with out the correct selection. What am I missing here? Or doing wrong?

  • Retain a list of objects and pass it to the create/edit view when validation fails in ASP.NET MVC 2

    - by brainnovative
    I am binding a Foreign key property in my model. I am passing a list of possible values for that property in my model. The model looks something like this: public class UserModel { public bool Email { get; set; } public bool Name { get; set; } public RoleModel Role { get; set; } public IList<RoleModel> Roles { get; set; } } public class RoleModel { public string RoleName { get; set; } } This is what I have in the controller: public ActionResult Create() { IList<RoleModel> roles = RoleModel.FromArray(_userService.GetAllRoles()); UserModel model = new UserModel() { Roles = roles }; return View(model); } In the view I have: <div class="editor-label"> <%= Html.LabelFor(model => model.Role) %> </div> <div class="editor-field"> <%= Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Role, new SelectList(Model.Roles, "RoleName", "RoleName", Model.Role))%> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.Role)%> </div> What do I need to do to get the list of roles back to my controller to pass it again to the view when validation fails. This is what I need: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(UserModel model) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { // insert logic here } //the validation fails so I pass the model again to the view for user to update data but model.Roles is null :( return View(model); } As written in the comments above I need to pass the model with the list of roles again to my view but model.Roles is null. Currently I ask the service again for the roles (model.Roles = RoleModel.FromArray(_userService.GetAllRoles());) but I don't want to add an extra overhead of getting the list from DB when I have already done that.. Anyone knows how to do it?

  • DropDownList and SelectListItem Array Item Updates in MVC

    - by Rick Strahl
    So I ran into an interesting behavior today as I deployed my first MVC 4 app tonight. I have a list form that has a filter drop down that allows selection of categories. This list is static and rarely changes so rather than loading these items from the database each time I load the items once and then cache the actual SelectListItem[] array in a static property. However, when we put the site online tonight we immediately noticed that the drop down list was coming up with pre-set values that randomly changed. Didn't take me long to trace this back to the cached list of SelectListItem[]. Clearly the list was getting updated - apparently through the model binding process in the selection postback. To clarify the scenario here's the drop down list definition in the Razor View:@Html.DropDownListFor(mod => mod.QueryParameters.Category, Model.CategoryList, "All Categories") where Model.CategoryList gets set with:[HttpPost] [CompressContent] public ActionResult List(MessageListViewModel model) { InitializeViewModel(model); busEntry entryBus = new busEntry(); var entries = entryBus.GetEntryList(model.QueryParameters); model.Entries = entries; model.DisplayMode = ApplicationDisplayModes.Standard; model.CategoryList = AppUtils.GetCachedCategoryList(); return View(model); } The AppUtils.GetCachedCategoryList() method gets the cached list or loads the list on the first access. The code to load up the list is housed in a Web utility class. The method looks like this:/// <summary> /// Returns a static category list that is cached /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static SelectListItem[] GetCachedCategoryList() { if (_CategoryList != null) return _CategoryList; lock (_SyncLock) { if (_CategoryList != null) return _CategoryList; var catBus = new busCategory(); var categories = catBus.GetCategories().ToList(); // Turn list into a SelectItem list var catList= categories .Select(cat => new SelectListItem() { Text = cat.Name, Value = cat.Id.ToString() }) .ToList(); catList.Insert(0, new SelectListItem() { Value = ((int)SpecialCategories.AllCategoriesButRealEstate).ToString(), Text = "All Categories except Real Estate" }); catList.Insert(1, new SelectListItem() { Value = "-1", Text = "--------------------------------" }); _CategoryList = catList.ToArray(); } return _CategoryList; } private static SelectListItem[] _CategoryList ; This seemed normal enough to me - I've been doing stuff like this forever caching smallish lists in memory to avoid an extra trip to the database. This list is used in various places throughout the application - for the list display and also when adding new items and setting up for notifications etc.. Watch that ModelBinder! However, it turns out that this code is clearly causing a problem. It appears that the model binder on the [HttpPost] method is actually updating the list that's bound to and changing the actual entry item in the list and setting its selected value. If you look at the code above I'm not setting the SelectListItem.Selected value anywhere - the only place this value can get set is through ModelBinding. Sure enough when stepping through the code I see that when an item is selected the actual model - model.CategoryList[x].Selected - reflects that. This is bad on several levels: First it's obviously affecting the application behavior - nobody wants to see their drop down list values jump all over the place randomly. But it's also a problem because the array is getting updated by multiple ASP.NET threads which likely would lead to odd crashes from time to time. Not good! In retrospect the modelbinding behavior makes perfect sense. The actual items and the Selected property is the ModelBinder's way of keeping track of one or more selected values. So while I assumed the list to be read-only, the ModelBinder is actually updating it on a post back producing the rather surprising results. Totally missed this during testing and is another one of those little - "Did you know?" moments. So, is there a way around this? Yes but it's maybe not quite obvious. I can't change the behavior of the ModelBinder, but I can certainly change the way that the list is generated. Rather than returning the cached list, I can return a brand new cloned list from the cached items like this:/// <summary> /// Returns a static category list that is cached /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static SelectListItem[] GetCachedCategoryList() { if (_CategoryList != null) { // Have to create new instances via projection // to avoid ModelBinding updates to affect this // globally return _CategoryList .Select(cat => new SelectListItem() { Value = cat.Value, Text = cat.Text }) .ToArray(); } …}  The key is that newly created instances of SelectListItems are returned not just filtered instances of the original list. The key here is 'new instances' so that the ModelBinding updates do not update the actual static instance. The code above uses LINQ and a projection into new SelectListItem instances to create this array of fresh instances. And this code works correctly - no more cross-talk between users. Unfortunately this code is also less efficient - it has to reselect the items and uses extra memory for the new array. Knowing what I know now I probably would have not cached the list and just take the hit to read from the database. If there is even a possibility of thread clashes I'm very wary of creating code like this. But since the method already exists and handles this load in one place this fix was easy enough to put in. Live and learn. • ASP.NET MVC 2 Mdel encapsulated within ViewModel Validation

    - by Program.X
    I am trying to get validation to work in ASP.NET MVC 2, but without much success. I have a complex class containing a large number of fields. (Don't ask - this is oneo f those real-world situations best practices can't touch) This would normally be my Model and is a LINQ-to-SQL generated class. Because this is generated code, I have created a MetaData class as per http://davidhayden.com/blog/dave/archive/2009/08/10/AspNetMvc20BuddyClassesMetadataType.aspx. public class ConsultantRegistrationMetadata { [DisplayName("Title")] [Required(ErrorMessage = "Title is required")] [StringLength(10, ErrorMessage = "Title cannot contain more than 10 characters")] string Title { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage = "Forename(s) is required")] [StringLength(128, ErrorMessage = "Forename(s) cannot contain more than 128 characters")] [DisplayName("Forename(s)")] string Forenames { get; set; } // ... I've attached this to the partial class of my generated class: [MetadataType(typeof(ConsultantRegistrationMetadata))] public partial class ConsultantRegistration { // ... Because my form is complex, it has a number of dependencies, such as SelectLists, etc. which I have encapsulated in a ViewModel pattern - and included the ConsultantRegistration model as a property: public class ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel { public Data.ConsultantRegistration ConsultantRegistration { get; private set; } public SelectList Titles { get; private set; } public SelectList Countries { get; private set; } // ... So it is essentially ViewModel=Model My View then has: <p> <%: Html.LabelFor(model => model.ConsultantRegistration.Title) %> <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.ConsultantRegistration.Title, Model.Titles,"(select a Title)") %> <%: Html.ValidationMessage("Title","*") %> </p> <p> <%: Html.LabelFor(model => model.ConsultantRegistration.Forenames) %> <%: Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.ConsultantRegistration.Forenames) %> <%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(model=>model.ConsultantRegistration.Forenames) %> </p> The problem is, the validation attributes on the metadata class are having no effect. I tried doing it via an Interface, but also no effect. I'm beginning to think that the reason is because I am encapsulating my model within a ViewModel. My Controller (Create Action) is as follows: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(Data.ConsultantRegistration consultantRegistration) { if (ModelState.IsValid) // this is always true - which is wrong!! { try { consultantRegistration = ConsultantRegistrationRepository.SaveConsultantRegistration(consultantRegistration); return RedirectToAction("Edit", new { id = consultantRegistration.ID, sectionIndex = 2 }); } catch (Exception ex) { ModelState.AddModelError("CreateException",ex); } } return View(new ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel(consultantRegistration)); } As outlined in the comment, the ModelState.IsValid property always returns true, despite fields with the Validaiton annotations not being valid. (Forenames being a key example). Am I missing something obvious - considering I am an MVC newbie? I'm after the mechanism demoed by Jon Galloway at http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc-videos/video-10082.aspx. (Am aware t is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1260562/asp-net-mvc-model-viewmodel-validation but that post seems to talk about xVal. I have no idea what that is and suspect it is for MVC 1)

  • ASP.net MVC DropLownList db.SaveChanges not saving selection

    - by WMIF
    I have looked through a ton of tutorials and suggestions on how to work with DropDownList in MVC. I was able to get most of it working, but the selected item is not saving into the database. I am using MVC 3 and Razor for the view. My DropDownList is getting created with the correct values and good looking HTML. When I set a breakpoint, I can see the correct selected item ID in the model getting sent to controller. When the view goes back to the index, the DropDownList value is not set. The other values save just fine. Here are the related views. The DropDownList is displaying a list of ColorModel names as text with the ID as the value. public class ItemModel { [Key] public int ItemID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public virtual ColorModel Color { get; set; } } public class ItemEditViewModel { public int ItemID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public int ColorID { get; set; } public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Colors { get; set; } } public class ColorModel { [Key] public int ColorID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public virtual IList<ItemModel> Items { get; set; } } Here are the controller actions. public ActionResult Edit(int id) { ItemModel itemmodel = db.Items.Find(id); ItemEditViewModel itemEditModel; itemEditModel = new ItemEditViewModel(); itemEditModel.ItemID = itemmodel.ItemID; if (itemmodel.Color != null) { itemEditModel.ColorID = itemmodel.Color.ColorID; } itemEditModel.Description = itemmodel.Description; itemEditModel.Name = itemmodel.Name; itemEditModel.Colors = db.Colors .ToList() .Select(x => new SelectListItem { Text = x.Name, Value = x.ColorID.ToString() }); return View(itemEditModel); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(ItemEditViewModel itemEditModel) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { ItemModel itemmodel; itemmodel = new ItemModel(); itemmodel.ItemID = itemEditModel.ItemID; itemmodel.Color = db.Colors.Find(itemEditModel.ColorID); itemmodel.Description = itemEditModel.Description; itemmodel.Name = itemEditModel.Name; db.Entry(itemmodel).State = EntityState.Modified; db.SaveChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } return View(itemEditModel); } The view has this for the DropDownList, and the others are just EditorFor(). @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.ColorID, Model.Colors, "Select a Color") When I set the breakpoint on the db.Color.Find(...) line, I show this in the Locals window for itemmodel.Color: {System.Data.Entity.DynamicProxies.ColorModel_0EB80C07207CA5D88E1A745B3B1293D3142FE2E644A1A5202B90E5D2DAF7C2BB} When I expand that line, I can see the ColorID that I chose from the dropdown box, but it does not save into the database.

    I have a table with several @Html.dropdowlistfor in it. I was trying to read the selected value of using javascript, but all read is the html generated. How can I read it?? for (var i = 0; i < oTable.length; i++) { **userModel.Id = oTable[i][0];** regionModel.Users.push(userModel); processModel.Regions.push(regionModel); userModel = { "Id": "", "Name": ""}; regionModel = { "Id": "", "Name": "", "Users": []}; } TABLE <table class="tbl" id="tbl"> <thead> <tr> <th> Region </th> <th> Owner </th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> @if (Model != null) { foreach (var item in Model.Regions) { <tr> <td> @Html.DisplayTextFor(i => item.Name) </td> <td> @Html.DropDownListFor(i => item.Users, new SelectList(item.Users, "Id", "Name")) </td> </tr> } } </tbody> CODE function ProcessSave() { // Step 1: Read View Data and Create JSON Object var userModel = { "User": "", "Name": ""}; var regionModel = {"Region" : "","Name": "", "Users": []}; var processModel = { "User": "", "Description": "", "Code": "", "Regions": []}; processModel.Name = $("#Name").val(); processModel.Code = $("#Code").val(); processModel.Description = $("#Description").val(); var oTable = $('.tbl').dataTable().fnGetData(); for (var i = 0; i < oTable.length; i++) { regionModel.Name = oTable[i][0]; userModel.User = oTable[i][1]; userModel.Name = oTable[i][1]; regionModel.Users.push(userModel); processModel.Regions.push(regionModel); userModel = { "Id": "", "Name": ""}; regionModel = { "Name": "", "Users": []}; } // Step 1: Ends Here // Set 2: Ajax Post // Here i have used ajax post for saving/updating information $.ajax({ url: '/Process/Create', data: JSON.stringify(processModel), type: 'POST', contentType: 'application/json;', dataType: 'json', success: function (result) { if (result.Success == "1") { window.location.href = "/Process/Index"; } else { alert(result.ex); } } }); } MODELS namespace TestingTool.ViewModels { public partial class ProcessModel { public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Code { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<RegionModel> Regions { get; set; } } } namespace TestingTool.ViewModels { public class RegionModel { public int Region { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<UserModel> Users { get; set; } } } namespace TestingTool.ViewModels { public class UserModel { public int User{ get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } }

  • DropDownList not working 100% in ASP.Net MVC

    - by Program.X
    I am quite confused with how to effectively use the Html.DropDownList helper for ASP.NET MVC. Background: I have a 5-page form, which saves data to the form each time "Next" is clicked. Users may navigate back and forth between sections, so previous sections will already be pre-populated with previously-entered data. This works for TextBoxes. But not DropDownLists. I have tried a load of different methods, including: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/867117/how-to-add-static-list-of-items-in-mvc-html-dropdownlist/867218#867218 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2080802/setting-selected-item-to-dropdownlist-in-mvc-application I have a ViewModel such taht I have got my lists and my Model (a LINQ-to-SQL generated class) as properties. eg: public class ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel { public IConsultantRegistration ConsultantRegistration { get; private set; } public SelectList Titles { get; private set; } public SelectList Countries { get; private set; } public SelectList Currencies { get; private set; } public int CurrentSection { get; private set; } private ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel(IConsultantRegistration consultantRegistration) { ConsultantRegistration = consultantRegistration; CurrentSection = 1; Titles = new SelectList(new string[] { "Mr", "Mrs", "Miss", "Ms", "Dr", "Sir" }); Countries = new SelectList(countries.Select(q => q.Name)); Currencies = new SelectList(currencies,"CurrencyCode","FriendlyForm"); } } My Controller's Edit Action on GET looks like: public class ConsultantRegistrationController : Controller { public IConsultantRegistrationRepository ConsultantRegistrationRepository { get; private set; } public ICountryRepository CountryRepository { get; private set; } public IEnumerable<ICountry> Countries { get; private set; } public ConsultantRegistrationController() { ConsultantRegistrationRepository = RepositoryFactory.CreateConsultantRegistrationRepository(); CountryRepository = RepositoryFactory.CreateCountryRepository(); Countries = CountryRepository.GetCountries().ToArray(); } public ActionResult Edit(Guid id, int sectionIndex) { IConsultantRegistration consultantRegistration = ConsultantRegistrationRepository.GetConsultantRegistration(id); SelectList bankBranchCountriesSelectList = new SelectList(Countries, "BankBranchCountry", "CountryName", consultantRegistration.BankBranchCountry); ViewData["bankBranchCountrySelectList"] = bankBranchCountriesSelectList; return View(new ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel(consultantRegistration,sectionIndex, Countries,Currencies)); } } With my View doing: <%: Html.DropDownList("ConsultantRegistration.BankBranchCountry",ViewData["bankBranchCountrySelectList"] as SelectList) %> This gives me the error: DataBinding: 'IWW.ArrowPay.ConsultantRegistration.Data.Country' does not contain a property with the name 'BankBranchCountry'. Which it does, have a look at the schema of this property: public interface IConsultantRegistration { Guid ID { get; set; } [DisplayName("Branch Country")] string BankBranchCountry { get; set; } } (My LINQ-to-SQL type ConsultantRegistration implemented IConsultantRegistration) It seems that it is trying to bind to the wrong type, though? If I use this in my view (and use my Controller's Countries property): <%: Html.DropDownList("ConsultantRegistration.BankBranchCountry ",Model.Countries,"(select a Country)") %> I get the saved value fine, but my model doesn't update on POST. And if I use this in my view: <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model=>model.ConsultantRegistration.BankBranchCountry ",Model.Countries,"(select a Country)") %> I get the list, and it POSTs the selected value back, but does not pre-select the currently selected item in my model on the view. So I have a bit of the solution all over the place, but not all in one place. Hope you can help fill in my ignorance.

  • Model binding nested collections in ASP.NET MVC

    - by MartinHN
    Hi I'm using Steve Sanderson's BeginCollectionItem helper with ASP.NET MVC 2 to model bind a collection if items. That works fine, as long as the Model of the collection items does not contain another collection. I have a model like this: -Product --Variants ---IncludedAttributes Whenever I render and model bind the Variants collection, it works jusst fine. But with the IncludedAttributes collection, I cannot use the BeginCollectionItem helper because the id and names value won't honor the id and names value that was produced for it's parent Variant: <div class="variant"> <input type="hidden" value="bbd4fdd4-fa22-49f9-8a5e-3ff7e2942126" autocomplete="off" name="Variants.index"> <input type="hidden" value="0" name="Variants[bbd4fdd4-fa22-49f9-8a5e-3ff7e2942126].SlotAmount" id="Variants_bbd4fdd4-fa22-49f9-8a5e-3ff7e2942126__SlotAmount"> <table class="included-attributes"> <input type="hidden" value="0" name="Variants.IncludedAttributes[c5989db5-b1e1-485b-b09d-a9e50dd1d2cb].Id" id="Variants_IncludedAttributes_c5989db5-b1e1-485b-b09d-a9e50dd1d2cb__Id" class="attribute-id"> <tr> <td> <input type="hidden" value="0" name="Variants.IncludedAttributes[c5989db5-b1e1-485b-b09d-a9e50dd1d2cb].Id" id="Variants_IncludedAttributes_c5989db5-b1e1-485b-b09d-a9e50dd1d2cb__Id" class="attribute-id"> </td> </tr> </table> </div> If you look at the name of the first hidden field inside the table, it is Variants.IncludedAttributes - where it should have been Variants[bbd4fdd4-fa22-49f9-8a5e-3ff7e2942126].IncludedAttributes[...]... That is because when I call BeginCollectionItem the second time (On the IncludedAttributes collection) there's given no information about the item index value of it's parent Variant. My code for rendering a Variant looks like this: <div class="product-variant round-content-box grid_6" data-id="<%: Model.AttributeType.Id %>"> <h2><%: Model.AttributeType.AttributeTypeName %></h2> <div class="box-content"> <% using (Html.BeginCollectionItem("Variants")) { %> <div class="slot-amount"> <label class="inline" for="slotAmountSelectList"><%: Text.amountOfThisVariant %>:</label> <select id="slotAmountSelectList"><option value="1">1</option><option value="2">2</option></select> </div> <div class="add-values"> <label class="inline" for="txtProductAttributeSearch"><%: Text.addVariantItems %>:</label> <input type="text" id="txtProductAttributeSearch" class="product-attribute-search" /><span><%: Text.or %> <a class="select-from-list-link" href="#select-from-list" data-id="<%: Model.AttributeType.Id %>"><%: Text.selectFromList.ToLowerInvariant() %></a></span> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <%: Html.HiddenFor(m=>m.SlotAmount) %> <div class="included-attributes"> <table> <thead> <tr> <th><%: Text.name %></th> <th style="width: 80px;"><%: Text.price %></th> <th><%: Text.shipping %></th> <th style="width: 90px;"><%: Text.image %></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <% for (int i = 0; i < Model.IncludedAttributes.Count; i++) { %> <tr><%: Html.EditorFor(m => m.IncludedAttributes[i]) %></tr> <% } %> </tbody> </table> </div> <% } %> </div> </div> And the code for rendering an IncludedAttribute: <% using (Html.BeginCollectionItem("Variants.IncludedAttributes")) { %> <td> <%: Model.AttributeName %> <%: Html.HiddenFor(m => m.Id, new { @class = "attribute-id" })%> <%: Html.HiddenFor(m => m.ProductAttributeTypeId) %> </td> <td><%: Model.Price.ToCurrencyString() %></td> <td><%: Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.RequiredShippingTypeId, AppData.GetShippingTypesSelectListItems(Model.RequiredShippingTypeId)) %></td> <td><%: Model.ImageId %></td> <% } %>

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 UpdateModel() is not updating values in memory or database

    - by campbelt
    Hello, I am new to MVC, and so am working through the NerdDinner tutorial, here. In particular, I'm running into problems with the use of the UpdateModel method, which is explained in the part five of that tutorial. The problem is, when I try to edit the value of a dinner object using the UpdateModel method, the values do not get updated, and no exceptions are thrown. Oddly, I am not having any trouble with the Create or Delete features that are illustrated in the tutorial. Only the update feature isn't working. Below, I have included the Controller code that I am using, as well as the view markup, which is contained in both an aspx View file and an ascx Partial View file. Here is the code inside my Controller, called DinnerController.cs: // // GET: /Dinners/Edit/2 [Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner)); } // // POST: /Dinners/Edit/2 [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post), Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection formValues) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); try { UpdateModel(dinner); var x = ViewData.GetModelStateErrors(); // <-- to catch other ModelState errors dinnerRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id = dinner.DinnerID }); } catch { ModelState.AddRuleViolations(dinner.GetRuleViolations()); return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner)); } } The line with the comment "to catch other ModelState errors" was added after reading a possible solution from another StackOverflow thread, here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1461283/asp-net-mvc-updatemodel-not-updating-but-not-throwing-error Unfortunately, that solution didn't help me. Here is the corresponding markup in my Dinners/Edit.aspx View: <asp:Content ID="Main" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Edit Dinner</h2> <% Html.RenderPartial("DinnerForm"); %> </asp:Content> Here is the corresponding markup in my DinnerForm.ascx Partial View. This Partial View file is also used by the Create feature, which is working fine: <%=Html.ValidationSummary("Please correct the errors and try again.") %> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <fieldset> <p> <label for="Title">Dinner Title:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Title)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Title", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="EventDate">EventDate:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.EventDate, new { value = String.Format("{0:g}", Model.Dinner.EventDate) })%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("EventDate", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Description">Description:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Description)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Description", "*")%> </p> <p> <label for="Address">Address:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Address)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Address", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Country">Country:</label> <%=Html.DropDownListFor(model => Model.Dinner.Country, Model.Countries)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Country", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="ContactPhone">ContactPhone #:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.ContactPhone)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("ContactPhone", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Latitude">Latitude:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Latitude)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Latitude", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Longitude">Longitude:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Longitude)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Longitude", "*") %> </p> <p> <input type="submit" value="Save"/> </p> </fieldset> <% } %> In any case, I've been hitting away at this for hours, and I'm out of ideas. So, I'm hoping someone here can help nudge me in the right direction, in order to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
