  • SSRS Tablix Header Row Formatting

    I've got several reports and they have been built with various formatting. Nothing huge just the header row is different between them. I'd like to pick a standard and just update the reports so they all look the same. This can be done on a textbox by textbox basis - setting the font, font color, font size and background color. It seems like I should be able to select more than one textbox and set the formatting on them all at once but the "textbox properties" item is disabled when I've selected more than one. Any thoughts?

    Hello, Is there any SQL editor that supports syntax highlighting, automatic code formatting and code folding? I found this, but it's an Eclipse plugin (I'm a NetBeans user), and cannot automatically format code, which is the most important feature I'm after. Autocompletion is not important, nor is the possibility of running the code (like the SQL editor in NetBeans). Edit: I'm sorry for not specifying, I'm looking for Linux or even web-based software.

    I'm very new to Excel and VBA and was wondering if there is a way I could make conditional formatting based on values in a drop down list. I currently have a warning if the user enters something that is not valid (data validation), but I want to change the cell's background color to red if invalid, or green if valid. Again the options I want to test against are in a Listbox.

    I am trying to format currency that will always contain 2 decimal digits, but if there are extra digits of accuracy to display up to five. As an example: for value = 5.0 display: $5.00 for value = 5.023 display: $5.023 for value = 5.333333333333333 display: $5.33333 I have been playing with the .ToString() formatting, but I can't seem to find the right match of options. Clarification: I want to show from 2-5 decimals, truncating zeros after the second digit. for value = 5.000000000000000 display: $5.00 for value = 5.333333333333333 display: $5.33333

  • ActiveReports Conditional Formatting - Picture Visibility

    In ActiveReports, how can I change formatting based on values in the report data? Specifically, I want to show or hide pictures based on a value in the data. The report gets bound to a list of objects via a set to its DataSource property. These objects have a Condition property with values "Poor", "Normal", etc. I have some pictures in the report that correspond to the different conditions, and I want to hide all the pictures except for the one corresponding to the value. Should I subscribe to the Format event for the detail section? If so, how do I get to the "current record" data?

  • 8 Reasons Why Even Microsoft Agrees the Windows Desktop is a Nightmare

    Let’s be honest: The Windows desktop is a mess. Sure, it’s extremely powerful and has a huge software library, but it’s not a good experience for average people. It’s not even a good experience for geeks, although we tolerate it. Even Microsoft agrees about this. Microsoft’s Surface tablets with Windows RT don’t support any third-party desktop apps. They consider this a feature — users can’t install malware and other desktop junk, so the system will always be speedy and secure. Malware is Still Common Malware may not affect geeks, but it certainly continues to affect average people. Securing Windows, keeping it secure, and avoiding unsafe programs is a complex process. There are over 50 different file extensions that can contain harmful code to keep track of. It’s easy to have theoretical discussions about how malware could infect Mac computers, Android devices, and other systems. But Mac malware is extremely rare, and has  generally been caused by problem with the terrible Java plug-in. Macs are configured to only run executables from identified developers by default, whereas Windows will run everything. Android malware is talked about a lot, but Android malware is rare in the real world and is generally confined to users who disable security protections and install pirated apps. Google has also taken action, rolling out built-in antivirus-like app checking to all Android devices, even old ones running Android 2.3, via Play Services. Whatever the reason, Windows malware is still common while malware for other systems isn’t. We all know it — anyone who does tech support for average users has dealt with infected Windows computers. Even users who can avoid malware are stuck dealing with complex and nagging antivirus programs, especially since it’s now so difficult to trust Microsoft’s antivirus products. Manufacturer-Installed Bloatware is Terrible Sit down with a new Mac, Chromebook, iPad, Android tablet, Linux laptop, or even a Surface running Windows RT and you can enjoy using your new device. The system is a clean slate for you to start exploring and installing your new software. Sit down with a new Windows PC and the system is a mess. Rather than be delighted, you’re stuck reinstalling Windows and then installing the necessary drivers or you’re forced to start uninstalling useless bloatware programs one-by-one, trying to figure out which ones are actually useful. After uninstalling the useless programs, you may end up with a system tray full of icons for ten different hardware utilities anyway. The first experience of using a new Windows PC is frustration, not delight. Yes, bloatware is still a problem on Windows 8 PCs. Manufacturers can customize the Refresh image, preventing bloatware rom easily being removed. Finding a Desktop Program is Dangerous Want to install a Windows desktop program? Well, you’ll have to head to your web browser and start searching. It’s up to you, the user, to know which programs are safe and which are dangerous. Even if you find a website for a reputable program, the advertisements on that page will often try to trick you into downloading fake installers full of adware. While it’s great to have the ability to leave the app store and get software that the platform’s owner hasn’t approved — as on Android — this is no excuse for not providing a good, secure software installation experience for typical users installing typical programs. Even Reputable Desktop Programs Try to Install Junk Even if you do find an entirely reputable program, you’ll have to keep your eyes open while installing it. It will likely try to install adware, add browse toolbars, change your default search engine, or change your web browser’s home page. Even Microsoft’s own programs do this — when you install Skype for Windows desktop, it will attempt to modify your browser settings t ouse Bing, even if you’re specially chosen another search engine and home page. With Microsoft setting such an example, it’s no surprise so many other software developers have followed suit. Geeks know how to avoid this stuff, but there’s a reason program installers continue to do this. It works and tricks many users, who end up with junk installed and settings changed. The Update Process is Confusing On iOS, Android, and Windows RT, software updates come from a single place — the app store. On Linux, software updates come from the package manager. On Mac OS X, typical users’ software updates likely come from the Mac App Store. On the Windows desktop, software updates come from… well, every program has to create its own update mechanism. Users have to keep track of all these updaters and make sure their software is up-to-date. Most programs now have their act together and automatically update by default, but users who have old versions of Flash and Adobe Reader installed are vulnerable until they realize their software isn’t automatically updating. Even if every program updates properly, the sheer mess of updaters is clunky, slow, and confusing in comparison to a centralized update process. Browser Plugins Open Security Holes It’s no surprise that other modern platforms like iOS, Android, Chrome OS, Windows RT, and Windows Phone don’t allow traditional browser plugins, or only allow Flash and build it into the system. Browser plugins provide a wealth of different ways for malicious web pages to exploit the browser and open the system to attack. Browser plugins are one of the most popular attack vectors because of how many users have out-of-date plugins and how many plugins, especially Java, seem to be designed without taking security seriously. Oracle’s Java plugin even tries to install the terrible Ask toolbar when installing security updates. That’s right — the security update process is also used to cram additional adware into users’ machines so unscrupulous companies like Oracle can make a quick buck. It’s no wonder that most Windows PCs have an out-of-date, vulnerable version of Java installed. Battery Life is Terrible Windows PCs have bad battery life compared to Macs, IOS devices, and Android tablets, all of which Windows now competes with. Even Microsoft’s own Surface Pro 2 has bad battery life. Apple’s 11-inch MacBook Air, which has very similar hardware to the Surface Pro 2, offers double its battery life when web browsing. Microsoft has been fond of blaming third-party hardware manufacturers for their poorly optimized drivers in the past, but there’s no longer any room to hide. The problem is clearly Windows. Why is this? No one really knows for sure. Perhaps Microsoft has kept on piling Windows component on top of Windows component and many older Windows components were never properly optimized. Windows Users Become Stuck on Old Windows Versions Apple’s new OS X 10.9 Mavericks upgrade is completely free to all Mac users and supports Macs going back to 2007. Apple has also announced their intention that all new releases of Mac OS X will be free. In 2007, Microsoft had just shipped Windows Vista. Macs from the Windows Vista era are being upgraded to the latest version of the Mac operating system for free, while Windows PCs from the same era are probably still using Windows Vista. There’s no easy upgrade path for these people. They’re stuck using Windows Vista and maybe even the outdated Internet Explorer 9 if they haven’t installed a third-party web browser. Microsoft’s upgrade path is for these people to pay $120 for a full copy of Windows 8.1 and go through a complicated process that’s actaully a clean install. Even users of Windows 8 devices will probably have to pay money to upgrade to Windows 9, while updates for other operating systems are completely free. If you’re a PC geek, a PC gamer, or someone who just requires specialized software that only runs on Windows, you probably use the Windows desktop and don’t want to switch. That’s fine, but it doesn’t mean the Windows desktop is actually a good experience. Much of the burden falls on average users, who have to struggle with malware, bloatware, adware bundled in installers, complex software installation processes, and out-of-date software. In return, all they get is the ability to use a web browser and some basic Office apps that they could use on almost any other platform without all the hassle. Microsoft would agree with this, touting Windows RT and their new “Windows 8-style” app platform as the solution. Why else would Microsoft, a “devices and services” company, position the Surface — a device without traditional Windows desktop programs — as their mass-market device recommended for average people? This isn’t necessarily an endorsement of Windows RT. If you’re tech support for your family members and it comes time for them to upgrade, you may want to get them off the Windows desktop and tell them to get a Mac or something else that’s simple. Better yet, if they get a Mac, you can tell them to visit the Apple Store for help instead of calling you. That’s another thing Windows PCs don’t offer — good manufacturer support.   • Installing/configuring mysql server nightmare

    I've never had problems installing and configuring mysql server in kubuntu but now it's just being stubborn, here's my issue: I installed the packages mysql-server, mysql-client (both 5.1), the server package asked me to put a root password, which I did, it then started saying "access denied", on anything Later on, I decided to purge the packages and re-install and gave a tweak to the my.cnf and not it says ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Please, is there a way to do a fresh start on this and do it right this time? I don't know if I'm missing something but the /var/lib/mysql is not empty but there is no .pid, now the mysql service won't start, there is no mysql.sock either Any help appreciated

    Hi folks, I seem to have a date formatting problem every day! I am querying a table and am getting a date back in the format dd/mm/yyyy (as a string btw). Brilliant! thats what I want. But, now I want to convert that string to a date so i can do dim dayNumber as integer = day.DayOfWeek But when I convert it to a date it changes it to #m/dd/yyyy#. AHHHH! how can I change this?   • The Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot NIghtmare

    I have done some research as to how to go about this dual-boot, and I am close, but I need some guidance with booting into Windows 8 (Ubuntu is installed). I have a Lenovo Ideapad y510p. I will go over what I have done to dual-boot this laptop, with windows 8 pre-installed, with Ubuntu 12.04: I followed every instruction to the letter for the 97-vote response here, and everything worked fine up until after the repair boot section: Installing on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 System (UEFI Supported) I ran into the following error upon restarting after the repair boot section: error: invalid arch independent elf magic. This error (a grub issue) disabled me from booting into Ubuntu :( After a little googling, I followed the instructions in the reactivating grub 2 section to resolve the error: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1686 I found a possible solution to fixing the Windows 8 boot issue, and tried it: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:i9JMyXzzRpYJ:askubuntu.com/questions/279275/dual-boot-problem-windows-8-ubuntu-12-04+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=ubuntu I thought the above solution worked, but when I attempt to boot into Windows 8, I get the following missing file error: File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc000000e Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors. Here is some other information that may be useful: I have 3 partitions devoted to Ubuntu. The first, sda8, has a flag bios_grub (1049 kb). The second, sda9, is where everything else is (96.6 GB). The last, sda10, is for swap (8299 MB). My question is: How do I fix the boot configuration for Windows 8? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Update 1: When I attempt to boot into UEFI mode, I get the following error: invalid arch independent elf magic (the same error I saw in step 2). Update 2: A useful link here I found: Dual booting Ubuntu 12.04: UEFI and Legacy So, this is my 4th time installing Ubuntu on the laptop, and it looks like I need to install it in UEFI mode. Should I scrap it all again, and reinstall? Or is there ANY way of salvaging my installation? At this point, I can't even boot into Windows (although I have an installation cd to fix the windows boot issue, that would ultimately screw over ubuntu). Update 3: After doing a little more browsing around, I found a cool way around this messy grub stuff, using rEFInd. Rod Smith's post here saved me! Installing ubuntu 12.04.02 in uefi mode Now, I am able to dual-boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu and boot into both operating systems :) I have another issue (relating to the boot configuration in the bios) that I will post as a separate question :)

  • Magento Bulk Product Import + Modules Nightmare

    Have 5,000 products in CSV file File has been re-saved as UT8 file in google documents and exported to CSV from excel File loads perfectly with all fields in demo of magento store manager (except we dont want to buy it:) When trying to upload in regular Magento..keep getting error messages on column duplicates....yes we have hundreds of duplicates as the titles of products in fields correspond with different sizes, etc...no way around it Any solutions around this or any open source software similar to store manager that can do the trick. Ready to give up and go to paid solution such as Big Commerce Also, Uploaded a bunch of free modules/keys...of open source bulk import products from magentocommerce but I cant find them anywhere in the main admin panel to use...there is no menu item for them anywhere??

    Hi, I'm dynamically creating textfields in as3, and formatting them with the TextFormat class. I'm having some issues though with selecting the exact "style" of font to apply to the textfields. My code so far looks like: formatT = new TextFormat( ); formatT.bold = false; formatT.color = 0x000000; formatT.font = "TradeGothic"; formatT.size = 16; var textItem = new TextField(); textItem.text = "foobar"; textItem.setTextFormat(formatT); addChild(textItem); This works ("Trade Gothic" is applied to the enclosed text), however I can't figure out how to apply a specific style of "Trade Gothic", for instance "Light Oblique". Is there some way that I can specify this using the TextFormat class? Thanks.

    My blog is hosted on Blogger and I frequently post code snippets in C / C# / Java / XML etc. but I find the snippet gets "mangled". Are there any web sites that I could use to parse the snippet beforehand and sort out the formatting, convert XML "<" to "<" etc. There are a numbers of questions around this area on SO but I couldn't find any that address this question directly. Edit: For @Rich answer, site states "To display the formatted code on your site, you need to get this CSS stylesheet, and add a reference to it in the section of your page". That's the problem - you can't do this on Blogger AFAIK.

    I own a Dell optiplex gx260 pc and I got bios revision a03 and want to go higher like a09 I tried the Dell support page using the Wine program down loader after a little configuring and set up on Install Shield Wizard I get the message "unable to obtain required information about your system..setup cannot complete" the pc doesn't have a floppy diskette drive any more and the other option using download manager is only executable via Windows Internet explorer I don't blame wine or anybody else but this is frustrating.

    I need to change the color of a cell in ReportViewer based on its value. 1) I got the first part down - I'm comparing the difference between two numbers like so: =IIf(Fields!variance.Value > 0) 2) Now how do I actually change the visual formatting of the cell? A web standards way would be to add a class - since then you can format the class to whatever you like, e.g. changing borders, typography, bacgkround color etc. Since ReportViewer sucks and doesn't have that functionality what should I use instead? Any hacks I could use?

  • Samsung 7 Graphics Nightmare

    I just bought a Samsung 7 laptop with the Amd Radeon hd 6490m an I installed the driver. Everything was working smooth and it was rendering nice until I rebooted it. I noticed that it wouldn't boot my favorite game because of a GLSBadRenderRequest. So I went over to the AMD Catalyst program, and it wouldn't fire up because it couldn't find the graphics card!! What do you think is going on? Oh, and that was the latest driver straight from AMD. Im running 12.04lts.

  • Extended display - nightmare

    I have been struggling for quite a while, and I hope one of you can shed some lights on my issue. I am using Xubuntu 13.10 (Ubuntu 12.04LTS behaves the same way, higher version wouldn't install, LinuxMint didn't install, Fedora didn't install). I am trying to set extend display for two dell monitors 1900x1200. It works great when in mirror mode, but I just cannot extend the display. Either one monitor goes to sleep and the other is unresponsive, or both work but are unusable. This is a link to the picture of my monitors in mirror mode This is link showing what happens after I try to extend the desktop I get the same results if I use aRandr or the built in configuration utility. I have an ATI Radeon X300 card. I cannot use proprietary Catalyst drivers (I would have to use the legacy ones, which would force me into using much older version of the OS). Extension is possible with Windows. I am hoping someone can come up with tweaks that would allow me to run an extended desktop. I truly love Xubuntu (and Ubuntu, unfortunately, Unity is a bit too heavy for my old PC, and I have to run in 2D mode, so 12.04 is as high as I can go). I have tried everything I could find online, but nothing worked thus far. I believe some configuration or something I am missing might work. Please, if you have any idea, do not hesitate.     Im setting up a web form, and I'm trying to have it where visitors can paste their resumes into a text area. Then I want to email the info using php mail(). But the resume info is just stored in the variable as one long string with no formatting. Is there a way I can send the pasted resume text to the client in the resume format? Maintaining all the line breaks and stuff? He wants to avoid having people upload resumes.
