• How do I change which audio jacks are used for input and output?

  I'm using a Realtek HD audio card built-in my motherboard. The Windows driver comes with a control panel that allows me to select which back panel jacks are used for what. So for example I can make both the blue jack and green jack for output and only the red one for mic-in. (Whereas by default, the blue jack is for line in, which I never need.) How can I do the same under Linux? If possible, please don't suggest something that involves PulseAudio or JACK; I'd like to do it the plain way, e.g. by editing ALSA configuration files, if possible. The way I understand it, my problem should have nothing to do with software servers redirecting streams, just instructing the driver to treat this jack as so and so because it's hardware supported.   I get a black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft. I presume there are other applications that cause this too - but I have not tried to open them. The window initially stops responding for a few seconds, before I get a black screen and my Skype call ends abruptly. I have tried waiting for a few minutes but nothing happens. I have to power down my computer and then boot it up again. This is becoming an annoyance, and I don't know what's causing it. Here are my specs, if it helps: My graphics card is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 1100. If you need any more info or if I've missed anything please ask. Thanks :-)

  I have just installed Windows 7 on a desktop machine and for the first time ever have had a really tough time doing so, its normally a nice smooth install. This time I found that the monitor would simply go black after completing the installation. I tried reinstalling about 3 times and this did not help. After much searching I discovered that it was the nvidia drivers that were playing up with win 7, so i booted into safe mode, disabled the device, then rebooted to complete the installation. Windows 7 now works fine as long as the nvidia 9600 gt video card is disabled. The moment I enable it, the system requires a reboot and the screen will go black before even getting to the log in screen. I have tried downloading the latest driver and installing it manually, I have also tried uninstalling the device and allowing windows 7 to install it itself. Nothing seems to work. any clues?

• Ardour won't rewind when jack time master

  Using Ubuntu Studio 12.04, ardour will not rewind when it is set to the jack time master. I've read that this could be due to a jack/ardour version conflict, but I am not sure what the correct combo should be. The same thing happens with "ardour 2.8.14 (built from revision 13065)" and "ardour 2.8.12 (built from revision 10144)". The latter is the default installation with ubuntu studio 12.04 LTS. • Can it be harmful to grant jackd realtime priority?

  I am apt-get installing Ardour, a sound mixing program, just to try it out. Installing Ardour also installs JACK, a dependency. As part of the JACK installation script, I get the following dialog: If you want to run jackd with realtime priorities, the user starting jackd needs realtime permissions. Accept this option to create the file /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf, granting realtime priority and memlock privileges to the audio group. Running jackd with realtime priority minimizes latency, but may lead to complete system lock-ups by requesting all the available physical system memory, which is unacceptable in multi-user environments. Enable realtime process priority? I'm installing on my laptop, which never has multiple simultaneous users. I still have concerns: is JACK something that'll be used by the system itself to play any sound (i.e. will it replace ALSA)? If so, does that mean that if I enable realtime priority for JACK, I'll run a slight risk of freezing the machine whenever any sound is played? Or is JACK only going to be used by Ardour for now (until I install some other JACK-dependent program)? Thanks, -- Matt

• Black screen with thinkpad edge e525, AMD radeon HD before and after installation, plymouth?

  I have a new thinkpad edge e525 (which should work) and wanted to try ubuntu (first linux experience). With the ubuntu desktop-cd I had a blackscreen before installation, I could fix that with nomodeset. After the installation, when rebooting I got the black screen again. First I see some ubuntu colour with a green busted stripe. I have the same problem with the live boot, also tried mint live, the stripe gets pink. I installed xubuntu 64bit from an alternate cd and I didnt have problems until de reboot after the installation. Same problem, just a black screen with the green stripe than blackscreen. I tried several things: adding nomodeset to the bootmenu, but than I get: No connection to plymouth and it is stuck at checking the battery status. I tried to replace quiet splash with text. Didnt work either. actually one time I saw a blue booting image before that. I managed to get a root command though via the recovery boot. I didnt dare to just remove the plymouth package. Can I just delete plymouth or do I have to deinstall it as described in several ways. (Problem is, right now the notebook doesnt have a internet connection. And I dont know how to manage it with a usb stick?) Or do I have to install the AMD catalyst driver manually? (Again, how can I do that with an usb stick) I also tried this: Ubuntu hits a black screen after boot. Is there any solution without internet? And if I need internet which is the right one? Please explain step by step what I have to write and so on! Thank you! also tried: set gfxpayload=text and: just remove splash and adding vesafb.nonsense=1 to the grub editor, because I couldnt find it anywhere

• Windows 7 Black Screen On Boot, Seperate Bootable VHD Works Fine

  I have a Window 7 x64 install with a bootable VHD (also Windows 7 x64). I was having problems getting my homeserver to do backups (VSS erred) so I ran check disk and used a tool from MS (cleanc2r.exe) to remove an empty Q drive from the VHD that I believe was a result of installing Office 2010 Beta. (All of this was done on the bootable VHD, not the main install.) Now I can't boot into the main install. It gets past the Starting Windows screen and then goes black. I can still boot into the bootable VHD and everything works fine from there. I have tried to boot the main install in Safe Mode/Safe Mode with Networking/and Safe Mode command prompt and it has the same issue. I ran chkdsk /r on the main install and after doing all the work there was a message about correcting some free space that was marked as allocated and also that it was unable to make an entry into the event log. I tried the startup repair utility and it found no problems. I don't see the setting for restore to last know good configuration so I couldn't do that. I don't recall installing anything new to the main install nor having hooked up any new hardware recently.

  I just newly install Ubuntu 12.04, and im running an HDMI cable from my computer to my ASUS monitor. Now in Windows 7, i did not have these black bar issues running at 1080p. But now in Ubuntu, i have these black bars. I installed the ATI Catalyst Control Center, and I went to go in to fix the scaling but it is grayed out. As you can see, even with the override box checked i still can not set the scaling. The monitor was set to a lower resolution to hopefully fix it but that did not work either. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

• Windows 7, Black screen with cursor, impossible to logon

  First - I have gone through as many possible solutions I've found here and elsewhere. [Edit - to describe the issue in more detail, the PC appears to boot correctly, but instead of the logon screen, I have been getting a black screen WITH the pointer cursor, and it responds correctly to the mouse. Pressing CTL-ALT-DEL brings up the logon screen's background, but with no logon area nor any other content. This screen was at the full resolution before I uninstalled the graphics driver in safe-mode.] I also just ran a full up-to-date AVG scan from boot media. [Edit - the AVG scan, which was updated to today's virus signatures, found no issues at all.] So - steps I've tried: Safe Boot, Restore from before the issue - done, no help. Uninstall the graphics driver - done, now i have a 1024x768 fallback screen, still no way in. sfc /scannow - only doable from Safe boot obviously, but no change. [Edit - booting from restore media, performing a startup repair and...]Restore further back - restored to 2 days ago, and I'd had many reboots since then with no problem. Enable autologin to try to get beyond the login screen - done, doesn't work. It seems the best advice is complete reinstall, but I really don't want to do that because it'll take 3-4 days to add all the apps I use. Some key points to note - in both states - before and after removing the video driver, I always had a mouse cursor on the screen. CTL-ALT-DEL flashes up the login background, but no login info. I can (and often do) reinstall from scratch, but was at a fairly stable state before this, and would prefer not to. -Paul

• Step-by-step to run a midi keyboard input device? 12.04

  I have a Korg Nanokey, and I'd like to make it produce sound in ubuntu. I've read that means I should be using Rosegarden, and that Rosegarden uses JACK, but does not install it. (Although checking out Ubuntu Software Center, apparently some components of JACK are installed by default?) I understand there can be a lot of work setting up JACK without it fighting the default sound server. Can someone give me a step-by-step method for what I need to do to plug in my midi machine and hear music when I press keys as simply as possible (without messing up pulseaudio, ie, so I can still access Skype and ordinary desktop stuff)? I'm fine installing JACK, but I'd like to sandbox it a little if it has the chance of messing up regular desktop. • No sound output from headphone jack Ubuntu12.04

  I have just bought a new ASUS u47vc computer. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on it alongside windows 7 with no problems what so ever. Howevr, there is one issue that must be resolved. I can not get sound to come from the audio jack. The laptop's speakers work fine. It plays music and sound files fine with the internal speaks. However, when I plug in my headphones (or external speakers) the internal speakers mute (as they should) and nothing comes out of the headphones. • No rear audio when front jack is connected

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual booted. When I connect something on front audio jack then rear audio is not working. I have tried changing analolog-output-headphones.conf file. After changing that alsamixer showing that both centre and surround not muted with full volum. • Front audio jack not working or missconfigured?

  I have win xp and asus p5ql-e motherboard. The problem is that when i plug in my headphones on the front audio jack, the computer doesn't recognizes it. They work on the back audio jack but not on the front - how can i be sure that it;s not a software problem (something miss configured or not configured at all), before i conclude that it's a hardware problem (broken front audio jack or miss connected to the motherboard)?

  I'm having a serious problem with my computer; I think I've narrowed it down to the motherboard, but I'd like a second opinion before I spend the money. Before I moved into my new apartment, my desktop was working fine; now, it just won't work. It will turn on, the fans will spin up, lights come on... but nothing appears on the screen. No POST, nothing. I've tried: A different monitor (both are VGA) A different video-card (both are DVI, PCIe) Three different, known-good VGA-DVI adapters The onboard video port (VGA) Reseating the memory, and trying only one stick Different, known-good wall-outlets Unplugging the HDD and CD-drive from both the motherboard and PSU Replacing the PSU Has anyone had this happen before? • Jack of all trades, master of none [closed]

  I've got a question similar to this one: Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer? though not entirely. I got off college 2 years ago and I'm currently struggling with a University study. Most likely I'll have to drop out and start working within the next couple of months. Now here's the pickle. I have no speciality what so ever. When I got out of college I had worked with C, C++ and Java. I had had an internship at NEC-Philips and got familiar with C# (.NET) and I taught myself how it worked. After college I started working with PHP, HTML,SQL, MySQL Javascript and Jquery. I'm currently teaching myself Ruby on Rails and thus Ruby. At my university I also got familiar with MATLAB. As you can see I've got a broad scope of languages and frameworks I'm familiar with, but none I know inside-out. So I guess this kinda applies to me: "Jack of all trades, master of none.". I've been looking for jobs and I've noticed that most of them require some years of experience with a certain language and some specifications that apply to that language. My question is: How do I pick a speciality? And how do I know if I'll actually enjoy it? As I've worked with loads of languages how would I be able to tell this is right for me? I don't like being tied down to a specific role and I quite like being a generalist. But in order to make more money I would need a specialisation. • Black screen white cursor and can't boot from live disc that I installed from just yesterday (Ubuntu 12.04)

  So, I've decided to change to Ubuntu from Windows 7 after reformatting. Install goes smoothly, I've set everything up, and it works for a day. It crashed when I had a full screen video, froze, so I rebooted, and now I can't get past the black screen with flashing white underscore cursor. If I wait a while, I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key" I've tried that, removed any boot options but the DVD drive, even tried my Windows 7 boot CD as well. Nothing boots, so I can't do anything. This is on an Asus A52N laptop, and all I can access now is the BIOS (version K52N 217), as far as I can tell.

• Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?
