  • Which tips helped you learn touch-typing? [closed]

    - by julien
I've been learning touch-typing for about two weeks now, and I'm really commited to mastering this skill. Eventhough I'm doing ok with prose already, I'm struggling with programming syntax and even more with keybindings. Those stray you away from the home row more than regular words, and aren't as easy to practice. So I often hunt and peck in order to just get it out, but when reverting to old habits like this, I find it hard to get back into the touch-typing mindframe quickly. One little trick that has helped me so far when getting lost is to reposition every finger on its home row key, and mentally visualize the layout bias of the keyboard, ie the backslash kind of alignment of key columns. It's hard to describe though and probably a bit weird... Hope you guys have better tips !

  • Are there non-programming related activities akin to solving programming problems ?

    - by julien
I'm talking about particular activities, for which you can draw parallels with the specific kind of reasonning needed when solving programming problems. Counter examples are activities that would help in almost any situation, like : take a shower or any other, somewhat passive activities, which are only helpful in triggering this sort of asynchronous problem solving our brain does exercise, because you brain simply works better when you're fit EDIT : It seems this question was quite misunderstood. I wasn't asking about what you can do when stuck on a problem but rather, what kind of activities you have in you spare time that you think help you, more or less directly, solving programing problems.

  • Printer "ripping" forever (network printer)

    - by Julien Gorenflot
Since I installed Ubuntu 11.10, printing is a disaster. I did not have the problem with Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04), but maybe it just comes from the fact that someone else had installed it for me, and possibly it configured better. When I print a pdf, even 2 pages, my printer (SHARP MX 2300N) stays in rippen for hours. "Rippen" is a German word, not really sure how to translate. Google translate says, The English equivalent is "Rib". And eventually, sometimes, the pages finally get printed. But in between my whole floor is very angry because they also need the printer. Additionally, I don't always have the whole day for waiting for my pages. I remember that when printing I used to be asked if I wanted to reduce transparency effects, which does not seem to happen anymore after I installed Ubuntu 11.10. Is there any connection? Not sure, because I don't think it was for pdf files.

  • How to install the translations for trac

    - by julien
I have installed trac on my server running Ubuntu 12.04. The problem is that the users cannot change the language in their preferences. Instead, the following message is displayed: Translations are currently unavailable. Trac has been localized to more than a dozen of languages but in order to be able to use them, the Babel package needs to be present when installing Trac. See TracInstall for details. The installation has been done using the repositories of Ubuntu, but I could not find any package related to trac and babel, nor trac and anything related to internationalization. How can I install the translations for trac?

  • Are there any arguments that can make a contractor reconsider working on fixed price ?

    - by julien
I've been working for a contractor who brings in some good projects, but they are all fixed-price and often fixed-time. As a result he always has me making a quote over loose requirements, which never fails to bring a lot of tension due to feature creep. He claims he'd never get a contract if he couldn't agree on a price with his clients first, but as far as I'm concerned I don't wanna go through another project under these terms. Is there any argument I could make to have him pay me by the hour, or should I just suck less at estimating ?

  • How to make Google recognize language for a multilingual website?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
Few weeks ago, I implemented translation functionality for the website of my company. The website is now available in french and english and I did look on the internet the best way to do if we want to do not lose any ranking and to have our pages on Google. Here is what I did: I did set a response header: Content-Language:en and Content-Language:fr My URLs are formatted as: http://www.website.com/en/... and http://www.website.com/fr/... My html tag is set with a lang attribute: <html lang="en"> and <html lang="fr"> There is a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="EnglishPageUrl"> on french pages and a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="frenchPageUrl"> on english pages. But Google keeps referring to some english pages when I'm doing a search on french engine, knowing that the website was first only available in english. Is that normal? Do I have to wait still, it has been now almost one month, I thought it would be okay...? Thank you.

  • How to specify importance of html elements?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
Is it possible to specify what elements of the page are important, or, more specifically, what elements of the page are not important? I'm using HTML5 new elements (nav, header, footer, section, article, aside...), but in the description of the website, there's sometimes my login form (in the header of my page though) in the Google description of my website pages... Is there a solution to resolve this problem? Thank you.

  • JavaScript: scroll position (Webkit engine) [migrated]

    - by Julien
I'm currently trying to use JavaScript to find out how far down the page the user has scrolled; for Firefox 8.0, the keyword is pageYOffset. To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position? Thank you.

  • How to get the cursor position in bash ?

    - by Julien Nicoulaud
In a bash script, I want to get the cursor column in a variable. It looks like using the ANSI escape code {ESC}[6n is the only way to get it, for example the following way: # Query the cursor position echo -en '\033[6n' # Read it to a variable read -d R CURCOL # Extract the column from the variable CURCOL="${CURCOL##*;}" # We have the column in the variable echo $CURCOL Unfortunately, this prints characters to the standard output and I want to do it silently. Besides, this is not very portable... Is there a pure-bash way to achieve this ?

  • Wrong CSS mime type with Roundcube 0.5 beta and nginx

    - by Julien Vehent
    I'm running into a CSS problem. This is a setup based on Debian Squeeze (nginx/0.7.67, php5/cgi) on which I installed the latest Roundcube 0.5 beta. PHP is properly processed, login works fine but the CSS files are not loaded and Firefox is throwing the following errors: Error: The stylesheet https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/skins/default/common.css?s=1290600165 was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css". Source File: https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/?_task=login Line: 0 Error: The stylesheet https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/skins/default/mail.css?s=1290156319 was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css". Source File: https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/?_task=login Line: 0 As far as I understand, nginx doesn't see the .css extension (because ofthe ?s= argument) and thus set the mime type with the default value, being text/html. Should I fix this in nginx (and how ?) or is it roundcube's related ? Edit: It seems that it's nginx related. The content-type isn't set for any other type than text/html. I had to include manually the following declarations to force CSS and JS content-types. That's ugly, and I never had the problem before... any idea ? location ~ \.css { add_header Content-Type text/css; } location ~ \.js { add_header Content-Type application/x-javascript; }

  • How can MySQL be in GDAL's dependencies when it's already installed?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
I'm trying to install GDAL on my CentOS 64 bits server to be able to make some GIS operations. I tried a simple: # yum install gdal First, the GDAL version is 1.4 (the last released one is 1.9) Then, I see in the dependencies list mysql. But I have mysql already installed, from another repository (remi), with a newer version than the one suggested by yum... Is it a problem of architecture (yum suggests i386)? I risked a yes, but still impossible to install it! Here's the error I have. Transaction Check Error: package mysql-5.5.28-1.el5.remi.x86_64 (which is newer than mysql-5.0.95-1.el5_7.1.i386) is already installed Then, I tried to install it from sources with last version available (1.9.2). I downloaded the GDAL tar.gz, extracted the files and installed it like following: # tar -xzf gdal-1.9.2.tar.gz # ./configure --with-static-proj4=/usr/local/lib --with-threads --with-libtiff=internal --with-geotiff=internal --with-jpeg=internal --with-gif=internal --with-png=internal --with-libz=internal # make # make install But during the make, I have some strange errors displaying, about RegisterOGRMySQL, that I can't understand: chmod a+x gdal-config /bin/sh /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/libtool --mode=link g++ gdalinfo.lo /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/libgdal.la -o gdalinfo libtool: link: g++ .libs/gdalinfo.o -o .libs/gdalinfo /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/.libs/libgdal.so -L/usr/local/lib/lib -L/usr/kerberos/lib64 -lproj -lsqlite3 /usr/lib64/libexpat.so -lpthread -lrt -lcurl -ldl -lgssapi_krb5 -lkrb5 -lk5crypto -lcom_err -lidn -lssl -lcrypto -lz -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/usr/local/lib -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/usr/lib64 /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/.libs/libgdal.so: undefined reference to `RegisterOGRMySQL' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [gdalinfo] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/apps' make: *** [apps-target] Error 2 Has anyone a solution? • BGP path prepended route not listed anywhere

    - by Julien Vehent
We have a simple multi-homed setup with two routers that advertise our AS to two ISP. The second ISP (ISP B) is only used for backup when ISP A goes down, so we prepended our AS 3 times on this route. I spend a couple of hours this morning poking at looking glass routers all over the internet, and none of them list our backup route with the prepended path. I checked the south african internet exchange, the london internet exchange, oregon internet exchange and a couple dozen ISPs. All of them have multiples routes through ISP A, often with 3 or 4 hops. The route through ISP B should, at least, appear somewhere and have 5 or 6 hops. But I couldn't find it anywhere. (I checked the full bgp tables on the looking glass routers, using show ip bgp 65000) My questions are: Is there a limit to the size of a route after which most routers will simply discard the route ? Is our backup route even going to work when ISP A goes down, if no router knows about it ? Our two routers are connected on iBGP. Would it be possible that the route through ISPB is not announced because the iBGP session prefers the route through ISPA ? This is what non-exist-map and advertise-map are supposed to do, but none of those are used in either routers.

If I sum up the RSS line on all this, I get the following : # ps -aeo rss | awk '{sum+=$1} END {print sum}' 30096 Which makes sense. However, I have a pretty big surprise when I do a free: # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 591180 343684 247496 0 25432 161256 -/+ buffers/cache: 156996 434184 Swap: 1048568 0 1048568 As you can see 60% of the available memory is already consumed... which leaves me with only 40% to run my own applications if I want to avoid swapping. Quite disapointing! 2 questions arise : Where is all this memory? How to take some of it back for my own apps?
