  • Printer "ripping" forever (network printer)

    - by Julien Gorenflot
Since I installed Ubuntu 11.10, printing is a disaster. I did not have the problem with Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04), but maybe it just comes from the fact that someone else had installed it for me, and possibly it configured better. When I print a pdf, even 2 pages, my printer (SHARP MX 2300N) stays in rippen for hours. "Rippen" is a German word, not really sure how to translate. Google translate says, The English equivalent is "Rib". And eventually, sometimes, the pages finally get printed. But in between my whole floor is very angry because they also need the printer. Additionally, I don't always have the whole day for waiting for my pages. I remember that when printing I used to be asked if I wanted to reduce transparency effects, which does not seem to happen anymore after I installed Ubuntu 11.10. Is there any connection? Not sure, because I don't think it was for pdf files.

  • How to install the translations for trac

    - by julien
I have installed trac on my server running Ubuntu 12.04. The problem is that the users cannot change the language in their preferences. Instead, the following message is displayed: Translations are currently unavailable. Trac has been localized to more than a dozen of languages but in order to be able to use them, the Babel package needs to be present when installing Trac. See TracInstall for details. The installation has been done using the repositories of Ubuntu, but I could not find any package related to trac and babel, nor trac and anything related to internationalization. How can I install the translations for trac?

  • Are there any arguments that can make a contractor reconsider working on fixed price ?

    - by julien
I've been working for a contractor who brings in some good projects, but they are all fixed-price and often fixed-time. As a result he always has me making a quote over loose requirements, which never fails to bring a lot of tension due to feature creep. He claims he'd never get a contract if he couldn't agree on a price with his clients first, but as far as I'm concerned I don't wanna go through another project under these terms. Is there any argument I could make to have him pay me by the hour, or should I just suck less at estimating ?

  • How to make Google recognize language for a multilingual website?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
Few weeks ago, I implemented translation functionality for the website of my company. The website is now available in french and english and I did look on the internet the best way to do if we want to do not lose any ranking and to have our pages on Google. Here is what I did: I did set a response header: Content-Language:en and Content-Language:fr My URLs are formatted as: http://www.website.com/en/... and http://www.website.com/fr/... My html tag is set with a lang attribute: <html lang="en"> and <html lang="fr"> There is a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="EnglishPageUrl"> on french pages and a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="frenchPageUrl"> on english pages. But Google keeps referring to some english pages when I'm doing a search on french engine, knowing that the website was first only available in english. Is that normal? Do I have to wait still, it has been now almost one month, I thought it would be okay...? Thank you.

  • How to specify importance of html elements?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
Is it possible to specify what elements of the page are important, or, more specifically, what elements of the page are not important? I'm using HTML5 new elements (nav, header, footer, section, article, aside...), but in the description of the website, there's sometimes my login form (in the header of my page though) in the Google description of my website pages... Is there a solution to resolve this problem? Thank you.

  • JavaScript: scroll position (Webkit engine) [migrated]

    - by Julien
I'm currently trying to use JavaScript to find out how far down the page the user has scrolled; for Firefox 8.0, the keyword is pageYOffset. To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position? Thank you.

  • Is fish or zsh better for shell programming?

    - by Julien Nicoulaud
I'm a bash user willing to switch to a more friendly and advanced shell. I read a lot of good things about zsh, but I gave a quick test at fish and it seems great too. Both seem very close in term of features, what is your opinion about those two shells especially as regards shell programming?

  • How can MySQL be in GDAL's dependencies when it's already installed?

    - by Julien Fouilhé
I'm trying to install GDAL on my CentOS 64 bits server to be able to make some GIS operations. I tried a simple: # yum install gdal First, the GDAL version is 1.4 (the last released one is 1.9) Then, I see in the dependencies list mysql. But I have mysql already installed, from another repository (remi), with a newer version than the one suggested by yum... Is it a problem of architecture (yum suggests i386)? I risked a yes, but still impossible to install it! Here's the error I have. Transaction Check Error: package mysql-5.5.28-1.el5.remi.x86_64 (which is newer than mysql-5.0.95-1.el5_7.1.i386) is already installed Then, I tried to install it from sources with last version available (1.9.2). I downloaded the GDAL tar.gz, extracted the files and installed it like following: # tar -xzf gdal-1.9.2.tar.gz # ./configure --with-static-proj4=/usr/local/lib --with-threads --with-libtiff=internal --with-geotiff=internal --with-jpeg=internal --with-gif=internal --with-png=internal --with-libz=internal # make # make install But during the make, I have some strange errors displaying, about RegisterOGRMySQL, that I can't understand: chmod a+x gdal-config /bin/sh /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/libtool --mode=link g++ gdalinfo.lo /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/libgdal.la -o gdalinfo libtool: link: g++ .libs/gdalinfo.o -o .libs/gdalinfo /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/.libs/libgdal.so -L/usr/local/lib/lib -L/usr/kerberos/lib64 -lproj -lsqlite3 /usr/lib64/libexpat.so -lpthread -lrt -lcurl -ldl -lgssapi_krb5 -lkrb5 -lk5crypto -lcom_err -lidn -lssl -lcrypto -lz -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/usr/local/lib -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/usr/lib64 /home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/.libs/libgdal.so: undefined reference to `RegisterOGRMySQL' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [gdalinfo] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/benjamin/gdal-1.9.2/apps' make: *** [apps-target] Error 2 Has anyone a solution? Quite disapointing! 2 questions arise : Where is all this memory? How to take some of it back for my own apps?

  • How can I register a custom protocol with xdg ?

    - by julien
I've been struggling this morning trying to associate an application with a custom protocol, namely emacsclient and org-protocol. I'm calling this protocol from a webbrowser bookmarklet, and I get the following behaviour : In chromium, the "Launch Application" dialog comes up, and calls xdg-open org-protocol://... which ends up firing a new chromium frame. In firefox, I've tried setting network.protocol-handler.app.org-protocol to an empty string or my emacsclient path, anyhow I get the following error message : "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (org-protocol) isn't associated with any program" without even showing any external application selection dialog. I'm not using any desktop environment, so I need to make this work strictly with xdg, however, despite reading the shared mime info spec etc, I still can't fathom a working configuration.

  • Nginx, HAproxy, Unicorn, Rails and Node settings

    - by Julien Genestoux
Our application is currently only a "regular" web app, with no fancy things like streaming HTTP or websockets. It's mostly a Rails app, served by a few (20 on 2 machines) Unicorn workers, proxied by a venerable nginx server which deals with load balancing. This has been working quite well for the past year and the app now serves between 400 and 800 requests per second at any point during the day. We're soon releasing 2 new APIs, which are both served by a Node application : a websocket one, as well as a long polling HTTP one. (the fancy thing like the Twitter streaming API where HTTP connections never end). They both use the same port on node and since the node app is stateless, we can certainly deploy a few of them to handle the traffic. The app (node) is now deployed in 5 instances and are now listening on 5 different 'private' ports on the same host. We need to put something in front of them to load balance, but also something that is able to deal with sockets (either websocket or HTTP streaming) which are intended to stay 'up' for days. The question is then : what? I read somewhere that HAProxy does a better job than Nginx at this. What do you recommend?

  • Dependency issue when installing some packages with apt

    - by Julien Genestoux
We have a little trouble installing some php5-* packages. I am reallt not sure what is going on. We have the latest version of php5-common. # apt-get install php5-mcrypt Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: php5-mcrypt: Depends: php5-common (= 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny16) but 5.2.11-0.dotdeb.0 is to be installed E: Broken packages We get similar error with many other php5-* packages, like php5-imap.
