  • What to Learn: Rails 1.2.4 -> Rails 3

    I've recently convinced my management that our outdated version of Rails is slowing us down enough to warrant an upgrade. The approach we're taking is to start a fresh project with current technology rather than a painful upgrade. Our requirements for the project have changed and this will be much easier. The biggest problem is actually that my knowledge of Rails is out of date. I've dealt only with Rails 1.2.4 while the rest of the world has moved on long ago. What topics have I missed by being buried in my work instead of keeping up with the current Rails fashion? I'm hesitant to dig through blogs at random because I'm not sure how much has changed between the intervening versions of Rails. It's no use to learn Rails 2.1-2.3 specific stuff that is no longer useful for Rails 3.

  • Combine 3 select fields and validate as one in my User model in ruby on rails 3

    Ok I have 3 select boxes for selecting date of birth. I have constants setup in my User model to provide months, years etc.. Anyway I can successfully validate these select boxes separately. What I want to do is combine the :day, :month and :year and store in :birthday and validate the whole date as one so I can return 1 error rather than 3 separate ones. Also doing this will make it easier to store the validated date in my birthday field in my database.     I want to upgrade an application from Rails 2.3.14 to Rails 3. My question is which version of 3 should I go for? Should I go straight to the latest 3.2.2? Or should I go to a 3.0 version first? I have already looked at various railscasts and used the rails upgrade gem, but most of the documentation is from some time ago when rails 3.0 was latest version. Is there any reason not to go straight to 3.2.2?

I compiled this gem locally from a github branch since the main version seems to be broken in Rails 3. Or perhaps I am missing something else entirely. My problem is that the C# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read Pro ASP.NET MVC 4. However, most of the examples are about CRUD and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when I should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developer could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

  • Five new junior developers and lots of complex tasks. What's now?

    Our company has hired five new junior developers to help me to developer our product. Unfortunately the new features and incoming bug fixes usually require deeper knowledge than a recently graduated developer usually has (threading/concurrency, debugging performance bottlenecks in a complex system, etc.) Delegating (and planning) tasks which they (probably) can solve, answering their questions, mentoring/managing them, reviewing their code use up all of my time and I often feel that I could solve the issues less time than the whole delegating process takes (counting only my time). In addition I don't have time to solve the tasks which require deeper system knowledge/more advanced skills and it does not seem that it will change in the near future. So, what's now? What should I do to use their and my time effectively?

    I had created a demo web application by executing rails tickets and then i executed rails script/server to run it on localhost. Initially i was able to execute the application in the browser by typing localhost:3000 in the address bar, but then I deleted the folder tickets from my hard disk. Now again i created the same folder but when i try to run it using the same command rails script/server it says that vverma@l-vverma:~/railsExp/tickets$ rails script/server create File exists - script/server I tried deleting the script/server file but i still couldn't run the localhost:3000 in the browser Tried rails s as well, it gave the following output:- http://paste.ubuntu.com/1317610/ But still i was unable to run the app on 'localhost:3000' What is the solution to this

I'm 26 and have been working in Games (Production) for 6 years and I am thinking of a change, I've had exposure to VB6, VBA, HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript over the past few years and did a web design NCFE at College, but other than that, nothing else! It will probably pay half what I earn in my current job, and I am not sure if I will like that. But I am really tired of my job and want to get experience in this field. Also, working as iOS developer is great position, since they are in great demand. My country is Russia. What do you think?     I recently joined a company and it is my first job. When reading the code base, I felt that the code was not well written. It seemed to me that the code had most of the problems mentioned here and also seemed to have an Anemic Domain Model. There are no unit tests and they don't employ any code quality checking tools like findbugs or pmd. The problem I have is that the code is very difficult to understand. Maybe my conclusions are wrong because I am not that experienced. I need advice on whether to communicate the above facts to a superior or not. If I am to communicate, to whom(Tech Lead, Architect, Product Manager) and how? And if I do communicate will they take it badly since I'm a Junior and has no experience?

  • How can i be sure that professional programming is not for me ?

    Hello everybody I love programming, developing projects for hobby and learning new concepts. I am getting harder too much in current job Despite learnt many thing well. I can even hardly understand assigned tasks. I am asking why i am getting harder to myself. It may not my fault? Our architecture doesn't spend enough time to explain complicated sides of project for us or i am not enough smart one for understand fastly. Our architecture also doesn't know what kind of hell he is creating ? Seeing 3 level generic types and 4-5 level generic inheritance in domain model objects hell makes me think so really. It looks abusing concepts more than reduce complexity. Thinking that he hasn't experienced before such a big project while he is getting confused in problems of the project. May i am not in right company ? May i am not good programmer ? May i am really stupid ? Become good in programming concepts is not enough to deal big project's complications so someone should to tell me that i have to still effort too much even i am good programmer for adopting myself to any big project ? Also i had another bad experiences from previous job but my professional experiences is almost few months but i spend 2 years for learning and coding for fun and i really can say that i have well skills on OOP, Design Patterns, coding standards and deep knowledge in language currently used. I did every thing I am required to do for upgrading and when I start the rails server using rails server it gives me this Please switch to Ruby 1.9's standard CSV library. It's FasterCSV plus support for Ruby 1.9's m17n encoding engine. I am using ruby-1.9.2-p0 and have fastercsv (1.5.3) gem installed. with the help of puts statements, i was able to track down where the error occurred. i found that the execution stops at this line Bundler.require(:default, Rails.env) if defined?(Bundler) in application.rb file. I tried many things but none worked .. please help..

    I have several separate Rails 2 applications which share the same cookie. I upgraded one the applications to Rails 3.2.15 now. Mandatory secret_token in Rails 3 makes it impossible to share the session with the Rails 2 apps. I am storing the session in Redis. What the visitor only gets in the cookie is a session ID. There's no need to encrypt it. Therefore, how to disable secret_token in Rails 3? A secret is required to generate an integrity hash for cookie session data.     Hey folks, I'm migrating a Website from Rails 2 (latest) to Rails 3 (beta2). Testing with Ruby 1.9.1p378 and Ruby 1.9.2dev (2010-04-05 trunk 27225) Stuck in a situation, i don't know which part will work well. Suspect yield is the problem, but don't know exactly. In my Layout Files I use the following technique quite often: app/views/layouts/application.html.erb: <%= yield(:sidebar) || render('shared/sidebar') %> For Example the partial look like: app/views/shared/_sidebar.html.erb: <p>Default sidebar Content. Bla Bla</p> Now it is time for the key part! In any view, I want to create a content_for block (optional). This can contain a pice of HTML etc. example below. If this block is set, the pice HTML inside should render in application.html.erb. If not, Rails should render the Partial at shared/_sidebar.html.erb on the right hand side. app/views/books/index.html.erb: <% content_for :sidebar do %> <strong>You have to read REWORK, a book from 37signals!</strong> <% end %> So you've got the idea. Hopefully. This technique worked well in any Rails 2.x Application. Now, in Rails 3 (beta2) only the yield Part is working. || render('shared/sidebar') The or side will not process by rails or maybe ruby. Thanks for input and time!

  • Rails 2.3.11 Server Crashing After 4 Requests

    I have a Rails 2.3.11 application running on my local Windows machine using InstantRails. I cd to my application directory, run ruby script/server to start the server running, and point my browser to localhost:3000. I get the page I expect, and am able to click a few links to other pages (all of them are static). The problem starts when I load the 4th page or so. My server crashes, with this message: Processing HomeController#index (for 127.0.0.1 at 2012-06-23 15:48:40) [GET] Rendering template within layouts/application Rendering home/index Completed in 11ms (View: 9, DB: 1) | 200 OK [http://localhost/index] C:/rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.11/lib/active_support/memoizable.rb:46: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.8.7 (2012-02-08 patchlevel 358) [i386-mingw32] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. I've uninstalled this gem and reinstalled it, which didn't help. It doesn't seem to be the gem though, because the segmentation fault sometimes occurs in C:/rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.1.2-x86-mswin32/lib/mongrel.rb:114 or C:/rails/ruby/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:306 Versions: >ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2012-02-08 patchlevel 358) [i386-mingw32] >rails -v Rails 2.3.11 I'd like to get this fixed so while I'm developing I don't have to keep restarting my server. Any suggestions?
