• How does Amarok rip Audio CDs (in Ubuntu Lucid)?

  I'm in the process of moving my CD collection into my Amarok library. Mostly, it works great. Sometimes however, the process just hangs forever. The problem seems to occur at random (i. e. often, but not always at the same disk/track) and the consequences range from none (successful after cancel/retry) to Amarok's internal db becoming completely messed up. I would like to investigate and file a proper bug report or find a fix / workaround, but I don't understand how Amarok does the ripping. When all is working, there's a lame process encoding to a temporary file, which appears in my collection once it's finished. When the process hangs, that lame command is still there, but waiting forever for data on stdin, which seems to come from a third process. That seems to be kio_audiocd, but I don't know whether that's correct and what it's supposed to do. What's going on?

• Filter MP3s by encoder type?

  I'm on a Mac and use iTunes to manage my music collection. I'm in the process of weeding out the lower quality files that I have and would like to have only MP3s that have been encoded using the V0 setting of the LAME MP3 encoder. I tried using iTunes' smart playlist feature but as it only allows a less than rule and V0 is a variable amount, it catches valid V0 encoded files a lot of the time. Is there any alternative program on Mac that I can just point to my iTunes folder and say, "show me all files that are not encoded with LAME V0"?

• Styles of games that work at low-resolution

  I'm taking a class on compilers, and the goal is to write a compiler for Meggy Jr devices (Arduino). The goal is just to make a simple compilers with loops and variables and stuff. Obviously, that's lame, so the "real goal" is to make an impressive game on the device. The problem is that it only has 64 pixels to work with (technically 72, but the top 8 are single-color and not part of the main display, so they're really only useful for displaying things like money). My problem is thinking of something to do on a device that small. It doesn't really matter if it's original, but it can't be something that's already available. My first idea was "snake", but that comes with the SDK. Same with a side-scrolling shooter. Remaining ideas include a tower defense game (hard to write, hard to control), an RPG (same), tetris (lame).. The problem is that all of the games I like require a high-resolution screen because they have a lot of text. Even a really simple game like nethack would be hard because each creature would be a single color. tl;dr What styles of games require a. No text; and b. Few enough objects that representing them each with a single color is acceptable? EDIT: To clarify, the display is 8x8 for a total of 64 pixels, not 64x64.

• Are null references really a bad thing?

  I've heard it said that the inclusion of null references in programming languages is the "billion dollar mistake". But why? Sure, they can cause NullReferenceExceptions, but so what? Any element of the language can be a source of errors if used improperly. And what's the alternative? I suppose instead of saying this: Customer c = Customer.GetByLastName("Goodman"); // returns null if not found if (c != null) { Console.WriteLine(c.FirstName + " " + c.LastName + " is awesome!"); } else { Console.WriteLine("There was no customer named Goodman. How lame!"); } You could say this: if (Customer.ExistsWithLastName("Goodman")) { Customer c = Customer.GetByLastName("Goodman") // throws error if not found Console.WriteLine(c.FirstName + " " + c.LastName + " is awesome!"); } else { Console.WriteLine("There was no customer named Goodman. How lame!"); } But how is that better? Either way, if you forget to check that the customer exists, you get an exception. I suppose that a CustomerNotFoundException is a bit easier to debug than a NullReferenceException by virtue of being more descriptive. Is that all there is to it?

Generation loss is created because each time a lossy algorithm is applied new information will be deemed "unnecessary" and is discarded. How could an algorithm use this property to detect the transcoding of audio. 128 kbps LAME mp3 transcoded to 320 kbps LAME mp3 (I Feel You, Depeche Mode) 10.8 MB.   I have an array of tags per item like so: item1 = ['new', 'expensive'] item2 = ['expensive', 'lame'] I also have a boolean expression as a string based on possible tags: buy_it = "(new || expensive) && !lame" How can I determine if an item matches the buying criteria based on the tags associated with it? My original thought was to do a gsub on all words in buy_it to become 'true' or 'false' based on them existing in the itemx tags array and then exec the resulting string to get a boolean result. But since the Ruby community is usually more creative than me, is there a better solution?

  How do I make itunes save tagging information to the file itself? I tagged a file and then loaded it into a different itunes library on a different computer via a NFS share. The tagging info wasn't present which leads me to believe the tagging info is only stored in the itunes DB. Update I'm specifically concerned about movies files, so if you RClick - Get info Options - Media Kind (Movies/TV/etc) Video - Show/Episode/Season These tags don't seem to be saved to the file itself, this is lame.

  I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a way to scroll content in a kindle book. I thought I had the problem solved by using calibre but I quickly discovered that since the content is DRMed, I'm not allowed to read the book with this reader. lame The specific book I'm reading has code examples in it, but it is difficult to follow them without being able to specifically scroll through the examples. This doesn't even touch on the fact that the code content is also poorly formatted.

• windows 7 virtual wireless adapter keeps going to sleep

  Just a quick question that I can't see mentioned anywhere online. I have a Windows 7 box configured like these guys recommend http://www.itgeekdiary.com/windows-7-as-an-wi-fi-access-point/ simply so that I can have my Windows 7 box as a wifi access point or a wifi emitter. It's also called a Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. But it powers off and shuts down automatically and stops working. Basically everything works as intended and then - well -it will stopped working when I am not at the Windows 7 PC for a long time. The problem seems to be that every time my PC goes to "power save / sleep" and in the morning the Windows 7 machine "wakes" but blooming heck the wifi has stopped and you have to power cycle the PC (which is very uncool). When I power Cycle I have to do the following as administrator C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan start hostednetwork I then tried a gazllion things involving services and power management and eventually discovered that if I run the following commands as administrator it will be ok (for a bit) but every 3rd ot 4th time I try this "trick" it simply fails. the trick that seems to work 3 out of 4 times (i.e. "most" of the time) C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan stop hostednetwork C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe wlan start hostednetwork But why does this only work "some" of the time? What else I did by myself: on every manage adapter properties (that relates to the wifi) I right clicked [configure] [power management] /disabled/ "allow the computer to power off to save power" <- this made no difference Also (and this is a bit annoying) there is no system tray app/GUI for the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter output signal ... none... so (lame as it sounds) the ONLY way I can check if it's on is to physically go to another device and SCAN.. lame so my question can probably be solved by any of the following: a) can I stop Windows 7 sleeping this wifi when the machine sleeps b) can I force Windows to force wake this process on wake? if so how? c) what is the service / process REALLY called and how do I restart it if it crashes d) how can I flush the wifi properly rather power cycle the host machine e) anyone have a link to an program or app that can sit in the system tray that shows windows 7 wifi hotspot emission status (on/off/etc etc) Since I am a programmer I can easily write a vbs script / windows exe to fix this (and I will share this solution) and the gui problem if I can work out the actual service that is running that netsh stops/starts

• SEO: Moving articles from one domain to another

  Currently I have articles up on a website (site A) that is not mine (but I can remove the articles.) The article's aren't faring well (not only due to the recent Google changes) but because they really could do better if I made some tweaks myself instead of relying on the domain owner's SEO skills. So I would like to set up my own website and have just my articles on it (site B.) In the past when I've moved content, I've set up redirects but this time I can't do that. What would be the best way to move the articles without having to worry about them being counted as duplicate content or any other lame stuff? Should I, A: Save the articles on my computer and remove them from Site A. Wait for Google to remove them from the index (several months.) B: Remove the articles from Site A and immediately place them on Site B.

  I have recently installed Ubuntu server with LAMP,OpenSSH and mail on Oracle's VM, it's incoming networking was recently working, apache's default message could be seen when opening 127.0.0.1:8080. But now it's not! :( Could you give me any tips?   I am currently polishing a digital CCG where people can play against friend and random opponents in a classical Magic the Gathering-like duel CCG. I plan to award the players with 20 ingame currency units (lets call them gold) for each hour they are playing, 50 for each day they are playing and X for each victory. Now, the X is what I am trying to calculate here, since I would prefer keeping the currency to a certain value, but also with to entice the players to battle. I could go with a solid figure, say 25, for beating up an opponent. But that would result in experienced players only beating up newly started players, making the experience lame for both. I could also make a laddered tier, where you start at level 1, and raise in level as you defeat your opponents, where winning over a player awards you his level x 2 in gold. Which would you prefer if you were playing a game like this. There is no gold-based scoreboard, but the gold is used to purchase new cards along the way.

  OK I have had Ubuntu for a month now and have absolutely been loving it. I have been able to fix problems in the terminal etc. Until I downloaded Deluge. Deluge does not work and it is acting like a virus. I have tried all the recommendations I can find I have tried 5 or so different terminal commands and nothing works. I can no longer choose another torrent down loader like transmissions because it is no longer on the list when asked which program I want to use to download a torrent all I get is Deluge which is pretty lame since I have removed it like 5 different ways.   I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese.
