  Characteristics of a Web service that promote reusability and change:  Standardized Data Exchange Formats (XML, JSON) Standardized communication protocols (Soap, Rest) Promotes Loosely Coupled Systems  Standardized Data Exchange Formats (XML, JSON) XML W3.org defines Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a simplistic text format derived from SGML. XML was designed to solve challenges found in large-scale electronic publishing. In addition,  XML is playing an important role in the exchange of data primarily focusing on data exchange on the web. JSON JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is a human-readable text-based standard designed for data interchange. This format is used for serializing and transmitting data over a network connection in a structured format. The primary use of JSON is to transmit data between a server and web application. JSON is an alternative to XML. Standardized communication protocols (Soap, Rest) Soap W3Scools.com defines SOAP as a simple XML-based protocol. This protocol lets applications exchange data over HTTP.  SOAP provides a way to communicate between applications running on different operating systems, with different technologies and programming languages. Rest In 2007, Stefan Tilkov defines Representational State Transfer (REST) as a set of principles that outlines how Web standards are supposed to be used.  Using REST in an application will ensure that it exploits the Web’s architecture to its benefit. Promotes Loosely Coupled Systems “Loose coupling as an approach to interconnecting the components in a system or network so that those components, also called elements, depend on each other to the least extent practicable. • Defining reliable SIlverlight 4 architecture

  Hello everybody, It's my first question on SO. I know that there were many topics on Silverlight and architecture but didn't find answers that satisfies me. I'm ASP.NET MVC developer and are used to work on architectures built with the best practices (loose coupling with DI, etc.) Now I'm faced to the new Silverlight 4 project and would like to be sure I'm doing the best choices as I'm not experienced. Main features required by the applications are as follows : use existing SQL Server Database but with possibility to move to the cloud. using EF4 for the data acess with SQL Server. exitensibility : adding new modules without changing the main host. loose coupling. I was looking at different webcasts (Taulty, etc.), blogs about Silverlight and came up with the following architecture. EF 4 for data access (as specified with the requirements) WCF RIA Services for mid-tiers controling access to data for queries and enabling end-to-end support for data validation, authentication and roles. MEF Support for enabling modules. Unity 2.0 for DI. The problem is that I don't know how to define a reliable architecture where all these elements play well together. Should I use a framework instead like Prism or Caliburn? But for now I'm not sure what scenarios they support. What's the best usages for Unity in Silverlight ? I used to use IoC in ASP.NET MVC for loos coupling and other things like interception for audit logging. It seems that for Silverlight Unity doesn't support Interception. I would like to use it to enable loose coupling and to enable to move to the cloud if needed. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Component Development within SOA

  How do the concepts of component development work within SOA? Let’s first break this question down by defining what component development is. Component development is the process of implementing specific functionality in the form of small units of complied code that can be reused across multiple applications or product families. Typically, components are integrated with other components forming composite components. In general, most interaction between components is done through interfaces to promote loose coupling. The concept of loose coupling refers to the interconnections of components in a system so that their component dependences based on contracts defined by interfaces. A real life example of this can be experienced while using Legos to build a structure. If we consider each Lego block as a component, then when two more Legos are connected they form a composite component due to the fact that the structure is made up of multiple components.   It is important to note that composite components can be made from standard components and other composite components. Eventually as various components and composite components become interconnected a structure begins to form in the shape of an application or in the case of Legos in the form of Lego structure. Software components can loosely be defined as small units of related implemented functionality that can communicate with other components or may have dependencies on other components. Based on the definitions provide above, it is my personal opinion that SOA works well with the concepts of component development. The SOA architectural style focuses on creating loosely coupled services. Each service much like a component offers related functionality that can be accessed by various requesting clients.  In addition services can be derived just like components in that services can be built on other services to form composite services. In summary, the concepts of component development can work within SOA based on the example above.

• Linux HA - Best Heartbeat hardware solution

  Hi all I would ask anyone what is the best layer 2 medium for heartbeat in Linux and how it's best configured. More precisely I've been thinking about a dedicated NIC for that purpose but then i thought that if a switch breaks then i would loose the heartbeat connection for most of the cluster and STONITH 'BUM'!!! Will probably loose my job after :) Distributing the heartbeat onto the main NICs of every node trough a vif sounds reasonable but im not sure if this is the best option (at least the switches are redundant to some extent). Is it possible to use heartbeat over a bonded interface and that sounds reasonable? Do you have any other tip/solution for that issue?

  ok what Im doing normally works but since my rule "includes" itself is giving me issues and can't find a solution after hours working on different options. I have a .htaccess with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/3.15.0/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /3.15.0/$1 [L] this is for my software versions, I have a program that can request sometimes versions that are updated and in the server may be behind a couple version so I want to be able to say that whatever is comming in forward to the latest version that in this example is 3.15.0 /var/www/nameblabla/3.15.0 my .htaccess is on /var/www/nameblabla/.htaccess so the first Condition is to ignore request that already has the right path and version.. the second should be to grab all request and forward to 3.15.0... and of course not loose the path to the files I want from inside that should be the same. so far I can only get it to redirect to such directory but will loose the path and others I get the "Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects" I guess this is because Im including the 3.15.0 path Any help or another way to do this with out mod_rewrite?

• AppFabric named cache, what happens if you lose a cache host?

  I'm getting my head around how app fabric clustering works and there's something I'm not sure about. Given a structure where we have one named cache, with two lead hosts and (say) three cache hosts and high availability turned off and the lead host(s) performing the management role. When one cache host goes down do you loose the data that was on that cache host? In this MSDN article it states: Data on the non-lead hosts would be lost (assuming high availability was not enabled), but the rest of the cluster could continue serving and storing data But I was unsure if redundancy is built into the system. Would you loose x amount of data or would one of the other cache hosts store this data also and pick up the slack?

• In MVC, why can't a model create a view?

  I have a web application written in Perl with a controller, some "views" and some "Models". Each "Model" is corresponding to one "View". The controller (one file) creates an Model object corresponding to each view (view is a CGI argument) then retrieve the view from the module it has just created. Indeed, this should be bad thing but can you argue a bit more about it. My first idea was that since the object "Model" depends upon the "view", then the "model" is actually a view. But also the fact that ALL the cgi parameters are passed to the Model causes the "Model" to become not truelly a view but to loose all interest, since it is only related to the current implementation of the web apps. On other words, that the "Model" keep model but loose its "comprehensiveness" ("Model" is not easily understandable). I'm am quite new in project analysis, so please do not be too harsh. Why is this bad? • Determing software estimates and tracking past estimates

  I know that this probably has as many answers as users here on SO, but software estimation always seemed like an esoteric science. Software developers don't have a magic book to refer to as exist in many other industries. I've been spending the last couple of days working on putting together some estimates for a bit of work that I am proposing for a freelance project that I am working on and am having trouble getting it down. I'm not experienced with any real software estimation practices and am trying to go from the gut based on my experience but also trying to be a little loose (not too loose though) on the estimates to leave me a bit of room to work. I read this blog entry http://blogs.popart.com/2007/07/what-scotty-from-star-trek-can-teach-us-about-managing-expectations/ that was linked to from SO and would like to start tracking my estimates at work as well even though I'm not really required to create estimates there. What tools or techniques would you recommend? Also, how much padding do you usually add in to a time estimate?

  Hello, I'm working on games using javascript some html and css, and I was wondering if there was any way to secure the game so that the user can't just call game.php?result=victory to finish the game and earn some point. As of right now here are the solution I have. For a chance game, start the page with the result already in place, win or loose, then just do some animations to show it, but all the score and win/loose stuff is done server-side. For a battle game, just get the action from the javascript call, and do the damage calculation, reaction of the oponent on the server and just send back the data. but the last solution imply that I will have to send actions each time the user do anything. This might work for a turn by turn battle game, but I think it would be to slow for any other kind of game. So my question is, is there some kind of secure way I can prep my javascript to secure the infomation sent.

  Hi Guys, We have an SVN at http:/XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:1111/svn/AB/ - and the first two folders of the SVN are like http:/XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:1111/svn/AB/abc/filefolder/ The problem is we want to move the entire svn to get rid of /abc/filefolder/ - as the entire project sits under /abc/filefolder/ [created long ago and never bothered to change] (que stupid yes yes) How would we could about fixing this so we dont loose logs etc ? We dont want to have to export and create a new svn - since then we loose all our log files. But we want to "move" the svn root so for example it becomes From: http:/XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:1111/svn/AB/abc/filefolder/documents/ To: http:/XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:1111/svn/AB/documents/ Any help appreciated ? • scrolling a readonly cell in NSTableview?

  I have a table that the user should not be able to edit directly (although user actions may cause changes). One column may contain a string too long for any reasonable size cell, so to see everything there, the user needs to scroll the cell (using arrow keys, for example). If I make either the column or cell not editible, I loose the ability to scroll the cell. If I make it editable, of course, I loose the ability to keep the user from changeing it. (I'm using NSArray controller and a couple of NSObject controllers to get from the model to the table view using bindings. Binding compliance via @property(copy) and @synthesize.   so I am using ubuntu 11.10, just changed from windows to ubuntu, and one of my file systems, I accidentally set it up as a linux swap partition and now I want to acces my files, as I did in windows, but I do not know any secure way to change that partition to a file system without formating it and loosing the data. Because I do not want to loose the data I have there. Does deleting the partition and mounting it again solve the problem?

• alsa doesn't won't in vlc

  Alsa Audio Output works fine from terminal aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav . But i got to change from default to Alsa Audio Output in vlc . Found in Tools Perfernces Audio Outputs The issue lie when i change it to Alsa i Loose all sound. When i leave it defualt i get a annoying Audio delay of like 200ms or 500ms. from what i have found you have to use Alsa Audio Outpu to fix that issue.

  I have high-quality SVG card images, but they drastically lose their quality when I downsize them. I have tried two ways of rendering cards (using Inkscape and Imagemagics): 1) Render SVG to high-res PNG and resize it then; 2) Render SVG to image of proper size at once. Both approaches generate blurry card images, which looks even worse than old Windows cards. What are the best way to generate smaller card images from SVG sources and not to loose their quality a lot?

• How to handle interruptions in developer work without losing concentration? [closed]

  I work as a developer for some years now. Mainly the issue why it's antisocial work is because you need to spend much time programming. I've been always the kind of developer who likes to cut off from any sources of distraction and spend several hours on project because in this way i (as i hope) do it faster. There are also other kinds of developers, more social that can chat, read, watch movies while development and they are ok with this and don't hesitate to be interrupted in their work in any time and come back to the project without any problem. For me any distraction is source of frustration because i need to spend substantial time to load my mind with all info about the project and to concentrate back on the tasks. I always thought it's better to do this that way because project is completed faster. But it makes some things difficult: it's hard to chat with someone who needs to have some important info: because you are a bit frustrated when you know you loose your Zen. And sometimes its more important to chat with someone than to loose Zen. Well.. mostly in any other kind of work the ability to be "multitask" is very important. But as a developer and as a person it's also very important to stay social. And i see now that the problem of concentration makes it difficult to make the right chose: the cost of maintaining concentration is just sometimes so damn high! So is it only me that i have so little concentration skills so any interruption is for me a big deal? Maybe it's just i have so bad memory so that i dont remember all issues of a project so long? Or maybe i develop the project in a fashion that requires me to store so much info on my mind only to be able to start working with code? Or should i just accept that being more social will make me finish project slower and in the fashion that i personally consider non 100% productive? And it's just normal thing and i should just accept it and start to live like any other person who has many works and don't assume that programming is in any case other than any other work and i just do fuzz about the whole concentration thing? This is question for mid-pro developers. I think you was having the same dillema in your life. I would be glad if you could help me take the right road here because it's just driving me and i suppose people i work with crazy for years.
