  • Where can I find useful Maven documentation?

    - by jprete
I don't have to play with Maven configuation often, but when I do, it's usually to do something odd, like use a build plugin that hasn't matured enough to be on the main Maven repositories. The Maven documentation that I find doesn't cover unusual use cases well and tends to assume you already know what you're doing. Where can I find really useful, well-written documentation on Maven that also covers the corner cases of usage?

  • Maven does not resolve a local Grails plug-in

    - by Drew
My goal is to take a Grails web application and build it into a Web ARchive (WAR file) using Maven, and the key is that it must populate the "plugins" folder without live access to the internet. An "out of the box" Grails webapp will already have the plugins folder populated with JAR files, but the maven build script should take care of populating it, just like it does for any traditional WAR projects (such as WEB-INF/lib/ if it's empty) This is an error when executing mvn grails:run-app with Grails 1.1 using Maven 2.0.10 and org.grails:grails-maven-plugin:1.0. (This "hibernate-1.1" plugin is needed to do GORM.) [INFO] [grails:run-app] Running pre-compiled script Environment set to development Plugin [hibernate-1.1] not installed, resolving.. Reading remote plugin list ... Error reading remote plugin list [svn.codehaus.org], building locally... Unable to list plugins, please check you have a valid internet connection: svn.codehaus.org Reading remote plugin list ... Error reading remote plugin list [plugins.grails.org], building locally... Unable to list plugins, please check you have a valid internet connection: plugins.grails.org Plugin 'hibernate' was not found in repository. If it is not stored in a configured repository you will need to install it manually. Type 'grails list-plugins' to find out what plugins are available. The build machine does not have access to the internet and must use an internal/enterprise repository, so this error is just saying that maven can't find the required artifact anywhere. That dependency is already included with the stock Grails software that's installed locally, so I just need to figure out how to get my POM file to unpackage that ZIP file into my webapp's "plugins" folder. I've tried installing the plugin manually to my local repository and making it an explicit dependency in POM.xml, but it's still not being recognized. Maybe you can't pull down grails plugins like you would a standard maven reference? mvn install:install-file -DgroupId=org.grails -DartifactId=grails-hibernate -Dversion=1.1 -Dpackaging=zip -Dfile=%GRAILS_HOME%/plugins/grails-hibernate-1.1.zip I can manually setup the Grails webapp from the command-line, which creates that local ./plugins folder properly. This is a step in the right direction, so maybe the question is: how can I incorporate this goal into my POM? mvn grails:install-plugin -DpluginUrl=%GRAILS_HOME%/plugins/grails-hibernate-1.1.zip Here is a copy of my POM.xml file, which was generated using an archetype. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/maven-v4_0_0.xsd"> <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> <groupId>com.samples</groupId> <artifactId>sample-grails</artifactId> <packaging>war</packaging> <name>Sample Grails webapp</name> <properties> <sourceComplianceLevel>1.5</sourceComplianceLevel> </properties> <version>0.0.1-SNAPSHOT</version> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>org.grails</groupId> <artifactId>grails-crud</artifactId> <version>1.1</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>org.grails</groupId> <artifactId>grails-gorm</artifactId> <version>1.1</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>opensymphony</groupId> <artifactId>oscache</artifactId> <version>2.4</version> <exclusions> <exclusion> <groupId>commons-logging</groupId> <artifactId>commons-logging</artifactId> </exclusion> <exclusion> <groupId>javax.jms</groupId> <artifactId>jms</artifactId> </exclusion> <exclusion> <groupId>javax.servlet</groupId> <artifactId>servlet-api</artifactId> </exclusion> </exclusions> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>hsqldb</groupId> <artifactId>hsqldb</artifactId> <version>1.8.0.7</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId> <artifactId>slf4j-log4j12</artifactId> <version>1.5.6</version> <scope>runtime</scope> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>javax.servlet</groupId> <artifactId>jstl</artifactId> <version>1.2</version> </dependency> <!-- <dependency> <groupId>org.grails</groupId> <artifactId>grails-hibernate</artifactId> <version>1.1</version> <type>zip</type> </dependency> --> </dependencies> <build> <pluginManagement /> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.grails</groupId> <artifactId>grails-maven-plugin</artifactId> <version>1.0</version> <extensions>true</extensions> <executions> <execution> <goals> <goal>init</goal> <goal>maven-clean</goal> <goal>validate</goal> <goal>config-directories</goal> <goal>maven-compile</goal> <goal>maven-test</goal> <goal>maven-war</goal> <goal>maven-functional-test</goal> </goals> </execution> </executions> </plugin> <plugin> <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <source>${sourceComplianceLevel}</source> <target>${sourceComplianceLevel}</target> </configuration> </plugin> </plugins> </build> </project>

  • maven compile fails because i have a non-maven jar

    - by pstanton
i have a couple of internal libraries which i haven't/don't know how to add to my local maven repository. i've added them to the project's classpath but my maven-compile failes stating that it can't find the classes in the external jars (as expected): [ERROR] Failed to execute goal org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-compiler-plugin:2.0.2:compile (default-compile) on project proj: Compilation failure: Compilation failure: dir\src\main\java\package\MyClass.java:[8,25] package blah does not exist dir\src\main\java\package\MyClass.java:[9,25] package blah does not exist dir\src\main\java\package\MyClass.java:[21,12] cannot find symbol symbol : variable Blah location: class package.MyClass dir\src\main\java\package\MyClass.java:[28,9] cannot find symbol symbol : variable Blah location: class package.MyClass how do i tell maven about a jar i've sneakily added to my project's classpath so it can use it to compile?

  • Can't get automated release working with Hudson + Git + Maven Release Plugin

    - by Christopher Maier
As the title says, I'm trying to get an automated release job working on Hudson. It's a Maven project, and all the code is in Git. Manually, I do the release on my personal machine like so: git checkout master mvn -B release:prepare release:perform This works perfectly. The Maven release plugin properly pushes the release tag to the origin repository as well as the next commit that bumps the version to the next SNAPSHOT. However, when I run this same Maven job through Hudson (either by creating my own "release" job or by using the M2 Release Plugin) it doesn't work so well. The release tag gets pushed out to the origin repository, and the release gets pushed out to our Nexus repository, but the subsequent commit that bumps the version to the next SNAPSHOT doesn't go out. Furthermore, the "master" branch in the origin repository doesn't get changed at all. I've looked in Hudson's workspace for the job, however, and the version has been updated. After looking at the output from the Hudson job, it appears that the Git plugin does not actually checkout "master", but rather it's SHA1 id. That is, if the "master" branch label points to commit "f6af76f541f1a1719e9835cdb46a183095af6861", Hudson does git checkout -f f6af76f541f1a1719e9835cdb46a183095af6861 instead of git checkout -f master As a result, the changes that the Maven release plugin is making are not actually on any branch (certainly not on "master") and these changes don't make it to the origin repository. It runs on the right code, but bookkeeping-wise, the changes seem to get lost because no branch label points to them. Has anybody gotten the Hudson + Git + Maven Release Plugin combo to work properly? Is there some additional configuration somewhere I can set to make this happen? Or is this a bug in the Hudson Git plugin? Thanks in advance.

  • Why 2 versions of jetty maven plugins ?

    - by Flueras Bogdan
Hello, I set up a new webapp maven project and wanted to test it with jetty's maven plugin. So issuded in the console the command: mvn jetty:run After defining the pluginGroup in Maven's setting file I ran once again the command. Unfortunately, it failed because i was using one of the below mentioned versions of the plugin. The first has artifact id: maven-jetty-plugin and the 2nd:jetty-maven-plugin. Why there are 2 maven based plugins for achieving the same thing - running jetty? Why do they have to bring so much confusion? Or be so kind as to explain me the differences between them. Thank you.

  • Getting Started with Maven + Jaxb project + IntellijIdea

    - by Em Ae
    I am complete new to IntellijIdea and i am looking for some step-by-step process to set up a basic project. My project depends on Maven + Jaxb classes so i need a Maven project so that when i compile this project, the JAXB Objects are generated by Maven plugins. Now i started like this I created a blank project say MaJa project Added Maven Module to it Added following settings in POM.XML <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd"> <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> <groupId>MaJa</groupId> <artifactId>MaJa</artifactId> <version>1.0</version> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>javax.xml.bind</groupId> <artifactId>jaxb-api</artifactId> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId> <artifactId>jaxb-impl</artifactId> <version>2.1</version> </dependency> </dependencies> <build> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>jaxb2-maven-plugin</artifactId> <executions> <execution> <goals> <goal>xjc</goal> </goals> </execution> </executions> <configuration> <schemaDirectory>${basedir}/src/main/resource/api/MaJa</schemaDirectory> <packageName>com.rimt.shopping.api.web.ws.v1.model</packageName> <outputDirectory>${build.directory}</outputDirectory> </configuration> </plugin> </plugins> </build> </project> First of all, is it right settings ? I tried clicking on Make/Compile 'MaJa' from Project Right Click Menu and it didn't do anything. I will be looking forward to yoru replies.

  • Maven WTP webapp with maven-eclipse-plugin but without m2eclipse

    - by chrsk
I use the eclipse:eclipse goal to generate an Eclipse Project environment. The deployment works fine. The goal creates the var classpath entries for all needed dependencies. With m2eclipse there was the Maven Container which defines an export folder which was WEB-INF/lib for me. But i don't want to rely on m2eclipse so i don't want to use it anymore. the class path entries which are generated by eclipse:eclipse goal don't have such a export folder. While booting the servlet container with WTP it publishes all resources and classes except the libraries to the context. Whats missing to publish the needed libs, or isn't that possible without m2eclipse integration? IDE Configuration Eclipse 3.5 JEE Galileo Maven 2 m2eclipse The maven-eclipse-plugin configuration <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-eclipse-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.8</version> <configuration> <projectNameTemplate>opensaga-[artifactId]</projectNameTemplate> <useProjectReferences>false</useProjectReferences> <downloadSources>false</downloadSources> <downloadJavadocs>false</downloadJavadocs> <wtpmanifest>true</wtpmanifest> <wtpversion>2.0</wtpversion> <wtpapplicationxml>true</wtpapplicationxml> <wtpContextName>opensaga-[artifactId]</wtpContextName> <additionalProjectFacets> <jst.java>5.0</jst.java> <jst.web>2.3</jst.web> </additionalProjectFacets> </configuration> </plugin>

  • Maven Release Plugin with JAXB issues

    - by Wysawyg
    Hiya, We've got a project set up to use the Maven Release Plugin which includes a phase that unpacks a JAR of XML schemas pulled from Artifactory and a phase that generates XJC classes. We're on maven release 2.2.1. Unfortunately the latter phase is executing before the former which means that it isn't generating the XJC classes for the schema. A partial POM.XML looks like: <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <source>1.6</source> <target>1.6</target> </configuration> </plugin> <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <executions> <execution> <id>unpack</id> <!-- phase>generate-sources</phase --> <goals> <goal>unpack</goal> <goal>copy</goal> </goals> <configuration> <artifactItems> <artifactItem> <groupId>ourgroupid</groupId> <artifactId>ourschemas</artifactId> <version>5.1</version> <outputDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/main/webapp/xsd</outputDirectory> <excludes>META-INF/</excludes> <overWrite>true</overWrite> </artifactItem> </artifactItems> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>maven-buildnumber-plugin</artifactId> <version>0.9.6</version> <executions> <execution> <phase>validate</phase> <goals> <goal>create</goal> </goals> </execution> </executions> <configuration> <doCheck>true</doCheck> <doUpdate>true</doUpdate> </configuration> </plugin> <plugin> <groupId>org.jvnet.jaxb2.maven2</groupId> <artifactId>maven-jaxb2-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <schemaDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/main/webapp/xsd</schemaDirectory> <schemaIncludes> <include>*.xsd</include> <include>*/*.xsd</include> </schemaIncludes> <verbose>true</verbose> <!-- args> <arg>-Djavax.xml.validation.SchemaFactory:http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema=org.apache.xerces.jaxp.validation.XMLSchemaFactory</arg> </args--> </configuration> <executions> <execution> <goals> <goal>generate</goal> </goals> </execution> </executions> </plugin> I've tried googling for it, unfortunately I ended up with a case of thousands of links none of which were actually relevant so I'd be very grateful if someone knew how to configure the order of the release plugin steps to ensure a was fully executed before it did b. Thanks

  • New to Maven-- Creating Java EE Projects

    - by M.C.
Greetings-- I've been developing Java EE web apps with Eclipse for about a year. My employer doesn't use Maven, but the more I read about it, the more convinced I am that Maven + Hudson will be greatly beneficial for us. First, though, I have to become comfortable with those technologies in my spare time, so that I can create a proof-of-concept. Right now, I'm still a Maven newbie. Is there a set of best practices for creating Java EE web apps with Maven? For example, I could create a project with a basic archetype and then add all of the necessary JARs by putting dependencies in the POM for the servlet container, EJB, EclipseLink, etc... That might work, but it might not be the best way to do it. I'd greatly appreciate any guidance that you could provide on this topic. Thank you very much!

  • Overwrite archetypes in Maven

    - by Random
Hello again! I'm having some trouble using Maven for my archetypes and I will need to overwrite some. I launch an instruction that does an archetype:generate in an archetype already existing directory. Is there a parameter that let's me overwrite existing archetypes? I have search the maven definitve guide but it states that the only parameters accepted are: -DgroupId -DartifactId -Dversion -DpackageName -DarchetypeGroupId -DarchetypeArtifactId -DarchetypeVersion -DinteractiveMode I could just search the directory and delete the files, but this proccess is going to be done automatically (so no human involved, no brains involved) and I wouldn't like he machine deleting things around. • maven test cannot load cross-module resources/properties ?

    - by smallufo
I have a maven mantained project with some modules . One module contains one XML file and one parsing class. Second module depends on the first module. There is a class that calls the parsing class in the first module , but maven seems cannot test the class in the second module. Maven test reports : java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Properties.loadFromXML(Properties.java:851) at foo.firstModule.Parser.<init>(Parser.java:92) at foo.secondModule.Program.<init>(Program.java:84) In "Parser.java" (in the first module) , it uses Properties and InputStream to read/parse an XML file : InputStream xmlStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream("Data.xml"); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.loadFromXML(xmlStream); The "data.xml" is located in first module's resources/foo/firstModule directory , and it tests OK in the first module. It seems when testing the second module , maven cannot correctly load the Data.xml in the first module . I thought I can solve the problem by using maven-dependency-plugin:unpack to solve it . In the second module's POM file , I add these snippets : <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.1</version> <executions> <execution> <id>data-copying</id> <phase>test-compile</phase> <goals> <goal>unpack</goal> </goals> <configuration> <artifactItems> <artifactItem> <groupId>foo</groupId> <artifactId>firstModule</artifactId> <type>jar</type> <includes>foo/firstModule/Data.xml</includes> <outputDirectory>${project.build.directory}/classes</outputDirectory> </artifactItem> </artifactItems> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> In this POM file , I try to unpack the first module , and copy the Data.xml to classes/foo/firstModule/ directory , and then run tests. And indeed , it is copied to the right directory , I can find the "Data.xml" file in "target/classes/foo/firstModule" directory. But maven test still complains it cannot read the File (Properties.loadFromXML() throws NPE). I don't know how to solve this problem. I tried other output directory , such as ${project.build.directory}/resources , and ${project.build.directory}/test-classes , but all in vain... Any advices now ? Thanks in advanced. Environments : Maven 2.2.1 , eclipse , m2eclipse

  • Maven webapp with maven-eclipse-plugin doesn't generates <dependent-module>

    - by chrsk
I use the eclipse:eclipse goal to generate an Eclipse Project environment. The deployment works fine. The goal creates the var classpath entries for all needed dependencies. With m2eclipse there was the Maven Container which defines an export folder which was WEB-INF/lib for me. But i don't want to rely on m2eclipse so i don't use it anymore. the class path entries which are generated by eclipse:eclipse goal don't have such a export folder. While booting the servlet container with WTP it publishes all resources and classes except the libraries to the context. Whats missing to publish the needed libs, or isn't that possible without m2eclipse integration? Enviroment Eclipse 3.5 JEE Galileo Apache Maven 2.2.1 (r801777; 2009-08-06 21:16:01+0200) Java version: 1.6.0_14 m2eclipse The maven-eclipse-plugin configuration <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-eclipse-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.8</version> <configuration> <projectNameTemplate>someproject-[artifactId]</projectNameTemplate> <useProjectReferences>false</useProjectReferences> <downloadSources>false</downloadSources> <downloadJavadocs>false</downloadJavadocs> <wtpmanifest>true</wtpmanifest> <wtpversion>2.0</wtpversion> <wtpapplicationxml>true</wtpapplicationxml> <wtpContextName>someproject-[artifactId]</wtpContextName> <additionalProjectFacets> <jst.web>2.3</jst.web> </additionalProjectFacets> </configuration> </plugin> The generated files After executing the eclipse:eclipse goal, the dependent-module is not listed in my generated .settings/org.eclipse.wst.common.component, so on server booting i miss the depdencies. This is what i get: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <project-modules id="moduleCoreId" project-version="1.5.0"> <wb-module deploy-name="someproject-core"> <wb-resource deploy-path="/" source-path="src/main/java"/> <wb-resource deploy-path="/" source-path="src/main/webapp"/> <wb-resource deploy-path="/" source-path="src/main/resources"/> </wb-module> </project-modules>

i just tried to move from helios to maven with my gwt 2.4 application. so i began to follow the steps here: http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/wiki/WorkingWithMaven but on step 3 - installing the feature "m2e connector for build-helper-maven-plugin" i get an error from Eclipse: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. • Maven 3 plugin - How to programatically exclude a dependency and all its transitive dependencies?

    - by electrotype
I'm developing a Maven 3 plugin and I want to exclude some dependencies, and their transitive dependencies, when a configuration is set to true in the plugin. I don't want to use <exclusions> in the POM itself, even in a profile. I want to exclude those dependencies programatically. In fact, what I want is to prevent the dependency jars to be included in the final war (I'm building a war), when a plugin configuration is set to true. I tried : @Mojo(requiresDependencyResolution=ResolutionScope.COMPILE, name="compileHook",defaultPhase=LifecyclePhase.COMPILE) public class compileHook extends AbstractMojo { @Override public void execute() throws MojoExecutionException, MojoFailureException { // ... Set<Artifact> artifacts = this.project.getArtifacts(); for(Artifact artifact : artifacts) { if("org.package.to.remove".equalsIgnoreCase(artifact.getGroupId())) { artifact.setScope("provided"); } } // ... } } Since this occures at the compile phase, it will indeed remove the artifacts with a group id "org.package.to.remove" from having their jars included in the war when packaged. But this doesn't remove the transitive artifacts those dependencies add! What is the best way to programatically remove some dependencies, and their transitive dependencies, from being included in a final .jar/.war?

  • Help me understand making maven project w/ non-maven jar dependencies usable by others

    - by deet
Hi, I'm in the process of learning maven (and java packaging & distribution) with a new oss project I'm making as practice. Here's my situation, all java of course: My main project is ProjectA, maven-based in a github repository. I have also created one utility project, maven-based, in github: ProjectB. ProjectA depends on a project I have heavily modified that originally was from a google-code ant-based repository, ProjectC. So, how do I set up the build for ProjectA such that someone can download ProjectA.jar and use it without needing to install jars for ProjectB and ProjectC, and also how do I set up the build such that someone could check out ProjectA and run only 'mvn package' for a full compile? (Additionally, what should I do with my modified version of ProjectC? include the class files directly into ProjectA, or fork the project into something that could then be used by as a maven dependency?) I've been reading around, links such as this SO question and this SO question, but I'm unclear how those relate to my particular circumstance. So, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
