  • Geographically limited / gradual release process

    I am looking for more information on a gradual release process - that is when you release new version of a software only to certain set of end users, mostly geographically limited (or limited by a reach of particular server). Google seems to be blind to this term - that indicates that's not how it's called. What's the name then? EDIT: An example of what I mean is when Facebook rolled out new image galleries they were first visible to certain users only, then to whole US and then to the rest of the world.

  • Exclude files only in "release" in VS2008 config

    Hi Guys, I was wondering how to "Exclude" individual files in the "release" web.csproj config of my solution. I've seen other answers and they all feature "include" - but this is not what I am wanting to achieve. I only want to exclude around 10-15 files from a "release" package ? I don't want to manually edit the web.csproj file - so is there any way I can do this via web.config or ? How would I go about doing this ?

    I have a set of Python projects which are under the mercurial VCS. I would like to automate the following tasks: Run the test suite for every commit (CI). Make a source distribution for every commit, which has a tag in mercurial. This is regarded as a new release. Copy the distribution to a special repository. There is Jenkins as a proposal for similar questions, but I'm not sure if it can handle the release management like intended.

    Hi, According to this reference entry for operator new ( http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/std/new/operator%20new/ ) : Global dynamic storage operator functions are special in the standard library: All three versions of operator new are declared in the global namespace, not in the std namespace. The first and second versions are implicitly declared in every translation unit of a C++ program: The header does not need to be included for them to be present. This seems to me to imply that the third version of operator new (placement new) is not implicitly declared in every translation unit of a C++ program and the header <new> does need to be included for it to be present. Is that correct? If so, how is it that using both g++ and MS VC++ Express compilers it seems I can compile code using the third version of new without #include <new> in my source code?     Ladies & Gentlemen, I have been getting a lot of questions over the last month or two about the next release of WCI codenamed "Neo". Unfortunately I cannot give you an exact release date which I know you all would be asking me for if we were talking face to face, but I can definitely provide you with information about some of the features that will be made available. So over the next few blog entries, I am going to provide you with details about two features and even provide you with screenshots for some of them. KD Browser Portlet This portlet will provide a windows explorer look and feel to the Knowledge Directory from with a Community Page or My Page. Not only will the portlet provide access to the folder structure and the documents within, but the user or community manager will also have the ability to modify what is being shown. From with a preferences page, the user or community manager can change what top-level folders are shown within the folder structure as well as what properties are available for each document that is shown. There are also a number of other portlet specific customizations available as well. Embedded Tagging Engine As some of you might be aware, there was a product made available just prior to the Oracle acquisition known as Pathways which gave users the ability to add tags to documents that were either in the Knowledge Directory or in the Collaboration Documents section. Although this product is no longer available separately for customers to purchase, we definitely did feel that the functionality was important and interesting enough that other customers should have access to it. The decision was made for this release to embed the original Pathways product as the Tagging Engine for WCI and Collaboration. This tagging engine will allow a user to add tags to a document as well as through the Collaboration Documents section. Once the tags are added to the Tagging Engine and associated with documents, then a user will have the ability to filter the documents when processing a search according to the Tags Cloud that will now be available on the Search Results page and this will be true no matter what kind of search is being processed. In addition to all of that, all of the Pathways portlets will also be available for users to add to their My Page.

  • Complex Release Vehicle Management

    I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

    I asked this question an year ago in StackOverflow and never got a good answer. Since Programmers seems to be a better place to ask it, I'll give it a try... What is the better way to work with release management? More specifically what would be the best way to release packages? For example, assuming that you have a relatively stable system, a good quality assurance process (QA), etc. How do you prefer to release new versions? Let's assume that we are talking about a mid to large "centralized" web system (no clients), in-house development. This system can be considered "vital" for a corporate operations. I have a tendency to prefer to do this by releasing packets at regular intervals, not greater than 1 to 3 months. During this period, I will include into the package,fixes and improvements and make the implementation in production environment only once. But I've seen some people who prefer to place small changes in production, but with a greater frequency. The claim of these people is that by doing so, it is easier to identify bugs that have gone through the process of QA: in a package with 10 changes and another with only 1, it is much easier to know what caused the problem in the package with just one change... What is the opinion came from you?

  • Are the Ubuntu ISO images updated From release .ubuntu.com

    Just got idea from this(may not be related though) question however. Are the ISO images from the official site updated with updates in Core Ubuntu system , like Kernel Updates , desktop Environment Updates(unity), i mean Updates of BASE system including X-org, Office suite, Package Manager , Update manager or Gnome Base Modules, those released in update Branches like precise-Updates branch. The reason i am asking this is , if i download the ISO image of Ubuntu 12.04 Say after two or three months from release , i have to do an update of approximately 200~300 MB's size. So why are these ISO images not updated to recent updates, i am aware that all of the components are not updated at the same time , but let's say after One month from actual release ( Both LTS and normal releases), the updated components can be added to form a Updated ISO in regular intervals, which provides new users to use latest versions and features with improved stability and less bandwidth Consumption. I am not mentioning the idea of comparison to Rolling Release , or External PPA's added updates , and neither Netinstal but the ISO of updated Packages .This can be provided as optional download. Since my question is within the boundary of Official updates releases so stability could not be the reason. I guess there are custom packagers out there , but having an official option would be better. It helps in distributing Newest ISO OS which impresses a lot new users , since it makes availability of newer features and a faster system ofcourse. Another reason of asking this is here. Edit: Since almost all new (Desktop) users download the Default ISO's having one or few issue , which may have been corrected in following updates. But most of new laptop users i encountered gave up because of it , so should i suggest ,for laptop not listed on Certified H/W list , to try daily Builds , if needed.

    My update manager told me that it has not checked for updates in the past 18 days, so I clicked the "check" button. It works just fine until a certain point where it says "Downloading release". The loading bar moves across the screen for a while on that message, then it just stops and says to check my Internet connection. I am fairly certain that my Internet is fine, as I can do anything else that I have tried, including installing software over the Internet. I clicked on "Details" and this is what turned up: Log

    Users need a Java client to run the Forms-based content in Oracle E-Business Suite.  With Oracle JInitiator 1.3 out of Premier Support as of July 2009, Apps users must run the native Sun Java Runtime Engine (JRE) to access this content.In early 2008 we relaxed our certification and support policy for the use of the native Sun JRE clients with the E-Business Suite. The policy reflected a switch from certifying specific JRE versions for the E-Business Suite to specifying minimum versions, instead. This permits E-Business Suite users to run any JRE release above following minimum certified levels, even later ones that Oracle hasn't explicitly tested with the E-Business Suite: JRE 1.5.0_13 and higherJRE 1.6.0_03 and higherUnder our current policy, Oracle E-Business Suite end-users can upgrade their JRE clients whenever Sun releases a new JRE release on either the 1.5 or 1.6 versions.   • What is your strategy for converting RC builds into retail?

    We're trying to implement a strategy for how we transition our builds from RC to released retail code. When we label a build as a release candidate, we send it to QA for regression. If they approve it, that RC then becomes our released retail code. I liked the idea of "obvious" labeling of versions so that a user knows whether they have a beta or an RC or retail code... where you would have some obvious watermark in non-retail code (think Windows 7 where the RC or non-genuine builds watermark in the bottom right). ... but it seemed strange to us to manipulate the project (to remove the watermark) once it passed regression. If QA certified version a.b.c.d then our retail code should be that same version, not a.b.c.d+1 what strategies have you employed to clearly label non-release software versions without incrementing your build to disable the watermarks in your retail code? One idea I've considered is writing your build to look for a signed file in the installer archive... non-release code wouldn't include this file and so the app would know to display a watermark. But even this seems like QA is then working with non-release code. Ideas?

    Researching distributed source control management (specifically mercurial). My question is more or less what is the best practice for rejecting entire sets of code that fail testing? Example: A team is working on a hello world program. They have testers and a scheduled release coming up with specific features planned. Upcoming Release: Add feature A Add feature B Add feature C So, the developers make their clones for their features, do the work and merge them into a QA repo for the testers to scrutinize. Let's say the testers report back that "Feature B is incomplete and in fact dangerous", and they would like to retest A and C. End example. What's the best way to do all this so that feature B can easily be removed and you end up with a new repo that contains only feature A and C merged together? Recreate the test repo? Back out B? Other magic?

    Fake Scenario There is a software that was released 1 year ago. The software is to map and register all kind of animals on our planet. When the software was released, the client only needed to know the scientific name of the animal, a flag if it is in risk of extinction and a scale of dangerous(that is a fake software and specification, I don't want to discuss this here). There are already 100.000 animals records saved on DB. New Feature One year later, the client wants a new feature. It is really important to him to know the animals classes, and this is a required field. So he asks me to put a field to input the animal class, and this field is required. Or maybe where this animal was discovered. Problem I have already 100.000 recorded animals without a class or where it was discovered, but I need to insert a new column to storage this information and this column can't be null. I don't have a default value for this situation (there isn't a default animal class or where it was discovered). I don't want to keep the requirement rule only on my software, my DB must have this requirement too(I like to keep business rules on DB too). What are the alternatives to solve this situation? I am on a situation that this new feature cannot be previewed or reviewed for the existing records. The time already passed and I can't go back on time to get it

Most of the time these slow down the pace of "frequent releases" Currently we have a proprietary tool based workflow. The team who needs a code promotion needs to create a promotion request to one of the final UAT servers. Once this is complete, and once tests are done, certain customers, technical/non-technical managers need to approve, then it goes in to production deploy stage.     I currently use the following preprocessor defines, and various optimization settings: WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN VC_EXTRALEAN NOMINMAX _CRT_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS _SCL_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS _SECURE_SCL=0 _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING=0 My question is what other things do fellow SOers use, add, define, in order to get a Release Mode build from VS C++ (2008,2010) to be as performant as possible? btw, I've tried PGO etc, it does help a bit but nothing that comes to parity, also I'm not using streams, the C++ i'm talking about its more like C but making use of templates and STL algorithms. As it stands now very simple code segments flop when compared to what GCC produces on say an equivalent x86 machine running linux (2.6+ kernel) using 02. Side-Note: I believe a lot of the issues relate directly to the STL version (Dinkum) provided by MS. Could people please elaborate on experiences using STLPort etc with VS C++.

root's .profile and .shrc, tmux works perfectly. Occasionally (twice out of the 50 or so times I've tested it), the splitting will work fine once in a session. (This happened for example when I ran ktrace on tmux, which I can also post) To explain the 'suddenly' part of the title: when I started my newly updated mysql56-server, tmux immediately exited and lost the session. Recently I changed architectures, from FreeBSD 10.0 i386 to amd64, and I am still working through shared library incompatibilities. I suspect that this could be involved, but I can't imagine how an incompatibility of this sort could result in such a specific, isolated failure.

    The Wikipedia article on Parrot VM includes this unreferenced claim: Core committers take turns producing releases in a revolving schedule, where no single committer is responsible for multiple releases in a row. This practice has improved the project's velocity and stability. Parrot's Release Manager role documentation doesn't offer any further insight into the process, and I couldn't find any reference for the claim. My first thoughts were that rotating release managers seems like a good idea, sharing the responsibility between as many people as possible, and having a certain degree of polyphony in releases. Is it, though? Rotating release managers has been proposed for Launchpad, and there were some interesting counterarguments: Release management is something that requires a good understanding of all parts of the code and the authority to make calls under pressure if issues come up during the release itself The less change we can have to the release process the better from an operational perspective Don't really want an engineer to have to learn all this stuff on the job as well as have other things to take care of (regular development responsibilities) Any change of timezones of the releases would need to be approved with the SAs and: I think this would be a great idea (mainly because of my lust for power), but I also think that there should be some way making sure that a release manager doesn't get overwhelmed if something disastrous happens during release week, maybe by have a deputy release manager at the same time (maybe just falling back to Francis or Kiko would be sufficient). The practice doesn't appear to be very common, and the counterarguments seem reasonalbe and convincing. I'm quite confused on how it would improve a project's velocity and stability, is there something I'm missing, or is this just a bad edit on the Wikipedia article? Worth noting that the top voted answer in the related "Is rotating the lead developer a good or bad idea?" question boldly notes: Don't rotate.
