• Slow file operations, possible I/O error but chkdsk says OK

  I've recently faced a strange problem. I use Directory Opus file manager that suddenly started to report an I/O error when trying to copy files onto one of my disks. The Windows Explorer did copy those files but it was extremely slow. I run chkdsk on this drive (ca. 300GB) and it took it over two days to complete! However it reported no errors found. I run Hard Disk Sentinel that says the drive is OK. But the files still read and write extremely slow! Can anyone advise me what to do? I have a spare space I am copying my files for backup now but should I get rid of this disk? Or can I try to "heal" it somehow? Many thanks for your ideas!

• Internet connectivity issues with one router but work ok with other router

  I have one Tplink ADSL ROUTER and when i enter username and password on setup page then everything works fine. Now i have one more router Netgear router then when i enter same username and password then interworks ok for some 50% websites but for other 50% websites the page is not loaded and it hangs there. In the sats bar it says website found , waiting for reply and it hnags there and no site is displayed. I wonder which setting is different on these two routers. The Tplink router i have bought is from local shop but netgear router is from different country. Can that make some difference

• dd clone hard drive: Input/Output Error though "chkdsk" says OK

  Hi, I've used dd to clone hard drives before using 'dd' and a live cd, but have run into a problem. The issue: dd fails with an "Input/Output Error" on /dev/sda3 , even though windows "check disk" (chkdsk) says it's ok. Context: Trying to replace my laptop hard drive w/ a faster one of the same size Laptop has NTFS on a 320gb hard drive Booting into knoppix Knoppix recognizes 'original' drive (/dev/sda) I am using a usb connection for ‘new' drive (irrelevant, but just an fyi) Knoppix recognizes the usb drive as /dev/sdb Using dd, as follows: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb "dd" gives the I/O error above at 82Gb (out of 320Gb) I then tried checking each partition as follows and found it failed on /dev/sda3: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/null I have ran windows xp chkdsk on the offending drive in both "find only" and "find and fix" mode and it reports no errors Question How can I find and fix the error on my original hard drive partition (i.e. /dev/sda3) so that dd reads it successfully?

For performance based concerns i want this request to be handled at apache level. with all the research i was still unable to get this to run; RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} OPTIONS RewriteRule .* - [R=200m] can somebody assist me with what rewrite rule should be there? or is there an alternative to RewriteEngine? • USB Wifi will not connect on Windows 7 (Even though the driver installs OK)

  Windows 7 will not connect to a WiFi Netowrk using a USB Network Adapter. I have 3 adapters, A Senoa SUB 364 (EXT), a Repeatit SU2410 USB V2 and a ZYXEL G202. All of these devices install OK on Windows 7 Home Premium on my Destop PC (64 bit) and on my Asus Wii Netbook (32 bit). In each case the adapter can be enabled/disabled and the driver properties says it is working correctly. When I try and connect to a network Windows 7 behaves as though the adapter does not exist and reports no networks. The Wii has an integrated adapter which works perfectly under Windows and connects to either of the 3 networks available to me. I have done all the checks I can on the configuration. What seems odd to me is that it happens to all 3 devices on 2 different windows 7 PCs both of which are working perfectly in any other respect. This suggests the common denominator is me and I must be doing something wrong.. what's also strange is that I cannot find any similar problems being reported on any of the forums. From what reading I've been able to do it seems like the new wifi virtualisation thingy in W7 is not recognising the adapters which suggests I', missing a configuration option somewhere. Looking forward to finding out if I'm not alone or just being stupid. Pete

• Print jobs sent to server OK, but then get deleted

  I have 2 HP computers, one running Win XP SP3, one running Win7. I have a Lexmark X4270 All-in-One printer attached to the Win7 machine via a USB port. I can print OK from the Win 7 machine, but when I print from the WinXP machine, the print job shows up in both print queues (showing the same number of bytes - which is good!), but then the status gets changed to "Deleting - Sent to printer", and that status shows up in both print queues. The print job then stays there until I do a cancel, followed by a system restart. FWIW the owner is shown as Guest, but I have permission for Everyone set to print... I believe I have up-to-date drivers; I don't believe it's a firewall problem. What I would like to see is the Win7 machine's reason for deleting my print jobs - is there a diagnostic tool available? Also, I notice that the port for this printer on the WinXP machine is set to USB001 - I would have thought something like \servername\sharedprinter would be more appropriate - and I can see that in the list of ports, but the system doesn't let me change the port name from USB001... Could someone shed some light? I have spent hours on this! TIA BTW I can do file sharing, no problem!

• C# Windows Forms Print Dialog box click OK twice to respond

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008, .net Framework 3.5 for a Windows forms client-server app that I'm working on. There is a weird bug when I run the program and try to print. The print dialog box opens, but I have to click the OK button twice for it to work. After the second click it works fine, no errors. When I put a breakpoint on: if (result == DialogResult.OK) , the breakpoint doesn't trigger until the second click. • ffmpeg: video file played OK on Ubuntu, but no sound on XP

  I created a video clip using ffmpeg (vcodec: mpeg2video, acodec: AC3 5.1). The file can be played normally on Ubuntu, but when I play it on an XP machine, there is no sound. I can play AC3 files and other movies with AC3 sound. I already tried many codec packs and many players. When I compare the MediaInfo tab of the Properties window of the file with another playable movie, I see that the Audio Identifier of the audio stream in my file is 0x80 while it is 0x02 in the other movie. So I guess that's why players on XP can't recognize the audio codec. When I use an MKV container instead of MPEG (still mpeg2video codec), then the result is OK on both Ubuntu and XP (with the correct Audio ID). I really need MPEG though. Any idea? • very slow internet with Linksys WRT54GL only in wireless mode (wired is OK)

  I bought a new Cisco Linksys WRT54GL router to connect my laptop (running Windows 7) to the internet. I installed Tomato 1.28 firmware on the router. When I connect the laptop to the router via ethernet cable, everything is fine and I get extremely fast up- and download speeds. When I connect wirelesssly however, websites load extremely slow - it takes dozens of seconds to load a website! <-- This is my question, how can I fix the wireless speed issue? Gmail for example is unusable this way. I tried speedtest.net, but this always fails in the upload part of the test so I can't even test the bandwidth (could the fact that it fails in the upload part, not the download part, be an indication what the problem is?!). I have isolated the problem a bit, I am convinced it has to do either with the router itself, the router settings, or the settings of the wireless connection in Win 7. Because previously, I was using another router by Buffalo and I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried to reproduce the settings from the Bufallo router as closely as possible on the Linksys router (same channel, same encryption etc). The download speed problem only occurs with the Linksys router, and only in wireless mode! When I exchange the Linksys router with the Buffalo router I have here for testing, the wireless speed is up to normal again. Also, before I had installed the Tomato firmware I had exactly the same problem, so it has nothing to do with the firmware itself. Notes & things I already tried: Changing the channel: does not seem to affect anything, I am also on the same channel (10) which I was previously on when I had a Buffalo router. QoS is off. Ping to the router itself is OK, ~ 1 ms. • AJAX, Subdomains and the 200 OK response.

  A non-hypothetical but abstracted situation: I have a domain www.foo.com, from which I'm making an AJAX POST to beta.foo.com. Examining the XHR object, I see a response header of 200 OK, but no response text - I even get a response 12B long, which is the exact response (a 12-character string) that I'm expecting - but the response text is blank. If this is a cross-domain issue, why am I getting 200 OK, and better yet - why am I seeing the PHP functions fire on the beta.foo.com side - yet getting no response?

• Kde no sound from Phonon or most KDE apps but mplayer,skype and firefox are ok

  Can somebody tell me why I cannot get any sound with most of KDE 4? I'm running a Gentoo box, I'm in both the 'audio' and 'video' groups. I can get sound with mplayer ( but not smplayer ) Firefox and Skype but nothing else. I can't get the test sound to play from the settings window, but Phonon is not whining about broken sound cards when I start up. I have checked with kmix, we seem to be completely unmuted ( and I can get sound with some apps)

• Windows with putty via USB serial cable to Linux serial port - output ok, input isn't

  I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5). I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0 in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control. I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but cat < /dev/ttyS0 just prints out weird characters from what I type. Any and all suggestions will be welcome. Thanks!

  I am trying to find the bottleneck of a server running a fairly busy php/mysql site. • GIMP: change the exact color on the image - OK, but transparency disappears

  There is no problem for me now to change color for pixels of the same color: I click on "Select by Color Tool"(Ctrl+O). The pixels of the same color are selected now. Then I press Ctrl+,. The selected pixels are white now (the white color is taken from a foreground color). The problem is the transparency. The green color I want to change to the white one has transparency. Once I use my method, the transparency disappears so all my-green-color with any transparency becomes white and without transparency. How do I keep the transparency by using my method? My picture is in .png format.

• Amazon EC2 instance was not available for few minutes (amazon showed that everything ok)

  Few minutes ago my amazon Ec2 instance was unavailable for a few minutes. During this time neither I was able to connect to web-site with http, nor I was able to ssh to it. Also I was not able to connect to my amazon management console for some time (less than amount of unavailability of my instance). When I was able to connect to management console, it was showing me that everything is running smoothly (but I still was not able to connect to instance in any way for a minute or two). During this time I have checked their status page just to see that there is no issues (my instance is in Ireland and there is nothing wrong there today). After that I was able to log in. I checked my logins with last to see that no one except me was logging in. I also looked in apache logs and there was no errors or warnings during this time. Right now when I see my amazon monitor, I see a small spike in CPU in last 15 minutes (but this is from 10% to like 20%) I have no idea what can it be (I have never experienced anything like this before) and therefore I have no idea how scared should I be or what else should I look for. Can anyone give me a hint what my actions should be in such situation?

• How to check that image sizes are ok or not

  I am having many image files in one folder. Mostly there are jpg, but some png, bmp, gif, tif also (but jpg is most important if others are not possible). There are also many xml files in same folder with same names as image files are having. So there is something like this: 1.jpg, 1.xml, a.png, a.xml, 3g.bmp, 3g.xml... All xml files are having only 1 line: <IMGRES WIDTH="1234" HEIGHT="567" /> (of course numbers are not same). I am looking for some easy way to check all image sizes and confirm if they are same as in xml or not. So I want output like: imagename, xmlwidth x xmlheight, realwidth x realheight, match/error Is this possible in only Windows with no other software installed?

• RAM ok in memtest86+ == RAM ok after wake from sleep?

  I have a Windows XP (32-bit) system that appears stable in normal operation, but was repeatably freezing (hard lock, no BSOD) a minute or so after waking from S3 sleep. Some Googling against the motherboard model and memory manufacturer suggested that I might need to bump up the memory voltage, so I tried it and it now seems to resume without freezing. However, I don't really trust it and I'd like to validate that it's actually stable, especially after resuming from sleep. I've run Prime95 for a few hours with no issues, and am planning an overnight run of Memtest86+, which I expect to pass because the system has been solid whenever I've run it without putting it to sleep. Does something like Memtest86+ exist that actually invokes S3 sleep during operation? Clearly it would need an operator to wake the computer to resume testing, but I don't think I've ever heard of a memory test tool that can do this. Alternately, am I wasting my time? Should a clean bill of health from Memtest86+ indicate stability regardless of whether sleep is involved, or, conversely, does my original problem indicate that Memtest86+ would have failed eventually with the stock voltage if I'd run it, sleep or not?

• Webmin apache on CentOS 6.3 results in 403 forbidden, permissions are OK

  First of all, I will mention that the permissions are fine for the document root directory, which is /webapps/nimbus/www/public_html The www directory contains a PHP application. PHP is a problem for later if it doesn't work, as I've tested it with a plain html file (does not work either) I just get 403 forbidden responses. The permissions are 755 on webapps and all subdirectories. I've checked other questions here and on the internet, but it was all about those permissions. Whatever info you still need, just ask, I don't know what's relevant as it's the first time ever I'm using webmin or configuring apache.

• reg delete gives me "access is denied" but regedit delete is ok

  I need to delete a key from a command line. So I wanted to use reg delete "the key to be deleted" /f but I get ERROR: access is denied. From the same login session (the same user) I am able to delete the key without any troubles from regedit.exe that is not run as administrator. I cannot use runas command to execute reg that I believe would be to solution because in fact I want to use reg to delete registry entry for administrator profile so runas works again. • Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

• Internet connection problem,ping ok , but outlook and browsers dont work

  Hi, From some days ago I have a big problem on my laptop( run windows xp sp3) When I connect to internet I can ping web sites but when try to browse them some times it work correctly and some times the connection to server intrupted and I have to refresh the page several times. in this case browser show a connection problem immediatly after I click on address bar or a link on page( wihtout any try to connect to server) I use FireFox and opera and both of them have this problem. try another ISP and still I have this problem. I didnt use any proxy server and check the proxy setting. In this case Outlook also can't connect to mail server. this problem anfter some time or after restart windows have been fixed for a while. I check for virus and can't find anything. Is there any idea how can I fix it? UPDATE: Thanks for your responses. I test them , also I use Open DNS setting and that dosent help me. last night I see that my local web application ( such as Adsl modem config web site , and sites that I set up on windows xo IIS ) aslo can't open and Internal Communication error apears ( Opera Message) that didnt relate to DNS settings or Internet connection.

• How to check if redis master is OK?

  On the documentation, they advice the monitor command. But it has a 50% performance penalty for the whole system, and how should I do that ? Whatching the ouput using SSH until I don't see anything ? Let's say I have 3 servers: 1 with a redis master, 1 with a redis slave, and one with my website querying the redis master. How can I, from my website server, make cleany the decision to fallback to the slave by sending the SLAVEOF NO ONE command ? My first step would be to put some kind of timeout check with a simple ping, just to be sure the server is online. But for redis specifically, I have no clue.
