  • 8 Ways to Tweak and Configure Sudo on Ubuntu

    - by Chris Hoffman
Like most things on Linux, the sudo command is very configurable. You can have sudo run specific commands without asking for a password, restrict specific users to only approved commands, log commands run with sudo, and more. The sudo command’s behavior is controlled by the /etc/sudoers file on your system. This command must be edited with the visudo command, which performs syntax-checking to ensure you don’t accidentally break the file. HTG Explains: What Is Windows RT and What Does It Mean To Me? • Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a windows server 2008 running multiple sites

    - by batman_man
Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

  • Understanding the Linux Root

    - by Zac
I've been using Linux (Ubuntu) for about 2 weeks now and am still struggling with some basic concept surrounding the root user: (1) Some terminal operations (such as making subdirectories inside a FHS directory such as /opt) require me to prefix the command with sudo - why? I guess what I'm choking on is: if I'm already logged in as a valid system user, why do I have to be a superuser/root in order to modify things that the sysadmin has already deemed me worthy of accessing? (2) Is there a GUI (Gnome, KDE) equivalent to sudo? Is there a way to assume a superuser role through a graphical context, rather than from inside a new shell? (3) I can't access the /root directory logged in as myself... but I installed the system to begin with and was never asked to create a root account! How do I log in as root and gain access to /root?!? Thanks for all feedback & input!

  • Obsessive behaviors in sysadmins

    - by squillman
I have been told by colleagues (mainly non-technical) that some of my admin behaviors border on / cross the line between normal and obsessive, which sometimes leads me to wonder how screwed up I really am (read "how screwed up everyone else really is"). What are your obsessive behaviors when it comes to your sysadmin tasks and job functions? What do you do religiously that would make you twitch if you didn't do it or that others just roll their eyes at? I have reasons for my actions. I want to prove to my coworkers that I'm not alone.

  • Upgrading Fedora to Current Version - Dependent Applications Concerns

    - by nicorellius
Is it possible to upgrade to Fedora 11 and still keep the server functional (it's running Fedora Core release 6 now, with MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1 and Apache 2.2)? I have a Customer Relationship Management system on there and it is required on a daily basis. I am trying to figure out if I should upgrade (and whether that will cause huge problems) or if I should start over with a new OS (like Ubuntu) and install the CRM fresh, with updated version of MySQL, PHP, Apache, etc. I ask because I am not really the sysadmin, but have but put in charge of this server.

  • Permissions for Multiple User VPS

    - by adnymarc
I have a Linode VPS server that I have recently setup and am migrating to from Mediatemple, where I have a VPS managed by Plesk. I dislike the Plesk interface and the mess it makes of a lot of things, but appreciated its ability to allow multiple people access to different domains on a server. I have most everything setup the way I would like it, but am having issues with permissions for my domain directories. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Apache 2 as my web server. I have domains successfully located in /var/www/vhosts/domainname.com but have to modify files as root in order to add/change files for the domains. I would like to setup access with the following criteria: Each domain can have a user assigned to it (and allow for the same user to manage multiple domains - could even create symlinks in their home folder to their domains) Certain users will have shell access and may be chrooted to the domain directory they control FTP needs to be setup and able to correctly access the domains so that content editors for each domain can upload/download without permissions issues I am relatively new to linux sysadmin and have searched for a good guide to help solve these issues but haven't been able to find one yet. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • What's an easy way to install a bunch of OSS apps in my home dir on my company's aging Redhat VNC servers?

    - by subopt
My company's IT group doesn't want to install lots of common stuff on our VNC servers, which run RHEL 4. The list of stuff i want/need includes graphviz, midnight commander, various python libs, sqlite, netbeans, antlr, jdk1.6, etc. They've hobbled rpm somehow, so i can't do rpm --relocate. And i don't want the RHEL4 compatible revs of this stuff anyway. I've probably got the room to build all this stuff in my home dir, but i don't want to take forever tracking down dependencies. Looking for an easy way to get the apps/tools i need, and nothing (or very little) else. Any suggestions?

  • Have I bricked my Sun V20z?

    - by David Mackintosh
I have a small pile of Sun V20z computers. I was trying to update the SP and BIOS firmwares in order to bring them all up to the same standard -- mostly to get the updated (ie actually useful) SP functionality, and figured that I would just do the BIOS while I was at it. For three of the four computers, it worked perfectly. However after the BIOS update, the fourth system won't boot. I did this: batch05-mgmt $ sp get mounts Local Remote /mnt 10.16.0.8:/export/v20z batch05-mgmt $ platform set os state update-bios /mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.35.3.2/bios.sp This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. Bios started Bios Flash Transmit Started Bios Flash Transmit Complete Bios Flash update Progress: 7 Bios Flash update Progress: 6 Bios Flash update Progress: 5 Bios Flash update Progress: 4 Bios Flash update Progress: 3 Bios Flash update Progress: 2 Bios Flash update Progress: 1 Bios Flash update complete batch05-mgmt $ platform set power state on This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. After an hour of waiting, it still won't start. The chassis powers on, but beyond the fans spinning up and the hardware POST of the drives, nothing appears to happen. So if I try to re-flash the BIOS (on the theory that maybe something went wrong): batch05-mgmt $ platform set os state update-bios /mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.35.3.2/bios.sp This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. Bios started Error. The operation timed out. Have I bricked it?

  • Content server backups

    - by Dan Sosedoff
What is the best way to backup data on content servers? For example, I have 15 servers that just have content, no applications running on it. Each server has a 250 GB hard drive. So, it's a pretty big amount of data. All the data have external access (via HTTP). So, the question is: what methodology is best in my case? The most useful method I know is cross-backup: when each server contains its own data and backup of one other server. But, there is significant reduction in total capacity. RAID?

  • Tool to copy IMAP folders from one server to another

    - by Barry Brown
I need a Unix-based tool, such as a shell script or command-line program, to copy IMAP folders from one server to another. Ideally, the tool should copy all the folders for a single account (Inbox, Sent, Trash, and user-created folders) at once, rather than one folder at a time. It should preserve message dates. As an option, I'd like to be able to copy just a single IMAP folder. Alternatively, is there a tool to copy an mbox file to an IMAP server? I have direct access to the mbox files in the filesystem, but not to the filesystem of the remote IMAP server. Edit: Is there a way for a user to migrate their own questions to Server Fault?

  • What's the best way of handling permissions for apache2's user www-data in /var/www ?

    - by gyaresu
Has anyone got a nice solution for handling files in /var/www/ ? We're running Name Based Virtual Hosts and the apache2 user is 'www-data' We've got two regular users & root. So when messing with files in /var/www ,rather than having to... chown -R www-data:www-data ...all the time, what's a good way of handling this? Supplementary question. How hardcore do you then go on permissions? This one has always been a problem in collaborative development environments. Cheers.

  • Secure method of changing a user's password via Python script/non-interactively

    - by Matthew Rankin
I've created a Python script using Fabric to configure a freshly built Slicehost Ubuntu slice. In case you're not familiar with Fabric, it uses Paramiko, a Python SSH2 client, to provide remote access "for application deployment or systems administration tasks." One of the first things I have the Fabric script do is to create a new admin user and set their password. Unlike Pexpect, Fabric cannot handle interactive commands on the remote system, so I need to set the user's password non-interactively. At present, I'm using the chpasswd command to change the password. This transmits the password as clear text over SSH to the remote system. Questions Is my current method of setting the password a security concern? Currently, the drawback I see is that Fabric shows the password as clear text on my local system as follows: [xxx.xx.xx.xxx] run: echo "johnsmith:supersecretpassw0rd" | chpasswd. Since I only run the Fabric script from my laptop, I don't think this is a security issue, but I'm interested in others' input. Is there a better method for setting the user's password non-interactively? Another option, would be to use Pexpect from within the Fabric script to set the password. Current Code # Fabric imports and host configuration excluded for brevity root_password = getpass.getpass("Root's password given by SliceManager: ") admin_username = prompt("Enter a username for the admin user to create: ") admin_password = getpass.getpass("Enter a password for the admin user: ") env.user = 'root' env.password = root_password # Create the admin group and add it to the sudoers file admin_group = 'admin' run('addgroup {group}'.format(group=admin_group)) run('echo "%{group} ALL=(ALL) ALL" >> /etc/sudoers'.format( group=admin_group) ) # Create the new admin user (default group=username); add to admin group run('adduser {username} --disabled-password --gecos ""'.format( username=admin_username) ) run('adduser {username} {group}'.format( username=admin_username, group=admin_group) ) # Set the password for the new admin user run('echo "{username}:{password}" | chpasswd'.format( username=admin_username, password=admin_password) ) Local System Terminal I/O $ fab config_rebuilt_slice Root's password given by SliceManager: Enter a username for the admin user to create: johnsmith Enter a password for the admin user: [xxx.xx.xx.xxx] run: addgroup admin [xxx.xx.xx.xxx] out: Adding group `admin' (GID 1000) ... • Stripping a spike from rrdtool when removespike.pl doesn't find any

    - by raccettura
I know when rrdtool graphs (using rrdtool 1.4) network traffic and the host is restarted a spike is a pretty normal thing to see. In the past I've just run that removespike.pl script that is hosted by the author and it strips the spike and I'm good to go. The last few times I've rebooted removespike.pl finds no spikes, but it's obvious that there are spikes. So my question is, how can I easily remove these spikes and get my graphs usable again? Right now it's so skewed it's meaningless.
