• Help in recovering partition

  Okay so i had one NTFS partition and i wanted to resize it, but while resizing it with partition magic some error occurred and now i am not able to enter in my partition anymore. I have slackware 13 also and i tried mounting the partition from there but it didn't succeed. One friend of mine came to my house with some live-cd os called backtrack3 and when he booted from cd, he was able to mount the damaged partition - and was able to read/write on it anywhere. I saw my files, they are all there, so nothing's erased just the partition is somehow damaged. But strange thing was that from backtrack we weren't able to mount some of the working partitions of my comp, and we could mount the damaged one. So i am asking for some help here: My files are all there, and i saw them from backtrack. What can i do to fix the partition so it would be usable from windows/slackware again ? Please tell me anything you've got because i have some important data on it. Thank you.

My goal is to 1-Buy a new hard drive (checked) 2-Copy the recovery partition to a drive ( dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=~/recovery.bak ) 3-Make a new partition of 12000 mb with Windows 7 4-Copy back recovery partition to the new drive ( dd if=~/recovery.bak of=/dev/sdb1 ) Then press F11 when the laptop boots however it does NOT work. • XP: cannot assign a letter to a FAT32 partition

• solve a partition misalignment?

  I have a new Dell XPS laptop which had Windows 7 installed in it. It also had a default extra partition for "Dell Utility". I installed Ubuntu in it on an Extended Partition along with windows and specified the logical partitions myself (for /,/home and swap). Now when I open Disk Utility , it shows this "Partition misaligned by 512 bytes" error for the Dell Utility partition and "Partition misaligned by 1024 bytes" for the entire Extended partition where Ubuntu is installed. Deleting the extended partition and re-installing Ubuntu may solve the problem of misalignment in the extended partition. But how about the Dell Utility partition? If I re-install Windows 7 Dell Utility wouldn't be a part of the re-install. So that may not solve it either. How do I fix this? Note: The extended partition I made contains an NTFS logical partition for holding data accessible by both OSes(basically a personal data partition). EDIT: I deleted all my Ubuntu partitions and re-installed Ubuntu like before,this time making them partitions with GParted via LiveCD. Now the only problem is that there is a misalignment in the Dell Utility partition. The other misalignment got fixed. Now how do I get rid of that issue?

  Hi, I have installed an Ubuntu machine with two encrypted LUKS partitions: one for / and one for /home. I've reinstalled the machine to upgrade to 10.04. Again, the / is installed using LUKS, and I'm able to mount the /home using: mkdir /media/home sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda2 home sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/mapper/home /media/home The problem is, this cryptfs mapper disappears after boot, so I putting the appropriate line in fstab fails. How do I set the cryptfs to prompt for password and unlock the drive at boot? Thanks, Adam

  I setup my partition scheme to have an extra partition the size of my / partion. I have a separate home directory partition. Essentially, I will be doing things that might make my OS unstable so I'd like to backup the OS state but without bothering my home directory. Can I just backup (maybe with dd?) my root partition to another partition on the HDD? I know to restore it I would have to boot up with a livecd or something and do the reverse procedure. I want this to be as simple and require the least amount of external hardware as possible.

  I have a new Alienware M17x running Vista x64. I just found out that it came with a misterious "EISA Configuration" partition. On Disk Management, my Disk 0 tells me that my HD has about 300 GB. The EISA partition has 12 GB. That's big enough to know why is it there. So, this is more of a bundle question. What is this "EISA Configuration" partition? Is it safe to remove it somehow? If so, how can I delete it? I mean join it with the primary partition, or set it as a secondary small partition.

• Fix NTFS partition

  Okay, so i was about to resize one of my NTFS partitions but suddenly the partition tool showed me an error and it crashed, so i was no longer able to use my partition - even when i tried mounting it under linux it showed me error. I installed active partition recovery, and using it i can see all my files on that partition - it's all there, nothing's been removed. I just need somehow to fix the partition so it can be usable again. Can you tell me how, or using with which tool/software ? Thank you.

• Merely chainloading an Acer Recovery Partition deleted all data

  I was starting a backup of Acer's factory restore partition located inside of an extended partition to determine whether or not it still worked. I clicked "take no action" once I saw that it had, in fact, successfully started up. However, when I rebooted, I got an "error: no such partition" and was dropped to a GRUB recovery prompt. Upon further investigation, I discovered that all partitions inside the extended partition were gone except for the recovery partition! What happened? How can I fix this? testdisk doesn't find the deleted partitions!

  I have a brand new Acer aspire 5811 with core i5 processor and all that. There is windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed on it. I want to install arch and setup a dual boot system. The problem is: Windows shows 4 partitions 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 But GpartedLive cd and also arch setup show 5 partitions 938Kb UNKOWN system reserved partition 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB unusable space Because of this, I cannot create another primary partition. Can any body guide me about how should I go for creating partition for installing arch ? Note: I need to keep windows 7 working. regards.

• Accidentally dd'ed an image to wrong drive / overwrote partition table + NTFS partition start

  I screwed up and set the wrong output for dd when trying to copy a freenas iso, overwriting the wrong external hard drive. Ironically, I was trying to setup a freenas server for data backup... External drive is only used for data storage, system is entirely intact Drive had a single NTFS partition filing the entire device (2TB WD elements) Drive originally had an MBR partition table. Drive now shows as having a GPT, presumably from the freenas image. Drive was mounted at the time, with maybe a couple kB of data written/read after running dd Drive is just a few months old and healthy (regular SMART / fs checks) I have not reboot the OS (crunchbang) /proc/partition still holds the correct information (and has been stored) Have dd's output (records in / out / bytes) testdrive did not find any partitions on quick or deep search running photorec to recover the more important data (a couple recent plaintext files that hadn't been backed up yet). Vast majority of disk content ( 80%) is unnecessary media files. My current plan is to let photorec do it's thing, then recreate the mbr with gparted and use cfdisk to create another NTFS partition using the sector information from /sys/block/.../. Is that a good course of action (that is, a chance of success)? Or anything else I should try first?   I have and asus r500v with 750 gb gpt system uefi motherboard core i7 3610qm, nvidia geforce gt, with ubuntu and w7 dual boot, I had problems installing ubuntu because of the grub but I fix it with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/807801, but I still have the problem of "warning: the partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes. this may result iin very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested" in every linux partitioin I made and my 750 gb is not being used at the maximun capacity it only uses 698 gb.   Hi, I pardon as its not a programming question at all. But if anybody can answer this it will be usefull for me. In MS word 2007 I drew a textbox and entered some text. Then I right clicked on textbox and went to format shape Then went to TextBox tab and reduced the top internal margin to 0.1 cm. But still it seems there is too much space at the top inside the textbox. I am not able to position the text exactly at the vertical middle of textbox. If I choose the auto-rezide option in format Shape, the textBox size is increases automatically but the text remains exactly at vertical and horizontal middle of textbox. but anyhow I need the textbox to be small. This is very minor but annoying problem. Can anybody help?

  Is there a way to clone an existing struct with different member alignment in Visual C++? Here is the background: I use an 3rd-party library, which uses several structs. To fill up the structs, I pass the address of the struct instances to some functions. Unfortunately, the functions only returns unaligned buffer, so that data of some members are always wrong. /Zp is out of choice, since it breaks the other parts of the program. I know #pragma pack modifies the alignment of the following struct, but I would like to avoid copying the structs into my code, for the definitions in the library might change in the future.
