  • How you remember by default functionality/class name etc of the platform

    Hello everyone, I am 8 months experienced guy, (B.tech in computer science) In my college time i used to create simple programs in c/c++/java. Simple programs like creating linked list/binary trees programs. frankly saying those college bullshit exercise.(I am from India so Engg colleges in india sucks except few like IIT's etc). In my college time apart from my college exercises i created some better programs/games like arachnoid, snake. We had 6 months internship in our college curriculum. I worked on asp.net. Basically the work was to create a website with some random functionality. After that in my job i worked on php and successfully deployed 4 projects. All having lot of functionality and i was the only team member in all the projects. Now i am learning ruby on rails as i switched to a new firm. I also have to work on android or iphone depending upon on what mobile technology i want to choose or i can work on both of the technologies. My project manager says take your time to learn things. we are not in hurry to place you in any project. Work on things by your self. take 3 4 months to learn. But i am not getting good pace. I am quite confident with php/asp etc but i dont able to grasp things in android. Although my c/c++ background is quite good, having a good logical mind. But i am not able to grasp the things in android. Even learning some basics of rails i found it wtf. Why i have make model name singular and table name plural.By default that action name and name of the file in view is same I just hate the word MAGIC mentioned more than 100 times in the book. (agile-web-development-with-rails) (I am talking about default functionality, I can over ride them that i know, so please dont debate on that) I not saying i am not getting the things. My point is remembering the default functionality is a pissing me off. Lots of classes. Lots of files . specify this thing here. That thing there. All these things (remember which class does what) require some time or i am missing something. For my point of view i am having all these problems cause previously i never used object oriented programming approach in php. (I NEVER USED, I AM NOT SAYING THET ARE NOT) How you people explain it. How you people suggest me to do. I am looking suggestions from some seniors.From seniors in my office.They says you good dude. But i dont know i am not geting confidence in the things. When they ask me anythings about the topics i cover. I give them good answers. So when i discuss this problem with them they says there is no problem just keep on working. And sorry for my poor english.

I can understand it depends upon on the project, whats the functionality present the project. Lets take a example of stackoverflow. Suppose we are developing a basic working model of this. What kind of functional test must be covered in this. Just brief what the key points while writing functional tests.     I am having a table in which there is a column in which various values are stored.i want to retrieve unique values from that table using dql. Doctrine_Query::create() ->select('rec.school') ->from('Records rec') ->where("rec.city='$city' ") ->execute(); Now i want only unique values. Can anybody tell me how to do that... Edit Table Structure: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `records` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `state` varchar(255) COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci DEFAULT NULL, `city` varchar(255) COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci DEFAULT NULL, `school` varchar(255) COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci AUTO_INCREMENT=16334 ; This is the Query I am using: Doctrine_Query::create() ->select('DISTINCT rec.city') ->from('Records rec') ->where("rec.state = '$state'") // ->getSql(); ->execute(); Generting Sql for this gives me: SELECT DISTINCT r.id AS r__id, r.city AS r__city FROM records r WHERE r.state = 'AR' Now check the sql generated:::: DISTINCT is on 'id' column where as i want Distinct on city column. Anybody know how to fix this. EDIT2 Id is unique cause its an auto incremental value.Ya i have some real duplicates in city column like: Delhi and Delhi. Right.. Now when i am trying to fetch data from it, I am getting Delhi two times. How can i make query like this: select DISTINCT rec.city where state="xyz"; Cause this will give me the proper output. EDIT3: Anybody who can tell me how to figure out this query..???

  • Will_paginate Plugin on two objects on same page

    Hello I am using will_paginte plugin on two objects on a same page. Like on stackoverflow. There is a profile page on which there is a pagination on two things QUestions and answers. I am having problem ie:-- when user is clicking on questions pagination page 2. answers page are also updating. The reason is both is sending a post variable ie params[:page] How to change this variable so that only one should be updated. and how to maintain that user should not lose the other page. ie he is on 3rd page of questions and 1st page of answers and now he click on 5th page of the questions the result should be 3rd page of questions and 5th page of answers.

    I have four models question, answer, comment and vote.Consider it same as stackoverflow. Question has_many comments Answers has_many comments Questions has_many votes answers has_many votes comments has_many votes Here are the models (only relevant things) class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :commentable, :polymorphic => true has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy end class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :comments, :as => :commentable, :dependent => :destroy has_many :answers, :dependent => :destroy has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy end class Vote < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :votable, :polymorphic => true end class Answer < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :question, :counter_cache => true has_many :comments, :as => :commentable , :dependent => :destroy end Now the problem is whenever i am trying to delete any question/answer/comment its giving me an error NoMethodError in QuestionsController#destroy undefined method `each' for 0:Fixnum if i remove this line from any of the model (question/answer/comment) has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy then it works perfectly. It seems there is a problem while deleting the records active record is not able to find out the proper path because of multiple joins within the tables.

    I am getting this error. No :secret given to the #protect_from_forgery call. Set that or use a session store capable of generating its own keys (Cookie Session Store). I deleted all the cookies, values from sessions table. Restarted my server.Still geting the same error and this code was working yesterday.

    Just taking a simple example. We have a question on stackoverflow and while posting a question we want to validate title_of_question, description_of_question that they should be present. Now we have a another model tag having habtm relationshio with question model. How to validate that while saving the question.     Hello How can use cache_counter in a habtm. For example a question has many tags and a tag can belong to many questions. question habtm tags Now i want to find out number of questions belonging to every tag. One way is counting everytime. But, in case of one_to_many i done same thing in this way. Like one question has many answers. then in answer model i specified belongs_to :question,:cache_counter=>true It solved my problem. So how to do the same in habtm.

    Hello i am new to rails. I am learning rails 2.3.5 and checked rails 3. I found some features added in rails 3. thats perfectly fine. But i found something different. in 2.3.5 we use ruby script/server to start the server and in rails 3 we use rails server and there are some other changes like this. Whats the improvement by doing this? whats the basic difference between this. Can anybody gimme a list of these changes and explanations for doing this?
