  • C++: A variation of priority queue

    I need some kind of priority queue to store pairs <key, value>. Values are unique, but keys aren't. I will be performing the following operations (most common first): random insertion; retrieving (and removing) all elements with the least key. random removal (by value); I can't use std::priority_queue because it only supports removing the head. For now, I'm using an unsorted std::list. Insertion is performed by just pushing new elements to the back (O(1)). Operation 2 sorts the list with std::sort (O(N*logN)), before performing the actual retrieval. Removal, however, is O(n), which is a bit expensive. Any idea of a better data structure?

    I was using a vector-based priority queue typedef std::priority_queue< Event, vector< Event >, std::greater< Event > > EventPQ; to manage my Event objects. Now my simulation has to be able to find and delete certain Event objects not at the top of the queue. I'd like to know if my planned work-around can do what I need it to, and if I have the syntax right. I'd also like to know if dramatically better solutions exist. Would it be dramatically easier to store the Events themselves in EventPQ instead? Does it make more sense to remove the time keys from Event objects and use them instead as keys in a multimap? Assuming the current implementation seems okay, my questions are: Do I need to specify how to sort on the pointers, rather than the objects, or does the multiset automatically know to sort on the objects pointed to? If I have a shared_ptr ptr1 to an Event that also has a pointer in the EventPQ container, how do I find and delete the corresponding pointer in EventPQ? Is it enough to .find( ptr1 ), or do I instead have to find by the key (time)? Is the Event::remove() sufficient for removing the pointer in the EventPQ container? There's a small chance multiple events could be created with the same time (obviously implied in the use of multiset). If the find() works on event times, to avoid accidentally deleting the wrong event, I was planning to throw in a further check on eventID and hostID. Does this seem reasonable? (Dumb syntax question) In Event.h, is the declaration of dummy class Event;, then the EventPQ typedef, and then the real class Event declaration appropriate? I'm obviously an inexperienced programmer with very spotty background--this isn't for homework. Would love suggestions and explanations. Please let me know if any part of this is confusing. Thanks.

    I launch Minecraft.exe which invokes Javaw.exe. I wish for Javaw.exe to be running in High priority because Minecraft lags if not. I tried invoking Minecraft.exe with a high priority by doing this: Start "Minecraft" /high "C:\Users\Barrie\Documents\Program Files\Minecraft\Minecraft.exe" This would work if it wasn't for Minecraft loading Javaw.exe. I would love a simple solution - perhaps a command I can put into the batch script - which will change the priority of Javaw.exe after it loads. Edit: I'd like to thank everyone for their response to my issue. I fixed this by executing Minecraft.exe with a batch script then calling an AHK script to change the priority of Javaw.exe.

But I don't understand why I'm getting the error message in the first place. Push doesn't modify the argument in any way.

    I want to give Gnome-Shell the highest priority, but I couldn't change the priority on the System Monitor, an error messeage says: Can't change priority's process with pid 2841 to -5. Access denied I tried the following commands: gksu gnome-system-monitor But I can't find Gnome-Shell on the processes list, so I tried "renice command", like this: sudo renice -15 2841 And finally got this problem, the Gnome-Shell's PID always changes, it's not the same PID numbers, so I have to change the priority every time I start up my system. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

    So, the problem is such as this: I have a method that does stuff and updates a progress bar. If I call the method after the form is fully loaded (i.e.: by assigning it to a button on the form) everything works fine. The problem is that I need the method to start working as soon as the form loads, by itself, so I would place it in the Form_Load method. The problem is that even though I call Application.DoEvents() right before calling that method from within Form_Load, the form doesn't show up until the method has completed everything. As I said, if I let the form load first and call the method from another UI element for instance, everything works fine. Thanks in advance.

The Slingbox is a TV streaming device that enables users to remotely view their home's cable. it seems that slingbox streams to amazon ec2 servers and from there to the client so i can't really give priority based on ip-address.

    Could someone briefly explain how to use QoS on Cisco ASA 5505? I have the basics of policing down, but what about shaping and priorities? Basically what I'm trying to do is carve out some bandwidth for my VPN subnets (in an object-group called priority-traffic). I've seen this Cisco QoS document, however configuring shaping and priority-queue don't seem to have any effects in my test. A full download of the linux kernel from kernel.org will boost a ping to a server via VPN sky high. Policing has been successful in passing this test, although it doesn't seem as efficient (I cap non-vpn traffic at 3 of my 4.5 megabits of bandwidth). Am I misunderstanding the results of the test? I think there is some simple concept I'm not grasping here.   • TFS query mixing Tasks and Bugs, sorted by Priority

    We're using TFS with MSF for Agile 4.2 on a project, and I have a bunch of work to do, both Tasks and Bugs. Both are prioritized by our managers, and assigned due dates and target releases. I use a Work Item query as my main TODO list, and I want to list all the Work Items assigned to me, in order by due date and priority. Problem: I can't seem to find a way to write a unified query that will list both Tasks and Bugs sorted by date and then priority. The problem is that Tasks and Bugs use different fields for Priority. So, my query currently lists the tasks by Due Date, then by Task Priority, then it lists Bugs by Due Date, then by Priority. So, I see tasks that are due later than bugs: Title Due Date Priority Task Priority task1 4/23/2010 Medium task2 4/23/2010 High task3 4/30/2010 Low task4 4/30/2010 Medium bug1 4/23/2010 1 bug2 4/23/2010 2 What I want: Title Due Date Priority Task Priority task1 4/23/2010 Medium task2 4/23/2010 High bug1 4/23/2010 1 bug2 4/23/2010 2 task3 4/30/2010 Low task4 4/30/2010 Medium I don't care if the bugs come before or after the tasks on the same due date; I just want all the work items grouped together by due date, so I never see Tasks for a later due date before Bugs for an earlier one. Another problem is the sorting on Task Priority -- alpha sort means I can't get them to sort by the meaning of the priority. But that's a minor problem I can live with if I can get the Tasks and Bugs intermingled. Any way to do this in a single query?

I also have a few pages (like the about page), that need high priority, but which I've implemented with the django flatpages framework. Is it possible for pages created this way to have a higher priority in the sitemap?

  • priority_queue with dynamic priorities

    Hey, I have a server application which accepts incomming queries and executes them. If there are too many queries they should be queued and if some of the other queries got executed the queued queries should be executed as well. Since I want to pass queries with different priorities I think using a priority_queue would be the best choice. e.g. The amout of the axcepting queries (a) hit the limt and new queries will be stored in the queue. All queries have a priority of 1 (lowest) if some of the queries from (a) get executed the programm will pick the query with the highest priority out of the queue and execute it. Still no problem. Now someone is sending a query with a priority of 5 which gets added to the queue. Since this is the query with the highest priority the application will execute this query as soon as the running queries no longer hit the limit. There might be the worst case that 500 queries with a priority of 1 are queued but wont be executed since someone is always sending queries with a priority of 5 hence these 500 queries will be queued for a looooong time. In order to prevent that I want to increase the prioritiy of all queries which have a lower priority than the query with the higher priority, in this example which have a priority lower than 5. So if the query with a priority of 5 gets pulled out of the queue all other queries with a priority < 5 should be increased by 0.2. This way queries with a low priority wont be queued for ever even if there might be 100 queries with a higher priority.   • Mass audio encoder

    I have a few thousand FLAC files which I would like to transcode to OGG Vorbis, but I can't find any suitable tools for the job. To name a few I have tried so far and why they are unsuitable: oggenc is single-threaded and would require me to automate it myself, mencoder requires the input to also contain video, and abcde assumes the input is a CD. The ideal tool should be multi-threaded, and support inputing multiple files located in different directories simultaneously. CLI or GUI makes no matter. Does such a tool exist?

  • How to set a low process priority for everything spawned from a command prompt in XP?

    As a developer, once or twice a week I run a full build on my XP dev machine. This will run at 100% cpu for 30 or 40 minutes, making my machine usless for anything other than basic browsing & email. Is there anyway I can specify that for a given process (i.e. a command prompt) it and any process spawned by it will hae a lower priority, say taking up no more than 60 - 70% of CPU, leaving my machine more usable. I don't mind the build talking 30 or 40% longer, if I still have use of my machine while it's running. Thanks BW P.S. I'd love to be able to throw more hardware at the problem, but that isn't under my control.

    Original question was : "How to assign highest priority to local repository without using sources.list file" I have setup a local repository with packages I downloaded. I use it to avoid downloading the same packages over the Internet, when I need to reinstall my Ubuntu. It is a basic repository, created with apt-ftparchive packages . > Packages. I made this a trusted repository to avoid "unauthenticated repository" warning. (When you have a untrusted repository, apt or synaptic try to download the same packages over the Internet, 'cause it is trusted). I have been using this local repository for at least 1 years. But I have to always put my local repository line at the top of the sources.list file to use this. But this is annoying, since I must open a terminal and do some typing on it every time I reinstall Ubuntu, though there is a better tool software-properties-gtk. I cannot use this tool since it place the source line at the end of `sources.list. And the real problem is that, the apt or synaptic always download a package from the source which is mentioned earlier, without inspecting whether the packages are already available in the local repository. So, I have no choice but to place the local source at the top of sources.list doing terminal (I actually don't hate terminal, but I need a solution) . I have tried this method. But this does not help me. My preference file is this in /etc/apt/preferences.d/local-pin-900 Package: * Pin: release o=Local,n=ubuntu-local Pin-Priority: 900 My release file is this Origin: Local Label: Local-Ubuntu Description: Local Ubuntu Repository Codename: ubuntu-local MD5Sum: ed43222856d18f389c637ac3d7dd6f85 1043412 Packages d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e 0 Sources When I enable the apt-preference, the apt-cache policy correctly shows the preference, e.g. It shows the local repository has the highest priority. But when I do this sudo apt-get install <package-name>, apt tries to download it from Internet. But when I place my local-repo at the top, it installs from local repository. So, My question is - 'Is it possible to force apt to use local repository when the package is available in local repository, without explicitly placing "the local source" at the top of my repository list (e.g sources.list file) ?'     I'm using Debian Testing together with the Deb Multimedia (previously Debian Multimedia) repository for testing. I want to reduce the priority of the deb-multimedia packages so it only installs certain packages. I've tried with: Package: * Pin: release o="Unofficial Multimedia Packages" Pin-Priority: 10 and Package: * Pin: origin "mirror.home-dn.net" Pin-Priority: 10 But neither works, the packages still have the default priority (500). The Release file from the repository looks like this: Archive: testing Version: None Component: main Origin: Unofficial Multimedia Packages Label: Unofficial Multimedia Packages Architecture: amd64 What am I doing wrong? Edit: It worked when I used the Version information instead: Package: * Pin: release v=None Pin-Priority: 10 But I still don't know the reason the other filters didn't work.

I want to install windows form the USB stick on my laptop but when ii try to restart the laptop to get acces to Bios i cant seem to find the command for it, its like it skips everything and just says ubuntu and then takes me to the login screen. So im wonder how to change the boot priority to USB in ubuntu.
