    I have misconception in understanding the relationship between Ruby language and Ruby on Rails Framework. Because of 'I am an absolute beginner' in web development I have no idea if I have to grasp the fundamentals of Ruby before I go with Ruby on Rails! I also want to ask who is behind both Ruby and Ruby on Rails. Who is developing both? And is there intention to improve its speed? In short, I'd like to know the road map to effectively beginning learning Ruby on Rails. Furthermore, I'm wondering about the next steps in improving Ruby and Rails and who are the main role players in improving them?

  • Unable to start the web application from localhost:3000(ruby on rails)

    I had created a demo web application by executing rails tickets and then i executed rails script/server to run it on localhost. Initially i was able to execute the application in the browser by typing localhost:3000 in the address bar, but then I deleted the folder tickets from my hard disk. Now again i created the same folder but when i try to run it using the same command rails script/server it says that vverma@l-vverma:~/railsExp/tickets$ rails script/server create File exists - script/server I tried deleting the script/server file but i still couldn't run the localhost:3000 in the browser Tried rails s as well, it gave the following output:- http://paste.ubuntu.com/1317610/ But still i was unable to run the app on 'localhost:3000' What is the solution to this

  • Can't figure out how to use db:seed for rails in netbeans

    can't seem to get my seeds.rb file to run through the command "rake db:seed". I'm using netbeans and I'm a beginner to rails, so I could be doing something really simple and stupid =/. I know you're meant to put your seeds.rb file in the db directory but netbeans doesn't seem to have one or might have renamed it... any help out there? Thanks in advance!

I did every thing I am required to do for upgrading and when I start the rails server using rails server it gives me this Please switch to Ruby 1.9's standard CSV library. It's FasterCSV plus support for Ruby 1.9's m17n encoding engine. I am using ruby-1.9.2-p0 and have fastercsv (1.5.3) gem installed. with the help of puts statements, i was able to track down where the error occurred. i found that the execution stops at this line Bundler.require(:default, Rails.env) if defined?(Bundler) in application.rb file. I tried many things but none worked .. please help..

    I have several separate Rails 2 applications which share the same cookie. I upgraded one the applications to Rails 3.2.15 now. Mandatory secret_token in Rails 3 makes it impossible to share the session with the Rails 2 apps. I am storing the session in Redis. What the visitor only gets in the cookie is a session ID. There's no need to encrypt it. Therefore, how to disable secret_token in Rails 3? A secret is required to generate an integrity hash for cookie session data. Use config.secret_token = "some secret phrase of at least 30 characters"in config/initializers/secret_token.rb

    Hey folks, I'm migrating a Website from Rails 2 (latest) to Rails 3 (beta2). Testing with Ruby 1.9.1p378 and Ruby 1.9.2dev (2010-04-05 trunk 27225) Stuck in a situation, i don't know which part will work well. Suspect yield is the problem, but don't know exactly. In my Layout Files I use the following technique quite often: app/views/layouts/application.html.erb: <%= yield(:sidebar) || render('shared/sidebar') %> For Example the partial look like: app/views/shared/_sidebar.html.erb: <p>Default sidebar Content. Bla Bla</p> Now it is time for the key part! In any view, I want to create a content_for block (optional). This can contain a pice of HTML etc. example below. If this block is set, the pice HTML inside should render in application.html.erb. If not, Rails should render the Partial at shared/_sidebar.html.erb on the right hand side. app/views/books/index.html.erb: <% content_for :sidebar do %> <strong>You have to read REWORK, a book from 37signals!</strong> <% end %> So you've got the idea. Hopefully. This technique worked well in any Rails 2.x Application. Now, in Rails 3 (beta2) only the yield Part is working. || render('shared/sidebar') The or side will not process by rails or maybe ruby. Thanks for input and time!

  • Rails 2.3.11 Server Crashing After 4 Requests

    I have a Rails 2.3.11 application running on my local Windows machine using InstantRails. I cd to my application directory, run ruby script/server to start the server running, and point my browser to localhost:3000. I get the page I expect, and am able to click a few links to other pages (all of them are static). The problem starts when I load the 4th page or so. It doesn't seem to be the gem though, because the segmentation fault sometimes occurs in C:/rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.1.2-x86-mswin32/lib/mongrel.rb:114 or C:/rails/ruby/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:306 Versions: >ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2012-02-08 patchlevel 358) [i386-mingw32] >rails -v Rails 2.3.11 I'd like to get this fixed so while I'm developing I don't have to keep restarting my server. Now my problem with it. When using Postgres as the database, it does not setup foreign keys. I would like the benefits of foreign keys in my schema such as referential integrity. So how do I apply foreign keys with Migrations?

  • Rails 3 shows 404 error instead of index.html (nginx + unicorn)

    I have an index.html in public/ that should be loading by default but instead I get a 404 error when I try to access http://example.com/ The page you were looking for doesn't exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved. This has something to do with nginx and unicorn which I am using to power Rails 3 When take unicorn out of the nginx configuration file, the problem goes away and index.html loads just fine. I've implemented a form in the likes of - <%= radio_button_tag :sort, "rating" %> <%= label_tag :sort_rating, "order by rating" %> <%= radio_button_tag :sort, "name" %> <%= label_tag :sort_name, "order by name" %> And now I am unsure how to implement the sort at the controller/model level. The aspects I am puzzled about are: Where should the sort be performed How could the sort parameter be persisted How could the code be reused Right now, I can't even get the selected sort method to remain selected after a submit. I would most appreciate any guidance or reference to an example.

    Hello, This should be a very simple rails question. I have a variable like the following. @administration = Administration.first I want this variable to be accessible through every controller action across all my controllers so for example if I have a Product controller and inside of it I have the usual CRUD actions, I want the @administration variable as defined above to be put into all the CRUD actions. (It would not be needed in destroy or create or update). I have many controllers throughout my project and I was wondering if there is an easier way than adding it manually through all of the actions that I want it in. I tried a global variable $administration = Administration.first but I run into an issue where it is not updated when I update the actual content of the Administration.first table. Also, I would like to avoid global variables. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

    So I just got started in Rails, and I'm trying to create an Object (a book_loan in my case) with a Form. The thing is that I get to this form by clicking on a book, so I pass the book_id as a parameter, like localhost:3000/loans/new?id=1. Now I don't want the user to be able to set the book id field in the form, since I already know the id. So my question is how to set the value in the form. I have been trying things like: <% form_for(@loan) do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> ... <%= @loan.book_id = params[:id] %> <%= f.submit 'Create' %> <% end %> without any success. Does anybody have a hint for me?

  • Spork servers super slow (>3m) to start for RSpec & Cucumber BDD

    I recently installed a fresh development setup on my laptop and now notice that my instances of spork take several minutes to start up.     Generally, I want my functional tests to not perform action caching. Rails seems to be on my side, defaulting to config.action_controller.perform_caching = false in environment/test.rb. This leads to normal functional tests not testing the caching. So how do I test caching in Rails 3. The solutions proposed in this thread seem rather hacky or taylored towards Rails 2: How to enable page caching in a functional test in rails? I want to do something like: test "caching of index method" do with_caching do get :index assert_template 'index' get :index assert_template '' end end Maybe there is also a better way of testing that the cache was hit?

    Hi I've just started learning rails and been going through some tutorials from learning rails (http://www.buildingwebapps.com/podcasts/79335-putting-the-page-contents-into-the) The tutorials appear to be Rails v2 and I'm on Rails v3 There is a line in the routes file which appears to be causing a problem map.view_page ':name', :controller => 'viewer', :action => 'show' The line works for the front end view i.e. my viewer controller but not for the back end I get the error NoMethodError in Viewer#show I think this has something to do with the view I am using and the line <%= @page.body %> I know it's difficult without the full code but if anyone can help that would be awesome
