• debootstrap linux-generic package and grub

  I am trying to build a thin client remix using debootstrap. I have been successful but am wondering about one thing. When I install linux-generic as per linuxlivecdcustomizationfromscratch It asks me where I want to install grub. I know the package grub is needed if you install Ubuntu off the live cd, but why is it trying to configure grub using the drives on my host system in the chroot? Thanks

• Acer Aspire one is falling apart on Ubuntu

  Question: How do I have my netbook detect and install hardware? Info: I have an Acer Aspire One, it came with windows XP and I loaded it with Win7. I decided I wanted to change to Ubuntu so I tried Ubuntu netbook remix, which failed horribly, and so after attempting 3 or so other OS's I ended with Ubuntu Desktop 9.10. Which worked fine for a while, but there were some minor issues so I asked a question about it here and decided to change my OS again. This last weekend I tried mandriva like that guy in my other question suggested, no success. when I had though my netbook lost the ability to use it's touch pad, I didn't think much of it, just thought it must be a driver or something. But When Mandriva failed, and I also while I was at it tried Damn small linux and Debian, which both failed to, I decided to switch back to Ubuntu Desktop(some where in here my keyboard stopped working for one attempt to). But first I gave the netbook remix one more try. it worked this time, with the exception of it didn't have any networking. I thought it was a driver issue again and finished the weekend with ubuntu desktop 9.10 again. But now things get really crazy. it doesn't know it has a wireless card or an ethernet card. It doesn't know my phone is connected trying to provide wireless broadband either. I'm clueless on what could be the problem. And with only a minimal amount of experience with Ubuntu can't navigate the entire interface with only my keyboard(it doesn't detect a USB mouse when I plug it in, it had when I installed it. in fact the network interfaces were working just fine when I live boot ubuntu to installed it). Even so, I don't know where to go or what to do to make it recognize it's hardware. I'm in a dire situation, any help is welcome.

• Using gnome-boxes with Remote Desktop Connection

  in the past I used to connect to my windows server from ubuntu with remmina (through rdp protocol). I've recently installed ubuntu gnome remix (12.10.1) and gnome-boxes and I'm wondering if I can do the same with gnome-boxes. I've tried creating a new item in gnome-boxes and entering as url "rdp://x.x.x.x" as I used to do in remmina bit it says that the rdp protocol is not supported. Unfortunatelly I cannot find any manual or documentation listing the supported protocol or giving instruction on how to connect to a remote desktop. Can someone help me please?

I really enjoyed being a speaker, although my presentation took a lot more time than it should, it was gratifying to see so many people staying until the end. I would like to know if you've been there, and, if so, what do you think of my presentation! Feel free to send your thoughts, whatever they are. • How do I compare the md5sum of a file with the md5 file (that was available to download with the file)?

  Images are available for a distro on http://livedistro.org/gnulinux/israel-remix-team-mint-12. I want to use the 32-bit version. I have downloaded the ISO file for the 32-bit version (customdist.iso). I have downloaded the md5 file for the ISO file (customdist.iso.md5). I want to calculate the md5sum of the ISO file and compare it to the md5 file. I can use the md5sum command to display within the terminal the calculated md5 for the ISO file. I have searched the web and can't find a way to compare the calculated md5 for the ISO file with the downloaded md5 file. So far, the closest I have come is the command md5sum -c customdist.iso.md5 from within the folder containing both the files, but this command gives the result: md5sum: customdist.iso.md5: no properly formatted MD5 checksum lines found Any ideas?

  When i got this netbook last year i planned n putting ubuntu netbook remix on it but i never did and now i can no longer booot n to windows for some reason so i finally decided to do it but after makig a usb stick with ubuntu on it it will not get to the menu where there is the black and white ubuntu logo and the option to install try and so on. I know to usb is configured correctly it will boot on other computers but on the netbook it only flashes SYSLINUX 4.06EOD..... and then flashs blue before turning black with the whit undercore in the top right corner for a very long time. any suggestions ive been told to disable acpi but i cant find it in the bios. (btw im uing 12.04 though ive tried 11.04 and used unetbootin linux live installer and universal usb installer to make the usb)

  Since installing Ubuntu 12.10 Gnome remix I encounter systemm's unpredictable and unwanted behavior. Almost after each resume from suspend (or even after unlocking the screen after it goes blank) I get apportcheckresume error and message "Ubuntu 12.10 has encountered an internal error".Many times the system event wont resume and I need to restart it. Other times log in screen is not visible, the screen is blank and i have to write my password "in blanco". Sometimes additional thing also happens - textures get messed up and background and windows get distorted by horizontal lines Sorry I can't localize the log file for the errors.   Originally asked on One Hundred Paper Cuts Answers thread On the official site: http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download The instructions for creating a bootable USB key for installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix include a line saying: "Insert a USB stick with at least 2GB of free space" I recently installed UNR on a netbook -- in fact, the one I'm using right now -- and I went ahead despite only having a 1GB USB key on hand. Everything went smoothly and installed 100% correctly. If I had waited to go out and buy a 2GB USB key I would have spent that money unnecessarily and wouldn't have been able to use the computer in the meantime. I was wondering if there's a specific rationale for requiring a 2GB USB key, or if the instructions could be changed to indicate that it can be done with only 1GB. Thanks!

• Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• How can you remove Unity from Ubuntu Netbook Edition

  In previous versions of Netbook Remix I was able to disable the netbook-launcher and just have a blank desktop. I liked the speed of the Netbook version but not the interface, this worked well for me. However, now with 10.10 and Unity I'm having trouble doing a similar thing. I tried removing netbook-launcher from the startup and tried uninstalling unity. The best result I got was a black desktop with a panel and a non configurable blank white background. Is Unity soo integrated into this version that I will have to just go with the default ubuntu installation?? In the past the default version has been slower then the Netbook version without the interface. Thanks.

• All video thumbnails fail to be generated

  Not a single video thumbnail is being generated and shown in Nautilus. The folder ~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/ keeps getting filled for all of them. I tried removing all the thumbnails from the folder, reinstalling the gstreamer-plugins-... and totem packages, changing the thumbnail settings (Always, 4 GB) in the Preview section of the Nautilus preferences. All to no avail. Some recommend to install packages like libxine1 and ffmpegthumbnailer but this didn't not solve it either. There used to be an .xsession-errors error log file generated in the home folder in previous version of Ubuntu but that doesn't seem to be the case any more. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 GNOME remix (x64) with the GNOME3 ppa packages installed. What could be the cause of the problem and how can I fix it?

• Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy. • Battery issues on Dell Inspiron XPS14z Ultrabook

  I'm new in the Ubuntu world. I just bought a Dell Inspiron XPS 14z Ultrabook and installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows thanks to the Ubuntu Secured Remix package. Everything works fine except the battery. I have, at most, 1h 30' battery life. With windows it can last more than 3h. Moreover, and I guess it's related to the battery issues, the fan is constantly running at high speed while it does not when working with windows. Do you know where can be the problem?

• Failed GRUB after 10.04 to 12.04 upgrade in system with LVM

  I am using Ubuntu Server as a SMB server at work and two days ago I have tried to upgrade it to 12.04. After reboot, I got this grub_xput missing grub rescue> and all attempts to start from this prompt failed (missing components, although grub directory is normally set as prefix). My system sits and boots on an LVM (soft raid-5). I have read almost all posts in many forums, tried grub rescue, boot-repair, ubuntu-secure-remix with boot-repair but without positive result. This is the log of my last (and best so far) attempt to fix this system. Any suggestions? Please help.
