  • SOAP vs REST (differences)

    - by Abdulaziz
I have read articles about the differences between SOAP and REST as a web service communication protocol, but I think that the biggest advantage for REST over SOAP are : REST is more dynamic, no need for creating and updating UDDI. REST is not restricted to XML format. REST web services can send plain text, JSON, and also XML. But SOAP is more standardized (Ex; security). So, am I correct in these points? Thanks

  • Do you have to install the REST starter kit in asp.net to access APIs?

    - by jonhobbs
Hi, I'm currently trying to access a REST API for the first time using visual web developer 2008 express edition. Every article I have found says you have to install the WCF REST starter kit which is a .msi file, which would suggest that I have to install it on my machine and presumably our server too. My question is this. Is there a non installable version that I can use, e.g. just by dropping DLLs into the Bin directory and then using the classes contained. Or is there more to it than that and am I just getting very confused about how it works? Jon

  • MongoDB REST interface not listening after update

    - by Ones and Zeroes
I replaced the mongodb-10gen install with the Ubuntu package (mongodb-server, mongodb-client and dev). apt-get install mongodb Thereafter, I am now unable to connect to the REST interface, where it worked before. Doing a wget to http://127.0.0.1:27018, I receive the following response: Connecting to 127.0.0.1:27018... failed: Connection refused. My previous /etc/mongodb.conf file had the following in: #enable REST rest = true Adding it to the packaged conf file does not resolve the issue, not even after restarting. I also tried changing the following with no effect: # Disable the HTTP interface (Defaults to localhost:27018). # nohttpinterface = true to # Disable the HTTP interface (Defaults to localhost:27018). nohttpinterface = false I have searched for days, and there doesn't seem to be anything on the Mongo site about a similar anomaly. If you have encountered a similar issue on Ubuntu Oneiric, please add your comments, even if you haven't found a solution to this issue.

  • REST-based file server

    - by Chris Wenham
I need to be able to PUT files and GET them later using nothing but HTTP, so I went searching for something that might match the terms "REST file server" or "HTTP file server" or "REST drop-box", etc. Unfortunately, these terms bring up the wrong kind of results on Google. What I want is the equivalent of an SMB fileshare over HTTP. Some ideal features: Can PUT a file of any type at http://servername/service/any/path/I/want/document.pdf Anyone with access can GET that file at the URL I PUT it at Supports AV scanning on any new file that has been PUT Supports DELETE of existing resources (files) Our shop runs Windows, but I'd be interested to know about Unix software that can do this kind of thing, too. It's to be used in an IT department for private users only. It won't be on a public-facing IP address. Does anything like this exist?

  • REST doesn't work with Sever-Client-Client setup

    - by drozzy
I am having a problem with my current RESTful api design. What I have is a REST api which is consumed by Django web-server, which renders the HTML templates. REST api > Django webserver > HTML The problem I am encountering is that I have to reconstruct all the URLS like mysite.com/main/cities/<id>/streets/ into equivalent rest api urls on my web-server layer: api.com/cities/<id>/streets/ Thus I have a lot of mapping back and forth, but as far as I know REST says that the client (in this case my web-server) should NOT need to know how to re-construct the urls. Can REST be used for such a setup and how? Or is it only viable for Server-Client architecture. Thanks

  • app-engine-rest-server to raise KeyError("name %s already used" % model_name)

    - by fx
    I'm playing with the project appengine-rest-server to create the REST webservices for all the existing models. I got a strange error, the first time I query the browser: http://localhost:8080/rest/metadata/user, it gives me the result: <xs:schema> - <xs:element name="user"> - <xs:complexType> - <xs:sequence> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="key" type="xs:normalizedString"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="surname" type="xs:string"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="firstname" type="xs:string"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="ages" type="xs:long"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="sex" type="xs:boolean"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="updatedDate" type="xs:dateTime"/> <xs:element maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0" name="createdDate" type="xs:dateTime"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema> But refreshing the page, gives me this error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 3185, in _HandleRequest self._Dispatch(dispatcher, self.rfile, outfile, env_dict) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 3128, in _Dispatch base_env_dict=env_dict) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 515, in Dispatch base_env_dict=base_env_dict) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 2387, in Dispatch self._module_dict) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 2297, in ExecuteCGI reset_modules = exec_script(handler_path, cgi_path, hook) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/GoogleAppEngineLauncher.app/Contents/Resources/GoogleAppEngine-default.bundle/Contents/Resources/google_appengine/google/appengine/tools/dev_appserver.py", line 2195, in ExecuteOrImportScript script_module.main() File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/helloworld/main.py", line 48, in main rest.Dispatcher.add_models({"user": UserModel}) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/helloworld/rest/__init__.py", line 845, in add_models cls.add_model(model_name, model_type) File "/Users/foo/Documents/AppEngine/helloworld/rest/__init__.py", line 863, in add_model raise KeyError("name %s already used" % model_name) KeyError: 'name user already used' Can someone give me the explanation on why it happens? Restarting the server, run on the browser again I get the xml result, but refreshing causes the error. Is it a bug in the appengine-rest-server application or it is in my code? My helloworld application is available for download here.

  • Trouble determining proper decoding of a REST response from an ArcGIS REST service using IHttpModule

    - by Ryan Taylor
First a little background on what I am trying to achieve. I have an application that is utilizing REST services served by ArcGIS Server and IIS7. The REST services return data in one of several different formats. I am requesting a JSON response. I want to be able to modify the response (remove or add parameters) before the response is sent to the client. However, I am having difficulty converting the stream to a string that I can modify. To that end, I have implemented the following code in order to try to inspect the stream. SecureModule.cs using System; using System.Web; namespace SecureModuleTest { public class SecureModule : IHttpModule { public void Init(HttpApplication context) { context.BeginRequest += new EventHandler(OnBeginRequest); } public void Dispose() { } public void OnBeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e) { HttpApplication application = (HttpApplication) sender; HttpContext context = application.Context; HttpRequest request = context.Request; HttpResponse response = context.Response; response.Filter = new ServicesFilter(response.Filter); } } } ServicesFilter.cs using System; using System.IO; using System.Text; namespace SecureModuleTest { class ServicesFilter : MemoryStream { private readonly Stream _outputStream; private StringBuilder _content; public ServicesFilter(Stream output) { _outputStream = output; _content = new StringBuilder(); } public override void Write(byte[] buffer, int offset, int count) { _content.Append(Encoding.UTF8.GetString(buffer, offset, count)); using (TextWriter textWriter = new StreamWriter(@"C:\temp\content.txt", true)) { textWriter.WriteLine(String.Format("Buffer: {0}", _content.ToString())); textWriter.WriteLine(String.Format("Length: {0}", buffer.Length)); textWriter.WriteLine(String.Format("Offset: {0}", offset)); textWriter.WriteLine(String.Format("Count: {0}", count)); textWriter.WriteLine(""); textWriter.Close(); } // Modify response _outputStream.Write(buffer, offset, count); } } } The module is installed in the /ArcGIS/rest/ virtual directory and is executed via the following GET request. http://localhost/ArcGIS/rest/services/?f=json&pretty=true The web page displays the expected response, however, the text file tells a very different (encoded?) story. Expect Response {"currentVersion" : "10.0", "folders" : [], "services" : [ ] } Text File Contents Buffer: ? ?`I?%&/m?{J?J??t??`$?@??????iG#)?*??eVe]f@????{???{???;?N'????\fdl??J??!????~|?"~?G?u]???'?)??G?????G??7N????W??{?????,??|?OR????q? How might I decode, unzip, and otherwise convert the byte stream into the string I know it should be for modification by my filter?

  • Java Cloud Service Integration to REST Service

    - by Jani Rautiainen
Service (JCS) provides a platform to develop and deploy business applications in the cloud. In Fusion Applications Cloud deployments customers do not have the option to deploy custom applications developed with JDeveloper to ensure the integrity and supportability of the hosted application service. Instead the custom applications can be deployed to the JCS and integrated to the Fusion Application Cloud instance. This series of articles will go through the features of JCS, provide end-to-end examples on how to develop and deploy applications on JCS and how to integrate them with the Fusion Applications instance. In this article a custom application integrating with REST service will be implemented. We will use REST services provided by Taleo as an example; however the same approach will work with any REST service. In this example the data from the REST service is used to populate a dynamic table. Pre-requisites Access to Cloud instance In order to deploy the application access to a JCS instance is needed, a free trial JCS instance can be obtained from Oracle Cloud site. To register you will need a credit card even if the credit card will not be charged. To register simply click "Try it" and choose the "Java" option. The confirmation email will contain the connection details. See this video for example of the registration.Once the request is processed you will be assigned 2 service instances; Java and Database. Applications deployed to the JCS must use Oracle Database Cloud Service as their underlying database. So when JCS instance is created a database instance is associated with it using a JDBC data source. The cloud services can be monitored and managed through the web UI. For details refer to Getting Started with Oracle Cloud. JDeveloper JDeveloper contains Cloud specific features related to e.g. connection and deployment. To use these features download the JDeveloper from JDeveloper download site by clicking the "Download JDeveloper 11.1.1.7.1 for ADF deployment on Oracle Cloud" link, this version of JDeveloper will have the JCS integration features that will be used in this article. For versions that do not include the Cloud integration features the Oracle Java Cloud Service SDK or the JCS Java Console can be used for deployment. For details on installing and configuring the JDeveloper refer to the installation guideFor details on SDK refer to Using the Command-Line Interface to Monitor Oracle Java Cloud Service and Using the Command-Line Interface to Manage Oracle Java Cloud Service. Access to a local database The database associated with the JCS instance cannot be connected to with JDBC.  Since creating ADFbc business component requires a JDBC connection we will need access to a local database. 3rd party libraries This example will use some 3rd party libraries for implementing the REST service call and processing the input / output content. Other libraries may also be used, however these are tested to work. Jersey 1.x Jersey library will be used as a client to make the call to the REST service. JCS documentation for supported specifications states: Java API for RESTful Web Services (JAX-RS) 1.1 So Jersey 1.x will be used. Download the single-JAR Jersey bundle; in this example Jersey 1.18 JAR bundle is used. Json-simple Jjson-simple library will be used to process the json objects. Download the  JAR file; in this example json-simple-1.1.1.jar is used. Accessing data in Taleo Before implementing the application it is beneficial to familiarize oneself with the data in Taleo. Easiest way to do this is by using a RESTClient on your browser. Once added to the browser you can access the UI: The client can be used to call the REST services to test the URLs and data before adding them into the application. First derive the base URL for the service this can be done with: Method: GET URL: https://tbe.taleo.net/MANAGER/dispatcher/api/v1/serviceUrl/<company name> The response will contain the base URL to be used for the service calls for the company. Next obtain authentication token with: Method: POST URL: https://ch.tbe.taleo.net/CH07/ats/api/v1/login?orgCode=<company>&userName=<user name>&password=<password> The response includes an authentication token that can be used for few hours to authenticate with the service: {   "response": {     "authToken": "webapi26419680747505890557"   },   "status": {     "detail": {},     "success": true   } } To authenticate the service calls navigate to "Headers -> Custom Header": And add a new request header with: Name: Cookie Value: authToken=webapi26419680747505890557 Once authentication token is defined the tool can be used to invoke REST services; for example: Method: GET URL: https://ch.tbe.taleo.net/CH07/ats/api/v1/object/candidate/search.xml?status=16 This data will be used on the application to be created. For details on the Taleo REST services refer to the Taleo Business Edition REST API Guide. Create Application First Fusion Web Application is created and configured. Start JDeveloper and click "New Application": Application Name: JcsRestDemo Application Package Prefix: oracle.apps.jcs.test Application Template: Fusion Web Application (ADF) Configure Local Cloud Connection Follow the steps documented in the "Java Cloud Service ADF Web Application" article to configure a local database connection needed to create the ADFbc objects. Configure Libraries Add the 3rd party libraries into the class path. Create the following directory and copy the jar files into it: <JDEV_USER_HOME>/JcsRestDemo/lib  Select the "Model" project, navigate "Application -> Project Properties -> Libraries and Classpath -> Add JAR / Directory" and add the 2 3rd party libraries: Accessing Data from Taleo To access data from Taleo using the REST service the 3rd party libraries will be used. 2 Java classes are implemented, one representing the Candidate object and another for accessing the Taleo repository Candidate Candidate object is a POJO object used to represent the candidate data obtained from the Taleo repository. The data obtained will be used to populate the ADFbc object used to display the data on the UI. The candidate object contains simply the variables we obtain using the REST services and the getters / setters for them: Navigate "New -> General -> Java -> Java Class", enter "Candidate" as the name and create it in the package "oracle.apps.jcs.test.model".  Copy / paste the following as the content: import oracle.jbo.domain.Number; public class Candidate { private Number candId; private String firstName; private String lastName; public Candidate() { super(); } public Candidate(Number candId, String firstName, String lastName) { super(); this.candId = candId; this.firstName = firstName; this.lastName = lastName; } public void setCandId(Number candId) { this.candId = candId; } public Number getCandId() { return candId; } public void setFirstName(String firstName) { this.firstName = firstName; } public String getFirstName() { return firstName; } public void setLastName(String lastName) { this.lastName = lastName; } public String getLastName() { return lastName; } } Taleo Repository Taleo repository class will interact with the Taleo REST services. The logic will query data from Taleo and populate Candidate objects with the data. The Candidate object will then be used to populate the ADFbc object used to display data on the UI. Navigate "New -> General -> Java -> Java Class", enter "TaleoRepository" as the name and create it in the package "oracle.apps.jcs.test.model".  Copy / paste the following as the content (for details of the implementation refer to the documentation in the code): import com.sun.jersey.api.client.Client; import com.sun.jersey.api.client.ClientResponse; import com.sun.jersey.api.client.WebResource; import com.sun.jersey.core.util.MultivaluedMapImpl; import java.io.StringReader; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Iterator; import java.util.List; import java.util.Map; import javax.ws.rs.core.MediaType; import javax.ws.rs.core.MultivaluedMap; import oracle.jbo.domain.Number; import org.json.simple.JSONArray; import org.json.simple.JSONObject; import org.json.simple.parser.JSONParser; /** * This class interacts with the Taleo REST services */ public class TaleoRepository { /** * Connection information needed to access the Taleo services */ String _company = null; String _userName = null; String _password = null; /** * Jersey client used to access the REST services */ Client _client = null; /** * Parser for processing the JSON objects used as * input / output for the services */ JSONParser _parser = null; /** * The base url for constructing the REST URLs. For this example we will create a "Transient" view object that will be programmatically populated based the data obtained from Taleo REST services. Creating ADFbc objects Choose the "Model" project and navigate "New -> Business Tier : ADF Business Components : View Object". On the "Initialize Business Components Project" choose the local database connection created in previous step. On Step 1 enter "JcsRestDemoVO" on the "Name" and choose "Rows populated programmatically, not based on query": On step 2 create the following attributes: CandId Type: Number Updatable: Always Key Attribute: checked Name Type: String Updatable: Always On steps 3 and 4 accept defaults and click "Next".  On step 5 check the "Application Module" checkbox and enter "JcsRestDemoAM" as the name: Click "Finish" to generate the objects. Populating the VO To display the data on the UI the "transient VO" is populated programmatically based on the data obtained from the Taleo REST services. Open the "JcsRestDemoVOImpl.java". Copy / paste the following as the content (for details of the implementation refer to the documentation in the code): import java.sql.ResultSet; import java.util.List; import java.util.ListIterator; import oracle.jbo.server.ViewObjectImpl; import oracle.jbo.server.ViewRowImpl; import oracle.jbo.server.ViewRowSetImpl; // --------------------------------------------------------------------- // --- File generated by Oracle ADF Business Components Design Time. // --- Tue Feb 18 09:40:25 PST 2014 // --- Custom code may be added to this class. // --- Warning: Do not modify method signatures of generated methods. // --------------------------------------------------------------------- public class JcsRestDemoVOImpl extends ViewObjectImpl { /** * This is the default constructor (do not remove). */ public JcsRestDemoVOImpl() { } @Override public void executeQuery() { /** * For some reason we need to reset everything, otherwise * 2nd entry to the UI screen may fail with * "java.util.NoSuchElementException" in createRowFromResultSet * call to "candidates.next()". • Rest client throw timeout exception

    - by shandu
Hi, I have create REST client in C# using example on this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa395208(v=vs.90).aspx. Server is built in PHP. When I send request to some urls I have this exception: The request channel timed out while waiting for a reply after 00:00:59.9531250. Increase the timeout value passed to the call to Request or increase the SendTimeout value on the Binding. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout. But, sometimes, when I debug code, I get response. How to solve this?

  • How to handle business rules with a REST API?

    - by Ciprio
I have a REST API to manage a booking system I'm searching how to manage this situation : A customer can book a time slot : A TimeSlot resource is created and linked to a Person resource. In order to create the link between a time lot and a person, the REST client send a POST request on the TimeSlot resource But if too many people booked the same slot (let's say the limit is 5 links), it must be impossible to create more associations. How can I handle this business restriction ? Can I return a 404 status code with a JSON response detailing the error with a status code ? Is it a RESTFul approach ? EDIT : Like suggested below I used status 409 Conflict in addition to a JSON response detailing the error

  • Rest Web Service with App Engine and Webapp

    - by fceruti
I want to build a REST web service on app engine. Currently i have this: from google.appengine.ext import webapp from google.appengine.ext.webapp import util class UsersHandler(webapp.RequestHandler): def get(self, name): self.response.out.write('Hello '+ name+'!') def main(): util.run_wsgi_app(application) #Map url like /rest/users/johnsmith application = webapp.WSGIApplication([(r'/rest/users/(.*)',UsersHandler)] debug=True) if __name__ == '__main__': main() And i would like to retreive for example all my users when the path /rest/users is accessed. I Imagine I can do this by building another handler, but I want to know if is possible to do it inside of this handler.

  • Passing Validation exceptions via WCF REST

    - by Coppermill
I am using WCF and REST, and I have complex types, which are working fine. Now I need to check for validation, I am thinking of using DataAnnotations e.g. public class Customer { [Required] public string FirstName {get;set;} } Now where the issue is how do I pass this validation down to the REST service? ALso I need to validate the object when it comes back, and throw an exception, if I am to throw an exception then what is the best way of doing this using REST?

  • What is the need for 'discoverability' in a REST API when the clients are not advanced enough to make use of it anyway?

    - by aditya menon
The various talks I have watched and tutorials I scanned on REST seem to stress something called 'discoverability'. To my limited understanding, the term seems to mean that a client should be able to go to http://URL - and automatically get a list of things it can do. What I am having trouble understanding - is that 'software clients' are not human beings. They are just programs that do not have the intuitive knowledge to understand what exactly to do with the links provided. Only people can go to a website and make sense of the text and links presented and act on it. So what is the point of discoverability, when the client code that accesses such discoverable URLs cannot actually do anything with it, unless the human developer of the client actually experiments with the resources presented? This looks like the exact same thing as defining the set of available functions in a Documentation manual, just from a different direction and actually involving more work for the developer. Why is this second approach of pre-defining what can be done in a document external to the actual REST resources, considered inferior?

  • Cross-domain REST proxy with Javascript, HTML5

    - by Bosh
I'm writing a service (say, service.com) that provides a REST API to external apps running inside of IFrames. (These apps are hosted from domains outside the service.com). I'm planning a javascript client library for the apps to make pure-javascript requests to the service.com REST API -- basically using postMessage and some ad-hoc encapsulation of my API calls to get messages back and forth across frames (from the outside-app.com IFrame -- service.com REST API, and back to the IFrame with a response). My question: is there any robust, general-purpose javascript library to accomplish the kind of cross-domain REST request proxying I need, or should I just hack it from scratch?

  • IS it ok to use REST for CRUD operations?

    - by l0l0l0l0l
Recently I moved to Laravel and I was surprised on how good setting the controllers as RESTful is, it made routes and my code cleaner. I'm kinda new on web development and never used REST before since all my clients' projects are basically CRUD operations. Are there any cool buzzword to this "approach" or I'm just stupid for doing it? I don't plan to follow any REST patterns, just to make my life easier and code cleaner. Basically just GET/POST, the other ones are not native anyway so (emulated on hidden form value).

  • REST Authentication in PHP (CodeIgniter)

    - by zidane
I writing REST API form my web application. Application is written using CodeIgniter framework. Application itself is working fine, but I'm stuck on making REST Authentication. I think that basic Http Authentication will be good enough for some time. Public API is not yet planned. Is there any code example how to achieve REST Authentication so after user is authenticated he can freely call all protected methods.

  • Java REST Interface

    - by Vikram
I have a PHP web application environment. I am using Slim Framework as REST interface for my application. My application front-end is written using Backbone.js and jQuery. There is a utility (.jar file) which when I use command line makes a remote call (I guess this is a Web Service) which returns me the data. how do I best incorporate this into my webapplication described on top? My application front end will have a Button that should make an AJAX call to the REST Interface and fetch the data as JSON. My approach: PHP-REST interface url is: /api/phprestapi.php exists Add a JAVA-REST interface at url: /api/javarestapi.java (Perhaps) to separate these two Existing Environment: LAMP Stack on Ubuntu How do I achieve this? What is the kind of effort involved? Thanks for your pointers

  • Should one generally develop a client library for REST services to help prevent API breakages?

    - by BestPractices
We have a project where UI code will be developed by the same team but in a different language (Python/Django) from the services layer (REST/Java). The code for each layer exits in different code repositories and which can follow different release cycles. I'm trying to come up with a process that will prevent/reduce breaking changes in the services layer from the perspective of the UI layer. I've thought to write integration tests at the UI layer level that we'll run whenever we build the UI or the services layer (we're using Jenkins as our CI tool to build the code which is in two Git repos) and if there are failures then something in the services layer broke and the commit is not accepted. Would it also be a good idea (is it a best practice?) to have the developer of the services layer create and maintain a client library for the REST service that exists in the UI layer that they will update whenever there is a breaking change in their Service API? Conceivably, we would then have the advantage of a statically-typed API that the UI code builds against. If the client library API changes, then the UI code won't compile (so we'll know sooner that there was a breaking change). I'd also still run the integration tests upon building the UI or services layer to further validate that the integration between UI and the service(s) still works.

  • Which .NET REST approach/technology/tool should I use?

    - by SonOfPirate
I am implementing a RESTful web service and several client applications that are mostly in Silverlight. I am finding a litany of options for developing both the server-side and client-side of the API but am not sure which is the best approach. I'm concerned about stability as well as a platform that will continue to exist a few months from now. We started using the REST Starter Kit with .NET 3.5 but moved to the new WCF Web API when updating to .NET 4.0. All of their documentation indicates that WCF Web API is the replacement for the RSK. However, Web API is only in Preview 4 and does not include support for Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 clients (yet). WCF Web API looks like a wrapper on top of the WCF WebHttp Services stuff provided in the System.ServiceModel.Web library which makes me think that maybe it would be simpler to just go with the built-in stuff but Web API does offer some nice features. I am specifically tied-up trying to determine the best course for the client-side. My main requirement is that I need to support deserializing into my client-side objects quickly and easily. The Web API offers a nice client library but doesn't have a Silverlight version. I'd like to use the latest approach and the toolset that is being actively developed and supported. Is the REST Starter Kit really obsolete? Has anyone had any success implementing the WCF Web API toolkit? Is there merit to using either of these over the built-in WCF WebHttp Services features found in System.ServiceModel.Web? Is there a single solution that works for any client (web, Silverlight, etc.)? What suggestions do you have?

  • REST design: what verb and resource name to use for a filtering service

    - by kabaros
I am developing a cleanup/filtering service that has a method that receives a list of objects serialized in xml, and apply some filtering rules to return a subset of those objects. In a REST-ful service, what verb shall I use for such a method? I thought that GET is a natural choice, but I have to put the serialized XML in the body of the request which works but feels incorrect. The other verbs don't seem to fit semantically. What is a good way to define that Service interface? Naming the resource /Cleanup or /Filter seems weird mainly because in the examples I see online, it is always a name rather than a verb being used for resource name. Am I right to feel that REST services are better suited for CRUD operations and you start bending the rules in situations like this service? If yes, am I then making a wrong architectural choice. I've pushed to develop this service in REST-ful style (as opposed to SOAP) for simplicity, but such awkward cases happen a lot and make me feel like I am missing something. Either choosing REST where it shouldn't be used or may be over-thinking some stuff that doesn't really matter? In that case, what really matters?

  • SOAPUI Extract data from SOAP Response and use in REST request

    - by Adrian
I have been looking at the answer to this question: Pulling details from response to new request SoapUI which is similar to what I am looking for but I can't get it to work. I have a small SOAPUI testsuite and I need to extract a value from the response of a SOAP request and then use this value in a subsequent REST request. The response to my SOAP request is: <ns0:session xmlns:ns0="http://www.someurl.com/la/la/v1_0"> <token>AQIC5wM2xAAIwMg==#</token> </ns0:session> so I need the token to use in my REST request. I know it involves using Property Transfer and some XPath / XQuery but I just can't get it right. At the moment my property transfer window points to Source: SOAP test Property: Response and has data(/session/token/text()) in the text box. In target it has Target: REST testcase Property: newProp and I have Use XQuery checked. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adrian

  • REST client website login

    - by Jordan
I have written a REST service that uses WSSE as an authentication method but i want to be able to use this rest service through a browser by creating a website around the service. I want the user to be able to log in on the website then when they view, for example the "view users" page an ajax request is made to test.com/users and back comes the list. The part i'm trying to get my head around is the logging in/out on the website and keeping the user logged in across pages. Since in a true REST implementation there's no state held on the server, i can't use $_SESSION and now i don't know where to start! What is the best way to go about this? Do i still need to store session information on the server then possibly use cURL to make the request? Thanks Jay

Can anyone suggest any ideas related to this ? As i am new to mobile development unable to figure out the right and correct method to proceed. Thanks in Advance
