• Change a finder method w/ parameters to an association

    - by Sai Emrys
How do I turn this into a has_one association? (Possibly has_one + a named scope for size.) class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :assets, :foreign_key => 'creator_id' def avatar_asset size = :thumb # The LIKE is because it might be a .jpg, .png, or .gif. # More efficient methods that can handle that are OK. ;) self.assets.find :first, :conditions => ["thumbnail = '#{size}' and filename LIKE ?", self.login + "_#{size}.%"] end end EDIT: Cuing from AnalogHole on Freenode #rubyonrails, we can do this: has_many :assets, :foreign_key => 'creator_id' do def avatar size = :thumb find :first, :conditions => ["thumbnail = ? and filename LIKE ?", size.to_s, proxy_owner.login + "_#{size}.%"] end end ... which is fairly cool, and makes syntax a bit better at least. However, this still doesn't behave as well as I would like. Particularly, it doesn't allow for further nice find chaining (such that it doesn't execute this find until it's gotten all its conditions). More importantly, it doesn't allow for use in an :include. Ideally I want to do something like this: PostsController def show post = Post.get_cache(params[:id]) { Post.find(params[:id], :include => {:comments => {:users => {:avatar_asset => :thumb}} } ... end ... so that I can cache the assets together with the post. Or cache them at all, really - e.g. get_cache(user_id){User.find(user_id, :include => :avatar_assets)} would be a good first pass. This doesn't actually work (self == User), but is correct in spirit: has_many :avatar_assets, :foreign_key => 'creator_id', :class_name => 'Asset', :conditions => ["filename LIKE ?", self.login + "_%"] (Also posted on Refactor My Code.)

  • Set a datetime for next or previous sunday at specific time

    - by Marc
I have an app where there is always a current contest (defined by start_date and end_date datetime). I have the following code in the application_controller.rb as a before_filter. def load_contest @contest_last = Contest.last @contest_last.present? ? @contest_leftover = (@contest_last.end_date.utc - Time.now.utc).to_i : @contest_leftover = 0 if @contest_last.nil? Contest.create(:start_date => Time.now.utc, :end_date => Time.now.utc + 10.minutes) elsif @contest_leftover < 0 @winner = Organization.order('votes_count DESC').first @contest_last.update_attributes!(:organization_id => @winner.id, :winner_votes => @winner.votes_count) if @winner.present? Organization.update_all(:votes_count => 0) Contest.create(:start_date => @contest_last.end_date.utc, :end_date => Time.now.utc + 10.minutes) end end My questions: 1) I would like to change the :end_date to something that signifies next Sunday at a certain time (eg. next Sunday at 8pm). Similarly, I could then set the :start_date to to the previous Sunday at a certain time. I saw that there is a sunday() class (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/Time.html#method-i-sunday), but not sure how to specify a certain time on that day. 2) For this situation of always wanting the current contest, is there a better way of loading it in the app? Would caching it be better and then reloading if a new one is created? Not sure how this would be done, but seems to be more efficient. Thanks!

  • Weird Rails database errors

    - by Jason Swett
I've had some trouble getting my Rails app to connect to PostgreSQL so I decided to just say screw it and use SQLite for now. (I'm using the tutorial here: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html) I started a BRAND NEW, fresh Rails app from this tutorial. When I visit my app in the browser after deleting public/index.html, I get this the first time: Please install the pg adapter: `gem install activerecord-pg-adapter` (no such file to load -- active_record/connection_adapters/pg_adapter) That's odd to me because I'm not mentioning PostgreSQL anywhere. Here's my databases.yml: # SQLite version 3.x # gem install sqlite3-ruby (not necessary on OS X Leopard) development: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/development.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 # Warning: The database defined as "test" will be erased and # re-generated from your development database when you run "rake". # Do not set this db to the same as development or production. test: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/test.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 production: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/production.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 To make things more confusing, I only get that "pg adapter" error on the first load. For every subsequent page request, I get this error: ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished So even though I removed all mention of PostgreSQL, I'm still getting errors. What could be going on?

  • Why is Apache + Rails is spitting out two status headers for code 500?

    - by Daniel Beardsley
I have a rails app that is working fine except for one thing. When I request something that doesn't exist (i.e. /not_a_controller_or_file.txt) and rails throws a "No Route matches..." exception, the response is this (blank line intentional): HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 10:28:02 GMT Content-Type: text/html Content-Length: 122 Vary: Accept-Encoding Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=100 Connection: Keep-Alive Status: 500 Internal Server Error Content-Type: text/html

500 Internal Server Error

I have the ExceptionLogger plugin in /vendor, though that doesn't seem to be the problem. I haven't added any error handling beyond the custom 500.html in public (though the response doesn't contain that HTML) and I have no idea where this bit of html is coming from. So Something, somewhere is adding that HTTP/1.1 200 status code too early, or the Status: 500 too late. I suspect it's Apache because I get the appropriate HTTP/1.1 500 header (at the top) when I use Webrick. My production stack is as follows: Apache 2 Mongrel (5 instances) RubyOnRails 2.1.1 (happens in both 1.2 and 2.1.1) I forgot to mention, the error is caused by a "no route matches..." exception

  • Saving a Record with Rails Association

    - by tshauck
Hi, I've been going through the Rails Guides, but have gotten stuck on associations after going through validations and migrations. So, I have the following models Job and Person, where a Person can have many jobs. I know that in reality there'd be a many-to-many, but I'm trying to get my handle on this first. class Job < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :people end and class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :jobs end Here's the schema ActiveRecord::Schema.define(:version => 20110108185924) do create_table "jobs", :force => true do |t| t.string "occupation" t.boolean "like" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.integer "person_id" end create_table "people", :force => true do |t| t.string "first_name" t.string "last_name" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" end end Is there some I can do the following j = Job.first; j.Person? Then that'd give me access to the Person object associated with the j. I couldn't find it on guides.rubyonrails.org, although it has been very helpful getting a grip on migrations and validations thus far. Thanks PS, If there are any tutorials that covers more of this kind of things links would be great.

  • Rails AtomFeedBuilder Entry :Url option appears in url tag but not in link tag

    - by Nick
Hello, I'm using the AtomFeedHelper and everything is working fine except for one feed where I need to link each entry to a URL which is not the default polymorphic_url for the record. Per the documentation I've specified an :url option for the entry. This correctly renders a
tag in the atom node but the <link rel="alternate" still points to the default polymorphic_url. Looking at the source and the documentation I don't understand why this is happening. Here's an example builder: atom_feed do |feed| feed.title("Reports") feed.updated(@reports.first.created_at) for report in @reports content = report.notes feed.entry(report) do |entry| entry.title(report.title) entry.content(content, :type => 'html') entry.url("http://myhost/page/") entry.updated(report.updated_at.strftime("%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ")) entry.author do |author| author.name(report.user.username) end end end end Here's an example of a problem node:

Test Title

Test Content

I wan the href value in the link tag to match the value in the url tag but it does not. When I look at the source listed for entry here http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Helpers/AtomFeedHelper/AtomFeedBuilder.html I'd assume that this line would work correctly: @xml.link(:rel => 'alternate', :type => 'text/html', :href => options[:url] || @view.polymorphic_url(record)) Confused. Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks all!

  • What to Expect in Rails 4

    - by mikhailov
Rails 4 is nearly there, we should be ready before it released. Most developers are trying hard to keep their application on the edge. Must see resources: 1) @sikachu talk: What to Expect in Rails 4.0 - YouTube 2) Rails Guides release notes: http://edgeguides.rubyonrails.org/4_0_release_notes.html There is a mix of all major changes down here: ActionMailer changes excerpt: Asynchronously send messages via the Rails Raise an ActionView::MissingTemplate exception when no implicit template could be found ActionPack changes excerpt Added controller-level etag additions that will be part of the action etag computation Add automatic template digests to all CacheHelper#cache calls (originally spiked in the cache_digests plugin) Add Routing Concerns to declare common routes that can be reused inside others resources and routes Added ActionController::Live. Mix it in to your controller and you can stream data to the client live truncate now always returns an escaped HTML-safe string. The option :escape can be used as false to not escape the result Added ActionDispatch::SSL middleware that when included force all the requests to be under HTTPS protocol ActiveModel changes excerpt AM::Validation#validates ability to pass custom exception to :strict option Changed `AM::Serializers::JSON.include_root_in_json' default value to false. Now, AM Serializers and AR objects have the same default behaviour Added ActiveModel::Model, a mixin to make Ruby objects work with AP out of box Trim down Active Model API by removing valid? and errors.full_messages ActiveRecord changes excerpt Use native mysqldump command instead of structure_dump method when dumping the database structure to a sql file. Attribute predicate methods, such as article.title?, will now raise ActiveModel::MissingAttributeError if the attribute being queried for truthiness was not read from the database, instead of just returning false ActiveRecord::SessionStore has been extracted from Active Record as activerecord-session_store gem. Please read the README.md file on the gem for the usage Fix reset_counters when there are multiple belongs_to association with the same foreign key and one of them have a counter cache Raise ArgumentError if list of attributes to change is empty in update_all Add Relation#load. This method explicitly loads the records and then returns self Deprecated most of the 'dynamic finder' methods. All dynamic methods except for find_by_... and find_by_...! are deprecated Added ability to ActiveRecord::Relation#from to accept other ActiveRecord::Relation objects Remove IdentityMap ActiveSupport changes excerpt ERB::Util.html_escape now escapes single quotes ActiveSupport::Callbacks: deprecate monkey patch of object callbacks Replace deprecated memcache-client gem with dalli in ActiveSupport::Cache::MemCacheStore Object#try will now return nil instead of raise a NoMethodError if the receiving object does not implement the method, but you can still get the old behavior by using the new Object#try! Object#try can't call private methods Add ActiveSupport::Deprecations.behavior = :silence to completely ignore Rails runtime deprecations What are the most important changes for you?

  • session fixation

    - by markiv
Hi All, I am new to web development, and trying to get a hold on security issues. I went through this article on http://guides.rubyonrails.org/security.html these are some of the steps the author has mentioned how an attacker fixes session. 1. The attacker creates a valid session id: He loads the login page of the web application where he wants to fix the session, and takes the session id in the cookie from the response (see number 1 and 2 in the image). 2. He possibly maintains the session. Expiring sessions, for example every 20 minutes, greatly reduces the time-frame for attack. Therefore he accesses the web application from time to time in order to keep the session alive. 3. Now the attacker will force the user’s browser into using this session id (see number 3 in the image). As you may not change a cookie of another domain (because of the same origin policy), the attacker has to run a JavaScript from the domain of the target web application. Injecting the JavaScript code into the application by XSS accomplishes this attack. Here is an example: . Read more about XSS and injection later on. 4. The attacker lures the victim to the infected page with the JavaScript code. By viewing the page, the victim’s browser will change the session id to the trap session id. 5. As the new trap session is unused, the web application will require the user to authenticate. 6. From now on, the victim and the attacker will co-use the web application with the same session: The session became valid and the victim didn’t notice the attack. I dont understand couple of points. i) why is user made to login in step5, since session is sent through. ii) I saw possible solutions on wiki, like user properties check and others why cant we just reset the session for the user whoever is login in when they enter username and password in step5? Thanks in advance Markiv

  • Rails program is not being run on apache + passenger - only directory listing

    - by user909943
I have successfully installed Phusion passenger + Apache 2 + Rails 3.1 program + git on a linux Debian 6. I ran passenger-install-apache2-module and followed the configuration instructions. I followed also the setup instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RubyOnRails#Configure%20Apache My program is in /var/www/myrailsproject and runs fine on webrick on my mac. When going to myhomepage.com (example) I only see directory listing. By preventing directory listing and setting Options -Indexes in < Document tag in /etc/apache2/sites-available default or myhomepage.com I get an error on my website: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache/2.2.19 (Debian) Server at myhomepage.com Port 80 In /etc/apache2/apache.conf I added: ServerName myhomepage.com LoadModule passenger_module /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-3.0.8/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-3.0.8 PassengerRuby /usr/bin/ruby1.8 In /etc/apache2/sites-available myhomepage.com: < VirtualHost *:80 ServerName myhomepage.com ServerAlias www.myhomepage.com DocumentRoot /var/www/myrailsproject/public ErrorLog /var/www/logs/error.log CustomLog /var/www/logs/access.log combined RailsEnv test RackEnv test RailsBaseURI /mayrailsproject < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride all Order allow, deny allow from all < /Directory> < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject/public> AllowOverride All Options -Indexes +FollowSymLinks MultiViews Order allow, deny Allow from all < /Directory> RailsSpawnMethod smart PassengerPoolIdleTime 1000 RailsAppSpawnerIdleTime 0 RailsFrameworkSpawnerIdleTime 0 PassengerMaxRequests 5000 PassengerStatThrottleRate 5 < /VirtualHost I think I have tried all possible combinations of values and variables in < Directory (and < Directory /, < Directory /var/www etc.) the dafault looks like: < VirtualHost *:80 ServerName myhomepage.com RailsBaseURI /myrailsproject DocumentRoot /var/www/myrailsproject/public RackEnv test RailsEnv test < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all < /Directory> <Directory /root/public/myrailsproject/public> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin"> AllowOverride None Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined Alias /doc/ "/usr/share/doc/" < Directory "/usr/share/doc/"> Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 ::1/128 < /Directory> < /VirtualHost So I wonder why my rails project is not being run, only directory listing. I do not have any index file in my project, routes.rb routes to root :to = 'static_pages#home' I think all permissions are as they should be. Thanks a lot in advance Regards Íris

  • Setting up Rails to work with sqlserver

  • Does anyone know how to appropriately deal with user timezones in rails 2.3?

    - by Amazing Jay
We're building a rails app that needs to display dates (and more importantly, calculate them) in multiple timezones. Can anyone point me towards how to work with user timezones in rails 2.3(.5 or .8) The most inclusive article I've seen detailing how user time zones are supposed to work is here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/howtos/time-zones... although it is unclear when this was written or for what version of rails. Specifically it states that: "Time.zone - The time zone that is actually used for display purposes. This may be set manually to override config.time_zone on a per-request basis." Keys terms being "display purposes" and "per-request basis". Locally on my machine, this is true. However on production, neither are true. Setting Time.zone persists past the end of the request (to all subsequent requests) and also affects the way AR saves to the DB (basically treating any date as if it were already in UTC even when its not), thus saving completely inappropriate values. We run Ruby Enterprise Edition on production with passenger. If this is my problem, do we need to switch to JRuby or something else? To illustrate the problem I put the following actions in my ApplicationController right now: def test p_time = Time.now.utc s_time = Time.utc(p_time.year, p_time.month, p_time.day, p_time.hour) logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect logger.error p_time.inspect logger.error s_time.inspect jl = JunkLead.create! jl.date_at = s_time logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect jl.save! logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test2 Time.zone = 'Mountain Time (US & Canada)' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test3 Time.zone = 'UTC' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end and they yield the following: Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:50) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:50 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 21ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test2 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:53) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Completed in 143ms (View: 1, DB: 3) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test2] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:59) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:59 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Completed in 20ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test3 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:03) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Completed in 17ms (View: 0, DB: 2) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test3] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:04) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:16:05 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 151ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] It should be clear above that the 2nd call to /test shows Time.zone set to Mountain, even though it shouldn't. Additionally, checking the database reveals that the test action when run after test2 saved a JunkLead record with a date of 2010-12-22 15:00:00, which is clearly wrong.

  • Add note model in Rails

    - by dannymcc
    Hi Everyone, I am following the 15 minute blog tutorial on Ruby on Rails .com: http://media.rubyonrails.org/video/rails_blog_2.mov and am stumbling into some issues. I am using the following alterations to the names in the tutorial: posts = kases comments = notes I have setup the models as follows: class Kase < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :jobno has_many :notes belongs_to :company # foreign key: company_id belongs_to :person # foreign key in join table belongs_to :surveyor, :class_name => "Company", :foreign_key => "appointedsurveyor_id" belongs_to :surveyorperson, :class_name => "Person", :foreign_key => "surveyorperson_id" def to_param jobno end and... class Note < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :kase end The Notes controller look like this: # POST /notes # POST /notes.xml def create @kase = Kase.find(params[:kase_id]) @note = @kase.notes.build(params[:note]) redirect_to @kase end and the database scheme for Kases looks like this: create_table "notes", :force => true do |t| t.integer "kase_id" t.text "body" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" end and for kases... create_table "kases", :force => true do |t| t.string "jobno" t.date "dateinstructed" t.string "clientref" t.string "clientcompanyname" t.text "clientcompanyaddress" t.string "clientcompanyfax" t.string "casehandlername" t.string "casehandlertel" t.string "casehandleremail" t.text "casesubject" t.string "transport" t.string "goods" t.string "claimantname" t.string "claimantaddressline1" t.string "claimantaddressline2" t.string "claimantaddressline3" t.string "claimantaddresscity" t.string "claimantaddresspostcode" t.string "claimantcontact" t.string "claimanttel" t.string "claimantmob" t.string "claimantemail" t.string "claimanturl" t.string "lyingatlocationname" t.string "lyingatlocationaddressline1" t.string "lyingatlocationaddressline2" t.string "lyingatlocationaddressline3" t.string "lyingatlocationaddresscity" t.string "lyingatlocationaddresspostcode" t.string "lyingatlocationcontactname" t.string "lyingattel" t.string "lyingatmobile" t.string "lyingatlocationurl" t.text "comments" t.string "invoicenumber" t.string "netamount" t.string "vat" t.string "grossamount" t.date "dateclosed" t.date "datepaid" t.datetime "filecreated" t.string "avatar_file_name" t.string "avatar_content_type" t.integer "avatar_file_size" t.datetime "avatar_updated_at" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.string "kase_status" t.string "invoice_date" t.integer "surveyorperson_id" t.integer "appointedsurveyor_id" t.integer "person_id" t.string "company_id" t.string "dischargeamount" t.string "dishchargeheader" t.text "highrisesubject" end Whenever I enter a note into the kase show view's note entry form:
Notes

<%= render :partial => @kase.notes %>
<% form_for [@kase, Note.new] do |f| %>
<%= f.label :body, "New Note" %>
<%= f.text_area :body %>

<%= f.submit "Add Note" %>
<% end %> partial: <% div_for note do %>
Created <%= time_ago_in_words(note.created_at) %> ago
<%= h(note.body) %>
<% end %> I get the following error: ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound in NotesController#create Couldn't find Kase with ID=Test Case I have tried removing the def to_param jobno end from the kase model, but the same error shows. Any ideas what I'm missing? Thanks, Danny
