    Xeon: Dual Core Intel® Xeon® W3503 2.40GHz, 4M L3, 4.8GT/s Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB), USES: Virtual PC (and doing software development within Virtual PC) A little bit of video editing Desktop software (like Outlook, Quickbooks, etc.) I think #1 is faster, but wanted feedback from other folks here.     I have a bunch of programming projects on my P:\ drive (on Windows 7) I'm now doing some programming within Virtual PC Windows XP Mode and I'd like to "call" that drive, within the Win XP guest, the P: drive. I've mapped drive letter P: to "network" drive on the Host but that goes across the network so it's very slow. I tried using the SUBST command but it wouldn't take the \tsclients\p as a parameter. Basically, the command line interpreter (is that DOS on Win 7 ??) doesn't recognize that directory (\tsclients\p)

  • What's the easiest way for a musician to make clips of their music freely availalbe?

    I'm helping (pro bono) a really cool musician make samples of his music available so folks can share it. Essentially "shareware" for his music. Surely someone must have done this before.   • Suggestions for a good under-drawer keyboard tray?

    I'm looking for a good keyboard tray that would attach to my desk drawer (one of the old metal SteelCase desks). Criteria: Stable and solid (we had one that wiggled and it drove me crazy). Allows the drawer to move in and out. Easy installation would be nice. Inexpensive (<$100) would be nice, but I'll consider expensive ones if they meet all of the above.

  • Is there an IE8 setting for "minimum font size" to display?

    When I look at our website in IE8 the text we have set to display smaller doesn't display smaller. But when I use BrowserShots.org it shows IE8 renderings with the smaller text appropriately smaller. So I'm thinking that there must be some setting in IE8 for "minimum font size to display". It's not the the TextSize (set to Medium) or Zoom setting (I set/reset zoom to 100%). It's something else. Any ideas?

  • How to re-enable Autoplay for removeable drives on Windows 7

    When I plug a USB thumb drive into my Win7 PC, it no longer auto-launches the window giving me options like "Import Photos" or "browse". The drive is recognized but nothing autolaunches. Similarly, CD's don't autoplay either. I verified that Win7 is set to autoplay, per method 1 and 2 of: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/27544-autoplay-enable-disable-autorun.html FYI, there is a similar question (but for Windows XP) here on SU.

  • Anyone tried boosting Windows performance by putting Swap File on a Flash drive?

    Windows Vista introduced ReadyBoost which lets you use a Flash drive as a third (after RAM and HD) type of memory. It occurred to me that I could boost peformance on an old PC here w/ Win XP (32 bit, max'd at 4GB RAM) by putting it's swap file (page file) on a flash drive. (Now, before anyone comments: apparently Flash drives (10-30MB/s transfer rates) are slower than HDD (100+ MB/s) (I'm asking that as a separate question on this forum).

  • Can you password protect access to a directory (to local and networked PCs) in Windows XP Pro?

    I could just compress the directory as a .zip file w/ a password (which I think would just look like a compressed folder w/ a password) but I'd like something with less overhead (i.e., none of the decompression, etc.) Any ideas? Clarification/update: I'd like to have anyone be able to access it from another computer if they know the password. I.e., I don't want them to have to log in as a different user, etc., but, rather just enter a password.

  • Why can't I set Windows 7 folder to Writeable?

    Moved a SATA HD from one PC to another. Copied almost all the files from old drive to new, except for one folder ("oldFolder") and it's subfolders and files. I tried to copy just a single file (to simplify things): Can't copy that file to same directory. (get above error) CAN copy file to Desktop. Can not copy files' container folder to Desktop. Under Properties for that OldFolder: Read Only is Checked. Security: Everyone set to Allow everything except "special permissions" All users are set to allow WRITE.

  • Element 'Chart' is not a known element - dotnetCHARTING

    Hi, I am using dotnetCHARTING: the dll is installed in the GAC and referenced in my web.config (all versions appear to match). The project has a reference to the dll. web.config: <add assembly="dotnetCHARTING, Version=5.3.3540.17054, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=af2cd47db69d93bd"/> The site code compiles ok, but all aspx pages using the charting library complain that the Chart tag does not exist (warning that it might be a compile error). The aspx pages do not render the charts. Each page has a reference to the assembly: <%@ Register Assembly="dotnetCHARTING" Namespace="dotnetCHARTING" TagPrefix="dotnetCHARTING" %> Does anybody know what could be causing this?   • Why can't I see the 'dataset project' property in Visual Studio DataSet designer?

    Hi, I am trying to follow 'n tier app design' tutorials and they tell me to set the DataSet Project property from the Data Set Designer in VS, to split table adaptors and entities into seprate projects. I can't see that property! (I'm looking in the same place shown on the videos... all other properties match) Does anybody know why?     Hi, I have an ASP.NET app that sits on our intranet, using the WindowsIdentity to identify the user: WindowsIdentity wi = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity as WindowsIdentity; if (wi == null || wi.Name == null) { noAccess("No WindowsIdentity"); return; } string username = wi.Name; if (username.Contains("\\")) username = username.Substring(username.LastIndexOf("\\") + 1); This works fine on our Intranet. However, when users from other offices (separate network, with firewall open) they get a password request input box. Why are they getting the password dialogue? What is the recommended way identify users of the app? I want to avoid using password, but windows identities. Anyone attempting to access the application is inside a trusted network.
