• After the update today no graphical interface anymore - 12.04

  I installed the updates through the update manager today. I shut down my Laptop and now after starting it up again, I only get terminal access to advices. Grub is loading fine and after I picked Ubuntu 12.04 the screen get blank and I am asked to log in with my username and password in command line mode. If I log in I am still in command line mode. How do I get the "normal (graphical)" Ubuntu back? I hope you know what I mean. Since English is not my first language I can't explain this the way I would like to. Mark

• Bumblebee stopped working after the today's update

  I've followed this guide to put Bumblebee to work. Everything was working perfect and I was happy playing my Steam games using primusrun to run them. But after today's update, which updated something related to NVIDIA, Bumblebee is not working anymore: $ primusrun glxgears 2014/06/01 02:36:36 socat[4154] E connect(3, AF=1 "/var/run/bumblebee.socket", 27): No such file or directory primus: fatal: failed to connect to Bumblebee daemon: No such file or directory I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, I have an optimus notebook with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 730M and an integrated Intel card. Could someone help me, please?

• No user/password boxes on login screen after updates today (June 30, 2012)

  Just installed today's batch of updates, including new kernel 3.2.0-26 and rebooted. Now the screen just has a logo in the middle and "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" in bottom left corner, but no box to choose which user to log in as, or to enter a password. CTRL-ALT-F1 gets me to a "login:" prompt, and I can log in - but I have no idea what to look at to find out what is wrong, or to fix this. Tried older kernels and recovery mode for current kernel - no joy, still no way to log into the graphics console.

• Try out Windows Phone 7 on your PC today

  Anticipation has been building for the new Windows Phone 7 Series ever since Microsoft unveiled it at the Mobile World Congress in February.  Now, thanks to free developer tools, you can get a first-hand experience of the basic Windows Phone 7 Series devices on your PC. Windows Phone 7 Series represents a huge change in the mobile field for Microsoft, bringing the acclaimed Zune HD UI to an innovative phone platform.  Windows Mobile has often been criticized for being behind other Smartphone platforms, but Microsoft seeks to regain the lead with this new upcoming release.  A platform must have developers behind it to be useful, so they have released a full set of free development tools so anyone can make apps for it today.  Or, if you simply want to play with Windows Phone 7, you can use the included emulator to try out the new Metro UI.  Here’s how to do this today on your Vista or 7 computer. Please note: These tools are a Customer Technology Preview release, so only install them if you’re comfortable using pre-release software. Getting Started First, download the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (link below), and run the installer.  This will install the Customer Technology Preview (CTP) versions of Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone Emulator, Silverlight for Windows Phone, and XNA 4.0 Game Studio on your computer, all of which are required and cannot be installed individually. Accept the license agreement when prompted. Click “Install Now” to install the tools you need.  The only setup customization option is where to save the files, so choose Customize if you need to do so. Setup will now automatically download and install the components you need, and will additionally download either 32 or 64 bit programs depending on your operating system. About halfway thorough the installation, you’ll be prompted to reboot your system.  Once your computer is rebooted, setup will automatically resume without further input.   When setup is finished, click “Run the Product Now” to get started. Running Windows Phone 7 on your PC Now that you’ve got the Windows Phone Developer tools installed, it’s time to get the Windows Phone emulator running.  If you clicked “Run the Product Now” when the setup finished, Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone should have already started.   If not, simply enter “visual studio” in your start menu search and select “Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone”. Now, to run the Windows Phone 7 emulator, we have to test an application.  So, even if you don’t know how to program, we can open a phone application template, and then test it to run the emulator.  First, click New Project on the left hand side of the front page. Any of the application templates would work for this, but here let’s select “Windows Phone Application”, and then click Ok. Here’s your new application template, which already contains the basic phone application framework.  This is where you’d start if you want to develop a Windows Phone app, but for now we just want to see Windows Phone 7 in action. So, to run the emulator, click Debug in the menu and then select Start Debugging. Your new application will launch inside the Windows Phone 7 Series emulator.  The default template doesn’t give us much, but it does show an example application running in Windows Phone 7.   Exploring Windows Phone 7 Click the Windows button on the emulator to go to the home screen.  Notice the Zune HD-like transition animation.  The emulator only includes Internet Explorer, your test application, and a few settings. Click the arrow on the right to see the available applications in a list. Settings lets you change the theme, regional settings, and the date and time in your emulator.  It also has an applications settings pane, but this currently isn’t populated. The Time settings shows a unique Windows Phone UI. You can return to the home screen by pressing the Windows button.  Here’s the Internet Explorer app running, with the virtual keyboard open to enter an address.  Please note that this emulator can also accept input from your keyboard, so you can enter addresses without clicking on the virtual keyboard. And here’s Google running in Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone 7 supports accelerometers, and you can simulate this in the emulator.  Click one of the rotate buttons to rotate the screen in that direction. Here’s our favorite website in Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7 in landscape mode. All this, running right inside your Windows 7 desktop… Developer tools for Windows Phone 7 Although it may be fun to play with the Windows Phone 7 emulator, developers will be more excited to actually be able to create new and exciting apps for it.  The Windows Phone Developer Tools download includes Visual Studio Express and XNA Game Studio 4.0 which lets you create enticing games and apps for Windows Phones.  All development for Windows Phones will be in C#, Silverlight, and the XNA game framework.  Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone includes templates for these, and additionally has code samples to help you get started with development. Conclusion Many features are still not functional in this preview version, such as the search button and most of the included applications.  However, this still gives you a great way to experience firsthand the future of the Windows Phone platform.  And, for developers, this is your chance to set your mark on the Windows Phone 7 Series even before it is released to the public.  Happy playing and developing! • Using HTML5 Today part 2&ndash;Fixing Semantic tags with a Shiv

For the definitive discussion on unknown elements and the HTML5 Shiv check out Mark Pilgrim’s Dive Into HTML5 online book at http://diveintohtml5.info/semantics.html#unknown-elements Semantic tags increase the meaning and maintainability of your markup, help make your page more computer-readable, and can even provide opportunities for libraries that are written to automagically enhance content using standard tags like <nav>, <header>,  or <footer>. Legacy IE issues However, new HTML5 tags get mangled in IE browsers prior to version 9.  To see this in action, consider this bit of HTML code which includes the new <article> and <header> elements: Viewing this page using the IE9 developer tools (F12) we see that the browser correctly models the hierarchy of tags listed above: But if we switch to IE8 Browser Mode in developer tools things go bad: Did you know that a closing tag could close itself?? The browser loses the hierarchy & closes all of the new tags.  The new tags become unusable and the page structure falls apart. Additionally block-level elements lose their block status, appearing as inline.    The Fix (good) The block-level issue can be resolved by using CSS styling.  Below we set the article, header, and footer tags as block tags. article, header, footer {display:block;} You can avoid the unknown element issue by creating a version of the element in JavaScript before the actual HTML5 tag appears on the page: <script> document.createElement("article"); document.createElement("header"); document.createElement("footer"); </script> The Fix (better) Rather than adding your own JS you can take advantage of a standard JS library such as Remy Sharp’s HTML5 Shiv at http://code.google.com/p/html5shiv/.  By default the Modernizr library includes HTML5 Shiv, so you don’t need to include the shiv code separately if you are using Modernizr.

• Why isn't DSM for unstructured memory done today?

  Ages ago, Djikstra invented IPC through mutexes which then somehow led to shared memory (SHM) in multics (which afaik had the necessary mmap first). Then computer networks came up and DSM (distributed SHM) was invented for IPC between computers. So DSM is basically a not prestructured memory region (like a SHM) that magically get's synchronized between computers without the applications programmer taking action. Implementations include Treadmarks (inofficially dead now) and CRL. But then someone thought this is not the right way to do it and invented Linda & tuplespaces. Current implementations include JavaSpaces and GigaSpaces. Here, you have to structure your data into tuples. Other ways to achieve similar effects may be the use of a relational database or a key-value-store like RIAK. Although someone might argue, I don't consider them as DSM since there is no coherent memory region where you can put data structures in as you like but have to structure your data which can be hard if it is continuous and administration like locking can not be done for hard coded parts (=tuples, ...). Why is there no DSM implementation today or am I just unable to find one?

• Windows Azure v1.7 Spring Release Today&ndash;New Management Dashboard

  Today, Microsoft will be publicly releasing a new version of Azure for public consumption.  The web conference, at http://www.meetwindowsazure.com will be airing at 1 PM PST.  They have already released an update to the Service Dashboard that can be accessed by going to http://manage.windowsazure.com.  I have some images of the new dashboard here that I have gathered and removed any PII from.  Let me know what you think! Images You should be able to click any of the images for a full resolution image. Tutorial The first thing you get after signing in is the tutorial: Landing After the tutorial completes, you get a screen with services that are active on your account on the left, and a list of ALL services (db/blob/SQL Azure) on the right.  I like the quick access to services across any of my subscriptions: Service Information These are images from a running web site with several roles.  I love how easy they have made many of the features: SQL Azure They have given some great quick functionality for looking at your DB information: Storage Here is the basic information that they give you for any storage accounts you have: Adding Services Super quick and easy to add services with the new UI: Conclusion I am EXCITED!  As you may have seen in the left side of my blog, I am an MCPD in Azure Development, and I must say that I am excited to see Microsoft moving forward with the technology and not letting it stagnate.  After as much as I have fought the other Azure dashboard, I like the friendliness and fluidity of this one. The important thing to note about ALL of the images above: this is HTML, not Silverlight.  The responsiveness is FAST on all of the actions I completed, and I believe that this is a big step forward for Azure… So, what do you think?

• Meet Peter, 80 years old today

  You have to arrive at the office early in the morning to meet Peter. He arrives at 5am and by 8:30am he's gone. Peter has been a cleaner here for several years. He is 80 years old today. Peter was born only a couple of km from our office in Cambridge, England and was for many years an Engineer for Pye Electronics. I'm lucky enough to arrive in the office early enough to catch Peter, dressed smarter than most of us in shirt and tie, and he tells stories of how Cambridge was years ago. He says the site of our office is on land between what would have been a prisoner of war camp (camp 1025), and a few hundred metres North, a camp of American allies. In February 1944, Peter was 13 years old. One night, a Dornier Do 217 heavy bomber heading towards London was hit by anti-aircraft fire and the crew of four parachuted from the plane. The plane however, continued on autopilot for over 50km. Gradually dropping lower and lower, narrowly missing the spires of Cambridge, it eventually came to land, largely intact, in allotment gardens by Peter's house near Milton Road. He told me that he was quick to the scene, along with some other young lads, and grabbed parts of the plane as souvenirs. It's one of many tales that Peter recounts, but I happened to discover a chapter about this particular plane crash in a history book called the War Torn Skies of Great Britain by Julian Evan-Hart. It reads: 'It slid to a halt in the allotment gardens of Milton Road. The industrial estate the other side was the site of a farm, Trinity Hall Farm, as recently as 60 years ago. Roman rings and Palaeolithic handaxes have been unearthed nearby. I suppose Peter will be one of the last people I'll ever hear talking first-hand about Cambridge during the war. It's a privilege to know him. Happy birthday Peter.

• Challenge: Learn One New Thing Today

  Most of us know that there's a lot to learn. I'm teaching a class this morning, and even on the subject where I'm the "expert" (that word always makes me nervous!) I still have a lot to learn. To learn, sometimes I take a class, read a book, or carve out a large chunk of time so that I can fully grasp the subject. But since I've been working, I really don't have a lot of opportunities to do that. Like you, I'm really busy. So what I've been able to learn is to take just a few moments each day and learn something new about SQL Server. I thought I would share that process here. First, I started with an outline of the product. You can use Books Online, a college class syllabus, a training class outline, or a comprehensive book table of contents. Then I checked off the things I felt I knew a little about. Sure, I'll come back around to those, but I want to be as efficient as I can. I then trolled various checklists to see what I needed to know about the subjects I didn't have checked off. From there (I'm doing all this in a notepad, and then later in OneNote when that came out) I developed a block of text for that subject. Every time I ran across a book, article, web site or recording on that topic I wrote that reference down. Later I went back and quickly looked over those resources and tried to figure out how I could parcel it out - 10 minutes for this one, a free seminar (like the one I'm teaching today - ironic) takes 4 hours, a web site takes an hour to grok, that sort of thing.  Then all I did was figure out how much time each day I'll give to training. Sure, it literally may be ten minutes, but it adds up. One final thing - as I used something I learned, I came back and made notes in that topic. You learn to play the piano not just from a book, but by playing the piano, after all. If you don't use what you learn, you'll lose it. So if you're interested in getting better at SQL Server, and you're willing to do a little work, try out this method. • Planning Bulletin for JRE 7: What EBS Customers Can Do Today

  An initiative to certify Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 desktop clients is underway.  We have tested EBS 11.5.10.2, 12.0, and 12.1 with JRE 7. We have fixes for nearly all of the compatibility issues now, and are working hard to produce the remaining fixes quickly. A. When will JRE 7 be certified with Oracle E-Business Suite? We will announce the certification of the E-Business Suite with JRE 7 once all fixes are available, verified, and documented.  Certification announcements will be distributed through My Oracle Support, My Oracle Support Community Forums, Oracle Technology Network Forums, newsletters, and user group news outlets. Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates.  In addition to the standard communication channels listed above, customers are encouraged to monitor or subscribe to this blog.    B. What can customers do to prepare for the JRE 7 certification? Customers should ensure that they are on the latest available JRE 6 update. Of the compatibility issues identified so far with JRE 7, the most critical is an issue that prevents E-Business Suite Forms-based products from launching on Windows desktops that are running JRE 7.  Customers can prevent this issue today by ensuring that they have applied the latest certified patches documented for JRE 6 configurations to their EBS application tier servers: Apply Forms patch 14615390 to EBS 11i environments (Note 125767.1) Apply Forms patch 14614795 to EBS 12.0 and 12.1 environments (Note 437878.1) These patches are compatible with JRE 6 and 7, production ready, and fully-tested with the E-Business Suite.  These patches may be applied immediately to all E-Business Suite environments. All other Forms prerequisites documented in the Notes above should also be applied now. C. What else will be required by the final certified configuration? Oracle expects that all other compatibility issues will be resolved by installing a specific JRE 7 release, at minimum.  That specific release has not been finalized yet, and this is subject to change. D.  Where will the official patch requirements be documented? • Blank desktop after updates today, only unity2d works now [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears I have been using 12.04 (wubi) since a week now and this is my 1st exposure to linux. Everything was going on fine till now , but today as soon as I updated through the update manager , docky gave a message that compositing is required or something, and i got an error window which asked me to report the error and then the update manager asked me to reboot. After rebooting , i just get a blank desktop screen , no launcher, no toolbar. I have to restart with the power key. However if i login through Unity 2d everything is fine except the benefits of the 3d environment. I guess something got messed up after the update and i cant figure out which program or file caused this mess. I would highly appreciate if someone could help me out with this as I really liked working on ubuntu after windows 7. Thanks! SOLVED-- Thanks @jrg for the link provided.. it helped me to come out of this mess. Actually some update of compizconfig made the unity plugin inactive did something to the Animation add ons , the one which you use for the burn effect etc. What i did was : On the blank desktop Pressed keys Ctrl + Alt + T to bring up the terminal and typed ccsm This brought up the compiz config system manager, there i enabled the unity plugin and rebooted. Everything started working fine. But then again when i started the addons plugin ,everything went back to square one.. :( . This time pressing Ctrl + Alt + T also did not help. Then i tried Ctrl + Alt + F1 , it brought up a terminal or whatever u call it, and then i typed unity --reset , it did some resetting and in the end it showed some comositing done , I pressed Ctrl + Alt + F7 to come back to the desktop , and here it was , my old sweet desktop.. it had the animation effects too like wobbly windows, excepting the addons like the burn effect, i guess something got wrong with the last update of that addon plugin and now whenever i try turning that on , everything goes poof!! 6 hours wasted , but i guess i learnt something new.. not bad for an orthodontist i guess :))
