• windows 2003 remote desktop fail connect after windows update

  I have a number of windows servers, both win2003, win2003r2 and win2003r2 64 bit. After installing windows updates on the machines and rebooting terminal services give me an immediate "not connect" message. The servers are running fine and you can connect via the physical machine. Once you reboot the box (with remote restart in some cases when it's not accessible) terminal services behaves itself and allows a connection. Whilst it's not a show stopper it is rather annoying when you can't see your box. Anyone know why this is or what the cause is?

  Hello sysadmins, We use Siemens Step7 and SCL for PLC programming in our company. I recently got to install Windows 7 and had yet to find out that the Siemens software suite doesn't install anymore. - Which is a pain... Checking through the setup files, I found following entries in the Setups.ini file: [OS] PlattformIDAllowed=1;2 WinXP=True WinXPExclude=0,Home,1 WinXPWarning=1 WinNETServer=True WinNETServerExclude=Home,0,1 WinNETServerWarning=Home,0,1 Win2003=1 Win2003Exclude=Home,0,1 Win2003Warning=Home,0,1 Win2003R2=1 Win2003R2Exclude=0,1 Win2003R2Warning=0,1 WinVista=1 Win2008=1 Win7=1 I added the last line to try things out and it still provides me the same error..   I face problem with upgrading IE8 related to JAVA. The problem only with IE8, IE7 is OK and I have the latest Java version. After I upgrade the IE8, the graphics which has dynamics reading from the server is not updating and it shows NaN. I tried the following : - upgrade the server win2003 with latest Java version(JRE and JDT) , but the problem still exist in cliend PC(XP). -I upgraded the server IE8, then all user lost the connection even from inside the server. then I recall the prev version IE7.

Now I can do it as follows: 1.connecting from hostA to hostB by RDP logon and there: 2.start putty client. • Windows 2003 Cluster: Failover Delay

  I am testing the failover policies of our test failover cluster system. When I shutdown the node who is currently controlling the cluster (NODE1), it takes about 2 mins and 40 seconds before the next node on the preferred list (NODE2) takes control of the cluster. I tried changing the looksAlive and isAlive interval to 5000ms to all resources, but that didn't help. Looking at the Event Viewer of the remaining nodes, it shows that it was almost instantly detected that NODE1 was down. But it took another ~2:40 minutes for it to be removed from the live cluster list and for NODE2 to take over. Is there anyway of changing or shortening this "failover delay"? • Enabling Multiple Monitor Support from Terminal Services/Remote Desktop over Citrix

  Our Remote Desktop/Terminal Services solution where I work relies on Citrix for machines not connected via the VPN. We're using Citrix Xen server (I'm pretty sure) and I'm going to try to connect to a Windows 7 Host (my work computer) and I think the RDC client runs on a Win2003 host (exposed via Citrix). Is it possible to take advantage of Windows 7 multiple monitor support for RDC with this setup? Would I need to try getting my Citrix guys to have a different host machine for the RDC (Win2008, or Win7?)? I'm probably going to connect using the OS X Citrix client, but I'd be willing to BootCamp/Fusion up a Windows instance to work remotely, as well. I really want to be able to use multiple monitors remotely. It does "span" multiple montiors currently (I have a 3000x1024 desktop, for example) but I'd rather it be "true" multiple monitor instead of one giant desktop, if possible.

• Installing Wordpress - constant PHP/MySQL extension appears missing

  I've got Win2003 w/IIS6, PHP 5 and MySQL installed. I can confirm PHP is installed correctly because I have a testMe.php that runs properly. When I run the Wordpress setup, I get informed that Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress. But in my PHP.ini in the DYNAMIC EXTENSIONS section I have extension=php_mysql.dll extension=php_mysqli.dll I verified that mysql.dll and libmysql.dll are both in my PHP directory. I copied my libmysql.dll to the C:\Windows\System32 directory. When I try to run the initial setup for WordPress, I get this answer. I've Googled setting this up, and everything comes down to the above. I'm missing something, but none of the instructions that I've found online seem to cover whatever that is.

• Basic Exchange Deployment Question

  I have come into a situation where I need to deploy a new Exchange server at a small company. I haven't dealt with the newest version of Exchange (2010) yet, but am familiar with 2003 and 2007. The site is currently running one Exchange 2003 server, which hosts about 100 mailboxes. We have new hardware for an additional server, and this is where I need some advice. Should I install Exchange 2010 on the new hardware and leave the older server as-is? Do I upgrade the old server and use it as a bridgehead or replication partner (there is nothing wrong with it other than it is a few years old and running Win2003/Exchange2003)? Can I leave the older 2003 server alone with only the POP mailboxes on it, and will it peacefully co-exist with the new server? Any advice is very appreciated!

  I am trying to remove an obsolete SID (the account was apparently deleted). I've tried to run the following on the server (win2003) and a client (win7): icacls c:\path /remove *S-1-5-21-1883347182-1220252494-433279356-1095 /T But I always get the output Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 0 files without it doing anything. How can I get it to work? Update: I've used AccessEnum to get the SID because icacls only says "No mapping between account names and security IDs was done." but doesn't show the sid. • IIS in VirtualBox serving files from shared Ubuntu folder

  Here's the problem: I want to use Ubuntu. But I need to develop ASP.NET (MVC) sites. So I setup VirtualBox with Win2003 and IIS6. But I would prefer my working files to be located in my Ubuntu home folder. So I setup shared folder in VirtualBox and make IIS6 virtual directory work from there. The problem is, IIS6 can't do this. Whatever I try (mapped drive, network uri path) I get different IIS errors: can't access folder (for mapped drive), can't monitor file system changes (\vboxsvr share path), and so on. Is there a way for IIS6 in virtual machine to configure virtual application folder to be on host machine (Ubuntu) - be it shared folder, mapped drive, smb share, or whatever?

• How do internal smtp servers send mail to internal mail servers on the network?

  We have upgraded our internal corporate email server and the IP address has changed internal to our network. A second email server is used for sending bulk jobs for a mailing list service that we offer. Since the switch of the internal corporate server IP we have been seeing problems when the bulk email server is trying to send email to our own domain. The log shows that it is still trying to hit the old corporate server instead of the new one. I have looked through all settings for the bulk email software and see nothing set there to send to internal mail servers, and I do not recall doing anything special to get this working when setup a couple years ago. Is there a setting in Win2003 or on the network that enables the mapping of MX record external IPs to internal IPs so mail gets routed correctly?

  I have a certain problem. I am working on an Ubuntu machine, but I have to use a windows 2003 server guest to connect to a Stonegate VPN to be able to manage our client's website. I have already asked if I could connect to a Stonegate VPN in Ubuntu, but so far got no answer. And I couldn't connect to it using network manager's strongswan plugin. So I want to use my guest Win2003 as a gateway to be able to SSH to the remote server. Is that possible? • Having trouble getting startup scripts to work in Server 2003

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am having trouble getting my startup scripts to run correctly on the domain I am administering. Before anyone gets upset and says "go read xxx article from microsoft",... I have. I am simply missing something or not understanding it properly. I understand how to assign the script, what I am curious about is where exactly it should be placed in the Windows folder structure. I have been able to get them to work by creating a share folder called "scripts" and pointing to that exact unc pathname IE \servername\scripts\xxx.bat. However, I would like to do it properly, would someone please tell me where they should be placed in Win2003 server, and what the path name should be when assigning a group policy to do something that applies to computer specific properties? Your assistance is very much appreciated by a junior admin trying to learn some new tricks!

The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option.   My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2?   Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

  We have some students who have figured out how to rotate the screen using either the hotkey combination or right click context menu. It's easy to fix but it's time consuming because no matter how many times I tell people how to fix it there's always someone that will come up to me. Now I need two things. First, is there a way to disable screen rotation? Second, I need a script to reset the screen resolution to normal on logon and logoff. The solutions need to be able to be deployed from a Win2003 server to WinXP clients. I have way too many computers to go through by hand to uncheck enable hot keys on the intel control panel.

• SCSI driver installation trouble

  I tried to install the driver of Adaptec 39320A-Ultra 320 SCSI card in Win2003 Server R2 SP2 in a DELL PowerEdge 2950 Server. I selected the driver from the list of drivers present in windows. But it says that the device could not be started(Code 10). I tried to put the card in a system that already had the driver installed. It worked fine. So there is no problem with the hardware. I even tried downloading the driver from the manufacturer website. When I try to select install from path and install that driver, it tell no matching driver found. When I install the default driver from windows, it shows the card in SCSI group of device manager, but with an ! symbol. Also the device ID in driver details was different from that of the one present in other system where it insalled fine. Any suggessions to solve it?

  A Windows Server 2003 machine died recently but I need some information that was contained in the now-defunct server's registry. I have a "System State" backup file created by the Windows Server 2003 built-in backup program (NTBackup.exe). Is there any way to extract a key/value out of the backup file? I might be able do a Win2003 install on a similar machine then do a system-state restore but that's a lot of effort and I don't know for certain that the system-state restore will work on a different spec machine. (Would it work if I booted up in 'safe mode'?) But I'd really rather just get at the data straight out of the NTBackup file zip-file-esque styles if that's possible.

• Error 1069 the service did not start due to a logon failure

  Our CruiseControl.NET service on Win2003 Server (VMWare Virtual) was recently changed from a service account to a user account to allow for a new part of our build process to work. The new user has "Log on as a service" rights, verified by checking Local Security Settings - Local Policies - User Rights Assignment, and the user password is set to never expire. The problem I'm facing is every time the service is restarted, I get the 1069 error as described in this questions subject. I have to go into the properties of the service (log on tab) and re-enter the password, even though it hasn't changed, and the user already has the appropriate rights. Once I enter the password apply the changes, a prompt appears telling me that the user has been granted log on as a service rights. The service will then start will no problems. Not a show stopper, but a pain none-the-less. Why isn't the password persisting with the service?
