How can I get 2560 * 1600 on Win 7 ? MacBook Pro 17 + Dell 30 inch 3008 WFP + Fusion 3

I run VM Ware Fusion 3 on a Mac Book Pro 17 hooked to a Dell 30 inch screen I CAN manage to get a Resolution of 2560 * 1600 on Mac OS X(MacBook Pro), but can't on Win 7 (on the exact same MacBook Pro) The highest resolution I can get on MS Win 7 is 2048 * 1536 (and I want to be able to set it to 2560 * 1600 to fully enjoy the real estate of my 30 inch screen!) I have searched the KB, and found an article which mentionned that I should add the following lines in the vmx file (which I did) The lines are the very bottom of the vmx file svga.maxWidth = "2560" svga.maxHeight = "1600" svga.vramSize = "16384000" KB Article : http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1003&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=63746028&stateId=0%200%2066741566 I did the manipulation describe in the KB above however, I rebooted several times, but I still can't get the correct resolution to show in Windows

VMWare tools on Ubuntu Server 10.10 kernel source problem

After install and running the vm-ware config, the config needs my kernel headers to compile some modules, ok, so I'll give it them, but it just won't work. It asks for the path of the directory of C header files that match my running kernel. If I uname -r I get 2.6.35-22-generic-pae So I tell it the source path is /lib/modules/2.6.25-22-generic-pae/build/include and it returns "The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.35-22-generic-pae). ..I'm confused? can anyone offer suggestions please? I installed hte kernel source andh eaders myself using sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Strange behavior of excel 2007 on WinXP

I'm on a machine that had quite some bloat ware and no update in ages. I made all the updates, removed the bloatware and cleaned using ccleaner. So far so good. Now excel shows some really strange behavior when I open .xls files through windows. The current behavior is: it opens a new excel process window which will then stay empty. One has then to drag the xls file into the window to open it. I would like to restore the default behavior. So far I have tried: running the Microsoft Office Diagnosis copied excel related registry keys from a machine with working excel and imported them had a look into the registry entry for .xls files myself - which seems correct. It was of no use and I'm out of ideas. I would try to avoid a reinstall as we have a very bureaucratic IT department and the machine then would be gone for some undetermined time period. So any idea what to do would be great.

Hearing repeated sound in Linux mint Chrome Browser

I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some repetition in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . Not able to access other machines on network

Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

Internet addicted, need software to control my usage and block access

I found I have problem to be a little addictive with surfing on internet. I am trying to find a free ware, (or software), that can help me for exemple to be just 2 hours per day on internet. Like it is counting the minutes and than stop working. not just 2 hours in one time, but in whole day.... maybe that it has different modes (2hours together, in whole day, 2hours + little reserve time) but I need something that really take me away access from internet :) Just counting time, is not enough for me :) Hope we will find something because, I just can't avoid not to loose 4 hours on internet. How can I add a favicon to a bookmarklet in Google Chrome?

I'm on OS X and I want my bookmarklets to have favicons. I already found two articles but they didn't help much: http://www.tapper-ware.net/blog/?p=97#comment-2076 It's a great article but as I understand it this doesn't seem to work for Chrome :( http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/3032/google_chrome_how_to_change_icons_on_the_bookmarks_bar/ The problem with this tipp is - if I'm wrong, then please correct me - that after I cleaned the history, the cache, etc. the whole thing will be gone again. If there is a chance to modify the bookmarklets by hosting them myself I'd instantly do it, but I found no solution so far.

Problem with Ctrl key on a hp 2510p

I have a tricky problem with my corporate Compaq hp 2510p, the ctrl key is not working properly at all times. I belive that it is hooked in some filter chain that processes certain ctrl+[key] combinations which is very annoying. I would like some pointers on how to proceed when analysing what application/setup can can cause this kind of keyboard filtering to happen. Anyway some more background info: Ctrl works together with X, C, V. Both in editors and terminals (Ctrl-C, Z etc) but Ctrl-Shift-Esc and Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work. Very annoying so my only option for logging in us using HP's security app. Shift-Arrow works for selecting text, but not Ctrl-shift arrow to select word by word, but Ctrl-Arrow works when moving the caret word by word. Now the strange thing is that everything works ok with an external USB keyboard so it might be the driver, but still, google yields 0 when searching for the problem description. I have vm-ware player installed (but not running it), HP Protect Tools installed, if any of these could affect the keyboard driver.

Where do dsrm, dsadd and dsmove come from?

I am writing a script to join a machine to the domain after it has been imaged. (Don't want to do it in Sysprep.) On the machine I am writing the script on (a battered, world weary IT workhorse with all sorts of crud on it) my script works fine. However on one of my shiny new test machines, it doesn't find dsrm and dsadd. I can only assume I have inadvertently installed this on my machine in the past. I want these to be used just for the purpose of joining the machines to the domain, so don't want any full blown admin-ware installed. Where do I get / turn on dsrm etc?

vmware takes too much time to shut down

Each time I shuting down my virtual machine - it takes like 30 minutes for VM Ware to complete the process. The shut down is done, but it shows a black screen and doesn't respond to any command. I can't do a Power Power OFF or Power Suspend. When I click it - nothing changes. When trying to close - it says "still busy". This happens only when using a Virtual Machine stored on an external hard drive. When Virtual Machine files are stored on a local drive - everything is OK. Hard drive is working good. Any suggestions how can I investigate the issue?

strange memory usage pattern on windows server 2008 on login through remote desktop..

I'm running Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Service Pack 2 on a VM Ware instance with 10Gb ram allocated. I'm not running IIS or SQL Server. Under 'normal' conditions, the machine uses ~5.5Gb of memory. However, when I login to the server through remote desktop, the memory usage slowly climbs up to 9.8Gb of memory in use. After several minutes the memory slowly creeps back down to the 5.5Gb mark. I've tried killing all the processes associated with my login, on login, barring the taskmanager without success, and I can't see any process that is growing in memory usage when the memory is increasing. I'm assuming this is some system level cache that is growing / shrinking... but why is it doing this?

Recently we moved all the images and other static files(scripts & css) of Tech Dreams to Amazon S3 to reduce load on VPS server. Amazon S3 is cheap, but monthly bill will shoot up if images/static files of the blog are not cached properly (more details). By adding caching HTTP Headers Cache-Control or Expires to all the files hosted on Amazon S3 we reduced the monthly bills and also load time of blog pages. Lets see how to add custom headers to files stored on Amazon S3 service. Updating HTTP Headers of one file at a time The web interface of Amazon S3 Management console allows adding custom HTTP headers to one file at a time through “Properties” window (to access properties, right on a file and select Properties menu). So if you have to add headers to 100s of files then this is not the way to go! Updating HTTP Headers of multiple files of a folder recursively To update HTTP headers of multiple files in a folder recursively, we can use CloudBerry Explorer freeware or Bucket Explorer trail ware applications. CloudBerry is my favourite as it’s a freeware and also it’s has excellent interface to access Amazon S3 from desktops. Adding HTTP Headers with CloudBerry application is straight forward – right click on the required folders and choose the option “Set HTTP Headers”. How do "custom software companies" deal with technical debt?

What are "custom software companies"? By "custom software companies" I mean companies that make their money primarily from building custom, one off, bits of software. Example are agencies or middle-ware companies, or contractors/consultants like Redify. What's the opposite of "custom software companies"? The oposite of the above business model are companies that focus on long term products, whether they be deployable desktop/mobile apps, or SaaS software. A sure fire way to build up technical debt: I work for a company that attempts to focus on a suite of SaaS products. However, due to certain constraints we sometimes end up bending to the will of certain clients and we end building bits of custom software that can only be used for that client. This is a sure fire way to incur technical debt. Now we have a bit of software to maintain that adds nothing to our core product. If custom work is a sure fire way to build technical debt, how do agencies handle it? So that got me thinking. Companies who don't have a core product as the center of their business model, well they're always doing custom software work. How do they cope with the notion of technical debt? How does it not drive them into technical bankruptcy?

Going on 15 months for me...

About 5 face to face interviews, 4 telephone ones and except for the two weeks Census Job. But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+ and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing). Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study. I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon. I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job. I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on. Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test. As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

SDcardReader/Writer is not connected

My IOGEAR sdCardReader/Writer is recongized on Ubutu(by using VM ware) but when I tried to connect to "Removable Devices - Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" , the follwoing message is appeared. " The connection for the USB device "Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" was unsuccessful. The device is currently in use. " But I think it is not used. Should I use IOGEAR driver for this one? When I connect the card reader, Ubuntu automatically got the "Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" . How can I fix the problem? SEO consideration for duplicate sites

I am building a brochure-ware website for a company that sells products all across the world. They need the site to ask the user what region they are in before using the site; there are 5 regions. This is because there are different products offered to different regions and each region may or may not want to customize their own content. However, at launch and likely forever, most of the pages will be the exact same minus what is listed in the footer and in the product selection menu. My question is how should I structure the sitemap for this site for best SEO? Should I be concerned with duplicate content penalties and/or cannibalizing the site's presence on the SERP? Some considerations: The client wants to be able to print links directly to regional specific content bypassing any prompt for the user to select a region (to ensure they land on the target page). The client cannot have a 'default' region so the user must have a region specified "Clean" urls are important, but there is wiggle room The client does not want each region to have its own domain There will be a link on the page to allow users to specify a different region The client is not concerned with localization ...at this time Some products are available in multiple regions A quick list of options I am considering: www.site.com/region/page region.site.com/page www.site.com/page?region (no cookie, pages require the parameter. If visited without; the user must select a region) www.site.com/page (using cookie and a splash screen if needed; could pass parameter in to set the region for direct linking) Thanks in advance for your advice.

Is there a Maven plugin to generate AS3 classes from Java for BlazeDS ?

Hi, I'm looking for a maven plugin that would generate ActionScript3 classes from Java classes in order to access them by object remoting. I've seen FlexMojo but it uses the GraniteDS generator wich create some problems when it comes to map Enum objects (wich can be fix through a workaround that is describe here : http://dev.c-ware.de/confluence/display/PUBLIC/Flexmojos+generated+AS3+model+with+Enum+support+using+BlazeDS?focusedCommentId=7634946&#comment-7634946 if you've googled your way here this might be useful) when working with BlazeDS. Everything that i found so far are people who explain how to generate VO classes on flex side using Flash Builder 4, but this solution can not be used in an industrial developpement environnement. ASP.NET MVC Best Implementation Practices

I've recently been asked to completely rewrite and redesign a web site and the owner of the company has stressed that he wants the site to be made with the latest and greatest technology available, but to avoid additional costs. As of right now, I'm torn between looking into a CMS implementation and writing a new implementation with MVC. The site is mainly brochure ware, but will need to allow the visitors to submit some data through forms. There are quite a few lists and content features that are dynamic and should be treated as such. Since ASP.NET MVC is new, I don't want to bastardize the implementation if I go that way... Any recommendations on best implementation practices for a MVC website? Also, has anyone had their MVC implementation hosted anywhere that they would recommend?

Easy Way for Non-Nerd to Manage Simple Site?

Hi I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question for StackOverflow. I have a friend show wants a simple "Brochure Ware" web site. I could make it for him but it would be better if he could manage it himself. Are there any services out there that allow a non-technical person to create and maintain a very simple site? I'm thinking just a few pages - contact, about, home with some photos and general info. He also wants to sell some stuff but I'm going to suggest he does this using EBay but the web site would be a handy reference for potential customers who want to know more about him and his services.
