  • Python - Things I shouldn't be doing?

    - by cornjuliox
    I've got a few questions about best practices in Python. Not too long ago I would do something like this with my code: ... junk_block = "".join(open("foo.txt","rb").read().split()) ... I don't do this anymore because I can see that it makes code harder to read, but would the code run slower if I split the statements up like so: f_obj = open("foo.txt", "rb") f_data = f_obj.read() f_data_list = f_data.split() junk_block = "".join(f_data_list) I also noticed that there's nothing keeping you from doing an 'import' within a function block, is there any reason why I should do that?

  • how do I get foreign_key to work in this simple has_many, belongs_to relationship?

    - by rpflo
    I'm pulling data from Harvest. Here are my two models and schema: # schema create_table "clients", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "harvest_id" end create_table "projects", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "client_id" t.integer "harvest_id" end # Client.rb has_many :projects, :foreign_key => 'client_id' # not needed, I know # Project.rb belongs_to :client, :foreign_key => 'harvest_id' I'm trying to get the Projects to find their client by matching Project.client_id to a Client.harvest_id. Here is what I'm getting instead. > Project.first.client_id => 187259 Project.first.client => nil Client.find(187259).projects => [] Is this possible? Thanks!

  • capistrano put() and upload() both failing

    - by Kyle
    With capistrano, I am deploying a Rails application from Mac OS X 10.5 to CentOS 5.2 Note that deploy.rb and the server environment have not changed in over a year. There is a task within our deploy.rb file called upload: put(File.read( file ),"#{shared_path}/#{filename}", :via => :scp) This fails each and every time with the following exception: No such file or directory - /srv/ourapp/releases/20100104194410/config/database.yml My local copy of config/database.yml is failing to upload properly. I've verified it's not our internet connection, as this happens on three different connections and two different systems. I've also tried to swap out put() for upload() but get the same result; also, dropping :via = :scp, and/or trying to force :sftp instead similarly fails. Relevant info: $ cap -V Capistrano v2.5.10 $ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [i686-darwin9.6.0]

  • Problem with Ruby script output being stored into a file

    - by nickf
    I have a Ruby script that outputs a heap of text. As an example: puts "line 1" puts "line 2" puts "line 3" # etc... (obviously, this isn't how my script works..) There's not a lot of data - perhaps about 8kb of character data in total. When I run the script on the command line, it works as expected: $ ./my-script.rb line 1 line 2 line 3 But, when I push it into a file, the output is truncated at exactly 4096 bytes: $ ./my-script.rb > output.txt What would cause it to stop at 4kb?

  • ActionView::MissingTemplate after Rails 3.1 upgrade

    - by jonallard
    After upgrading to Rails 3.1.0 and following David Rice's instructions, all of my controllers strangely can't find their views anymore. # rails s # Started GET "/units" for 127.0.0.1 at 2011-09-04 07:52:23 -0400 Unit Load (0.1ms) SELECT "units".* FROM "units" ActionView::MissingTemplate (Missing template units/index, application/index with {:handlers=>[:erb, :builder], :formats=>[:html], :locale=>[:en, :en]}. Searched in: ): app/controllers/units_controller.rb:9:in `index' units_controller.rb: # GET /units # GET /units.xml def index @units = Unit.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @units } end end Of course, the view is there (/app/views/units/index.html.erb; it was working before the upgrade). I feel this is a stupid error, what am I missing here?

  • bundler/capistrano is not installing gems with correct ruby version

    - by Douglas
    I'm trying to deploy my first app on a server with Capistrano, and I'm a bit lost with managing gemsets and ruby version. These are my (server and workstation) versions : Rails 3.2.8 RVM 1.16.17 Gem 1.8.24 Bundler 1.2.1 pg gem 0.14.1 My gemset are : Gemsets for ruby-1.9.3-p194 (found in /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194) (default) global = rail3dev20120606 I set the default gemset with : rvm use 1.9.3-p194@rail3dev20120606 --default --passenger When I run a : cap bundle:install The task end with success, but when I do a : gem list There are many missing gems though they are present in my Gemfile. When I go to check my gems in /var/www/opf/shared/bundle/ruby/ I find a folder called 1.9.1 and in /var/www/opf/shared/bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems/ I can fond all of my needed gems (specified in Gemfile). I'm sure there is a problem with ruby version, but how do I solve this ? At the moment, if I do any rake command, I got a ruby crash [Bug] Segmentation fault, as it try to access the db and using postgresql_adapter. I think as many gems are missing there must have some gem dependencies not verified, and maybe a gem is using an incompatible ruby version 1.9.1 though it expect a 1.9.3. I think the issue is around managing ruby versions and gems. I'm certainly doing some mix with gemset and my capistrano deployement. I'm missing experience and info. Could anybody advise me how to handle this on the server ? What are the best practices ? How am I suppose to update my ruby version ? with Capistrano deploy.rb ? manually ? with/without rvm ? I saw a new version of ruby 1.9.3-p327 has just released. Should I use gemset or not ? What about the :rvm_ruby_string in my deploy.rb. Is it correctly spelled or should I remove the p194 part ? Should I Remove the :rvm_ruby_string ? Keep it ? Use a .rvmrc file ??? I'm really lost and some kind help would be welcome. This is my config/deploy.rb in any case : require 'bundler/capistrano' require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), 'deploy') + '/capistrano_database' set :rvm_type, :system set :rvm_ruby_string, 'ruby-1.9.3-p194@rail3dev20120606' require 'rvm/capistrano' set :application, 'opf' set :deploy_to, '/var/www/opf' set :rails_env, 'production' set :user, 'the_user' set :use_sudo, false set :group_writable, false set :scm, :git set :repository, '[email protected]:user/opf.git' set :branch, 'master' default_run_options[:pty] = true set :deploy_via, :remote_cache server '192.168.5.200', :web, :app, :db, :primary => true # If you are using Passenger mod_rails uncomment this: namespace :deploy do task :start do ; end task :stop do ; end task :restart, :roles => :app, :except => { :no_release => true } do run "#{try_sudo} touch #{File.join(current_path,'tmp','restart.txt')}" end end Thanks for any help

  • How can this closure test be written in other languages?

    - by Jian Lin
    I wonder how the following closure test can be written in other languages, such as C and Java. Can the same result be expected also in Perl, Python, and PHP? Ideally, we don't need to make a new local variable such as x and assign it the value of i inside the loop, but just so that i has a new copy in the new scope each time. (if possible). (some discussion is in this question.) The following is in Ruby, the "1.8.6" on the first line of result is the Ruby version which can be ignored. p RUBY_VERSION $foo = [] (1..5).each do |i| $foo[i] = lambda { p i } end (1..5).each do |j| $foo[j].call() end the print out is: [MacBook01:~] $ ruby scope.rb "1.8.6" 1 2 3 4 5 [MacBook01:~] $ Contrast that with another test, with i defined outside: p RUBY_VERSION $foo = [] i = 0 (1..5).each do |i| $foo[i] = lambda { p i } end (1..5).each do |j| $foo[j].call() end the print out: [MacBook01:~] $ ruby scope2.rb "1.8.6" 5 5 5 5 5 [MacBook01:~] $

  • Ruby on Rails - where to write business logic while processing a request? (newbie)

    - by Genadinik
    I am learning Ruby on Rails. I made a simple link like this: <%= link_to "Alex Link", alexes_path(@alex) %> then I routed it in routes.rb like this: resources :alexes get "home/index" then I am a bit unclear, but I think it goes to this part of the controller: def index #@alexes = Alex.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.json { render json: @alexes } end end Am I correct that it goes to this part of the controller? Then nothing much happens and it goes to the next page which is index.html.rb under views\alexes So what I am wondering is - if I needed to do some business logic, would I write that in the controller snippet? Where inside the snippet? An example would be nice to take a look. Also, I would like to connect to a MongoDb database. Would I also write that in the middle of the controller? Thanks!

  • ruby in 100 minutes good_morning method issue

    - by user2525947
    I have been doing the Ruby in 100 minutes on the JumpStart labs website, and encountered a problem during part 5. I was asked to create a good_morning method that would print out a greeting such as 'Happy Monday, it's the 130 day of 2013'. Here is my current program: class PersonalChef def good_morning today = Date.today.strftime("%A") day_of_year = Date.today.yday puts "Happy#{today}! It is the #{day_of_year} day of year." return self end def make_toast(color) puts " Making your toast #{color}!" return self end def make_milkshake(flavor) puts " Making a #{flavor} milkshake!" return self end def make_eggs(quantity) puts " Making you #{quantity} eggs!" return self end end when I try to run the program load on irb( 'personal_chef.rb', frank = PersonalChef.new, frank.make_milkshake('chocolate'), etc, everything works fine until I try to type frank.good_morning into irb, which gives the following error message: NameError: uninitialized constant PersonalChef :: Date from personal_chef.rb:5: in good_morning from (irb):3 from /bin/irb:12:in '' Any help or information to help me solve this issue would be greatly appreciated. • Can't mass-assign protected attributes: user

    - by Ben Aluan
    I'm working on a simple app that requires me to submit a form. I created two models. user.rb class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :email has_many :item end item.rb class Item < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :user_id belongs_to :user end Instead of creating a user using the user form view, I'm trying to create the user using the item form view. items/_form.html.haml = nested_form_for @item do |form| = form.fields_for :user do |builder| = builder.text_field :email = form.submit "Save" Did I miss something here? I'm using nested_form_for btw. Thank you.

  • are fixtures loaded when using the sql dump to create a test database

    - by Josh Moore
    Because of some non standard table creation options I am forced to use the sql dump instead of the standard schema.rb (i.e. I have uncommented this line in the environment.rb config.active_record.schema_format = :sql). I have noticed that when I use the sql dump that my fixtures do not seem to be loaded into the database. Some data is loaded into it but, I am not sure where it is coming from. Is this normal? and if it is normal can anybody tell me where this other data is coming from?

  • Combined sign in and registration page?

    - by Ryan
    This is somewhat against rails convention but I am trying to have one controller that manages both user session authentication and user registration. I am having troubles figuring out how to go about this. So far I am merging the User Controller and the Sessions Controller and having the 'new' method deliver both a new usersession and a new user instance. With the new routes in rails 3 though, I am having trouble figuring out how to generate forms for these items. Below is the code: user_controller.rb class UserController < ApplicationController def new @user_session = UserSession.new @user = User.new end def create_user @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save flash[:notice] = "Account Successfully Registered" redirect_back_or_default signup_path else render :action => new end end def create_session @user_session = UserSession.new(params[:user_session]) if @user_session.save flash[:notice] = "Login successful!" redirect_back_or_default login_path else render :action => new end end end views/user/new.html.erb <div id="login_section"> <% form_for @user_session do |f| -%> <%= f.label :email_address, "Email Address" %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= f.label :password, "Password" %> <%= f.text_field :password %> <%= f.submit "Login", :disable_with => 'Logining...' %> <% end -%> </div> <div id="registration_section"> <% form_for @user do |f| -%> <%= f.label :email_address, "Email Address" %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= f.label :password, "Password" %> <%= f.text_field :password %> <%= f.label :password_confirmation, "Password Confirmation" %> <%= f.text_field :password_confirmation %> <%= f.submit "Register", :disable_with => 'Logining...' %> <% end -%> </div> I imagine I will need to use :url = something for those forms, but I am unsure how to specify. Within routes.rb I have yet to specify either Usersor UserSessions as resources (not convinced that this is the best way to do it... but I could be). I would like, however, the registration and login on the same page and have implemented this by doing the following: routes.rb match 'signup' => 'user#new' match 'login' => 'user#new' What's the best way to go about solving this?

  • Rails Seed confusion

    - by sscirrus
    I'm having trouble seeding my database using seed.rb, specifically where table relationships are concerned. Here's a sample of the code: # seed.rb user = User.find_or_create_by_login( :login => "myname", :email => "[email protected]", :user_type => "Admin", :password => "admin", :password_confirmation => "admin") project = Project.find_or_create_by_user_id( :user_id => user.id, :name => "Test Project") When project is created (along with other unrelated parameters I've left out from above), user_id is empty. How can I get this to work?

  • Devise and cancan gems: has_many association

    - by tiktak
    I use devise and cancan gems and have simple model association: user has_many subscriptions, subscription belongs_to :user. Have following SubscriptionsController: class SubscriptionsController < ApplicationController load_and_authorize_resource :user load_and_authorize_resource :subscription, through: :user before_filter :authenticate_user! def index @subscriptions = @user.subscriptions.paginate(:page => params[:page]).order(:created_at) end #other actions end And Cancan Ability.rb: class Ability include CanCan::Ability def initialize(user) user ||=User.new can [:index, :show], [Edition, Kind] if user.admin? can :manage, :all elsif user.id can [:read, :create, :destroy, :pay], Subscription, user_id: user.id can [:delete_from_cart, :add_to_cart, :cart], User, id: user.id end end end The problem is that i cannot use subscriptions actions as a user but can as a admin. And have no problems with UsersController. When i delete following lines from SubscriptionsController: load_and_authorize_resource :user load_and_authorize_resource :subscription, through: :user before_filter :authenticate_user! Have no problems at all. So the issue in these lines or in Ability.rb. Any suggestions?

  • How do I model a has_many :through and with aggregation in Rails?

    - by Angela
    How do I model having multiple Addresses for a Company and assign a single Address to a Contact? Contacts belong_to a Company. A Company has_many Contacts. A Company also has_many Addresses. And each Contact belongs_to an Address. How do I model this? I have Model/Contacts.rb belong_to :Company belong_to :Address (?) Model/Company.rb has_many :Contacts has_many :Addresses Address is an aggregation of :street1, :street2, :city, :state, :zip so not clear exactly what to do there. So what would I do in my _form so that when I have a contact/new I am able to either default to a main address or select one of the others? If none of them match, adding for a Contact makes that address available to any subsequent contact?

  • post-install hook for a particular gem

If I put it in my Rakefile and/or src_of_myproject/lib/rubygems_plugin.rb file, than build the gem, install it--but the expected string is never printed after the installation. I'm totally confused. How to embed the post-install hook into the gem spec? Update: it's getting more interesting. If I put Gem.post_uninstall hook in src_of_myproject/lib/rubygems_plugin.rb--that hook works. Gem.post_uninstall do |uninstaller| puts "!!! #{uninstaller.spec.full_name} UNINSTALLED !!!" end Hm... And wtf is with Gem.post_install?

  • How do I use Ruby metaprogramming to refactor this common code?

    - by James Wenton
    I inherited a project with a lot of badly-written Rake tasks that I need to clean up a bit. Because the Rakefiles are enormous and often prone to bizarre nonsensical dependencies, I'm simplifying and isolating things a bit by refactoring everything to classes. Specifically, that pattern is the following: namespace :foobar do desc "Frozz the foobar." task :frozzify do unless Rake.application.lookup('_frozzify') require 'tasks/foobar' Foobar.new.frozzify end Rake.application['_frozzify'].invoke end # Above pattern repeats many times. end # Several namespaces, each with tasks that follow this pattern. In tasks/foobar.rb, I have something that looks like this: class Foobar def frozzify() # The real work happens here. end # ... Other tasks also in the :foobar namespace. end For me, this is great, because it allows me to separate the task dependencies from each other and to move them to another location entirely, and I've been able to drastically simplify things and isolate the dependencies. The Rakefile doesn't hit a require until you actually try to run a task. Previously this was causing serious issues because you couldn't even list the tasks without it blowing up. My problem is that I'm repeating this idiom very frequently. Notice the following patterns: For every namespace :xyz_abc, there is a corresponding class in tasks/... in the file tasks/[namespace].rb, with a class name that looks like XyzAbc. For every task in a particular namespace, there is an identically named method in the associated namespace class. For example, if namespace :foo_bar has a task :apples, you would expect to see def apples() ... inside the FooBar class, which itself is in tasks/foo_bar.rb. Every task :t defines a "meta-task" _t (that is, the task name prefixed with an underscore) which is used to do the actual work. I still want to be able to specify a desc-description for the tasks I define, and that will be different for each task. And, of course, I have a small number of tasks that don't follow the above pattern at all, so I'll be specifying those manually in my Rakefile. I'm sure that this can be refactored in some way so that I don't have to keep repeating the same idiom over and over, but I lack the experience to see how it could be done.
