• Audio recording and playback in Silverlight

  I have a Silverlight 4 application that records user's voice through the mic. Now, as soon as the recording is completed, I need to play the recorded voice back to the user before posting it to the server. Is it at all possible to play it back to the user without getting into format conversions etc? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

• Problem deleting record using Entity Framework and System.Data.SQLite

  I have a SQLite DB that is set up so when I delete a Person the delete is cascaded. This works fine when I manually delete a Person (all records that reference the PersonID are deleted). But when I use Entity Framework to delete the Person I get an error: System.InvalidOperationException: The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted. I don't understand why this is occurring. My trigger is set to clean up all related objects before deleting the object it was told to delete. When I go into the model editor and check the properties of the relationship it shows no action for the OnDelete property. Why isn't this set correctly by pulling it from the DB? Here's the relivent SQL for my tables.   I have a tblMachineReports with the columns: Status(varchar),LogDate(datetime),Category(varchar), and MachineID(int). I want to retrieve the latest status update from each category for every machine, so in effect getting a snapshot of the latest statuses of all the machines unique to their MachineID. The table data would look like Category - Status - MachineID - LogDate cata - status1 - 001 - date1 cata - status2 - 002 - date2 catb - status3 - 001 - date2 catc - status2 - 002 - date4 cata - status3 - 001 - date5 catc - status1 - 001 - date6 catb - status2 - 001 - date7 cata - status2 - 002 - date8 catb - status2 - 002 - date9 catc - status2 - 001 - date10 Restated, I have multiple machines reporting on multiple statuses in this tblMachineReports. All the rows are created through inserts, so their will obviously be duplicate entries for machines as new statuses come in. None of the columns can be predicted, so I can't do any ='some hard coded string' comparisons in any part of the select statement. For the sample table I provided, the desired results would look like: Category - Status - MachineID - LogDate catc - status2 - 002 - date4 cata - status3 - 001 - date5 catb - status2 - 001 - date7 cata - status2 - 002 - date8 catb - status2 - 002 - date9 catc - status2 - 001 - date10 What would the select statement look like to achieve this, getting the latest status for each category on each machine, using MS SQL Server 2008? I have tried different combinations of subqueries combined with aggregate MAX(LogDates)'s, along with joins, group bys, distincts, and what-not, but have yet to find a working solution.

  I will be doing an occiasional import from XML into core data. I have around 50k entities that will be added. My question is how often should I call [managedObjectContext save:&error]. For every new entity added, or every x entities, or just at the end of the 50k import? I currently am calling it for each entity and tried only doing it for around every 10k and import speed went up drastically but after the first 30k it would crash with: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: '*** Collection <NSCFSet: 0x13e760> was mutated while being enumerated.' Before I spend too much time trying to diagnose what is going on there I figured I'd check if its ok to not call save on every entity? Is the # of entities before calling save limited by the amount of memory those entities are using?

I have two simple entities, Employee and Department. Each Department has many Employees and each Employee belongs to a Department (using deptno and workdept).   Hi Guys, I've got two tables (items / tags). Item has and belongs to many tags - tag has and belongs to many items. It's no problem for me to fetch all related tags like: $item = ORM::factory('item', 4); foreach($item->tags as $tag){....} But how can i fetch only one... and maybe a specific one?   I'm tring to increment a field in a MySQL database using SubSonic 3 ActiveRecord. In SQL, this is what I'm after: UPDATE people SET messages_received=messages_received+1 WHERE people_id=@id_to; I tried the following, but it didn't seem to work (messages_received always seemed to be 1): _db.Update<person>() .Set("messages_received").EqualTo(x => x.messages_received == x.messages_received + 1) .Where(x => x.people_id == idTo) .Execute(); This did work: string sql="UPDATE people SET messages_received=messages_received+1 WHERE people_id=@id_to"; var q=new SubSonic.Query.QueryCommand(sql, _db.Provider); q.AddParameter("id_to", idTo); q.Provider.ExecuteQuery(q); So I have a solution, but I'm just wondering if it's possible to do this without resorting to plain SQL?

• Creating a new record using AJAX in ASP.NET-MVC

  I am having the hardest time wrapping my head around this. I recently asked this question Create/Edit/Save data in a jQuery pop-up for ASP.NET-MVC and Linq2Sql I'm sure that the response is the right way to go, but I just can't figure out how to write the back-end code to make it work. I originally made my site by following the nerddinner tutorial. I have a subcontracts model and a subcontracts controller. On my subcontract entry page, I'd like for there to be a pop-up/dialog box where the user can enter a new company if the company isn't already in the drop-down list. Do I need to create a new company controller? I wouldn't have a company model b/c the company table is linked to my subcontracts table within the subcontracts dbml. Can anyone point me to an example somewhere? Or offer any help.

• Readline, the Input Record Separator and Ruby

  In Ruby I'm looking to read data until I reach a delimiter or end of file. I found this is possible by redefining $/ or the $INPUT_RECORD_SEPARATOR to my delimiter. However with all the "features" in the Ruby language it seems hokey to change the value of a global to do this. Also, readline used to consume the delimiter while not it is included in what is returned. Is there any other way to "read until" while consuming the delimiter that doesn't involve getting the values char by char in a loop?

• Algorithms for finding a numerical record in a list of ordered numbers

  I have a list of incomplete ordered numbers. I want to find a particular number with as few steps as possible. Are there any improvements on this algorithm, I assume you can count the set size without difficulty - it will be stored and updated every time a new item is added. Your object is to get your cursor over the value x The first number (smallest) is s, and the last number (greatest) is g. Take the midpoint m1 of the set: calculate is x < m1, If yes then s <= x < m1 If no then m1 < x <= g If m1 = x then you're done. Keep repeating till you find x. Basically dividing the set into two parts with each iteration till you hit x. The purpose is to retrieve a numerical id from a very large table to then find the associated other records. I would imagine this is the most trivial kind of indexing available, are there improvements?

• Anyone using NoSQL databases for medical record storage?

  Electronic Medical records are composed of different types of data. Visit information ( date/location/insurance info) seems to lend itself to a RDMS. Other types of medical infomation, such as lab reports, x-rays, photos, and electronic signatures, are document based and would seem to be a good candidate for a 'document-oriented' database, such as MongoDB. Traditionally, binary data would be stored as a BLOB in a RDBMS. A hybrid approach using a traditional RDBMS along with a 'document-oriented' database would seem like good alternative to this. Other alternative would be something like DB2 purexml. The ultimate answer could be that 'it depends', but I really just wanted to get some general feedback/ideas on this. Is anyone using the NoSql approach for medical records?

• Search database with textbox/button, display record in detailsview and update fields

  Hello, I am trying to do all on one page. There are 3 textboxes and 3 buttons, one sqldatasource and one detailsview. Sqidatasource is configured to take parameters from textboxes and ingnore blank textboxes to be able to search by one (any) field at the time. When I do "test query" in sqldatasource - everything is working. Deatailsview is set to have sqldatasoure as datasourse. On each button I do detailsview.databind() but nothing is showing up. Need help, thank you.
