• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members. • How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

  I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015. Update 2: In SystemPrefsMouse there's a lightbulb icon for testing double-click speed. Every working button can turn the bulb on&off, but the missing buttons can't. It would seem that Ubuntu isn't aware of these buttons and thus doesn't register their clicks. I guess I need to hunt for a driver, though a mainstream mouse is probably the easier way.

• HP Pavilion 15 with AMD dual graphics - Ubuntu live environment not starting

  I've had this laptop for about a day now and have decided to try Ubuntu on it and determine if I want to install it. I created a USB, it booted (Secure Boot was on, I tried with Secure Boot off to no effect), and then the problem occurred. The screen turned off for a second, turned back on to a black screen, shut off again and turned back on with a dialogue box telling me that the system had to use low-graphics mode. I clicked OK, selected low-graphics mode from the menu and clicked OK. The screen switched to the boot messages and did not go any further than this. Ctrl+Alt+DEL started rebooting the laptop though. I tried booting again, but this time I edited the boot options in GRUB to add nomodeset. This time, the laptop only booted to a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2 took me to a prompt, I tried startx from there, but X didn't start, complaining that it wanted kernel mode setting back. I can not seem to find any option to disable one graphics chip or the other in the UEFI setup menus. Laptop : HP Pavilion 15-E004AU. The CPU : AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics The graphics chip : AMD Radeon HD 7520G + 8670M Dual Graphics. The Ubuntu version : 13.10, 64 bit. Thanks. EDIT: I tried 12.04.3 LTS, it managed to bring the desktop up. There are severe graphics glitches after about two minutes though.

• Screencast not producing files

  I'm using Gnome 3 on 12.04 and trying to create a screencast. I start the screencast using the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R shortcut and the red light appears in the bottom right corner. I go about my business then press the key combination again when done. The problem is that the screencast file gets generated maybe 1 out of 10 times. Is there a log file I can look at to determine the issue? How about a settings file? UPDATE: I did some additional testing. What's happening is that the screencast does work but it appends the new video to the existing file. Even if the file is renamed or moved to trash. Emptying trash does not create a new file either. Not sure where the video gets recorded to then. The only reliable way I've found to have a new file created is to log out of the session and log back in. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to force screencast to create a new file every time Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R is pressed?

• Automatically revert to laptop screen when external monitor unplugged

  I regularly use an external monitor with my laptop, so when I use it, I usually have the laptop screen disabled when the monitor is connected, and this seems to cause problems when the monitor is disconnected. If the monitor is connected while the laptop screen is disabled, I can't get the X session to show up at all: I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a terminal, and that works fine.. ..but Ctrl+Alt+F7 does nothing. The display is blank, and stays blank. The same thing happens whether I put the computer to sleep with the monitor connected, or if I disconnect while the computer is still awake. Rebooting the computer fixes the issue, as does killing Xorg and starting it again, but both of those are sub-optimal since I lose my current session. I'm currently using the open source graphics driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati). This question looks like it might answer my question, but unfortunately hwinfo is no longer available in the apt repository. Is there a way with current tools to automatically detect when the external monitor is disconnected and switch to the laptop display?

• Build vs Rebuild

  Build means compile and link only the source files that have changed since the last build, while Rebuild means compile and link all source files regardless of whether they changed or not. Build is the normal thing to do and is faster. Sometimes the versions of project target components can get out of sync and rebuild is necessary to make the build successful. In practice, you never need to Clean. Build or Rebuild Solution builds or rebuilds all projects in the your solution, while Build or Rebuild <project name> builds or rebuilds the StartUp project. To set the StartUp project, right click on the desired project name in the Solution Explorer tab and select Set as StartUp project. The project name now appears in bold. Compile just compiles the source file currently being edited. Useful to quickly check for errors when the rest of your source files are in an incomplete state that would prevent a successful build of the entire project. Ctrl-F7 is the shortcut key for Compile. All source files that have changed are saved when you request a build/rebuild, so you don't have to save them first. When you run your executable (F5 or Ctrl-F5), Visual Studio saves all your changed source files and builds anything that changed, so you don't need to explicitly do those steps every time. This allows for quick "trial and error" debugging. • Pasting from vim in terminal to Google Docs (Firefox + Vimperator) - need to understand

  I had some trouble with copy-pasting text from vim in terminal to Google Docs (aka Drive) document (hereafter GDd) in FF browser (with Vimperator). Note: I have a file opened in Vim 7.2 in terminal :version displays both +clipboard and +xterm-clipboard I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so I don't think that's Unity-related I want to use Vim, not GVim, nor gedit... I'm avid fan of mouseless navigation, so solution with mouse was not what I wanted. I have the solution, but I need understanding. What I tried and where it gets me: Yanking whole file text via: ggvGy allows me to: paste it via mouse middle button, NOT with Ctrl+v or Shift+Insert here, in text area for entering question text in gedit but NOT in GDd where I want it pasted, even if I switch Vimperator to pass-through mode with Insert does NOT show in XClip after xclip -o From gedit, I can copy-paste the text into GDd (Vimperator's pass-through mode not required). :%! !xclip -i (or :first, last) reports whole file (all lines, to be precise) as filtered, though shell returns 1 `xclip -o' returns nothing (is empty) or returns previously copied value with 2. no surprise, but I can't paste at all not only to GDd but also to gedit or here setting clipboard (:set clipboard=unnamed) to unnamed doesn't help using "+y or "*y on whole file text actually does the trick So, the question (it's actually three, say "split" and I will): why middle mouse button pastes different things than Ctrl+v and how to know what will be pasted with each? why just yanking (without registers) works with mouse but not with keyboard / XClip? why didn't unnamed register help? After setting, it should make unnamed and * registers same?

• Force startx to run X in a specific resolution and refresh Rate

  From my past experience (using Win-Xp), this particular monitor works only on 60Hz , Best resolution being 1024x768. I have "installed and configured" Ubuntu 12.04 Minimal (on USB stick) so that most of the time terminal is used, however, whenever there is a need to enter GUI, I may issue startx command to go into gnome. However the problem is that on this particular system, issuing this command poses problem because its default refresh rate won't synchronize with the monitor. The display keep on flickering and utterly unreadable. It is visible that gnome has been loaded and default wallpaper and desktop items are visible. But the problem is due to refresh rate different than 60Hz. I am looking for a command attribute to startx command which will force the refresh rate to 60Hz and resolution preferably to 1204x768 I can open terminals with Ctrl+Alt+T and enter commands. Key combinations like Ctrl+Alt+NumPlus works flawlessly in distributions like solaris, but it's not working for me. Also the commands like xrandr -r 60 60 being refresh rate wont work. The same problem is faced even when I boot from a live CD

• Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

  Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

• Connecting / disconnecting DisplayPort causes crash

  I wanted to file a bug about this using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel, but the system prompted my to try posting here first. So here goes :-) While the situation in Ubuntu 11.10 was still somewhat workable (see UI freezes when disconnecting DisplayPort), in 12.04 (using Unity 3D) it has gotten worse. The weird part is that during the 12.04 beta's, the situation was actually improving! I was able to successfully connect and disconnect a DisplayPort monitor without the system breaking down on me. But now with 12.04 final (with all updates), it's just plain terrible. When I now connect an external monitor using the DisplayPort connector on my HP ProBook 6550b, it only works sometimes. Most times (but not always!) the screen just goes blank and the system seems to crash (not even CTRL+ALT+F1 works anymore). Only a hard shutdown by keeping the power button pressed for several seconds and then a restart gets me out of this. I suspect the chances of the system crashing become higher as the system's uptime increases, especially when there have been one or more suspend-resume cycles (although I have also experienced this bug once from a cold boot). Disconnecting is roughly the same as with 11.10 (see issue mentioned above), with the difference that if I resume from suspend, I no longer have to do a CTRL+ALT+F1, ALT+F7 cycle to get my screen back. So what more can I try? Or should I just go ahead and file the bug anyway?

• Smarter Search Results in NetBeans IDE 7.2

  After you search your code using NetBeans IDE (using Ctrl-F for "Find" or Ctrl-H for "Replace"), you see the Search Results window, which looks like this: At least, the above is how it looks in NetBeans IDE 7.2. Before that, you didn't have all those extra columns (which can be displayed in the Search Results window after clicking the small button top right in the view) and you also didn't have the quick search (which is invoked by typing directly into the Search Results window), as can be seen here: So, the Search Results window now provides a lot more info than before. Being able to know the path to a file I've found, as well as the last modification date, file size, and the number of matches within the file, is useful at the end of a search process. In the NetBeans IDE 7.2 New & Noteworthy, the above changes are described in the Utilities section, as well as in the Quick Search in OutlineView section, where you can read that these are generic solutions that can be used in your own OutlineViews. • How do I install the nvidia driver for a GeForce 9300M?

  Yesterday i've installed ubuntu 11.04 (instead of 10.10). And i need to install nvidia driver which supports opengl 3.3 In 10.10 i did it in a such way: Ctrl+alt+f1 login sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop sudo sh driver.run startx Not it doesn't work. Because ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't show login screen. Just only black screen. I've googled this problem. Some people have it but no one knows how to solve. Sometimes people say that it is connected with video card or driver. But i have GeForce 9300M G, and i've activated a standard driver. Anyway, it worked in 10.10, but doesn't work now. The main problem is that i need to kill xserver to install this driver. killing the process just only restarts xserver. Also, I've tried to /etc/init.d/gdm stop in GUI-console. It says that "Fake initctl,doing nothing". Google didn't helped in this case too. Any ideas to install that driver?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Fails to Boot after Reboot

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on several Dell c6220 servers. The install was successful and all hardware is recognized. The problem that I am running into is that when issuing the reboot command or when pressing ctrl-alt-del, the server shuts down, but never comes back up. Instead, the fan revs up to full speed and stays that way until I power the server down. Once the server has been powered down via the power button, Ubuntu will boot just fine -- until the next reboot. I have found that by rebooting the server via the DRAC web interface will reboot the server correctly. I have also found that this problem does not exist with CentOS -- I can press ctrl-alt-del all day long and it always comes back up. I've tried several kernel parameters such as: reboot=bios reboot=pci reboot=acpi reboot=cold acpi=off noapic Nothing seems to work. I have also tried upgrading to kernel 3.4, but no change there, either. Has anyone run into a similar problem or any pointers on troubleshooting? Thanks, Joe

• Game crash/Screen freeze recovery (without shell or reboot)

  I am an old Windows PC gamer, now converted into Ubuntu (Linux) lover. I am even going so far as to attempt to replace all my games in a Windows dual-boot with Wine and it is going well. However... Even if Linux is less prone to crashing, games, especially the windows ones (but also a few native) can crash. My problem is when this is in full screen and the computer becomes non-responsive. In Windows you can solve this with ctrl+alt+delete, but Ubuntu lacks this feature and my only choice is a reboot. Is there any Ubuntu version of this feature? Of course excepting the ctrl+alt+F1, find and kill process method. It is fine if you know how to do it, but too slow and difficult for the typical gamer. I believe strongly in Ubuntu as the future gaming platform in one form or another. If this feature does not exist, then the Ubuntu team should address this as fast as possible, since it is critical for all old Windows gamers. Thank you for your time. Asavar Tzeth (Alias)

• Will the Driver Support for Intel HD Graphics be Improved in 12.10?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. This is a core i7 machine with Intel HD graphics and also a separate nVidia VGA card. I had a lot of issues getting Ubuntu 12.04 working on this system. First there were issues booting up the live CD for installation. I worked around that by using the 'nomodeset' option. Then I continued to have similar issues after installation has completed. So I had to permanently add the nomodeset option to my GRUB boot configuration. At the moment I have a working installation but there are many issues: Ubuntu GUI is a bit flaky at times. The mouse pointer goes on and off when hovering over certain icons. Certain things doesn't get rendered properly on the screen. I can't access any of the tty consoles. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen. And once that happens I can't even come back to the UI by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7. I've realized that tty consoles are actually working. I just can't see the text. If I enter a command like 'sudo reboot' into the empty screen the machine reboots. Can't get external displays (monitors, projectors etc) working. But I think this is probably because the VGA out is wired to the nVidia card which is not being used by Linux. colord program crashes every now and then triggering a popup message. So my main question is, will the support for Intel HD graphics be improved in the next release? Or will I have to keep using the nomodeset option in the new release too? Also I appreciate if anybody can shed some light on any of the issues listed above. Thanks in advance.

• Fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install no desktop or wing bar

  After a fresh installm of ubuntu 12.10 (complete erase) after logging in it appears i have no taskbar or much of anything, although i can still execute my terminal with CTRL+ALT+T. i looked around a little, seems i'm not the only person who has had this problem. I found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12303179#post12303179 From there, i found myself here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates/+bug/1068341 I followed precisely the instructions provided which were: this problem is solved this way Switch to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1). Login as your username. Install linux source (sudo apt-get install linux-source) and headers (sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic). Uninstall nvidia driver - this depends on which version you installed (sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304). Reinstall nvidia driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates). If it successfully installs, restart the computer (sudo shutdown -r now). Source Desktop does not show when I installed nvidia drivers! I have rebooted, and i am still having the exact same problem. so i back at square one. can someone help me please? this is my room mates computer and i told him i was "fixing" it and now i feel like i've ruined it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Three Ubuntu 12.04 + Xfce problems

  sorry to bother you, but I wanted to set up a minimal Ubuntu 12.04 with minimal Xfce and probably due to my unawareness of several important things, not everything is working properly. -Sometimes when I shutdown I get error message from iwlwifi: It starts with a time out error about sending a power table and after several other errors it says "On demand firmware reload and "Unable to initialize device". And the shutdown stops there so I can only use hard shutdown. -Also when I boot, I often boot to a black screen, but pressing ctrl+alt+f1 gets me to the login prompt (I do not use a login manager). But then I sometimes cannot type. Seems probably more like a X server problem. When it works I only see the Plymouth splash for a very short time or sometimes not at all. -And the last problem is the most annoying one: Frequently Xfce freezes completely. I think ctrl+alt+f1 works sometimes, but other times I also have to use hard shutdown. When it freezes the cpu fan gets louder. I've been using Xbuntu for a while before, but with "real" Linux I am more a beginner, so I hope you forgive my questions Thanks

• Top 10 Tips & Tricks for Oracle SQL Developer

  Being a short week due to the holiday, and with everyone enjoying their Summer vacations (apologies Southern Hemispherians), I reckoned it was a great time to do one of those lazy recap-Top 10-Reader’s Digest type posts. I’ve been sharing 1-3 tips or ‘tricks’ a week since I started blogging about SQL Developer, and I have more than enough content to write a book. But since I’m lazy, I’m just going to compile a list of my favorite ‘must know’ tips instead. I always have to leave out a few tips when I do my presentations, so now I can refer back to this list to make sure I’m not forgetting anything. So without further ado… 1. Configure Your Preferences Yes, there are a LOT of options. But you don’t need to worry about all of them just yet. I do recommend you take a quick look at these ones in particular. Whether you’re new to the tool or have been using it for 5 years, don’t overlook these settings! 2. Disable Extensions You Aren’t Using If you’re not using Data Miner, or if you’re not working on a Migration – disable those extensions! SQL Developer will run leaner & meaner, plus the user interface will be a bit more simplified making the tool easier to navigate as well. 3. SQL Recall via Keyboard Access your history via the keyboard! Cycle through your recent SQL statements just using these magic key strokes! Ctrl+Up or Ctrl+Down. 4. Format Your Query Output Directly to CSV, XML, HTML, etc Have the query results pre-formatted in the format of your choice! Too lazy to run the Export wizard for your query result sets? Just add the SQL Developer output hints to your statement and have the output auto-magically formatted to the style of your choice! 5. Drag & Drop Multiple Tables to the Worksheet SQL Developer will auto-join the related objects. You can then toggle over to the Query Builder to toggle off the columns you don’t want to query. I guarantee this tip will save you time if you’re joining 3 or more tables! 6. Drag & Drop Multiple Tables to a Relational Model A pretty picture is worth a few dozen DDL scripts? SQL Developer does data modeling! If you ctrl-drag a table to a model, it will take that table and any related tables and reverse engineer them to a relational model! You can then print it out or export it to HTML, PDF, etc. 7. View Your PL/SQL Execution Output Automatically Function returns a refcursor? Procedure had 3 out parameters? When you run these programs via the Procedure Editor, we automatically capture the output and place them into one or more data grids for you to browse. 8. Disable Automatic Code Insight and Use It On-Demand Code Editor – Completion Insight – Enable Completion Auto-Popup (Keyword being Auto) Some folks really don’t like it when their IDEs or word-processors try to do ‘too much’ for them. Thankfully SQL Developer allows you to either increase the delay before it attempts to auto-complete your text OR to disable the automatic bit. Instead, you can invoke it on-demand. 9. Interactive Debugging – Change Your Variable Values as You Step Through Your PLSQL Watches aren’t just for watching. You can actually interact with your programs and ‘see what happens’ when X = 256 instead of 1. 10. Ditch the Tree View for the Schema Browser There’s nothing wrong with the Connection tree for browsing your database objects. But some folks just can’t seem to get comfortable with it. So, we built them a Schema Browser that uses a drop down control instead for changing up your schema and object types. Already Know This Stuff, Want More? • Mounting ddrescue image after recovery (in over my head)

  I'm having problems mounting the recovery image. I've tried to mount the image multiple ways. quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount -t ext4 /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img /mnt mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount -r -o loop /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img recover mount: you must specify the filesystem type quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img mnt mount: you must specify the filesystem type It doesn't even give me detailed information on the file I just made, nautilus says it's 160gb. quark@DS9 ~ $ file /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img: data quark@DS9 ~ $ mmls /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img Cannot determine partition type I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I started this process incorrectly from the beginning. I've outlined what I've done so far below. I'm clueless, I'd appreciate if someone had some input for me. What I have done from the beginning My laptop has two hard drives. One has the dual boot Win7 / Linux Mint system files. Secondary one contained my /home folder. The laptop was jarred and the /home disk was broken. I tried a LiveCD recovery, it failed. Wouldn't even load a Live session with the disk installed. • What's the best way to handle the same shortcut in WPF and WinForms controls?

  I have a WPF application with the following KeyBinding on its main window: <KeyBinding Command="Commands:EditCommands.Undo" Gesture="CTRL+Z" /> <KeyBinding Command="Commands:EditCommands.Redo" Gesture="CTRL+Y" /> This makes the command respond to the shortcut fine. However, in all the places where I have embedded WinForms text boxes or rich text boxes, I've lost the ability to use those shortcuts. If I remove the above bindings, the WinForms shortcuts work fine. How can I support these shortcuts in both WinForms and WPF? I'd prefer a generic method since this problem is likely to affect many other commands with the same keybindings.

• VS 2010: Can’t insert mvvm-light snippet using shortcut - incompatibility with resharper 5???

  Hi there, i recently installed some snippets that come with the mvvm-light framework i am using. And sure enought i checked via Tools > Code Snippet Manager and they are installed under "My Code Snippets". If i do insert Snipper (right click in code window) or CTRL K + CTRL X then i can search within all available snippets.... But i do believe its possible to just type the shortcut key (in this case it is mvvmlocatorproperty) and pressing tab inserts the snippet BUT when i type the shortcut key it is not recognizing anything... What am i doing wrong?? This is not an incompatibility with resharper 5? - which i have installed Any ideas really appreciated

• Setting winforms ToolStripMenuItem ShortcutKeys to numpad key does not work

  We have the ability to define ShortcutKeys for WinForms application menu items. That way I can tell a menu item File-Save to have a shortcut key Ctrl+S and the menu item's handler is "magically" executed after pressing Ctrl+S. The trouble is with the numeric keypad keys, the ShortcutKey property does not accept them (I don't understand how are they different from the other acceptable keys. MSDN states that the property accepts type System.Windows.Forms.Keys (One of the Keys values. The default is None.); and an InvalidEnumArgumentException would be thrown when the parameter is not one of Keys values. But for example Keys.Divide IS one of Keys values, and yet it can't be used. So how can I set a menu item to have a shortcut for Numpad * or Numpad +? Do I need to handle the key in Form's ProcessCmdKey event? Thanks

• How do I backup and restore the system clipboard in C#?

  Hey everyone, I will do my best to explain in detail what I'm trying to achieve. I'm using C# with IntPtr window handles to perform a CTRL-C copy operation on an external application from my own C# application. I had to do this because there was no way of accessing the text directly using GET_TEXT. I'm then using the text content of that copy within my application. The problem here is that I have now overwritten the clipboard. What I would like to be able to do is: Backup the original contents of the clipboard which could have been set by any application other than my own. Then perform the copy and store the value into my application. Then restore the original contents of the clipboard so that the user still has access to his/her original clipboard data. This is the code I have tried so far: private void GetClipboardText() { text = ""; IDataObject backupClipboad = Clipboard.GetDataObject(); KeyboardInput input = new KeyboardInput(this); input.Copy(dialogHandle); // Performs a CTRL-C (copy) operation IDataObject clipboard = Clipboard.GetDataObject(); if (clipboard.GetDataPresent(DataFormats.Text)) { // Retrieves the text from the clipboard text = clipboard.GetData(DataFormats.Text) as string; } if (backupClipboad != null) { Clipboard.SetDataObject(backupClipboad, true); // throws exception } } I am using the System.Windows.Clipboard and not the System.Windows.Forms.Clipboard. The reason for this was that when I performed the CTRL-C, the Clipboard class from System.Windows.Forms did not return any data, but the system clipboard did. I looked into some of the low level user32 calls like OpenClipboard, EmptyClipboard, and CloseClipboard hoping that they would help my do this but so far I keep getting COM exceptions when trying to restore. I thought perhaps this had to do with the OpenClipboard parameter which is expecting an IntPtr window handle of the application which wants to take control of the clipboard. Since I mentioned that my application does not have a GUI this is a challenge. I wasn't sure what to pass here. Maybe someone can shed some light on that? Am I using the Clipboard class incorrectly? Is there a clear way to obtain the IntPtr window handle of an application with no GUI? Does anyone know of a better way to backup and restore the system clipboard?

• Dynatree multi - selection implementaion ala Windows style

  I would like to implement windows style multi-selection: when user holds CTRL key and selects several nodes of the tree. Dynatree (from here http://wwwendt.de/tech/dynatree/doc/dynatree-doc.html) by default has checkboxes for node selection which my client doesn't seem to like. My question is, is it possible to implement what I need using provided set of callbacks? also, curently, when I hold CTRL key and click on the node, it opens a new window. Is there any way to suppress this functionality? i am guess I would have to do through CSS?
