  • Comparing multiple revisions of the same C File

    Hi, I just wondered if anyone had any tricks or programs they used when comparing two of the same file but different versions? I appear to have foolishly made a modification at some point today (Went a few hours without running any tests) and it has stopped the whole project working - without throwing up any errors so it must be subtle whatever I have done. I just thought that there must be a program out there that might highlight differences etc. Otherwise, a step by step search might be in order! Thanks

  • Unused frame(window) management

    Hey guys, I'm rewriting my game now using software designing patterns and want to do the code, most correct I can. While implementing MVC(Model View Controller) I got a question which I would like to discuss or to hear some opinions of experts. The question is about management of unused frames... For example next sequence of windows: ResourceLoadingWindow - LoginWindow - GameWindow Definetly that I don't want to reuse ResourceLoadingWindow , since I'm using Java Applet and I don't see any situation when I will need to reuse it. The different story is about LoginWindow, which can be reused a lot of times, because some player would want to Logout and come back again in few minutes for example. I would like to know, following the MVC structure, should I destroy window, removing it from ContentPane or just hide? Maybe I need to unregister it from controller or I shouldn't do so?   • What things need to be considered when redeveloping the whole UI for a web app?

    I am the lead developer on a thick client web app (Java swing) which we're looking at recreating as a web app. We're part way through some initial work, have chosen a framework on the server and integrated with our previous backend code. We're just starting to get into the client side of things, looking at javascript frameworks etc. The previous system was pretty sensibly architected so the logic is already serverside. The challenge ahead of us is really about redeveloping the user interface rather than anything else. What would be the list of things to consider in redeveloping the entire user interface for any application? I'm trying to get an idea of how large a task might still be ahead of me and the team.

  • Gnome 3: Moving the status(?) icons to the top

    I'm not sure of any of the terminology, so I'll have to explain things simply, to make sure you understand what I'm saying. I'm using Gnome 3, and when I bring the mouse to the bottom right of the screen, a bar pops up, with icons of some things that are running in the background (at the moment, mine has "Update Manager", "Removable Devices", "caffeine-cup"). Is there any way to move these items to the bar at the top of the screen, alongside the icons for volume, network connectivity and universal access (how do I get rid of that btw)? Thanks

I am aware of HTML, CSS and JavaScript (also jQuery and YUI) but I have never been able to master them so that I can develop efficient and maintainable solutions much quicker than how I do now. Can other UI developers give me any tips/resources? I also wanted to learn about patterns and best practices for UI development.

  • Touch friendly GUI in Windows Mobile

    I'm porting an audio processing application written in C++ from Windows to Windows Mobile (version 5+). Basically what I need to port is the GUI. The application is quite complicated and the GUI will need to be able to offer a lot of functionality. I would like to create a touch friendly user interface that also looks good. Which basically means that standard WinMo controls are out the window. I've looked at libraries such as Fluid and they look like something I would like to use. However, as I said I'm developing i C++. Even though it would be possible to only write the GUI part i some .NET language I rather not. My experience with .NET on Windows Mobile is that it doesn't work very well... Can anyone either suggest a C/C++ touch friendly GUI library for Windows Mobile or some kind of "best practices" document/how-to on how to use the standard Windows Mobile controls in order to make the touch friendly and also work and look well in later versions of Windows Mobile (in particular version 6.5)?

    Hello everyone, Trying to run a time consuming task from a wxpython GUI. The basic idea is to start the long time task from the GUI (pressing a button) and then, a static text on the dialog should be updated from it. First I tried some threading (http://wiki.wxpython.org/LongRunningTasks and many other resourses seen), and I want to show back the messages using Publisher.class. It didn't went so well, after a message or two, the GUI seems to frozen. Now I want to achieve that with multiprocessing. I have this method inside my 'GUI' class: def do_update(self, e): self.txt_updatemsg.SetLabel("Don't stop this \n") ... pub = Publisher() # i tried also calling directly from dbob object # Publisher() is a singleton so this must be useless? pub.subscribe(self.__update_txt_message, ('updatedlg', 'message')) dbob = dbutils.DBUtils() # DBUtils is the class with 'long time' tasks dbob.publisher = pub p = Process(target=self.do_update_process, args=(dbob,)) p.start() while p.is_alive: wx.Yield def do_update_process(self, dbob): dbob.do_update() __update_txt_message is a simple function what sets the static text on dialog.     Trying to use the 7-zip self extracting archive GUI and it fails. When I try to create a "Self Extracting Installer" option, at the end of the install it runs my batch file and it appears to be extracting all the files just before it does that, but after extraction, the files are nowhere to be found (except within the .7z archive). Any idea on why this occurs? https://code.google.com/p/sfx-creator/

    I've learned today, if you append to your query OPTION (MAXDOP 0) your query will run on multiple processors and if it's huge query, query will perform faster. I know general guidelines on query optimizations (using indexes, selecting only needed fields etc.), my question is about SQL Server optimization. Maybe changing some options in configurations or anything else. What guidelines are there for SQL Server Optimization? Thank you.

These methods allow a user to vote a post up or down; kinda like the vote up/down functionality for StackOverflow questions. I know the easiest would be to create a separate spec for it too, but it'd be copying and pasting the same code yet again... I'm still getting the hang of BDD (and MSpec) and many times it is not clear which way I should go, or what the best practices or guidelines for BDD are. Any help would be appreciated.

  • ASP.NET MVC application architecture "guidelines"

    I'm looking for some feedback on my ASP.NET MVC based CMS application architecture. Domain Model - depends on nothing but the System classes to define types. For now, mostly anemic. Repository Layer - abstracted data access, only called by the services layer Services Layer - performs business logic on domain models. Exposes view models to the controllers. ViewModelMapper - service that translates back and forth between view models and domain models Controllers - super thin "traffic cop" style functionality that interacts with the service layer and only talks in terms of view models, never domain models My domain model is mostly used as data transfer (DTO) objects and has minimal logic at the moment. I'm finding this is nice because it depends on nothing (not even classes in the services layer). The services layer is a bit tricky... I only want the controllers to have access to viewmodels for ease of GUI programming. However, some of the services need to talk to each other. For example, I have an eventing service that notifies other listener services when content is tagged, when blog posts are created, etc. Currently, the methods that take domain models as inputs or return them are marked internal so they can't be used by the controllers. Sounds like overkill? Not enough abstraction? I'm mainly doing this as a learning exercise in being strict about architecture, not for an actual product, so please no feedback along the lines of "right depends on what you want to do". thanks!   • any real MVC library in PHP (for GUI apps)

    I'm wondering if there are any abstraction frameworks for one of the PHP gui libraries. We have PHP-GTK, a PHP/Tk interface, and seemingly also PHP-QT. (Not tried any.) I know that writing against the raw Gtk+ interface in Python is just bearable, and it therefore seems not very enticing for PHP. I assume it's the same for Qt, and Tk is pretty low-level too. So I'm looking for something that provides a nicer object structure atop any of the three. Primarily TreeViews are always a chore and php-gtk callbacks are weird in PHP, so I'd like a simplification for that. If it eases adding the GUI/View atop my business logic without much control code, that might already help. And so since GUI apps are an area where MVC or MVP would actually make sense, I'd like to know if any library for that exists. Btw, recently rediscovered PHP interface preprocessor, but that's rather low-level and just provides a simple widget/interface abstraction for Gtk/ncurses/pdf/xhtml output.

  • Seeking a GUI auto-format feature for T-SQL

    Is there a freely available GUI tool that will allow interaction with Microsoft SQL Server (via T-SQL) that provides an auto-format feature? I constantly find myself writing queries in SQL Query Analyzer (Microsoft’s standard GUI tool for T-SQL) and cutting/pasting the whole thing into SQLyog (a GUI tool for MySQL), where I can press F12 and have it reformatted into an easily readable, industry standard format. I then cut/paste this back into Query Analyzer to execute. I do this all the time at work and haven’t been able to find an alternative. I realize that SQLyog is no longer free software, but what I’m looking for is a specific alternative to a MS SQL Server interface (with auto-formatting). Thanks in advance for your help.
