  Can Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web Edition be used in "closed" websites, which are hosted on the Internet, but require users to log in? We are developing a web application for banks. This is a website for clients of the bank; it allows clients to log in and view information on their personal banking accounts, stock portfolios, etc. Can this web app use SQL Server 2008 Web Edition? Here is information on this edition of SQL Server: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/web.aspx It is said on this page that Web Edition can be used only on "public and Internet accessible ... Web applications". Technically, the web app we are developing is public and Internet accessible - although it requires authentication. Won't using Web Edition in our web app violate SQL Server license terms? Thank you.

  I'm creating a GUI in R using gWidgets (more specifically gWidgetstcltk). I'd like to know how to update the contents of selection-type widgets, such as gdroplist and gtable. I currently have a rather hackish method of deleting the widget and re-creating it. I'm sure there's a better way.   I have implemented a small ordering and stock control system (for internal using) with the MVC 2 framework. Now my friends, they want to have a website to present the existing products for their customers. I know, I know they will ask me to do this one day. So in the beginning, I have made the controller name to start with "Admin". But now I am not sure the best way to implement their requirements. Could you advise me? 1.For the security reason, I did not allowed anonymous user to access the website a part from the CSS and image files. My question is the controllers' name are not folders' name, how could I set this up? 2.I'm planning to put the admin section into an "area" and will it be a good way to go?   I have an asp.net page where two grid views are available showing current stock market price updates. I need to update these two grid views every 20 seconds. So I was thinking of using JQuery to do this job. What I need is a timer which will fire every 20 seconds, send an ajax request to the servers, bring the order lists from the server using json and then update those two grid views. If a request to the server is still being served 20 seconds after it is fired, then I want the old one to be aborted without causing any trouble. I already know how to bring objects using json. I just need to figure out how to send a request every 20 seconds and cancel a request if it is still being server for 20 seconds.

  Hello All, Could someone please advise in the context of a ASP.Net application is a shared/static function common to all users? If for example you have a function Public shared function GetStockByID(StockID as Guid) as Stock Is that function common to all current users of your application? Or is the shared function only specific to the current user and shared in the context of ONLY that current user? So more specifically my question is this, besides database concurrency issues such as table locking do I need to concern myself with threading issues in shared functions in an ASP.Net application? In my head; let’s say my application namespace is MyTestApplicationNamespace. Everytime a new user connects to my site a new instance of the MyTestApplicationNamespace is created and therefore all shared functions are common to that instance and user but NOT common across multiple users. Is this correct?

  I have a report that I need to parse/scrape for loading into an alternate or query-able data store. The report looks like something akin to: this. My gut is that PERL would do a decent job, but I have several different permutations of the report and I don't really want to make a script around each form. This report is a pretty stock type report, and I have seen where Monarch Pro can parse these types of reports, but I have had a difficult time finding alternatives to how these could be parsed since I'm looking to do this working primarily in a Linux environment. Any suggestions?

• Mono Ignores Graphics.InterpolationMode?

  I have a program that draws some vector graphics using System.Drawing and the Graphics class. The anti-aliasing works, kindof okay, but for my need I neede oversampling, so I create the starting image to be n times larger and then scale back the final image by n. On Window and .NET the resulting image looks great! However, on Mono 2.4.2.3 (Ubuntu 9.10 stock install), the intropolation is horrible. Here's how I'm scaling my images: Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(Bmp.Width / OverSampling, Bmp.Height / OverSampling); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bmp); g.InterpolationMode = InterpolationMode.HighQualityBicubic; g.DrawImage(Bmp, 0, 0, bmp.Width, bmp.Height); g.Dispose(); From what I can tell there is no interpolation happening at all. Any ideas?

• External GUI/Helper Library for Visual C++?

  I am looking for some kind of library, either open source or bought in, that provides advanced GUI components, helper functions & classes etc. It needs to be something that integrates relatively easily into Visual Studio, and should be based around C++ and Windows. Cross platform isn't needed, and can somtimes make things a little more complex and restricted than single platform, but it is still acceptable. It also needs to be up-to-date and active. There appears to be a number of 'retired' libraries that offer little or no support, so these would not be suitable, as I'm going to need help every now and then! It also needs good documentation. I know about wxWidgets but I'm wondering what other alternatives there are? At first glance, wxWidgets doesn't strike me as what I want/need, especially in the GUI area where the visual components seem striking similar to the stock components. I want more custimization! Is there much out there that meets these requirements?

  I want to set a global uncaught exception handler for all the threads in my Android application. So, in my Application subclass I set an implementation of Thread.UncaughtExceptionHandler as default handler for uncaught exceptions. Thread.setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler( new DefaultExceptionHandler(this)); In my implementation, I am trying to display an AlertDialog displaying appropriate exception message. However, this doesn't seem to work. Whenever, an exception is thrown for any thread which goes un-handled, I get the stock, OS-default dialog (Sorry!-Application-has-stopped-unexpectedly dialog). What is the correct and ideal way to set a default handler for uncaught exceptions? Thanks.

• <embed> in HTML loaded by Webview Broken in Sense UI

  I have a WebView that loads HTML that contains an <embed>. When loading in stock android (G1, NexusOne, Ion, etc) it looks fine and can be clicked on to watch it in the YouTube app. But when loading it using either the HTC EVO or Incredible (both Sense UI phones ) the space where the content should be is completely blank. Try this code below... Any ideas? I'm stumped. Certainly looks like an HTC Sense bug? To show the images , i have made one table and i have put labels in that and then i am setting the icon at the label. Now as soon as user click on the any image, then that image i put on big label. But this works perfect on mouse click but client want that , if user navigate the by keyboard arrow keys then in same should be happen. Means : User navigate by key board then it should reflect on that table [user should know that which is currently seleted ] and then as soon as the user navigate by key board arrow events and then click enter then that image should reflect on big label. • Can't find Peopleware anywhere?

  Many folks say that Peopleware is one of the best books for software professionals and managers, as I see a lot of people recommending it in the "have to read list." The strange thing is that I can't find a bookstore anywhere that actually has it. I found it on Amazon, but Borders, Barnes & Nobles, etc. don't have it and keep telling me it's out of print. Can anyone shed some light on whats going on here? Amazon doesn't stock it, it says its available from a few 3rd party sellers, but I tried two of them and both of them eventually refunded me and cancelled the order after stalling for a month.

  Data is fairly large and takes few minutes to run it every time, so its taking a lot of time debugging this problem. When I run like concat('%',T.item,'%') on smaller data it seems to identify items properly. • What causes extra space and random alignment in my divs using the 960 grid system?

  I have an issue where elements in divs seemingly align randomly, not responding to any align tag, and where divs create extra space above or below its element. I'm using the 960 grid system and I have not altered the stock CSS file lest my fingers blow it up. I've put up a test page here, and please excuse some of the dodgy code :-D It's still in it's very early stages (as am I), but I don't feel I can move on until I can comfortably understand what is causing the issue. The best example on that page is the bottom horizontal bar and elements underneath. The bar adds a few pixels of dead space, and the elements below that align to different parts of their respective divs. Why is it that elements seemingly do not standardise their alignment given no instruction, and what causes extra space again where no instruction was given? My own thought was to relatively position everything individually, but I'm worried this will cause issues and 'break' the grid. Other than that, I unno. Thanks

  I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

• SQL server db and printing confusion.

  I have billing application based on C# WPF, Screenshot is here. as you can see there is a datagrid, programmatically binded. this datagrid contains lists of item going to be billed. So when user reaches "Print memo" part (in stack panel 2) i have to update listed items in stock table and insert entries in sales table and finally print the memo. I want to know is there any speedy way to so because as user gives print command I have to clear datagrid which holds product lists and start accepting new lists. if you could provide few code or link, will be really helpful.. thanks.........

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Client Side Validation doesn't work as advertised in VS2010

  In VS2010 and ASP.NET MVC 2, it seems that client-side validation (JQuery Futures or the stock option) doesn't quite work as advertised. I'm noticing that "tabbing off" a validated element will not invoke the client-side validation as promised. For a required field, you have to tab into the element, enter something, then remove it completely, in order to trigger the required validation. That's not really what I'm after here, and I'm hoping it's just a configuration issue on my side. How do I get the validation effects from previous versions so that a previous value isn't necessary (without having to modify the client-side scripts if possible)?

  What happened to Java and Sun? The community surrounding them had some of my favorite tools and software to develop with. The Java platform anyway, still looked like it had some promise to it: Groovy and Grails. Why does all of this seem to be going the way of the dodo lately? (Yes, I know their stock price is dropping badly.) Is it just the economy? Or did the lack of cohesion (i.e., not settling on a framework) among the community finally lead to its demise?

  I have a user defined function called Sync_CheckData under Scalar-valued functions in Microsoft SQL Server. What it actually does is to check the quantity of issued product and balance quantity are the same. If something is wrong, returns an ErrorStr nvarchar(255). Output Example: Balance Stock Error for Product ID : 4 From the above string, I want to get 4 so that later on I can SELECT the rows which is giving errors by using WHERE clause (WHERE Product_ID = 4). Which SQL function can I use to get the substring?
