  • Is there a general rule of thumb for which browsers to optimize your site for?

    I have a site (recently relaunched it with a new design) that I have put off optimizing for ie7 for far too long. I was just never too worried about it. The site is optimized for ie8-10, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, etc.. Then I asked myself, is it even worth it? I checked traffic over the last couple months before the relaunch and about 1.3% of the traffic is coming from ie7. So, is there a general cuttoff percentage when you would not optimize for a specific browser?

  • SSL Certificate is Untrusted... sometimes

    Web Designer I'm working with signed up a new client that needed an SSL certificate. We went to namecheap.com and purchased on from Comodo. Got all the needed files and set it up in ISPConfig. To test we used Windows 7 running IE8, Firefox 3.6, and Chrome 12, and then on OSX with Firefox 4, Safari 5, and Chrome 13. All of them worked fine. The client is getting 'This connection is untrusted' in Firefox 4 and 5. Safari works fine on their machine. On my machines and the designer's machines all works with no errors. I had the client forward me the info for the certificate that Firefox has and the fingerprints match up. I have an old Windows 2000 VM with IE6 and Chrome and those work just fine as well. Any ideas on what else to check or do? The server is running Debian 5.0, up-to-date, with Apache 2 and ISPConfig 3.3

    Internet Explorer ( ie8, ie9 ) is mangling downloads from this blog. Links to files on this blog ( eg., dirstats ) are typically downloaded using browser:  R-click, SaveAs This works fine on Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  Internet Explorer is not handling the html reference to the file, and adds .html to the filename.   The file will be saved in an incorrect format.   Relatively harmless for a script file that is plain text, but binary files like obiaix.tar.gz , will be corrupted, and there is nothing you can do about it. "Don't get corrupted, get rid of cable  Internet Explorer, use firefox"  ( sorry, US TV advert reference ) The useful part of the compressed tar file is that you don't have to worry about Windows line-end characters corrupting the scripts, and you don't have to change execution permissions to get the scripts to work. dos2unix dirstats   chmod +x dirstats

    I'm currently trying to use JavaScript to find out how far down the page the user has scrolled; for Firefox 8.0, the keyword is pageYOffset. To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position?     I came across this column sizing weirdness the other day. Using a RadGrid the headers looked great. The rows with the data however sized however they felt like it, usually way too small. After looking around I came across this that solved my problem. Adding the meta tag of <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /> in the head section of my aspx page was what I needed. My issue was pretty specific since I had to target IE8 for the app I was working on but it may apply to other scenarios as well. Tags: ASP.Net

  • computationally expensive flash blocking javascript events

    When I have a computationally expensive flash animation running in my page, sometimes javascript keyUp listeners on a textfield are not being fired. Keydown events are not lost. This only happens in IE8 (and IE7 in compatibility mode). I need those keyup listeners! How can I solve / workaround this problem? Ideas: query the textfield myself (without the broken listener) if the key is down or up? can I do this?

    Hi, I have a login control on my homepage (http://www.xyz.com) which makes a JSON login request over HTTPS (https://www.xyz.com/json.ashx). This seems to work fine in Firefox and IE7. But IE8 gives a 'permission denied' error for jquery.min.js I have verified that this call works fine if its solely over http or https. Is the call considered 'cross-domain' if it is between the http and https sections of the site? How can I resolve this problem? Thanks, Murali

    I noticed that if you wrap a radio button or checkbox in a label, the whole thing becomes clickable, even without a for/id pair (in fact, it seems to ignore this because I screwed it up!) Example: <label><input type="checkbox"> some text</label> Then "some text" becomes clickable to check the box. I tested it in FF, Chrome and Opera, and IE8, does anyone know if it works in older browsers, like IE6?

Some things don't work at all with ie7(eg BlindUp), and some validations fail with ie8 and firefox 3.5. Any success stories to contradict this ? (Any tips will be appreciated).

    See: Page I am having problems with IE, In FF and Chrome the navigation at the top displays fine. However in IE8 (with or without compatibility) the UL seems to indent from the left hand side, not each li just the whole li; despite declaring text-align:center; width:600px; margin:auto; padding-left:0;.     Hi everyone, I have a bit of a problem with a navbar not displaying correctly in IE6. http://classicpartsltd.com/ - this is the page, and if you hover over a nav item such as 'Goggles' in IE6 you will see that some of the list items are showing up, but that they will in IE7 and IE8...
