• Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

  Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long. A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time. • Custom widgets/controls in application indicators

  I want to develop an app for ubuntu, that integrates inside the calendar indicator/menu. It should allow to enter info right from it, and have several controls like input boxes, drop downs, spinners and buttons. Is this possible to integrate/replace the standard date/time indicator? If not, is it possible to create it as a separate indicator that when clicked opens a popup with all the controls and stuff? I want it to look as part of the sys tray and not as a separate desktop app. I'm using Quickly for this. Thanks for your help!

  As a developer/software engineer, what would you say are the most helpful resources when attempting to learn and use a new system? If you had to integrate a new SDK into your codebase/application, which one of the following options would you much rather go with? documentation tutorials video tutorials Same question for learning a new framework (e.g. writing an iOS app, learning Python, integrating the Android SDK, etc.). I'm not referring to becoming an expert, just get to know enough to use a system/language/framework properly. This is a pretty general question, but I think it's very relevant to anyone who's doing engineering work, since learning how to use new systems quickly is a very important skill to have. Thank you!

• Powermapper alternatives and google analytics?

  Whats a good application to map the hierarchical structure of a website and maybe get some google analytic action going on? Powermapper is pretty expensive and the trial version didnt seem particularly good at importing google analytics CSV files as advertised. In fact, out of the 1000 pages mapped, exactly 0 were successfully imported. I dont really need all the features Powermapper offers anyway, so the price tag is a bit much. All I really need is like, a simple visual representation of my (automatically generated) site structure (like a hierarchical site structure) and the ability to integrate my google analytic stats (page views mostly) with it.

• ASP.NET - Password Strength Indicator using jQuery and XML

  Last week, I had the opportunity to help implement and integrate a strong password policy into the legacy web application developed using ASP technology. The solution I proposed was to use jQuery to display the password strength meter to help users create strong passwords. One of my colleagues asked if we would have to modify multiple pages and files if the client decided to alter the password policy. The answer is no. Thanks to jQuery, the client-side script and code behind can share the same information. The password policy information is stored in an XML file and the client-side script and code behind are reading from this to perform the password strength validation.

• How to offer a cookie opt in/out to users?

  I intend to use google analyticts, and as I understand it I will need to offer users the option to opt out of cookies. The question is this: I HATE these constant cookie option boxes, everyone I ask it getting annoyed by them too. Its nice to have the option, but we all know they have been in use for well over a decade. So - how big of a deal do I have to make about the fact that I'm using GoogleAn? can I pop a small link at the bottom of the page, maybe integrate it into "Privacy policies" page, and give people the option to opt out there? This would be very much the "Assume the majority of users don't mind, but at least make the option available" stance. Ironically setting a cookie seems to be the only way I can see to enforce the opt-out! as IP's change.

  Is it possible to integrate any kind of Lightbox with SimpleViewer? But I don't want to display SimpleViewer in Lightbox. I want to Lightbox show when I click on one of the images in SimpleViewer. Does anyone tried that with success? EDIT I have a SimpleViewer page now. I just want to bind handler to clicking an image (as normally in HTML based pages), fetch big image url and show that image (not SimpleViewer!) in Ligthbox/ThickBox/FancyBox etc.

  So I've gone with a somewhat singleton approach to my game class: #include "myGame.h" int main () { myGame game; return game.Execute(); } But now I need to define a class that accesses variables in the instance of myGame. class MotionState { public: virtual void setWorldTransform (...) { VariableFromMyGameClass++; //<-- !? ...} }; I'm trying to integrate this class into my project from an example that just uses globals. How can I access variables of myGame class in the definition of new classes? Should I give up on my singleton approach?

  I am good at C programming and also I am good at embedded devices. I have setup an embedded circuit myself using the basic arduino and by interfacing some devices with it. But the main problem is that I do not know where and how to start programming this device with the known C programming skills. The device has an on chip boot loader. By "start programming", I mean how to bring the embedded device into my programming and stuff. I know program starts from a main() and an infinite loop makes the application run. I won’t be doing a new project for awhile at work, but I’ll definitely be looking into this more when I get the time.

  I have a Fantasy F1 Website, currently users select their teams using dropdown menus. It works OK but isn't as user friendly as I would like. I would like to implement a drag and drop type of system, there's jQuery code out there that would go part of the way to allowing me to do this: http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable/ But I am not sure about how to integrate that into PHP and MySQL, my jQuery skills are limited! I'd also need to stop them spending more than a certain amount of money, each driver has a value and the teams can only spend a certain amount of money. There's also limits for example you can only pick a driver once, but you can have three different drivers. Finally, how would you decide that the user had picked their team, I don't want a submit button as that kind of defeats the object of the exercise! Thanks for any advice, I don't expect anyone to write the code for me but some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

• Libreoffice theme integration not working (Xubuntu)

  I am running Xubuntu 11.10 and everything works nicely. I have selected a nice Xfce theme and everything looks beautiful, except Libreoffice. While other programmes (Gimp, Inkscape, Thunar etc.) integrate with the selected Appearance & Window Manager theme, Libreoffice looks like a Windows 98 programme. Does anyone know how to fix this?   I'm a newbie developer on WebTrends Analytics, although I have worked extensively on Adobe SiteCatalyst. Currently I want to integrate WebTrends with the web pages of a local project on my local JBoss EAP application server, so that I can run it locally and see how WebTrends work, along with how the Analytics reports show up. Later on, I may customize the reports data as per the project requirements. However, I can't find anywhere how I can start working on a local development process using a DEV account access.   I currently use AnkhSVN to integrate subversion into Visual Studio. Is there any reason I should switch to VisualSVN? AnkhSVN is free (in more than one sense of the word) while VisualSVN costs $50.
