• SSRS mysterious extra pages

  I have two reports that are setup with the same page dimensions- A4 portrait, with page margins of 1cm. When I run the reports seperately and print them they both come out as expected: fitting into the width constraint of the page. However, when I include one report as a subreport in the other and then run and print the "master" report I start to experience problems. Even though both reports appear I get extra blank pages appearing every other page in the output. I'm sure I'm missing a simple trick - probably with the page sizes of the two reports but I can't figure it out - any pointers? I don't mind changing the setup of the subreport as it will never be run as a seperate eport in the wild, I only included that step to prove that it did indeed fit within the page!

• Win32: No Window Appears

  I was programming the example code from Frank Luna's book "Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 10". The code is the first Win32 example in the Appendix A: Windows Programming section. Right now, the program compiles under both VC++ 2008/2010, but no window appears, although the debug session has started and I have to forcefully close it. I have no idea where it is, I'm not using Win32 Console mode, I have closed all other windows and no other IDE or session of VC++ is running. Any idea why this might be happening? PS: I have also checked my Processes. It is indeed running.

• xcode scripting language

  i notice that Java has a number of ancillary scripting languages. Clojure and Groovy for example. My understanding is that these can be used when the full might and power of Java does not need to be applied and a speedy cludge can be hacked in Groovy/Clojure. But at the end of the day the scripting tools contribution gets compiled into the application Question 1) Is there a similar scripting in x-code? I was not so interested in Python or Ruby in this situation as they are languages in their own right added in, as indeed i think can happen in Java, but i was looking for a purpose built tools. Question 2) If there is such a tool would it count the application out vis-a-vis the new Apple guidelines as to what can be used to generate iXxx apps?

• Is NoSQL ideal to store stats?

  I'm not terribly familiar with NoSQL systems, but I remember reading a while back that they are ideal to handle statistical data. Since I'm about to start writing code that will record data like "how many users were registered on each day", I was thinking I could use this as an opportunity to learn more about NoSQL if it fits the bill. If NoSQL is indeed ideal for this, could you provide me with some information as to why? And which specific systems are best suited for this particular need? Thanks!

  Sometime back, while working on some project, I found a lot of challenges in developing my ideas into a viable and really useful solution. But along the way, I developed more passion for seeing the system work - actually, I wrote in my eDiary "...I want to see this child of mine grow...". The work did mature indeed, and is now a successful system employed in analysis of academic progress in my client's schools. What am really wondering is whether it might help me more (or even other programmers) if this notion of approaching software development as if it were a task of raising one's child could help deliver better software and probably more lovable software :)

• How to make a file with .pt extension, with xml syntax highlighting and vim's plugin snipmate load p

  I have the following in my .vimrc: au BufNewFile,BufRead *.pt set filetype=xml This is needed because although I'm editing a file with *.pt extension, it's indeed a valid xml file: setting the filetype like this I can have syntax highlighting. I'm using vim's snipmate plugin, and tried to create pt.snippets to specific needs since these files are Zope Page Templates (ZPT with TAL). Now, I have a problem: I don't want to create these snippets in xml.snippets, since they aren't really generic xml snippets, but my *.pt files are set to xml, so when I define my pt snippets they aren't loaded unless I run :set filetype=pt on my pt file on vim - but then I lose syntax highlighting. I would like to be able to have a pt file, with xml syntax highlighting, to be able to load a pt.snippets file from snipmate. How can I do it? (I would like to avoid putting my snippets in a generic snippet file, I would like it to be present only in pt.snippets to be easier to maintain.)

• Removing items from lists and all references to them.

  I'm facing a situation where I have dependent objects and I would like to be able to remove an object and all references to it. Say I have an object structure like the code below, with a Branch type which references two Nodes. public class Node { // Has Some Data! } public class Branch { // Contains references to Nodes public Node NodeA public Node NodeB } public class Graph { public List<Node> Nodes; public List<Branch> Branches; } If I remove a Node from the Nodes list in the Graph class, it is still possible that one or more Branch objects still contains a reference to the removed Node, thus retaining it in memory, whereas really what I would quite like would be to set any references to the removed Node to null and let the garbage collection kick in. Other than enumerating through each Branch and checking each Node reference sequentially, are there any smart ideas on how I remove references to the Node in each Branch instance AND indeed any other class which reference the removed Node?

In fact, I have no experience in creating cookies in JS, only in PHP. Could someone come up with an example of how to make cookies the simpliest way remembering my option, but whenever someone clicks another one, it should get rid of the cookie that was last set, e.g. Cookie value has 15px, then should update it or remove it with a new cookie with a new value of 13px and so on. • Sql server management studio reporting "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

  On our development sql server, executing any query containing more than approximately 700 characters stalls for about 10 seconds and then reports the following error: Msg 121, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) for example, this query select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 700 spaces ..) ' fails fails with the timeout error while this one select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 600 spaces ..) ' fails with the expected Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier. - immediately. Indeed, throwing any query, including random garbage at our dev sql server exhibits this behaviour, while any other sql server I have available acts as expected, so I would think that the query never actually gets to parsing on the server. I'm at a loss here - any hints?

• Child service not writing to event log

  I am having a very simple (but incredibly frustrating) issue with a parent service and the child service. Let's call the parent service "Service A" and the child "Service B". Both services reside on the same box. Using WCF Storm, when I send Service B a message, I see lots of entries in the event viewer for it. However, if I send a message to Service A, which calls Service B, I only see entries from Service A. So for some reason, the child logs are not written when the parent calls it, but if I call it myself, the logs do indeed show up, so I know it's not a problem with the logging or anything like that. Here is what I am using to write to the event log. // in some random static class private static EventLog el = new EventLog(); el.WriteEntry("In " + location + ", " + message); // params passed in Does anyone know why this is happening? • write.table in R screws up header when has rownames

  Hello, check this example: > a = matrix(1:9, nrow = 3, ncol = 3, dimnames = list(LETTERS[1:3], LETTERS[1:3])) > a A B C A 1 4 7 B 2 5 8 C 3 6 9 the table displays correctly. There are two different ways of writing it to file... write.csv(a, 'a.csv') which gives as expected: "","A","B","C" "A",1,4,7 "B",2,5,8 "C",3,6,9 and write.table(a, 'a.txt') which screws up "A" "B" "C" "A" 1 4 7 "B" 2 5 8 "C" 3 6 9 indeed, an empty tab is missing.... which is a pain in the butt for downstream things. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there a workaround? (other than write.table(cbind(rownames(a), a), 'a.txt', row.names=FALSE) Cheers, yannick

  Hello app engineers! I'm on an app engine project where I'd like to put in a link to a Javascript test runner that I'd like to only exist when running the development server. I've made some experiments on a local shell with configuration loaded using the technique found in NoseGAE versus live on the 'App Engine Console' [1] and it looks to me like a distinction btw real instance and dev server is the presence of the module google.appengine.tools. Which lead me to this utility function: def is_dev(): """ Tells us if we're running under the development server or not. :return: ``True`` if the code is running under the development server. • Distance between hyperplanes

  I'm trying to teach myself some machine learning, and have been using the MNIST database (http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/mnist/) do so. The author of that site wrote a paper in '98 on all different kinds of handwriting recognition techniques, available at http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-98.pdf. The 10th method mentioned is a "Tangent Distance Classifier". The idea being that if you place each image in a (NxM)-dimensional vector space, you can compute the distance between two images as the distance between the hyperplanes formed by each where the hyperplane is given by taking the point, and rotating the image, rescaling the image, translating the image, etc. I can't figure out enough to fill in the missing details. I understand that most of these are indeed linear operators, so how does one use that fact to then create the hyperplane? And once we have a hyperplane, how do we take its distance with other hyperplanes?

• TextView would not horizontally center

  My layout is the following: <TextView android:id="@+id/display_city" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:layout_above="@+id/pollenType" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_below="@+id/get_pollen_index" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:layout_marginTop="51dp" android:textSize="40sp" /> As you can tell, Philadelphia, PA is left-aligned. No matter what I change, whether it's centering horizontal and vertical to true, it stays left-aligned. I have tried changing the layout via the XML and graphical user interface. In the graphical user interface, it indeed is "centered", but it remains non-centered. My layout positions are consistent across all my textviews, so I am unsure as to why this particular TextView is not centered.

  Hi, I'm making a simple cms system for a site I'm making for non-tech users to edit... So far so good but when I try and run this code I keep getting: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''pages' ORDER BY 'pages'.'pageOrder' ASC LIMIT 0 , 30' at line 1 By the error it looks like a problem with the order by section and indeed it works without it... $sql = "SELECT * FROM 'pages' ORDER BY 'pages'.'pageOrder' ASC LIMIT 0 , 30"; $result = mysql_query($sql) or die(mysql_error()); Now I know there is nothing wrong with the code because originally I wrote my own SQL but then after it failed I robbed some from phpmyadmin and it still gives the error but it works in phpmyadmin... I'm really at my wits end with this, help is very much appreciated thank you...

  I'm starting out in the world of SpecFlow and I have come across my first problem. In terms of keeping my code DRY I'd like to do the following: Have two scenarios: Given I am on a product page And myfield equals todays date Then... Given I am on a product page And myfield equals todays date plus 4 days Then... I was hoping to use the following Step Definition to cover both variants of my And clause: [Given(@"myfield equals todays date(?: (plus|minus) (\d+) days)?")] public void MyfieldEqualsTodaysDate(string direction, int? days) { //do stuff } However I keep getting exceptions when SpecFlow tries to parse the int? param. I've checked the regular expression and it definitely parses the scenario as expected. I'm aware that I could so something as crude as method overloading etc, I was just wondering if SpecFlow supported the idea of default parameter values, or indeed another way to achieve the same effect. • Does the box API require case-sensitive booleans?

  I'm having some issues with the box.com developer API, and it seems that this is due to the API requiring lower-case booleans in request parameters. When I make a call to say, delete a folder, the URI my framework is generating looks like this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=True This doesn't work, and the API throws an error. However, if I manually set the URI to this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=true Everything seems to work just fine. I'd like to confirm that this is indeed the behavior, and if it is, I'd like to request box fix their API!

• UITableViewController setting delegates and datasource

  Hi iOS gurus, I'm a little bit confused about UITableViewController... As far as I concern they are typically the delegate and datasource of the UITableView (although it can be made such that they are different). However in some cases, like when embedding a UITableViewController in a UITabBarViewController in Interface Builder, we initiate our table view controller in IB. Therefore in my understanding, the default initialiser is being called. But in this case, I have this piece of code: @interface Settings : UITableViewController { } And in the IB I see that the delegate and datasource of the UITableView is hooked up to this class. My question is, why is it that we don't need to explicitly say that it is following: @interface Settings : UITableViewController <UITableViewDelegate, UITableViewDataSource> { } And in the .m file: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [tableView setDelegate:self]; [tableView setDataSource:self]; } I have indeed stumbled upon some cases where I have to explicitly code the above a few times to make something work. Although it is still a mystery for me as of why it is needed...

• Symfony 1.4: Deleting a sfGuardUser

  Hi, I'm having some trouble with the following... I have a sfGuardUser table set up normally, and it has a one-to-one relationship with a Profile table, which contains some additional user info. When a user wants to delete themselves from the site, I'd like to retain their info in the Profile table for various purposes BUT delete the sfGuardUser in order to keep that table cleaner/shorter (not just set it to inactive). I was under the impression that I could set the FK in the Profile table to NULL and then delete the sfGuardUser, but it seems the FK-constraint fails. Indeed, it seems I can't delete either and the queries fail: If I try to delete the sfGuardUser, the Profile table will have an invalid FK If I try to delete a Profile, the sfGuardUser will have an invalid FK Other than leaving outdated sfGuardUsers and Profiles in these tables, or having to use a cascaded delete to get rid of both, can anyone tell me if there's any other way around this? • How can I get reason of page unloading in javascript's onunload event, in IE?

  There may be different reasons of page unloading: 1 User closes the current window. 2 User navigates to another location. 3 Clicks the Back, Forward, Refresh, or Home button. 4 User submits a form, and then browser starts to unload current page and load page with results of form submitting. (Assuming that the current window is the form's target). 5 and so on... Can I somehow know in onunload handler that the reason of unloading is p.4, i.e. moving to page with results of form submitting? I could define some flag when submiting form, but this does not solve the problem. Because response (on form submit) from web server takes some time, browser doesn't unload the current page immediately and waits response from server. And during this waiting user may close window or navigate anywhere. And I need to know whether was it indeed moving to results page or something else...?

• How can I rename by CarrierWave file versions?

  Upon the uploading of an image in my application, 4 different sizes are created and saved using CarrierWaves version functionality. However, I am converting all of these versions to JPEG. The source file that is uploaded remains unchanged. So I can upload a TIFF file, and CarrierWave will create :large, :medium, :small, and :thumb versions. My problem is that these files all still end in .tif. Yet they are indeed JPEG files, as I've verified this with the file command. How can I write the filenames correctly for each version, and ensure that CarrierWave will report each version's name correctly?

• C++/g++: Concurrent programm

  Hi, I got a C++ program (source) that is said to work in parallel. However, if I compile it (I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and g++ 4.4.3) with g++ and run it, one of my two CPU cores gets full load while the other is doing "nothing". So I spoke to the one who gave me the program. I was told that I had to set specific flags for g++ in order to get the program compiled for 2 CPU cores. However, if I look at the code I'm not able to find any lines that point to parallelism. So I have two questions: Are there any C++-intrinsics for multithreaded applications, i.e. is it possible to write parallel code without any extra libraries (because I did not find any non-standard libraries included)? Is it true that there are indeed flags for g++ that tell the compiler to compile the program for 2 CPU cores and to compile it so it runs in parallel (and if: what are they)?

  I have a C++ program that is reading in info from a file, that stores info seperated by "$$$$". An example of how the file looks is: abc bcd $$$$ def $$$$ qwe gfh $$$$ How can I detect the file has ended, without using the eof() function? I have it set like this, getline(sin,temp) if (temp=="$$$$") { } After reading the last set of four dollars, how can I check the next line to ensure another set of data isn't beginning, and that the file has ended? If the file has indeed ended, I plan on using a boolean flag to terminate the while loop.

• Using module include in OCaml

  In OCaml 3.11, I want to "extend" an existing module using the include directive, like so: module MyString = struct include String let trim s = ... end No problem. But now I want to expose this module's type explicitly (i.e. in a .mli file). I want something like this: module MyString : sig include String val trim : string -> string end But the include syntax is not correct because String refers to a module, not a module type (and the compiler does indeed barf). How can I refer to the module type for String here (without having write it out explicitly in a sig expression)? Thanks!
