  • A simple example of validation in ASP.Net applications

    - by nikolaosk
I am going to start a new series of posts and I am going to cover in depth all the validation mechanisms/techniques/controls we have available in our ASP.Net applications. As many of you may know I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer and I will present this series of posts from a trainer's point of view. This series of posts will be helpful to all of novice/intermediate programmers who want to see all the tools available for validating data in ASP.Net applications. I am not going to try to convince...(read more)

  • Runaway version store in tempdb

    - by DavidWimbush
Today was really a new one. I got back from a week off and found our main production server's tempdb had gone from its usual 200MB to 36GB. Ironically I spent Friday at the most excellent SQLBits VI and one of the sessions I attended was Christian Bolton talking about tempdb issues - including runaway tempdb databases. How just-in-time was that?! I looked into the file growth history and it looks like the problem started when my index maintenance job was chosen as the deadlock victim. (Funny how they almost make it sound like you've won something.) That left tempdb pretty big but for some reason it grew several more times. And since I'd left the file growth at the default 10% (aaargh!) the worse it got the worse it got. The last regrowth event was 2.6GB. Good job I've got Instant Initialization on. Since the Disk Usage report showed it was 99% unallocated I went into the Shrink Files dialogue which helpfully informed me the data file was 250MB.  I'm afraid I've got a life (allegedly) so I restarted the SQL Server service and then immediately ran a script to make the initial size bigger and change the file growth to a number of MB. The script complained that the size was smaller than the current size. Within seconds! WTF? Now I had to find out what was using so much of it. By using the DMV sys.dm_db_file_space_usage I found the problem was in the version store, and using the DMV sys.dm_db_task_space_usage and the Top Transactions by Age report I found that the culprit was a 3rd party database where I had turned on read_committed_snapshot and then not bothered to monitor things properly. Just because something has always worked before doesn't mean it will work in every future case. This application had an implicit transaction that had been running for over 2 hours.

  • Security updates for all supported versions of SQL Server

    - by AaronBertrand
It's patch Tuesday! [ UPDATE June 19 : Please see my follow-up post about this security update.] Today Microsoft released a security bulletin covering several issues that could potentially affect SQL Server; these exploits include remote code execution, denial of service, information disclosure and elevation of privilege. You should test these patches on all machines running SQL Server, including those running only client tools (e.g. Management Studio or Management Studio Express). The updates affect...(read more)

  • Restricting logons during certain hours for certain users

    - by simonsabin
Following a an email in a DL I decided to look at implementing a logon restriction system to prevent users from logging on at certain ties of the day. The poster had a solution but wanted to add auditing. I immediately thought of the My post on logging messages during a transaction because I new that part of the logon trigger functionality is that you rollback the connection. I therefore assumed you had to do the logging like I talk about in that post (otherwise the logging wouldn’t persist beyond...(read more)

  • DTLoggedExec 1.0 Stable Released!

    - by Davide Mauri
After serveral years of development I’ve finally released the first non-beta version of DTLoggedExec! I’m now very confident that the product is stable and solid and has all the feature that are important to have (at least for me). DTLoggedExec 1.0 http://dtloggedexec.codeplex.com/releases/view/44689 Here’s the release notes: FIRST NON-BETA RELEASE! :) Code cleaned up Added SetPackageInfo method to ILogProvider interface to make easier future improvements Deprecated the arguments 'ProfileDataFlow', 'ProfilePath', 'ProfileFileName' Added the new argument 'ProfileDataFlowFileName' that replaces the old 'ProfileDataFlow', 'ProfilePath', 'ProfileFileName' arguments Updated database scripts to support new reports Split releases in three different packages for easier maintenance and updates: DTLoggedExec Executable, Samples & Reports Fixed Issue #25738 (http://dtloggedexec.codeplex.com/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=25738) Fixed Issue #26479 (http://dtloggedexec.codeplex.com/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=26479) To make things easier to maintain I’ve divided the original package in three different releases. One is the DTLoggedExec executable; samples and reports are now available in separate packages so that I can update them more frequently without having to touch the engine. Source code of everything is available through Source Code Control: http://dtloggedexec.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list/changesets As usual, comments and feebacks are more than welcome! (Just use Codeplex, please, so it will be easier for me to keep track of requests and issues) Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • ASP.Net validation controls

    - by nikolaosk
In this post I would like to continue talking about validation in ASP.Net applications. I will look into the validation controls that ASP.Net provides. You can have a look at the first post in my blog regarding validation. You will show you that we can perform all our main validation tasks without almost writing any code. We will add validation to our form by adding one or more controls. We can also display messages to the user. The controls I am going to look into are: CompareValidator CustomValidator...(read more)

  • Using the Items collection for state management

    - by nikolaosk
I have explained some of the state mechanisms that we have in our disposal for preserving state in ASP.Net applications in various posts in this blog. You can have a look at this post , this post , this post and this one .My last post was on Application state management and you can read it here . In this post I will show you how to preserve state using the Items collection. Many developers do not know that we have this option as well for state management. With Items state we can pass data between...(read more)

  • How to create selectable themes in your ASP.Net applications

    - by nikolaosk
In this post I am going to show you something that we see in most websites. When we visit a website we are given the choice through a control to select the theme(colors, font size, font family) that we want to be applied to the site. In almost all asp.net web sites we define the look and feel of the site through Themes , skins , Master Pages and Stylesheets . I assume that you know a little bit about CSS,XHTML. I assume that you have little knowledge of web forms and master pages. Before you go on...(read more)

  • Enabling super single user mode with SQL Server

    - by simonsabin
I recently got an email from a fellow MVP about single user mode. It made me think about some features I had just been looking at and so I started playing. The annoyance about single user mode for SQL Server is that its not really single user, but more like single connection mode. So how can you get round it, well there is extension to the -m startup option that allows you to specify an application name, and only connections with that application name can connect. This is very useful if you have...(read more)

  • Calling MSSQL stored procedure from Zend Controller ? Any other approaches?

    - by Bhavin Rana
    MSSQL and DB, Zend as PHP Framework, I am using this way to call SP with I/P Parameters and to get O/p Parameters. It seems I am writing SQL code in PHP. Any other good approaches? $str1 = "DECLARE @Msgvar varchar(100); DECLARE @last_id int; exec DispatchProduct_m_Ins $DispatchChallanId,'$FRUNo',$QTY,$Rate,$Amount, ".$this->cmpId.",".$this->aspId.",".$this->usrId.",@Msg = @Msgvar OUTPUT,@LAST_ID = @last_id OUTPUT; SELECT @Msgvar AS N'@Msg',@last_id AS '@LAST_ID'; ";//Calling SP $stmt = $db->prepare($str1); $stmt->execute(); $rsDispProd = $stmt->fetchAll(); $DispatchProductId = $rsDispProd[0]["@LAST_ID"];//get last ins ID as O/p Parameter

  • The Exceptional EXCEPT clause

    - by steveh99999
Ok, I exaggerate, but it can be useful… I came across some ‘poorly-written’ stored procedures on a SQL server recently, that were using sp_xml_preparedocument. Unfortunately these procs were  not properly removing the memory allocated to XML structures – ie they were not subsequently calling sp_xml_removedocument… I needed a quick way of identifying on the server how many stored procedures this affected.. Here’s what I used.. EXEC sp_msforeachdb 'USE ? SELECT DB_NAME(),OBJECT_NAME(s1.id) FROM syscomments s1 WHERE [text] LIKE ''%sp_xml_preparedocument%'' EXCEPT SELECT DB_NAME(),OBJECT_NAME(s2.id) FROM syscomments s2 WHERE [text] LIKE ''%sp_xml_removedocument%'' ‘ There’s three nice features about the code above… 1. It uses sp_msforeachdb. There’s a nice blog on this statement here 2. It uses the EXCEPT clause.  So in the above query I get all the procedures which include the sp_xml_preparedocument string, but by using the EXCEPT clause I remove all the procedures which contain sp_xml_removedocument.  Read more about EXCEPT here 3. It can be used to quickly identify incorrect usage of sp_xml_preparedocument. Read more about this here The above query isn’t perfect – I’m not properly parsing the SQL text to ignore comments for example - but for the quick analysis I needed to perform, it was just the job…

  • What is the suggested approach to Syncing/Backing up/Restoring from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 20

    - by Eoin Campbell
I only have SQL Server 2008 (Dev Edition) on my development machine I only have SQL Server 2005 available with my hosting company (and I don't have direct connection access to this database) I'm just wondering what the best approach is for: Getting the initlal DB Structure & Data into production. And keeping any structural changes/data changes in sync in future. As far as I can see... Replication - not an option cos I can't connect to the production DB. Restoring a backup - not an option because as far as I can see, you cannot export a DB from 2008 that is restorable in 2005 (even with the 2008 DB set in 2005 compatibility mode) and it wouldn't make sense to be restoring production over the top of my dev version anyway. Dump all the scripts from my 2008 Database, Revert my Dev to machine from 2008 - 2005, and recreate the database from the scripts, then just use backup & restore to get the initial DB into production, then run scripts through the web panel from that point onwards Dump all the scripts from my 2008 Database and generate the entire 2005 db from scripts in production. then run scripts through the web panel from that point onwards With the last 2 options, I'd probably need to script all the data inserts as well using some tool (which I presume exists on the web) Are there any other possibile solutions that I'm not considering.

  • FluentNHibernate SQL Server 2005/2008 Setup Tutorial

    - by Abe
Hello! Does anybody know of any good tutorials that show how to configure FluentNhibernate for SQL Server 2005/2008. The ones I have found usually just use SQLite, but I would like to see one that specifically targets SQL Server 2005/2008. I really liked the sample tutorial on the FluentNhibernate website (http://wiki.fluentnhibernate.org/Getting_started#Your_first_project), but it looks like most tutorials I have found seem to only deal with SQLite. It would be great to see a working tutorial that deals with the more common databases in real world applications like SQL Server 2005/2008, MySQL, etc Thanks!

  • Attach and upgrade TFS 2005 databases to a TFS 2008 installation

    - by henriksen
I have a Windows server 2008 with SQL 2008 and TFS 2008 installed. And I have another box with SQL 2005 and TFS 2005 installed. Does anyone know of a way I can just transfer the databases (or data in another way) from TFS 2005 to TFS 2008. Any data on the 2008 box can be deleted. The machines are not in a domain so all accounts are local. So I'll have to fix that afterwards, but that's managable. Basically, can I attach the databases and run an upgrade command?

  • Upgrading TFS 2005 to TFS 2010 fails at "Executing servicing step Upgrade Version Control Identities"

    - by nadeemmar
Hi all, I have been trying to upgrade our TFS 2005 to TFS 2010 but with no luck so far. I went through the TFS Installation guide and many upgrade guides but with no luck in overcoming the issue I am facing which seems to be unique and different to other described issues. In our company, we have a domain forest with several domains. Lets say domain A, B, and C. TFS is in domain A and has users from all these three domains. All domains have trust reltionships between them. However, domain C was deleted several months ago. In the upgrade process, whenever I reach the collection upgrade step, the following error is raised: [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z][Informational] Step Data: ExtensionType = Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Server.PlugIns.WorkspaceSecurityNamespaceExtension [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z] Servicing step Create VersionControl Security Namespaces passed. (ServicingOperation: UpgradePreTfs2010Databases; Step group: Upgrade.TfsVersionControl) [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z] Executing servicing step Upgrade Version Control Identities. (ServicingOperation: UpgradePreTfs2010Databases; Step group: Upgrade.TfsVersionControl) [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z][Informational] Step Performer: VersionControl [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z][Informational] Step Type: UpgradeIdentity [Info @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:47Z][Informational] Step Data Text: [Error @09:57:50.997] [2010-12-29 09:55:51Z][Error] Sync error for identity: System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity, S-1-5-21-1004336348-527237240-682003330-2818 - The trust relationship between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed I looked for the SID and it seems to be for a user in the deleted domain C. With a bit of googling, I figured out that TFSConfig Identities command can be used to remap users from one domain to the other. I went ahead and created local users that matches the users we have from domain C and ran the TFSConfig Identities /Change command and it executed successfully. However, I still get the same error. I am stuck and can't figure out how to move forward :( I need your expertise, has anyone faced this issue before? Do I need to change these identities on TFS 2005 before I commence the upgrade? I forgot to mention, I am following the upgrade with a move approach. I created a virtual machine for testing the upgrade. Installed SQL server 2008, restored the TFS databases and installed TFS 2010 and ran the upgrade wizard. Regards, Nadeem

  • What ports does Management Studio use to connect to SQL Server (2005)

    - by Martin
I have SQL Server 2005 operating on a remotely hosted server and wish to access it from my own machine using management studio The firewall on the remote server is allready setup to allow all traffic from my external IP - and that works great. However I have a load balancing router that has a second line attached to it - unfortunatly the second line has a dynamic external IP. I need to therefore set up a rule in the router to always send data from Management studio on the first line - but I need to know the port numbers. Can you advise?
