  • USB Drive cannot detect in Windows 7

    Have you ever plugged in a USB drive or any external device with a hard drive and wondered why you cannot see it in My Computer? I often have, I believe my USB is not broke .. because if I plugin the USB to another computer could be seen / detected. I tried following this tutorial http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/22251/find-your-missing-usb-drive-in-windows-7-vista/ but I am afraid of going wrong, and caused my data is lost. is there any easy way around this problem? many thank's for your attentions Guys ..

  • Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

    On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation bay be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation?

  • OEM Windows 8 Downgrade to Windows 7

    I recently Purchased an ASUS K55A As you may know, all Windows 8 machines come with a BIOS that contains 'Secure Boot'. This basically makes sure that the BIOS won't load anything other than the Windows 8 OEM bloatware version that comes with new Laptops. However the Asus Bios allows for me to disable the secure boot, and therefore I should be able to revert to Windows 7, Linux, etc. Drivers may or may not be supported. When I put my MINT LINUX boot disc in CD-R Drive and try to boot from ISO, nothing happens. There isn't even a boot priority list in this BIOS... I can provide screen shots later. It just says WINDOWS 8 Bootloader and also on the other tab it says WINDOWS 8 BOOT OVERRIDE Has anybody purchased a windows 8 machine and successfully loaded windows 7 or Linux?

  • unable to transfer files from handy cam to PC

    I am using a Windows 7 PC,I am using sony dcr -sr88 handy cam . I need to transfer all my videos from handycam to my PC. when i try to connect to the PC through USB. it detects the usb drive in the Handycam on my PC and shows the used memory. But when i open the folder it shows "folder is empty". How i can copy the files? I have tried following: Changed the USB cable CHanged the USB port I can play the videos through handicam, but those files not visible in PC when connected in USB mode. Please help ..bit urgent!

  • What are the major distinctions between PureDarwin and FreeBSD?

    I'm looking to install a different unix on my workstation to acquire some perspective on GNU/Linux and out of curiosity. I have narrowed my options down to these two. The reason for considering PureDarwin is because I have very little experience with Apple's products. So my question is will installing and using PureDarwin give me a closer understanding of OSX than would running FreeBSD? What I have in mind are day to day routines like adding users, installing software and configuring various aspects of the underlying OS. I know that the GUI of OSX would not be available, but that is not a concern. As a secondary, less important question, can I buy OS X in the apple store and run it in a virtual machine or does that violate their EULA?

  • HELP! Snow Leopard's Desktop Icons keeps Resizing Repeatedly

    I'm using a new macbook 10.6.5. I've been using mac OS for years. However, the problem that I'm getting is that the desktop icons keep resizing repeatedly. It keeps going to the biggest size possible and its driving me crazy. I've been resizing it back to medium size all the time. But when I start doing something at the finder it starts resizing by itself once again. Is there a fix to this problem? Please help.

  • How does /burnmemory=XXX boot.ini switch work?

    I know what the /burnmemory switch does on Windows, but I'd like to understand what Windows is doing under the hood to support it. It's described on msdn as the "amount of memory, in megabytes, that Windows cannot use". Does this mean simply that the kernel does not allow user virtual memory mapping into this area? How is this accomplished in the kernel, and are there other restrictions that the kernel will make when burnmemory is set?

    Has anybody had any experience using XXClone as a tool for cloning an existing installation of Windows in order to move it from an old PATA drive to a new, larger SATA without having to reinstall everything? Did you have any problems? Or can you recommend an alternative (free) software tool that you know - preferably from repeated experience - is reliable?   • Decreasing cached memory and increasing Free memory in RAM

    Hi, Im using windows 2007 server 64 bit OS, I've uploaded the snap shot of my task manager when minimum processes running It shows Total memory 8190 mb *Cached memory 4315 mb* Free 3402 mb So effectively I get only 3402 mb of total RAM usage My question here is more than half is used for cached memory is there any means I can decrease this cached memory inturn I can increase my free memory. I need to do this because my Application requires at least 5GB RAM and it crashed when run in this system. Please give me a solution for this Thanks in advance

  • Difference between "bit-number" in filesystem and that in OS (like 32,64 bit)?

    I encountered 2 terms ,"FAT32", a file system and "Windows Vista 32 bit". I found that the meaning of a 32 bit OS is that that the OS deals with data in chunks of minimum size 32 bits. I don't quite understand the depth of that, but I figure ,every file in that system with that OS should have a minimum size of 32 bits. I also read that these 32 bits are used to hold data of files' location(reference) and details. Which of it is it? I have also read that 4 GB of RAM is all that is needed at the most if you're on a 32 bit OS. But I don't understand why. If there are 32 bits to hold info about files and their locations,there can be 2^32 possible combinations of it. But I have found in many places,2^32 is divided by 1024 thrice to get 4GB. Why? Did that 2^32 become equal to 2^32 bytes? And about filesystems I read a similar explanation for what 32 means in FAT32. It is supposed to mean that 32 bits are used to number file system block. Now how is different from the number before the OS?

  • Installing multiple versions of a shared library

    I am running ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use tmux 1.6. tmux has a dependency on libevent 2. My solution was to compile libevent2 and drop into /usr/local/lib then compile tmux against this lib and drop into /usr/local/bin. This works great until...I restart. This is just an assumption on my part but it seems that other binaries are now linking to the libevent2 library presumably because its on the library path. Because there are 60+ packages with libevent1 dependencies this causes my install to basically lose its mind. Is there an idiomatic way to approach running an application that has a core library dependency on a different version? Should I just statically link the lib?

  • Is there a difference in page fault rates between CPU bound and I/O bound processes?

    I was thinking, should there be any difference in expectation of the page fault rate on CPU-bound vs I/O bound processes? At first I thought maybe we could, since CPU-bound processes would likely be using more memory accesses per time quantum, so I expect it would move from locality to locality faster. At the same time, the CPU-bound process is probably given a larger working set... but this doesn't affect the fault overhead as it hits a new locality IF this wasn't pre-paged in. Is there actually any real difference in the page fault rates or am I just musing about something nonexistent? And if there is, how would it impact a real-world OS like linux?

What I did was, I took out the hard drive, put it in an enclosure and plugged it in to my other laptop that runs linux. The problem is, I cannot copy files from the hard drive due to file permissions. I tried to access the hard drive as root. But I still cannot copy files.     is there any way to know that form which path an application was installed. for example I have firefox.exe in D:\Downloads\App\firefox.exe and when I install it, it is installed in C:\Program Files\Firefox but for some reason I need path from where Firefox was installed. that is "D:\Downloads\App\". like if this path is stored in some registry value? or in some other system variables? is there any way to get that path? I would like to get that path and then store it in some text file

  • Turn 2 USB type A ports (receptacles) into an extension cable with 2 type A receptacles using Linux?

    I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord.     I installed windows 8's developer preview version dual boot with win 7 ultimate. I put my win 8's partition to 11 GB (almost), but now when I try to uninstall the win 8 it dont allow me to uninstall it saying no enough space. What to do ?? Then I try to login to win 7 and increase the size of the partition of win 8. This also is not possible. Please help me with it. I want to uninstall it but how and what to do?
