• How to easily use Windows 7 search advanced options?

  Is there an alternative to trying to remember all the advanced search options? Like an actual GUI as we had for windows XP? As powerful as Windows Search apparently is, I cannot possibly remember all the options available. How is a mere mortal like my Dad supposed to understand and retain all this? I get the shakes every time i need to find something on Win 7. Anyone have some relief? Part 2: Why does it RE-run a search if i add a column and try to sort on that?

• Can I disable Pam Loginuid? Can I find out options used to configure kernel?

  I am getting a lot of the following types of error in my secure log on a CentOS 5.4 server: crond[10445]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid sshd[10473]: pam_loginuid(sshd:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid I've seen discussion of this being caused when using a non-standard kernel without the correct CONFIG_AUDIT and CONFIG_AUDITSYSCALL options set. Where this is the case, it is advised to comment out some lines in the pam.d config files. I am running a Virtual Private Server where I need to use the kernel provided by the supplier. Is there a way to find out what options they used to configure the kernel? I want to verify if the above is the cause. If this turns out not to be the cause, what are the risk of disabling pam_loginuid for crond and sshd?

• Using Internet Explorer 8 and 9 beta under internet options -advanced java does not show to check the box

  I am using internet 8 and under internet options advanced there is not box to check to enable java. I was told to reset which did nto work. I have tried to uninstall java 6-21 32 bit but I get windows installer error 1723. I brought up the java console and made sure it was pointing to the right target. But I guess the main thing is I have no enable java under internet options, advanced. It was under security to enable java scripting. Any answers?

• Where to set java heap options (e.g. -Xmx) for Tomcat 6 under Ubuntu 9.04?

  I'm running Tomcat using the tomcat6 package from Ubuntu 9.04, which makes a daemon out of Tomcat using jsvc. I'd like to know the proper way to set Java heap options like -Xmx for Tomcat. I'd like to put the configuration wherever is most stylistically correct, and wherever is least likely to be overwritten by Ubuntu package updates. The options I see right now: Hard-code them somewhere in /etc/init.d/tomcat6. Hard-code them somewhere in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh. Create a line in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/startup.sh to set CATALINA_OPTS to have the desired flags, and then export CATALINA_OPTS as an environment variable. (This looks like it will get picked up by catalina.sh.) The last option sounds like the best one, and it's advocated (without explanation of why) at http://serverfault.com/questions/121038/increasing-javas-heapspace-in-tomcat-startup-script. But I wanted to get a second opinion. Anyone want to confirm that there isn't a better way?

  Cannot help expressing my curiosity about this issue. First of all, Russia, a country, I live in, as far as I understand, is a virgin land on this matter. Motivation is purely developed here and options are not existed at all. So, I am absolutely not aware about this. I roughly understand the mechanism of options. And, as far as I understand, the major white spot in the whole that story, how much will a singe share cost. How much will I get from all those N x 1000 options? I see two ways one can get money from the business: 1. Business goes IPO !!! 2. Business is sold as a whole to another owner. Next way is rather questionable about getting money: 3. Business goes without IPO "forever" (a generation would rather die before it IPO). I am also interested some explanations about situation ?3. Situation ?1 is clear - market decides everything, you either wait for stock price you satisfied or sell everything now. But topic is rather about ?2 - business is sold to another business. I am considering the following model: I am well payed specialist with company X. Somebody, with a company Y makes me an offer. Y is a startup. They cannot offer me much money and cannot overbid my salary, but they grow fast and hope to be bought soon. Instead of money, they offer me N x 1000 options. My problem is "how to assess this offer against my current, stable and well-payed job"? Are there any average cost of virtual share during selling one company to another? Are there any average stock price companies prefer to go to IPO? Are there any barriers against spreading the value of sock before selling the company or IPO (hiring too much people with options package too fast will decrease each package value, I mean)? Are there any good articles with explanations? Is all that somehow written in the law?

• How to make the value of one select box drive the options of a second select box

  I want to make an HTML form with 2 select boxes. The selected option in the first select box should drive the options in the second select box. I would like to solve this dynamically on the client (using javascript or jQuery) rather than having to submit data to the server. For example, let's say I have the following Menu Categories and Menu Items: Sandwiches Turkey Ham Bacon Sides Mac 'n Cheese Mashed Potatoes Drinks Coca Cola Sprite Sweetwater 420 I would have two select boxes, named Menu Category and Items, respectively. When the user selects Sandwiches in the Menu Category box, the options in the Items box will only show Sandwich options. I'm stuck as how I might approach this. Once I filter out the 2nd list one time, how do I "find" the list options once I change my menu category in the 1st list? Also, if I'm thinking in SQL, I would have a key in the 1st box that would be used to link to the data in the 2nd box. However, I can't see where I have room for a "key" element in the 2nd box. How could this problem be solved with a combination of jQuery or plain javascript?

• JQuery plugin: catch events for clicking/tabbing into and out of an input box

  I'm creating a Javascript JQuery Timepicker control plugin (which I hope to open source soon) and I would like some advice on how to best register the events in the cleanest way. The control will attach to an <input> box and provide a graphical way to enter times of day ( 14:25, 2:45 AM, etc...). It does this by adding a <div> after the input box. What I want is to bind an openControl() function that fires when the input is clicked or tabbed to, and a closeControl() function that fires when the input box is tabbed away from or deselected but not if the control itself is clicked. That is, I don't want to close the control if you're clicking inside of the control's <input> or the <div>. So, after reading Joel Spolsky's response to a question on this site (which I can't find now!), I took it back to basics and read Charles Petzold's 'Code' and am about to move onto Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language. I want to learn this in a UNIX environment but only have access to a Windows system. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running on a virtualised machine via VMWare Player, and done some coding in the terminal. Is using a Linux distro the only option for programming in a UNIX environment on Windows? And what are the next steps to start programming in C in UNIX and where do I get a compiler from?

• What are the possible options for AI path-finding etc when the world is "partitionned"?

  If you anticipate a large persistent game world, and you don't want to end up with some game server crashing due to overload, then you have to design from the ground up a game world that is partitioned in chunks. This is in particular true if you want to run your game servers in the cloud, where each individual VM is relatively week, and memory and CPU are at a premium. I think the biggest challenge here is that the player receives all the parts around the location of the avatar, but mobs/monsters are normally located in the server itself, and can only directly access the data about the part of the world that the server own. So how can we make the AI behave realistically in that context? It can send queries to the other servers that own the neighboring parts, but that sounds rather network intensive and latency prone. It would probably be more performant for each mob AI to be spread over the neighboring parts, and proactively send the relevant info to the part that contains the actual mob atm. That would also reduce the stress in a mob crossing a border between two parts, and therefore "switching server". Have you heard of any AI design that solves those issues? Some kind of distributed AI brain? Maybe some kind of "agent" community working together through message passing?

Ideally, for the project I'm working on, I'm after a bit of middle ground such that I can handle the cart on-site, and only pass over to a payment gateway (with an order amount, billing & delivery details, and order ref) for them to handle the card details, before passing back. I'm sure that I've used e-commerce sites using this pattern before, but I cannot find any payment providers out there that offer this sort of option, so are there any? The only over requirement we have at present is that it must accept orders in Sterling.

  I have Ubuntu 13.10 and Windows 7 installed in dual boot on a single SSD. In addition they share an NTFS partition where I put all my data and documents. What is the optimal way to mount this NTFS partition in /etc/fstab (considering performance and minimizing wear of the SSD)? Similar questions have been asked, but I could not find answers to this particular scenario. As I understand it, the mount option 'discard' is not supported for NTFS and so should not be used (although it is recommended here). Another often quoted mount option is 'noatime'. I use it for my ext4 partitions. Does it apply to NTFS? My current /etc/fstab line is: UUID=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX /dos ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

• Ubuntu 12.04 Install Problems.. Installation Type screen. No options [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Only ‘sdb’ shows up when installing 12.04 on a new Dell inspiron 14z I am new to Linux and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a new HP Pavilion DV6TQE Ivy Bridge and being presented with the below screen which I believe is incorrect. My disk is set up as a basic disk (not dynamic) and I tried with a single C:\ partition and by creating a second partition in windows with no luck. Any ideas? UPDATE: I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it yet.. My hard drive has a 32gb mSSD cache which is listed as dev/sdb. for some reason this is causing the installation trouble.

• Do I need to create my own or use a commercial server for the features and matchmaking options I want my game to support?

  So I'm developing an indie turn-based game for iOS and, in coding up a Game Center matchmaking class, I'm starting to question whether Game Center is even the best choice for what I want this game to do. I need to figure out whether I need to create my own server, invest in a preexisting client or server service, or if I even need to use a server at all. If I do need to use a ready-made service other than Game Center, which server would accomodate my game's needs best? I have limited resources and funds. Here is the list of features I want my game to support, ideally: Turn-based gameplay (a la "with Friends" and "with Buddies" games) Smart matchmaking (matching users up with other players of comparable skill/achievements) Random matchmaking Facebook matchmaking Specific username matchmaking Contact list matchmaking A way to select what "type" of match you want to challenge an opponent to. (In random, smart, and Facebook matchmaking, there will be different "wagers" the player can make. [e.g. "I wanna play a random opponent for 1000 points. Now, I wanna play my Facebook buddy for 1,000,000 points."] There will be a predetermined range of amounts you can play for. It won't be customizable.) Buddies list capability (Game-buddies, as opposed to contacts and Facebook) A higher concurrent game cap than Game Center offers (which I still can't really find a straight answer on) Scalability (it should support 2 or 20,000,000 players) Objective-C compatibility Flexibility (for all the stuff I haven't thought of yet) Am I dreaming, here? Is there even a service that can handle all of these features? Do I need to invest months in learning a networking language to build my own? If so, how much would I need to spend on hardware? I've been looking around all morning and, so far, the only seemingly viable option is SmartFox. Under "Everything and the kitchen sink" section here, it says they support "virtual world with Zones, Rooms and RoomGroups, create complex game challenges, send invitations, manage buddy lists, create custom permission profiles, oversee the security aspects and tons more." http://www.smartfoxserver.com/overview/platform Is there an option that Im just overlooking? • Is there a way to manage my Grub menu options from with the GUI/desktop?

  With each kernel update, a new entry is placed in Grub to provide a way to boot that specific kernel version. I have about 5 at the moment and, to be honest, once I have confirmed I can boot into the new kernel version, I never go back to a previous version. • Leaving the field of programming. What are the options?

  A lot of graduates ask about getting into this field, but I know there are times when I (as well as many others) think about leaving, too. My issue is that I love solving problems and the act of creating something that people enjoy using, and that is what keeps bringing me back. Lately, though, programming has become less of the act of creation and about solving problems, and has become more about being "a monkey at a keyboard". Can you offer any advice with regard to: What fields would offer equivalent problem-solving challenges consistently? How you would go about doing the research, or considering the career change? Basically anything else you think would be helpful in this situation. EDIT: I guess I should clarify and say that I've been in the field about 10 years, and I have had my fair share of working environments. The place where I am at now, and even the previous two jobs, the people I worked with have been great. I've been very lucky in that respect. I'm beginning to wonder if the next step for me has little to do with actual programming and more to do with business analysis or strategic consulting. I would hate to get too much onto the business side of things though, as I like being around tech folks more.

Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

• Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. Data Mapper My favourite pattern for data access is Data Mapper, because it completely separates the data objects themselves from the communication with the data store: class TopMapper { public Top FetchById(int id) { var top = new Top(DataStore.TopDataById(id)); top.Children = MiddleMapper.FetchForTop(Top); return Top; } } class MiddleMapper { public Middle FetchById(int id) { var middle = new Middle(DataStore.MiddleDataById(id)); middle.Parent = TopMapper.FetchForMiddle(middle); middle.Children = BottomMapper.FetchForMiddle(bottom); return middle; } } This way I can have one mapper per data store, and build the object from the mapper I want, and then save it back using the mapper I want. There is a circular reference here, but I guess that's not a problem because most languages can just store memory references to the objects, so there won't actually be infinite data. The problem with this is that every time I want to construct a new Top, Middle or Bottom, it needs to build the entire object tree within that object's Parent or Children property, with all the data store requests and memory usage that that entails. And in real life my tree is much bigger than the one represented here, so that's a problem. Requests in the object In this the objects request their Parents and Children themselves: class Middle { private List<Bottom> _children = null; // cache public List<Bottom> Children { get { _children = _children ?? BottomMapper.FetchForMiddle(this); return _children; } set { BottomMapper.UpdateForMiddle(this, value); _children = value; } } } I think this is an example of the repository pattern. Is that correct? This solution seems neat - the data only gets requested from the data store when you need it, and thereafter it's stored in the object if you want to request it again, avoiding a further request. However, I have two different data sources. There's a database, but there's also a web service, and I need to be able to create an object from the web service and save it back to the database and then request it again from the database and update the web service. This also makes me uneasy because the data objects themselves are no longer ignorant of the data source. We've introduced a new dependency, not to mention a circular dependency, making it harder to test. And the objects now mask their communication with the database. Other solutions Are there any other solutions which could take care of the multiple stores problem but also mean that I don't need to build / request all the data every time?

• What options are there for splitting UI layout from code logic using a markup language?

  What tools similar to GWT's UIBinder exist in other languages? By this I mean a system where you can define your UI layout in a markup language (preferably html+css) and attach the functionality to the layout using the code. I'm most interested in anything for python, but answers in other languages would interest me as well. I'm interested because the benefits of having a non-programmer work directly on the layout without needing to touch the code and adjust a bunch of UI toolkit method calls is very productive. I'm aware of Flex for flash, but is there anything else out there? What search terms might I use to find such frameworks? I've looked around but I haven't found anything concrete.
