'rlwrap' has other functions and here's my kludgy alias to force sqlplus to use the full real estate of yourtty.   I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

• Desktop interface crashes after software updates

  Recently, after installing Ubuntu software updates on the evening of December 7th, 2012, my desktop interface crashes regularly leaving me with a command line screen with a long string of automated commands showing (I assume what goes on behind the pretty desktop). At first, I thought it was only crashing whenever I played DirectX games in WINE, but now it crashes if I open the native Firefox browser or if it's doing nothing at all but sitting there. Apport attempts to report the bugs after restart, but often they crash as well. I've done a SMART check on the hard drive, and everything report OK. No read errors, no bad sectors. I am using an Acer Extensa 4620Z Memory: 2.0 GiB Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz x 2 GraphicsL: Intel 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2 OS: Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit Disk: 116.0 GB with 33.4 GB Available

  I need to develop the application which display the dashboard where data from various SQL DB is fetched from different servers and displayed. Now this need to happen real time we can have refresh time say 5 min. Here is my thought, suggest if anything is wrong. 1) To Develop the Windows Service to accumulate the data from various SQL Server Instance. 2) Then Persist those details into SQL DB from which Dashboard will displayed on the web page. 3) Fetch of data from Windows service will be trigger every x minutes. 4) SQL Server Instance details will be stored in SQL DB which Windows Service will be referring. • How to get notfications of ppa updates?

  How can I get notified of updates to a certain PPA? For example when I am interested in new package versions of a certain package in a certain PPA? If a user has the package in question installed and is using the default desktop, she probably get notified via an icon in the traybar or something like that. But I am searching for a method which works even when the package is not installed (and without gnome). It should be reliable and prompt. Does launchpad provides some RSS/Atom-Feed features for PPAs? Or email notifications? (As a sidenote: I am surprised that even with my own PPA I only get an upload notification via mail - but no notification when the binary package is finished.)

• Real World ADF - another new ADF book hits the stands

  I'm pleased to report that yet another Oracle ADF book hits the bookstores this month.  One of my fellow Product Managers, Jobinesh, has written Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide.   I'm currently awaiting a copy for review and can't wait to get into this book.  Jobinesh is an incredibly smart and switched-on technical ADF guru and I'm convinced I'm going to learn a whole lot of tips and techniques from this book. Once I get my hands on a copy I'll be writing up a full review. As someone who has written an Oracle ADF book already, I know the effort that goes into something like that, so well done Jobinesh.

• Game testing on Android - emulator or real devices?

  I am working at a localization agency and we have been approached by a client about testing their games on iOS as well as Android. Testing on iOS seems fairly easy as we can just buy a couple of devices and we should be covered. For Android it seems to be completely different. From what i found, the emulator can cover all API levels, screen sizes and such, but i hear it's buggy and nothing could replace testing on real devices. With the vast amount of Android devices out there and the rate at which new devices are released it seems impossible to keep up. How can i test games (localization and functional) on Android covering all compatible devices?

But with IOS i need to wait for an Apple approval taking about 10 days. I want to push updates more then weekly. What if my server code changes so the client MUST update? Run an old version of the server code just for IOS? How do other multiplayer devs handle this ?

  Is there a suitable software or a good tutorial for creating 2D rooms/scenery for adventure games from real photos? Is it possible to achieve good results by using photos, or the hand-drawn style will always be the best choice? Thank you! --- EDIT --- I want to clarify that I'm particularly interested in the art creation process, not on the environment in which to build games. I'm writing the game in Java for Android, but I don't think it matters. Also, I'm not trying to decide if the game will have photo realistic rooms or not - I want to achieve 2d pixelated, old-school style background scenes and I wonder if this can be made from photos, because I cannot draw them myself. • Boots to a totally blank screen after I installed some ATI Radeon card updates

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

• Chrome keeps crashing after updates

  I'm a chrome user and an enthusiast but few days ago I made Ubuntu get some updates using Update Manager, then I turned off my notebook and when I restarted it, I tried to start Chrome which after a few seconds turned the screen completely black, and some errors appeared for few seconds and then I got logged off, and had to re-login, and when I opened Chrome again the same thing happened! I've uninstalled it with Synaptic and did complete cleanings before re-installing Chrome but nothing succeeded. Now I can't use either Chromium and Chrome, but Firefox works. It's a very strange thing, never happened to me before and I don't know what to do because I had all my bookmarks syncronized in Chrome! Please help if you can :)

• After running updates in 10.10 Netbook Remix, Ralink 5390 Not working

  Additional Drivers still lists the driver. Reports it as being activated but not in use. Prior to running updates, wireless was working fine. Set it up using this guide: http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/02/how-to-install-drivers-for-ralink.html Thoughts and reflections would be much appreciated. ... nm. Using Synaptic Package Manager, marked for reinstallation, reinstalled, rebooted. Back to the way things were. Little new to this side of the world. ;)

• Ubuntu 14.04 + nvidia-331-updates makes a blank desktop screen

  I upgraded my installation from 13.10 to 14.04. The problem is that whenever I install the Nvidia drivers from the GUI, upon reboot or trying to login again it only shows the wallpaper of my desktop and nothing else. The mouse does move around, but nothing works. I am unable to open a terminal or do anything else. If I go into the tty console and purge the drivers, then things seem to work again. I have an Optimus setup, with an onboard Intel and discrete Nvidia GTX770M card. It's a 64-bit architecture. I really need to work with CUDA, and was hopeful after hearing that nvidia-prime was released, but this is a real downer. Any help on this?

• No user/password boxes on login screen after updates today (June 30, 2012)

  Just installed today's batch of updates, including new kernel 3.2.0-26 and rebooted. Now the screen just has a logo in the middle and "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" in bottom left corner, but no box to choose which user to log in as, or to enter a password. CTRL-ALT-F1 gets me to a "login:" prompt, and I can log in - but I have no idea what to look at to find out what is wrong, or to fix this. Tried older kernels and recovery mode for current kernel - no joy, still no way to log into the graphics console.

I did a number of updates to the HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser here:http://www.hackingsilverlight.net/HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser.html including things like MEF and IsolatedStorage. As to the community edition of the book, I'm still trying to get some contributors to finish. • Package version updates policy

  Not sure if here it's the right place to ask, if not - please point me to the right direction. Let's say there's a package, for the sake of real-world example - bind9. In Precise and in Quantal it's version 9.8.1. The original developer (ISC) currently provide versions 9.8.4 which is a bugfix release in the 9.8 line, and 9.9.2 which is a "new features" branch. It looks like when a security issue is encountered, the specific bugfix is backported into 9.8.1. Now the question: Why maintainers don't just update to the latest bugfix release ? Why to backport only certain patches ? Is it intentionally or just there's no maintaner who would take the effort to update to the latest bugfix release ?

• Oneiric updates cause "Window Creation Error" in Second Life client

  With the latest Oneiric updates, I've been unable to use Second Life, a virtual reality simulator, in Ubuntu. I assume it has something to do with the NVidia driver, since the error in the console says: WARNING: createWindow: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window. WARNING: LLViewerWindow: Failed to create window, to be shutting Down, be sure your graphics driver is updated I guess I could file a bug on Launchpad, but I'm not sure where to file it. Does anyone have any insight into what may be causing this problem? It was working fine a week ago, and older viewers (Imprudence viewer anyway) still work fine.

• Number of iterations to real time

  I have an animation of traffic. I have 20 cars in road network, each car have a starting node and end node. Each car know how much distance does it need to travel in order to reach the end node. I move cars each 20 ms for 10 px. To move all cars from their start node to end node I need 60 iterations. That is 60*20ms = 1200ms. Now I want to convert this time, or use data that I have, to a real time where car move 50km/h. How can I do that? Any idea?
