  I like the new Data Flow Source Assistant in SSIS Denali. The default view is shown above, with the "Show installed only" checkbox checked. When not checked, the list of Source types changes: In previous versions of SSIS, I rarely created connections in the Connection Managers pane - I usually hit a New button in either a Source or Destination Adapter, or in a task. • Structuring game world entities and their rendering objects

  I'm putting together a simple 2d tile-based game. I'm finding myself spinning circles on some design decisions, and I think I'm in danger of over-engineering. After all, the game is simple enough that I had a working prototype inside of four hours with fewer than ten classes, it just wasn't scalable or flexible enough for a polished game. My question is about how to structure flow of control between game entity objects and their rendering objects. Should each renderer have a reference to their entity or vice-versa? Or both? Should the entity be in control of calling the render() method, or be completely oblivious? I know there are several valid approaches here, but I'm kind of feeling decision paralysis. What are the pros and cons of each approach?

• Lean/Kanban *Inside* Software (i.e. WIP-Limits, Reducing Queues and Pull as Programming Techniques)

  Thinking about Kanban, I realized that the queuing-theory behind the SW-development-methodology obviously also applies to concurrent software. Now I'm looking for whether this kind of thinking is explicitly applied in some area. A simple example: We usually want to limit the number of threads to avoid cache-thrashing (WIP-Limits). In the paper about the disruptor pattern[1], one statement that I found interesting was that producer/consumers are rarely balanced so when using queues, either consumers wait (queues are empty), or producers produce more than is consumed, resulting in either a full capacity-constrained queue or an unconstrained one blowing up and eating away memory. Both, in lean-speak, is waste, and increases lead-time.   Say my company is going to build a complicated asp.net web form education system. One of the module is web based registration. To make it flexiable, we decide to use user control(ascx) with rule-engine (work flow) regulating all business logic behide them. Thus in future,for different clients, we can simply config basic existing rules or adding new rules.(Rules stored in db or XML per client). Now the question is how to deal with the user controls (ascx)? My opinion is for different client build diffrent user control from scratch. other voice is like reuse existing user controls.

• Steps to create a solution for a problem

  I am a trainee. According to my teacher, he says that to solve a problem we should go with steps to solve it like Create Algorithm (optional) Create a Datatable: By analyzing the problem, create main concepts in those problem as columns and the related issues in the main concept as rows. Create a Flowchart based on the Datatable. (when creating flow chart, think that you are in that situation and design it in your brain) By seeing the Flowchart, solve the problem. These steps should always consider by a programmer if he/she wants to become a Software designer (not programmer). Because the above approach gives an efficient way of finding solution to a problem even the problem is small. According to him, this way of approach also works in real time scenario's. My question is: Is this really an efficient way? please share also your thoughts. Keeping beside my question I just want to share some thoughts of my teacher with you who is a good mentor for me.

• Interfacing the payment systems

  Hello all. I'm a complete newbie to using online payment systems for web projects, and can't really think of where to start. Let's assume that web system in question needs to generate some income online, and the business idea/functionality is in place, while organizing cash flow is the only unsolved problem. Points of interest are how the custom developed software interfaces to payment systems, and how the resulting income is available to the owner. I do understand that there are probably hundreds of systems out there, but to be more specific on which of them suit, I'd have to know how they work, and that's where I don't feel like understanding much. • What are the basic skills a BEGINNING JavaScript programmer should have?

  In NYC, we are working on creating a collaborative community programming environment and trying to segment out software engineers into differing buckets. At present, we are trying to define: Beginners Intermediates Advanced Experts (and/or Masters) Similar to an apprenticeship, you would need to demonstrate specific skills to achieve different levels. Right now, we have identified Beginner programming skills as: Object - method, attributes, inheritance Variable - math, string, array, boolean - all are objects Basic arithmetic functions - precedence of functions String manipulation Looping - flow control Conditionals - boolean algebra This is a first attempt, and it is a challenge since we know the natural tension between programming and software engineering. How would you create such a skills-based ranking for JavaScript in this manner? For example, what would be the Beginner Javascript skills that you would need to have to advance to the Intermediate Training? And so on.

• How do I improve my ability to manipulate code quickly, not wpm?

  I have seen several questions on here about touch typing and words per minute but not about improving ones ability to manipulate text using keyboard shortcuts, bindings etc. I have tried putting a cheat sheet of keyboard shortcuts next to my monitor but I can never incorporate them in my 'flow'. I have also tried the 'just use vi and don't touch the mouse' method but that only helps me with navigating code and not editing. I would prefer to use some application (or game) to learn text manipulation. But it looks like nothing like that exists (app idea?). I'm open to other suggestions too.

• The new Google Analytics - what new useful features have you found?

  If you don't know already a new version of Google Analytics has just come out. On first initial views it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on the previous version. There's lot's linking to Google's social stats but I'm yet to see the value of that. Also it doesn't seem to make the best use of the important data, it's tending to push referral sites, keywords to the back and bring the less important data to the front. Is that a sign of things to come??? One feature I did find interesting was the visitors flow as it shows the visitors path through your site. What new features have you found useful/interesting?

• Seeking advice on system documentation

  I have a rating engine (it is basically an algorithm) which when I started had no formal documentation. We have created a functional specification/decomposition which is our business level document but now I need something more technical (a technical specification). What I am struggling to understand is what that document looks like, what format it should be in and to what level of detail we should go into. We are in the process of commenting all of the code. We also have a rough document called a Blueprint which reflects the flow of the model and is written in pseudo code. Is the combination of this blueprint and the model comments sufficient as a Technical Specification?

  So we were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acousting fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start? We haven't started anything yet (on the development side) on this regard, so I want to get other opinion if this is pursuit is worth it or moot.

• Make a flowchart to demonstrate closure behavior

  I saw below test question the other day in which the author's used a flow chart to represent the logic of loops. And I got to thinking it would be interesting to do this with some more complex logic. For example, the closure in this IIFE sort of boggles me. while (i <= qty_of_gets) { // needs an IIFE (function(i) promise = promise.then(function(){ return $.get("queries/html/" + product_id + i + ".php"); }); }(i++)); } I wonder if seeing a flowchart representation of what happens in it could be more elucidating. Could such a thing be done? Would it be helpful? Or just messy? I haven't the foggiest clue where to start, but thought maybe someone would like to take a stab. Probably all the ajax could go and it could just be a simple return within the IIFE.

• SSIS 2008 Configuration Settings Handling Logic for Variables Visualized

  There are many articles discussing the specifics of how the configuration settings are applied including the differences between SSIS 2005 and 2008 version implementations, however this topic keeps resurfacing on MSDN’s SSIS Forum. I thought it could be useful to cover the logic aspect visually. Below is a diagram explaining the basic flow of a variable setting for a case when no parent package is involved.   As you can see the run time stage ignores any command line flags for variables already set in the config file, I realize this is not stressed enough in many publications. Besides, another interesting fact is that the command line dtexec tool is case sensitive for the portion following the package keyword, I mean if you specify your flag to set a new value for a variable like dtexec /f Package.dtsx -set \package.variables[varPkgMyDate].value;02/01/2011 (notice the lover case v in .value) You will get errors. By capitalizing the keyword the package runs successfully.

  (I'm not sure if it's a appropriate question here) Shell script, like bash, can do many things. It can call Unix programs, pipe their output, redirect I/O from/to files, control flow, check whether a file exists, etc. But a modern programming language, e.g, python and ruby, can also do these all. And their are (I think) more readable and maintainable. bash is worldwide spreaded. But many distributions have installed python interpreter, too. So what's the advantage of shell script? If I could write python, ruby or perl, is it worth to learn bash?

• How to understand Linux kernel source code for a beginner?

  I am a student interested in working on Memory Management, particularly the page replacement component of the linux kernel. What are the different guides that can help me to begin understanding the kernel source? I have tried to read the book Understanding the Linux Virutal Memory Manager by Mel Gorman and Understanding the Linux Kernel by Cesati and Bovet, but they do not explain the flow of control through the code. They only end up explaining various data structures used and the work various functions perform. This makes the code more confusing. My project deals with tweaking the page replacement algorithm in a mainstream kernel and analyse its performance for a set of workloads. Is there a flavor of the linux kernel that would be easier to understand(if not the linux-2.6.xx kernel)?

• New windows from the dock in Gnome Shell

  I am using Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 11.10, and I frequently use workspaces, as the shell encourages to do. My only complaint is that it is slow to place different windows of the same program in different workspaces. What I would like to do: click on an empty workspace, click on the Nautilus icon in the dock and browse to the correct folder. Then click on another empty workspace, click on the Nautilus icon and so on. This does not work: the second time I open Nautilus, the dock lets me switch to the previous instance, which is almost never what I want. So I have to click on the Nautilus icon, open a new window, place it on a different desktop, switch to that folder and finally browse to the correct folder. Is there a way to simplify this flow? It would be even better if I was able to link a specific folder from the dock, or better yet to have something similar to a Unity lens, where I can choose between the most used folders.

For those that can't, JQuery (on document load) has become very popular.* As a result of its ease, many developers are quick to use JQuery or Javascript for layout and style — even without understanding whether or not the problem can be solved with CSS alone. Should someone who sees this in practice attempt to persuade those developers otherwise? If so, what are the best responses to arguments in favor of JQuery saying it's "so easy"? * Example: Layouts that wish to use vertical layout flow of some kind often run into dead ends with CSS alone — this would include layouts similar to Pinterest, though I'm not sure that's actually impossible with CSS.

• How can I prototype my app better?

  A few weeks ago I saw a story about a master app designer showing how he worked with good old pen and paper to do effective prototyping before writing code. I'm unable to dig up that story (and I think it was a video) but if you could recommend any other useful resources I'd appreciate them. I know roughly what I want to build, but want a useful framework for thinking about how the screens should flow together. The app I want to build is for the iOS platform, but I think the video might have been about creating a web app. Thanks!

• Best tool to understand source

  I have a source code for a project. I am working on porting it to another device as the current source code is for a linux environment. I am having some error on the newly ported code. So i was thinking it would be best to once again understand the whole source code and this will help me localise the errors. Now the problem is that i tried using 'gdb' for linux to debug the code but it does not help. So is there any tool that I can use to trace the program line by line ? By doing so i can understand the program flow. Please Help !
