• Display errors using VMWare Player and Remote Desktop on Windows XP

  I've come up against a weird display issue that I can't seem to find any "fix" for. When I first boot up my computer, everything behaves normally. If I start to use VMWare Player and/or Remote Desktop, my desktop starts having some odd video issues. The frames for some windows aren't drawn at all, if I move windows around rapidly, the area under where the window used to be isn't cleared (still shows artifacts of the content of the window), etc. In some cases, the minimize / restore / maximize buttons aren't drawn (but are click-able if you can guess where they are). I've tried the usual stuff - current drivers all around, using a single monitor, etc.. none of it seems to have any bearing. If I try to disable hardware acceleration, it tends to crash the computer. As I said earlier, it's running Windows XP, dual monitors, an NVidia en8400GS video card, asus p7p55d motherboard. Not sure what other pertinent details are needed. I would appreciate any help or suggestions!

• Can a VM perform better when only two cores instead of four cores are presented to it?

  We had a VMWare VM at work with two cores allocated to it that ran a pretty heinous process in IIS. Under load the process was maxing out the CPU usage on both cores, so we asked our system engineers to present the other two cores of the physical processor to the VM. The engineer immediately said that this would not improve performance at all, but would make the VM perform worse. That statement didn't make much sense to me, and I'm wondering how what the engineer said could be true. Are there actually cases where four cores presented to a VM would cause worse performance than two cores on the same physical hardware? Let's assume an ideal situation where there's only one VM on the host server, so nothing is being shared with other OS instances. I believe the physical server had a single quad core processor, and was most likely hosting multiple VMs. I don't really know what version of ESX was running on the host, nor do I know with certainty what the physical processor config was, but from within the VM I had access to, I saw two 3.33 GHz AMD processors. In the end, I never got to test the engineer's assertion out because (while we were trying to get the VM upgraded) we were able to optimize the process and reduce it's CPU consumption, and 2) we ended up migrating to a different VM on another ESX server which had four cores presented to it.

  We are a startup looking to migrate from Fogbugz/Kiln to a new issue tracker/code review system. We are very happy with Jira, especially the configurability, but we are undecided on a code review tool. We have been trialing Bitbucket, but it doesn't fit our workflow well. Here are the problems we have identified with BB: Comments can be hard to find: when commenting on code not visible in the diff when code that is commented on is later changed viewing the full file doesn't include comments (also doesn't show changes) Viewing comments on individual commits can be a pain We have the implementer merge the diff and close the issue, whereas pull requests are more suited to the open source model where someone with commit rights merges We would like to automate creation of the code review (either from Jira or a command line tool) No syntax highlighting Once the pull request exceeds a certain size, BB won't show the whole thing and you have to view individual commits Linking BB pull requests to Jira issues is a bit janky: we have a pull request URL field on Jira, but this doesn't work when there are changes in multiple repositories Does anyone have any good suggestion given the above? We are tight on budget, and Jira integration is a big plus. We also have multiple commits per issue, and would like to have the option of viewing individual commits in the review. It might also be worth noting that we have a separate reviewer and tester for each issue.

• OVF Tools error

  Hello all, I am trying to use OVF tools 1.0 to create an .ovf appliance split to 4gbs. When I run the following command: ovftool --chunkSize=4gb vi://:@/?ds= e:\test\test.ovf everything starts off fine. It will got for about 15-16% then I get this message: "Error: unable to get NFC ticket for target disk". I have looked online, but cannot find anything that matches this problem. I am using Windows 2k3 as the ovf creation server, and I'm in a ESX 3.5 environment. The ovf must be split into 4gb chunks (or less) so they can be put onto DVDs. Also, when it is done it deletes the files it started to create. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Looking for a light weight note program.

  This might belongs on superuser but for me it's part of programming so i will ask it here. I find I use notepad to keep chunks of data that are important but not important enough to keep in my head. The one problem with this is I end up with a lot of files on my desktop that I don't know what they are for, or I don't save the file and my computer gets rebooted for some reason. So that big ramble leads to the question. I am looking for a note taking system that is light weight and easy to manage. I would rather it not be a huge application like onenote but if that is what you are using and is is working well for you could you explain how you are doing it? Thanks Erin.

• What Software or tool to ease the building of an eye catching GUI (functional) [closed]

  I want to make a control panel that opens different files but I'm not sure what would be the right tool/Sw to make this. In the company we have about 30 files that we use almost every day. They are all related to each other. I would like to create a "Control panel" to ease the opening and searching of these files. Kind of a control panel with 30 buttons. The only duty of this control panel is to open one of the file selected by the user. I need this "Control Panel" to: Look GREAT Open very fast Could you please recomend me some tool/Sw to acomplish this. What tool or SW is specially focused to make stunning GUIs? Note: In the company We are all using MS Windos 7. Thanks for the help! EDIT: This would be a Stand alone program installed or saved in a network drive. Each person can open the porgram and it pops the GUI. Not for the web. "Looks GREAT" is definitively a subjective matter. I want something that gives me plenty options to display/modify the objetcs that compose the GUI. So i can experiment and find what looks and works the best.

• VMware Workstation 7 build 203739 - Capture Movie Mouse Pointer Not Visible

  Hi, I have noticed that whenever I create a Capture Movie, the movie is fine but the mouse pointer is not visible at all. The clicks are on buttons file menus are executed but is hard for a viewer of the capturre movie session to follow the recording smoothly. This was not a problem in previous versions of WorkStation. Is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to see the mouse pointer? Note: VM Tools are installed, Host is Vista Ultimate Edtion SP1, x64 and the guest is a Win XP SP2. For example assume that I have 4 physical ESX Hosts with dual physical CPU's and 3 separate single vCPU Virtual Machines running SQL Server 2008 running in that cluster. How many SQL Standard Processor licenses would I need? Is it 3 (one per VM) or 12 (one per VM on each physical host) or something else? How many SQL Enterprise Processor licenses would I need? Is it 3 (one per VM) or 8 (one for each physical CPU in the cluster) or, again, something else? The range in the list prices for these options goes from $17k to $200k so getting it right is quite important. Bonus question: If I choose the Server+CAL licensing model do I need to buy multiple Server instance licenses for each of the ESX hosts (so 12 copies of the SQL Server Standard server license so that there are enough licenses on each host to run all VM's) or again can I just license the VM and what difference would using Enterprise per server licensing make? Edited to Add Having spent some time reading the SQL 2008 Licensing Guide (63 Pages! Includes Maps!*) I've come across this: • Under the Server/CAL model, you may run unlimited instances of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise within the server farm, and move those instances freely, as long as those instances are not running on more servers than the number of licenses assigned to the server farm. • Under the Per Processor model, you effectively count the greatest number of physical processors that may support running instances of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise at any one time across the server farm and assign that number of Processor licenses And earlier: ..For SQL Server, these rule changes apply to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise only. By my reading this means that for my 3 VM's I only need 3 SQL 2008 Enterprise Processor Licenses or one copy of Server Enterprise + CALs for the cluster. By implication it means that I have to license all processors if I choose SQL 2008 Standard Processor licensing or that I have to buy a copy of SQL Server 2008 Standard for each ESX host if I choose to use CALs. *There is a map to demonstrate that a Server Farm cannot extend across an area broader than 3 timezones unless it's in the European Free Trade Area, I wasn't expecting that when I started reading it.

  I'm trying to setup a vSphere Client vCenter v5.0.0 Build 455964 Template Customization Specification using a Windows Sysprep unattended answer XML file for Win2008R2. However I didn't know how Sysprep worked before attempting this so it was a time-consuming nightmare (even after reviewing VMware vSphere ESXi 5's documentation)! I think I've figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, but it's still not working. The biggest problem at this point is that vSphere Client vCenter Customization Specification IP address information is not sticking when I load a Sysprep XML file with just 1 basic setting! This can only be a bug. Here is the process I'm using: PROCESS for Windows - vSphere Client Install Windows OS install VM Tools customize Windows (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment) install Applications (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment too) shutdown the VM convert the VM to a template create a custom Windows Sysprep XML answer file with desired customizations View Management Customization Specifications Manager create "New" Specification for "Target Virtual Machine OS" select Windows check "Use Custom Sysprep Answer File" (ADDS: Custom Sysprep File. KEEPS: Network (IP), Operating System Options (SID, Sysprep /generalize). • Random servers in Citrix servers suddenly bluescreens (mostly 0x0000008e and 0x0000007e)

  I'm responsible for a Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 farm. Starting Friday 30. November, my servers started to crash randomly. So far we've experienced 80 crashes, so it's obviously becoming an increasingly big problem for us. I have 12+ years experience with IT, so I know the difference between 0 and 1, but I have a hard time cracking this. We've rolled back any recent changes I can think of for different groups of servers, but all groups still seem to crash. I don't have the skills to interpret the memory dumps to find the culprit. Has anyone encountered the same or a similar problem? - might be a generic Windows issue Other than executing "analyze -v" in WinDbg, how do I work my way through the memory dumps to see what actually triggered the BSOD? Any suggested steps in getting to the bottom of this? Any help is greatly appreciated. I can also provide links to kernel memory dumps or WinDbg output if necessary. Thanks! Problem description The majority of the STOP errors we encounter are: 0x0000008e KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (50%) 0x0000007e SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (26%) 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (21%) We also see a few 0x0000000a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (3%). For both 0x0000008e and 0x0000007e bug checks, the exception code is 0xc0000005 (Access Violation). When opening dump files in WinDbg, most details are exactly the same, for all the 0x0000008e and 0x0000007e bug checks respectively: 0x0000008e Exception address: 0x808bc9e3 Trap frame: [varies] FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x8E_nt!HvpGetCellMapped+97 Probably Caused by (IMAGE_NAME): ntkrpamp.exe 0x0000007e Exception address: 0x808369b6 Exception record address: 0xf70d3be0 Context record address: 0xf70d38dc FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x7E_nt!MmPurgeSection+14 Probably Caused by: memory_corruption About 30% of the crashes happens between 17:00 and 19:00, which leads me to believe this tend to happen more often during logoffs. But then again, only ~15% occurs between 15:00 and 17:00. Summary of farm Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 R06 on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 All high priority patches, at least as of October installed Virtualized using VMWare ESX/vSphere 4.1 on HP Proliant BL460c G6 blade servers About 53 Presentation Servers in production, divided into three silos - only one of which, the largest, is affected 2 vCPU's (5 GHz reserved), 8 GB RAM (all reserved) for each Presentation Server Plenty of free disk space Very few printer drivers - automated deletion of non-approved drivers every night ~1.000 peak concurrent users, which is reached at around 10:30 (on weekdays) Number of sessions steadily decline between 15:00 and 19:00 to ~230

• Login on VMWare XP guest machine keeps locking user AD account

  Environment: Windows 2003 AD Host: Windows 7 Pro VMWare Guest: Windows XP I use a normal user but I also have AD Admin rights (via another user). I use my AD account to login on the host as well on the aforementioned guest system. They don't share their profiles, so no problems here. I had reason to change my user (AD) password. When I did this, the guest was suspended but my user was logged in. A few days after my password change I resumed the guest. I was able to work but couldn't access networked mapped drives. I logged out and tried to log in again. At this point I realized that I initially was logged in with a user from a point before I changed my password. I logged in again with the new password, but then things went bad. I was able to successfully log in to my XP guest, however once that was completed, my AD user account got locked. This now also affected my user on the host. I was able to unlock the account, but there is still this problem: I log in via my new password into the guest and then my AD account gets locked. I'm successfully logged into the guest, but I can't access network shares from the AD server. If I don't unlock my account on the AD server, I will get further problems with my AD user. I tried multiple things, none worked: removed XP guest from AD, deleted all users, even my XP AD user profile on the guest, added machine to the AD, logged in - log in successful, account locked I resumed an older state of my guest (sometimes from the last year even) but the problem still persists. I tried this with disabled networking when the old machine state is resumed and so on, but no luck. It seems to me, although only my account is locked, this is somehow connected to the guest machine itself. I really want to avoid re-installation. This guest image was my old workstation which I virtualized once I moved to W7 pro and thus is still very valueable or me. I can work locally on the guest once logged in, but I can't access any network shares which is a problem. thanks

• Ubuntu 12.4.1 failing in vm both Vbox and Vmware on new HP Envy 4t-1000

  Brand new to Linux, getting frustrated trying to get an environment up with Ubuntu. My primary goal is to learn Linux and Apache/PHP development. I need to keep my Windows OS as main on my machine for work, so i'm trying to virtualize Ubuntu 12.4.1 without luck (many attempts). I have a new HP Envy 4t-1000 with 16gb ram, and 32 gb ssd caching with 500gb spindle hard drive. Graphics card is an Intel HD 3000 with AMD Radeon 7670M. With installing Ubuntu desktop in VBox, I'm getting this result: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51939 With VMware workstation 7 (patched), I complete the install of Ubuntu, it reboots, purple desktop briefly flashes then it drops to command line. I bought a beginning Ubuntu book, and it recommends trying to manually configure graphics if this happens. So I tried doing a safe boot holding shift - I get to the first screen (GRUB) loads fine, and I choose recovery mode. After choosing the recovery mode, I get the recovery mode options, and can arrow down to what the book suggests 'Run in fail safe graphic mode.' Once I select this option, I get a black screen with a large white dialogue box, at the top it says "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Then there is an ok button way down at the bottom. When I select 'ok' I get a menu for a few options, book recommended 'reconfigure graphics.' When I try this, I get a menu of two options: 1) "Use generic (default) configuration or 2) use backup. I've tried both options several times, hitting ok just refreshes screen and nothing more. Rebooting at this point just goes back to command line as before. I don't know what to do at this point, I've spent too many hours this weekend trying in both VBox and VMware to get Ubuntu going. Isn't there like a very basic graphic display or something I can use to at least get into the desktop? I explored the GRUB some more, and tried to look at the startup and xserver logs - both are blank. No help there I guess? When I try to choose 'Edit the configuration file, then 'ok' screen just refreshes on same menu options, nothing happens. thx for any advice. I really need to focus on learning Linux, Apache and PHP, so perhaps Ubuntu just won't work on my hardware? Any other suggestions? I will need to virtualize - THANKS for any help/advice.

• VMWare Player guest does not re-aquire IP on bridged interface after host loses and re-acquires network connectivity

  I am running a Ubuntu Linux image in VMWare Player on my laptop. The host is Windows XP. There are two network adapters configured in VMWare Player - one is host-only and the other is bridged. Everything works fine as long as the host does not lose network connectivity. If the host loses connectivity (even briefly) and then re-acquires it, my bridged adapter in VMWare Player is still unable to get an IP address. The host-only adapter remains unaffected. Disconnecting/Reconnecting the bridged adapter does not help. Simply restarting the guest OS does not help. Restarting VMWare Player does not help. The only remedy is to reboot the host and then bring up VMWare Player all over again. Is there something I can try to avoid this reboot? I searched the existing questions but they seemed to talk about adapters in NAT mode, whereas I am interested in retaining Bridged mode.

• How can I have a Windows 7 VMware guest without mouse support?

  Despite having vmmouse.present = "FALSE" mouse.vusb.absDisabled = "TRUE" pref.motionUngrab = "FALSE" in my .vmx file and a customized VMware Tools installation on the guest that does not include the mouse driver, I somehow have fully integrated mouse support for my Windows 7 VM. I can smoothly mouse from the host into the guest without needing to click or Ctrl+G in and Ctrl+Alt out. I don't want this because of the issues it causes with games. How can I get the VM to have no special mouse support while still having VMware Tools installed for its other functions (network, graphics, etc.)? The mouse works as I want without VMware Tools but not otherwise — again, despite not installing the mouse driver and having all those settings trying to disable it. Device Manager shows that the generic Windows PS/2 mouse driver is being used and not the virtual mouse driver. Guest and host are both Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, x86 and x64 respectively. I'm using VMware Player 3.1.4 and the VMware Tools installed is the latest, 8.4.6.16648.
