  I work a lecturer and when I go home I find a lot of free time. The problem is that I spend most of my time in learning about web development. I don't go outside and don't meet people, I'm only in front of the screen drinking 4 cups of coffee (per day) and trying to learn many technologies related to web development. In the last, I don't learn things very well because I'm in a hurry. I know this place is for asking about programming but I want to learn from your experience regarding learning. How do you learn? • Need to setup and access web disk for a hosting account

  I am on linux(ubuntu 12.04) and have purchased a hosting space. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured. Please let me know, how to configure this? How to allow the given port access?

• How to build a good service layer in ASP.NET?

  I have looked through some questions, technologies for building a good service layer but I have some questions regarding this that I need help with. First some information of what I have for requirements. We currently have a number of web applications that talk to each other in a spiderweb looking way (all talking to each other in a confusing way via webservices and database data). We want to change this so that all applications go through a service layer where we can work more with cache and encapsulate common functionality and more. We want this layer to also have a Web API so that 3rd party clients can consume information from the service. The problem I see is that if we build the service layer with say MVC4 Web API don't we need to communicate between the application using the webAPI meaning we have to construct URLs and consume JSON/Xml. That does not sound too effective. I assume a better method would be working with entities and WCF to communicate between the application but then we might loose the Web API magic? So the question is if there is a way to consume a service layer as both a Web API (JSON/XML) and as a more backend service layer with entities. If we are forced to use 2 different service layers we might have to duplicate some functionality and other bad things. Hope the question is clear enough and please ask if you need any more information.

• Using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) for a scheduled task

  Back in Windows Server 2008 R2, when stand-alone Managed Service Accounts (sMSA) were new, they could not be used to execute scheduled tasks. In Windows Server 2012 however, there is a new type of account called the Group Managed Service Account (gMSA). This type of account is supposedly capable of launching scheduled tasks in the task scheduler on clients & member servers inside of a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain functional level. So far, I have: Established a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain Created a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) Installed the gMSA on a Windows Server 2012 member server And currently I'm having trouble with: Setting a scheduled task to use the gMSA When I attempt to use a gMSA on a scheduled task, I get the error message that says "The object cannot be found" (paraphrased) message. My question is: How do I configure a Scheduled Task to execute using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA)?

• On Developing Web Services with Global State

  I'm new to web programming. I'm more experienced and comfortable with client-side code. Recently, I've been dabbling in web programming through Python's Google App Engine. I ran into some difficulty while trying to write some simple apps for the purposes of learning, mainly involving how to maintain some kind of consistent universally-accessible state for the application. I tried to write a simple queueing management system, the kind you would expect to be used in a small clinic, or at a cafeteria. Typically, this is done with hardware. You take a number from a ticketing machine, and when your number is displayed or called you approach the counter for service. Alternatively, you could be given a small pager, which will beep or vibrate when it is your turn to receive service. The former is somewhat better in that you have an idea of how many people are still ahead of you in the queue. In this situation, the global state is the last number in queue, which needs to be updated whenever a request is made to the server. I'm not sure how to best to store and maintain this value in a GAE context. The solution I thought of was to keep the value in the Datastore, attempt to query it during a ticket request, update the value, and then re-store it with put. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to lock the resource so that other requests do not check the value while it is in the middle of being updated. I am concerned that I may end up ticket requests that have the same queue number. Also, the whole solution feels awkward to me. I was wondering if there was a more natural way to accomplish this without having to go through the Datastore. Can anyone with more experience in this domain provide some advice on how to approach the design of the above application?

• Can't uninstall windows service

  I have somehow managed to half uninstall a windows service I was developing. In no particular order It won't delete if I use sc delete servicename It gives an exception using installutil /u pathtoservice.exe "specified service does not exist as an installed service" And using the installer/uninstaller obviously doesn't work either It's no longer in the Services listing It's not shown if I use sc query And I have rebooted I don't know what else to do, but something still exists, because attempting to install fails because it already exists. Please help.

• ASP C# Web Developer default login, getting user ID session value

  I've used the built-in wizard in Visual Web Developer 2008 to create a simple login system. I'd like to get hold of the logged in user's ID, but I'm not sure how. Peeking in the ASPNETDB.MDF in the table aspnet_Users, the column appears to be called "UserId". I gave it a go: Response.Write("ID: " + Session["UserId"]); but it's coming up blank. How do I do this? (This is not for a live project, no need to point out the sillyness in using the wizard.) Thanks

Now the question is, should I create 1 single method and reuse them for both the web application and the web service api? (This seems to be the logical solution, however its very complicated; it's much easier to duplicate the method used by the web application, and keep both separate, ie one method for the web application and one method for the web service.)   Tableau is extremely flexible when it comes to visualizing and playing around with datasets, but it is extremely slow when you go into "production mode" and publish a particular view that you've created onto your server.   Hi, I know theres hundred of questions and answers out there, but cant find one to specifically answer this. I need a web editor that will let me choose a dark themed editor. I understand gvim is one, but im not totally ready to let go of my mouse. I would like something like sublime text editor for windows, but open to other suggestions. The less bloat the best. I dont need a full IDE like eclipse, but willing to compromise, as long as the themes can easily be added. I've tried bluefish, kompozer and not happy with them. Just need a basic text editor that will highlight php syntax on a dark background.

I the Java world, Play! has it out of the box, but what I'm looking for is a more exhaustive list. Other examples that I'm aware of include: Nuxeo WebEngine, provided you're using Eclipse and the right plugin, or, in the Python world, Django and Pylons (when using the "--reload" option).

But I'm not sure if this is possible or not due to security concerns. If it is considered a no no but there is a work around I would appreciate being told the work around. The type or namespace name 'BasePage' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) How do I find out which 'using' directive I am missing and whats an assembly reference?

• Problem: connecting to drupal on hostgator without pointed domain.

  I need to connect to drupal on a website that I'm programming on a hostgator account. The website that I'm working on currently receives a lot of traffic, and I would like to make sure that it is fully functional before I launch the new website. The old website was programmed with .asp which hostgator doesn't support, and the old webhost doesn't support drupal or .php which are integral to the new web design. Drupal 6 has been freshly installed on my website, but when I try to login, it redirects me to http://gator83.hostgator.com/?q=node&destination=node instead of the drupal control panel. Is it possible to work around this? Thank you in advance.

• Mobile App integrating with Web portal

  I'm planning to develop a city info site. The web pages will display contents from a constantly updating MySQL database- most probably using a CMS. I am planning to share the same database for a Mobile app related to this. In the pages there are options for using geolocation, rate and comment for the user. I think, this mobile app should work while it's offline too. So how should i deal with data for mobile? Should i use a connection between MySQL and IndexedDB? (I'm not quite sure about this part). • Windows Service Start-Up Error 1069

  Hello, I am installing a new windows service coded in C# on a server. I installed the service fine on the server, but once i manually start up the service on a server, with the same login credentials that our other services use, i get the fatal error message notification: "Could not start the %service name% on Local Computer. Error 1069: The Service did not start due to a logon failure." I looked in the event log and i got a 7038 and 7000 event id error in that order. 7038 event id message: "The %service name% service was unable to log on as %login% with the currently configured password due to the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. To ensure that the service is configured properly, use the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC)." 7000 event id message: "The %service name% service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not start due to a logon failure. " I have other services that are using the same exact login account and they work fine. Is there something simple I could be missing? Thanks

  I tried the validation example code for web api on the latest mvc 4 download and I'm getting some errors. Does anyone have an updated example of the ValidationActionFilter class.   Hi, I have hosted a website. But now my client asks to change it to http://sites.google.com. They hav registered their domain in google. I logged in the site and saw the procedures to create a website from scratch. But is there any way to directly replace the site into google sites. Like, in my site i hav included css files in a folder called stylesheets/css and access it through the link tag. And there are several folders lik that, viz images, scripts etc. 1.Now if i have to transfer it to google sites, where do i create the folders and stuff. I have the priviliges to login to the admin part of the site. 2.And also is there anyway to create database and access it in google sites? 3.Also i see that only html pages can be created. Is there a way to add php pages or other scripting languages? 4.Going forward will google sites be usefull for professional web designing. pls give ideas on whether or not google sites is a good idea to go with

  One of the main products of my company is an Oracle Forms (and Reports) based application, that "needs" to be re-written in another technology. Why? Users want a more rich interface experience, and we want, preferably, to reduce costs with an open source application server. For this (HUGE) project, we intend to use a java web application framework, keep these points in mind: We have: hundreds of tables on our database (the ORM must be as flexible as possible); some logic which is (and will still be) based on PL/SQL procedures/functions/packages; a lot of CRUDs (the application itself is of an considerable size); a demand to work with/generate documents and workflows; an intranet based user environment; We want: to offer a RIA interface experience; use (if possible) an open source app server; a rapid (as possible) development framework; a somewhat mature framework with a "wise" roadmap (and a considerable community support); a MVC approach combined with JS or GWT widgets (e.g. Vaadin or SmartGWT); Well, in the past weeks I've read a lot of posts, Q&As on stackoverflow, and much more: Wicket, JSF, Tapestry, Grails, GWT, Struts2, Play, Spring, Seam, Echo, .... the list goes on! I've even researched about Alfresco..! The obvious question: Which one to use? At this time, any insight, recommendation, shared experience, advice will be more then welcome!
