• Forward Request to Multiple Servers

  We have 2 servers. One is old server and another is the new one. Currently we about doing a migration because the old server is not capable enough to handle everyday requests. The specs are: Old server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx as Reverse Proxy Apache WSGI Python/Django New Server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx Gunicorn Python/Django Celery+Redis Our manager asked us to research if the old server can perform multiple forwarding to all incoming request, for example, set Nginx of old server to forward all request to both old and new server. The purpose is to perform unit testing to new server using old server as comparer, see if the new server is ready to take over the role. Please help, if there is an idea, or must install some engine, or what we do is impossible. Many thanks.

• Security considerations when giving access to SQL Server db for a web application

  I need to expose our SQL Server 2008 database for an access from a asp.net web application. This is a new task for me, so I would like to know what basic security requirements are there for configuring software and hardware components of web server and DB Server. Is it OK to have both Web Server (Windows Server 2008) with IIS holding ASP.NET application and SQL Server 2008 on the same machine? Should I have to install additional firewall, like Forefront TMG? Should it be on separate computer? In case a web application is hosted on an external web hosting privider server and SQL Server DB on a our internal server what are "pro's" and "con's" of such configuration?

• Web map services displaying poorly

  Web map services no longer display correctly in ArcGIS and Google Earth - no one else on network is experiencing these. Using windows 7 OS. These problem began abruptly (1 day they were working, the next they were not). Specific problems include not displaying at all; correct display on 10% of the monitor and repeating lines of coloured squiggles and text on the remaining 90%; and small, widely spaced, pixels in place of colour fill.   This is a Canonical Question about File Permissions on a Linux web server. I have a Linux web server running Apache2 that hosts several websites. Each website has its own folder in /var/www/. /var/www/contoso.com/ /var/www/contoso.net/ /var/www/fabrikam.com/ The base directory /var/www/ is owned by root:root. Apache is running as www-data:www-data. The Fabrikam website is maintained by two developers, Alice and Bob. Both Contoso websites are maintained by one developer, Eve. All websites allow users to upload images. If a website is compromised, the impact should be as limited as possible. I want to know the best way to set up permissions so that Apache can serve the content, the website is secure from attacks, and the developers can still make changes. One of the websites is structured like this: /var/www/fabrikam.com /cache /modules /styles /uploads /index.php How should the permissions be set on these directories and files? I read somewhere that you should never use 777 permissions on a website, but I don't understand what problems that could cause. During busy periods, the website automatically caches some pages and stores the results in the cache folder. All of the content submitted by website visitors is saved to the uploads folder.

  I'm looking for ways to optimize our current web server hosted in-house. I'm trying to supply as much relevant information below. Please let me know if you would require additional information in order to assist. Server is running 1 single website, which is an online pizza ordering platform built on Zend Framework (ver1). On traffic stats from the last month aprox 6.000 pageloads per day, concentrated mainly around dinnertime. Around 1500 loads/hour peaks in that period. We recently upgraded from a 2/2mbit aDSL-line to 100/100mbit fiber, and we still have performance issues at dinner time. We assumed the 2mbit was the issue. Website is pretty snappy in low-load periods. • Cant connect to home server

  Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong. I installed XAMPP - and everything looks fine. If I go to localhost everything comes right up. But when I go to my IP address, I just get a message that the browser could not connect to it. I go into my router and set up port forwarding for port 80 etc, and I even tried putting the server as a DMZ - still nothing. I turned the firewall off to see if that was interfering in some way, then uninstalled it completely for good measure, made no difference. I'm out of ideas.. oh, and yes I have a static IP address.

  Hello All, I would like some help understanding web-server directory permissions. Apache, CentOS, PHP, Mysql Example, I have multiple sites in /var/www/html They are in paths like: /var/www/html/www_domainname_com inside each site I might have a path like /lib/mysql/ like PHP connect stuff, database config, etc. What should me permissions be so that someone cannot just browse to that directory? Should I just .htaccess them? I have apache:apache as the owner of all my web directories. Can I prevent someone from crawling certain directories of my web-server? I have a robots.txt, but what is to say the crawler obeys it? So to sum up: 1. What is the best owner/permission set for my sensitive files that the web-server or php or mysql needs, but I dont want people browsing to? Can I prevent straight out crawling of portions?

  I am using wkhtmltopdf for making a pdf of a page. My code executes the shell to run a command using this wkhtmltopdf library. Everything works fine in my wamp server but when the code runs on my web-server it does not work and gives the following error: Warning: shell_exec() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/pssptech/public_html/.../cert.php on line 272 I think that the php is running on safe mode on the server that's why the shell execution is disabled. But the main problem is I am unable to find the php.ini file on my remote web-server. Can you tell me where can I find the config file so that I can disable the safe mode? Thanks in advance.

• 2 Web Servers, 2 Domains, 1 WAN IP configuration

  The Problem: I have 2 domains, 2 web servers, 1 WAN IP. This is on a home network, so I don't have any crazy router or anything with the right tools, at least I don't think I do. I have a Dlink DIR-655 router. I need to be able to forward the website to the right box. 1 server is hosting www.site1.com, and the other should be hosting, www.site2.com. I forwarded the domain, to a port that is forwarded to that box. wanip:1235, 1235 is then forwarded to the internal IP of site2's server. But when I go to www.site2.com I get the 404 page of www.site1.com. I need www.site2.com to go to the right server. Is this something I can do in the virtual hosts of www.site1.com or is it something else. Also, if this isn't entirely possible, or if its a big process, I can just move www.site1.com to the www.site2.com's server, and use virtual hosts, that is an option that I would be okay with.

  I need to secure a dedicated server for intranet use, the server is managed so will have software based security, but what other security should be considered for enterprise level security? The intranet is a host for an ECM (Alfresco) managing and storing sensitive documents. As the information is sensitive we are trying to make it as secure as reasonably possible (requirement in UK law). We plan to encrypt the data on the database. It will be connected to via SSL encryption. Should we consider Hardware firewall, Private lan between the application server and database server?

• safe to setup NAS in virtual image with web server?

  My current setup is Ubuntu Desktop, running Apache + MySQL + PHP stack. I use this image to host my small website to the outside world. I want to now run a virtual machine on the box, that will act as the FreeNAS box for my internal network. This sounds like a bad idea if the website gets hacked/attacked. Should I just give up and grab a dedicated machine instead? Can I instead virtualize the web server and NAS side by side on this machine?

• Best way to administer a website remotely

  I have a Windows computer running an intranet website with IIS and I was wondering what the best way was to administer it from another computer, in this case, a Mac. What I want to do: Be able to edit pages from my Mac. VNC into the server because it is 'headless'. (Already have this set up) My current file syncing setup: I have Dropbox setup to sync files between the computers and then use PureSync to sync the files in the Dropbox folder into the wwwroot folder.   We have an application we host in a third party data center for our clients. We have multiple clients running the same application on several racks of servers. Most of our clients require that our servers be SAS70 compliant. Currently each server has it's own set of users and security settings that need to be configured. We are creating scripts to do this, but what would be the risks/advantages of joining all the servers to the domain for User Management and Group policy for enforcing security settings? The rational of some is that if the DC is hacked the whole network would be compromised where as if one stand alone hosted server is hacked everything else should be safe.

  I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens. What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server?

  This question already has an answer here: Can you help me with my capacity planning? 2 answers I currently have VPS server and I pay around $75 per month and I get: 40GB HD 2Gb RAM 100GB BW 6 core cpu (but i dont use much) I have only one live website running and traffic is only max 100 user visit per day. I mostly do the my testing stuff and some of my inter sites for playing with coding. But I do need one server. I am thinking of moving to Amazon EC2 if the price diff is not so much because then I can learn some more stuff. I am thinking of getting the 3 years Heavy utilization Reserved instance because my server will be running all day and night. I tried their online caluclator with Medium Instance Heavy reserved for 3 years for EC2 it comes $31 per month(effective price) and for EBS and S3 , I think even if thats it $40 for all other stuff. I will be at no loss for what I am getting at present. Am i correct or I missed something?? Now In my current VPS I have Apache for PHP sites and MOD wsgi for python sites. I am not sure if I will be able to do all that stuff in Amazon EC2. Can I host python and PHP sites both in Amazon EC2 instance using Named Virtual Hosts and Ngnix

• I can't connect to my WAMP server from a client on the same network

  Usually I would manually set up Apache and PHP but this time I thought I would go for the WAMP alternative. I've set up WAMP and it's working perfectly fine on the host machine. If I try and access the WAMP server from another machine on the same network (same subnet too: 192.168.1.*) I get this message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. I have been online and gone through steps. I have changed Allow from 127.0.0.1 to Allow from all and it's still not working. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.

• Pushing image changes to multiple servers

  I need the ability to push images out to multiple servers whenever they're updated. I've looked at Network Filesystems, but they're all but worthless due to their speed. Images can be uploaded to any one of 3 servers, and would then need to be copied to the other 2. Any suggestions? I'm open to try just about anything. EDIT: Graphics data (jpg, gif, png, etc). Linux only. We're currently using rsync. But having it work back and forth is getting cumbersome. It's all local network.

• Does it make a difference to read from a file instead of from MySQL?

  My web server currently is quite loaded. And I have a PHP file that is accessed very often remotely. The PHP file basically makes a MySQL query and returns a JSON formatted string. I am thinking to use a Cron job to write the necessary data into a file every 15 mins, so the PHP file doesn't make a MySQL query, instead it reads from the file. Does it make a difference? I mean to alleviate the server loading (CPU/MySQL) a bit?

  For example if I have 1) host adress 2) login 3) password, I am entering by SSH on ruby on rails hosting, then how can i be sured that this hosting belongs to a specific domain? for example how can I know if www.site.com - belongs to some specific hosting to which I have access. I am asking this because I have access to hosting of ruby on rails, and when i modify files, there is no changes, i've tried to use the files "script", "serv", "restart.txt" - by ssh: touch tmp/restart.txt ./serv restart script restart nothing of the above helped...and I don't know what to do, any ideas?

I have background in many fields on Computer Science but never got to focus on networking, server management, etc. What I'm asking is for recommended books, Basically, I would like to be able to be proficient and understand well how to manage domain names, zones, setting up mail servers, being able to install easily any web server, and such. Everything needed for proper server management through the shell. I will probably stick with Parallels, or Cpanel for a bit. But I dislike those, especially how it add a lot of intruding user accounts and configs on the file system. Thank you
