• FGLRX Drivers Keep Crashing | "Installation Media" reads Natty even though I'm in Precise

  I recently switched back to Ubuntu after a year or so of hardly touching my Ubuntu partition, and upgraded from Natty. Every time I start up, i get the "A problem has occurred..." popup, but it won't let me report it because Precise is not in beta. The details on the report show a segfault, and going through all the details, I notice that it lists Natty under "InstallationMedia" -- I just installed these drivers, so I'm really unsure why it's saying this. I wish I could copy this entire error report, but I see no way of doing that (is it stored somewhere in /var/log?). I'm new to the Unity interface (it's why I stopped using Ubuntu to begin with, but now that I'm getting used to it I'm liking it better). Thanks.

  I am looking at this: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu I need to create a boot disk to test Ubuntu to make sure it will run on a PC (Compaq Mini CQ10-120LA) I was given. I can create the boot disk off of a Mac (in English) or Windows (but Windows is in Spanish and foreign to me). Questions: What format do I choose for the USB stick? (I wish the instructions stated this). What is Dash? (Will I know when I run the installer?) Can I do this from a Mac or Windows computer? Or only from Ubuntu?

  There are so many (good) programming blogs out there. Some of them are consistent in what they post - as in they stick to programming topics. Some of them occasionally post on other unrelated topics. Also, not every programming post might be relevant to me. I might have read one good post once, and not wishing to miss any future good ones - subscribed to the blog. Subscribing to too many blog feeds usually leads to just skimming through all of them (which takes time as well). Another option might be to subscribe to aggregators, like Hacker News - but that too has a huge rate of link accumulation. How do you manage if you wish to keep up with the programming blogosphere and still maintain a good signal to noise ratio?

• Behavior tree implementation details

  I have been looking around for implementation details of behavior trees, the best descriptions I found were by Alex Champarand and some of Damian Isla's talk about AI in Halo 2 (the video of which is locked up in the GDC vault sadly). However, both descriptions fall short of helping one actually create a BT, one particular question has been bugging me for a while. When is the tree in a behavior tree evaluated? Furthermore: If the tree is in the middle of executing a sequence of actions (patrolling waypoints) and a higher priority impulse comes in (distraction sound) , how to switch to that side of the tree seamlessly without resorting to a state machine like system and if it is decided that the impulse was irrelevant (the distraction is too far away to affect this guard), how to go back to the last thing that the guard was doing ? I have quite a few questions like this and I don't wish to flood the board with separate queries so if you know of any resource where questions like these can be answered I would be very grateful.

• Keeping files private on the internet (.htaccess password or software/php/wordpress password)

  I was asked a while ago to setup a server such that only authenticated users can access files. It was like a test server for clients to view WIP sites. More recently, I want to do something similar for some of my files. Tho they are not very confidential, I wish that I am the only one viewing it. I thought of doing the same, Create a robots.txt User-agent: * Disallow: / Setup some password protection, .htpasswd seems like a very ugly way to do it. It will prompt me even when I log into FTP. I wonder if software method like password protected posts in Wordpress will do the trick of locking out the public and hiding content from Search Engines? Or some self made PHP script will do the trick?

• Why does nothing work after I randomly changed some file permissions?

  Ok so last night i was trying to set permissions to some folders in my File System, since apparently im not an admin on my own computer. And now everything got messed up today and i don't know what to do.. I lost my internet, the icon is not showing in the taskbar anymore. I lost my sound, there is no sound devices listed when i go into the sound menu. I can not log into root anymore, it gives me "sudo: must be setuid root" I can not plug anything in anymore, it will not recognize flash drives or external hard drives. It gives me a Internal Error message everytime i log in It doesn't let me log into the Grub screen anymore on boot up. What did i do? I have a lot of files on here i wish to put on a flash drive but it won't recognize it.

• Unity: Assigning String value in inspector

  I got an issue with Unity I can't seem to comprehend, and it is possibly very simple: I am trying to write a simple piece of code in JavaScript where a button toggles the activation of a shield, by dragging a prefab with Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab") and destroying it again (Haven't implemented that yet). I wish to assign this button through the inspector, so I have created a string variable which appears as intended in the inspector. Though it doesn't seem to register the inspector input, even though I changed the value through the inspector. It only provides the error: "Input Key named: is unknown" When the button name is assigned within the code, there is no issues. Code as follows: var ShieldOn = false; var stringbutton : String; function Start(){ } function Update () { if(Input.GetKey(stringbutton) && ShieldOn != true) { Instantiate(Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab"), Vector3 (0, 0, 0), Quaternion.identity); ShieldOn = true; } } Hope somebody can help, in advance... • Ubuntu 12.04 - Swiching Multiple Windows from a Program

  I'm having problem switching multiple windows from a same program. For example, if I have 2 windows opened for firefox at the same time and I wanted to switch from one another, it used to display a 2 small grid preview for each session when I click on the icon. However, that function doesn't seem to be working on my ubuntu 12.04 now. It doesn't response when I click on the firefox (or other application) icon in the sidebar. Does anyone know how to fix this? By the way, I know ALT-TAB can switch windows too, but it's hard to switch if I have 7 pdf documents opened at the same time. So I really wish to have this feature fixed. Thanks in advance.

• How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

• How can I install Ubuntu (SO many problems)

  I have a question, my friend tried installing Ubuntu on my notebook (Asus g75v) and nothing tried, at one point he went past the installation screen and every he used the mouse the screen flickered and the driver crashed (I assume) and it would go back a step, I heard that there is way to install ubuntu without any graphics, maybe that will help me with the screen flickering (I have a gtx 670m), so we tried WUBI installer, I tried installing with that and it gave me a Wubildr.mbr missing error, so I gave that up after several times, although I do notice that I have an intel driver, and I keep downloading AMD versions, does that effect anything? I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu and I wish to be able to run it on my laptop, I want to learn this OS and I cannot even install it, I am a bit concerned, if anyone can back at me with any answer at all, please don't hesitate to post, just please don't post if you don't know what's going on, thanks for listening! ~cheers -Dragos

• Using todolist (abstract spoon) on ubuntu 11.10?

  I wish to run todolist 6.3.8 (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/applications/todolist2.aspx) on ubuntu 11.10. I have installed the latest wine and winetricks. I have tried running: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/applications/todolist2.aspx winetricks vcrun2005 winetricks vcrun2008 winetricks vcrun6 Which installed all of the components. When I went to run todolist.exe, it started fine with the "first time wizard" (asking me where to save definitions and what file to open first), and then it stopped saying "the program todolist.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience". What can I do to make this (great) software work on ubuntu? Thanks.

  Which languages almost nobody talks about but has some interesting features or concepts? It must satisfy the following 2 criteria: It must have been created in 2000 or later. Ex.: REBOL, Squeak, Oberon, etc. are out. It can't have some fame among programmers. Ex.: Groovy, C#, Scala, Go, Clojure, D, etc are out. The language doesn't need be good or totally implemented. License or platform doesn't matter. The language needs to be new and interesting. I posted a good example of language I wanna know. If you wish TIOBE can be used as reference to measure "fame", but don't cling on it.

• How to grub-install ignore specific drive/partition

  Is it possible to use grub-install or update-grub to just search on specific disk/partition? (or ignore specific)? I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my hard drive, but i wished to do some testing on it without harming current installation, so I "rsynced" root partition (the only) to the USB partition (ext4). I did fix /etc/fstab on USB partition. The problem is that when I do grub-install /dev/sdb (usb) GRUB seems to confuse when UUIDs. Whatever I chose in GRUB it always boot from disk. In grub in edit mode I see that in two "UUID" lines are not the same. If I retype UUID from "first" to second "line" it boots from USB (as I wish). Is there any other way than fixing /boot/grub/grub.cfg each time? EDIT: the GRUB generated good when I booted from USB and grub-install from there, but question is still if it's possible ignore drives

  For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago!   How do you connect two vertices in 3DS Max 2013? I have two vertices which I wish to connect with a line to create an edge. (actually several) I have tried all I can think and done several Google searches but it only comes up with older versions method which say use the "connect" button... But I can't find the connect button on my version (see below) This is what my menu looks like: These are the vertices I'm trying to connect: Basically, I've edited an STL file and deleted some edges and vertices.   I wish to project a collection from one type (Something) to another type (SomethingElse). Yes, this is a very open-eneded question, but which of the two options below do you prefer? Creating a new instance using new: var result = query.Select(something => new SomethingElse(something)); Using a factory: var result = query.Select(something => SomethingElse.FromSomething(something)); When I think of a projection, I generally think of it as a conversion. Using new gives me this idea that I'm creating new objects during a conversion, which doesn't feel right. Semantically, SomethingElse.FromSomething() most definitely fits better. Although, the second option does require addition code to setup a factory, which could become unnecessarily compulsive.

• Ideas for card deck names [closed]

  I'm creating a card game, and wish to offer players to choose from different sets of playing cards. The game logic remains the same, only the design and graphics on the cards would be different. It would feature classic French set, German/Hungarian one, and a bunch of other custom designed ones. I'm looking for some cool names to give to those sets. I thought maybe to use names of some world cities like "London set", "Paris set", "Tokyo set", but there might be something better. I know this is really open-ended question, so there might not be a definitive "correct" answer, but I hope this kind of brainstorming would be useful to anyone looking for ideas to name a set of... well, anything. I'll up-vote any good idea, no matter if I don't end up using any of those.

• Help comparing Cocos2d and Unity3d for this project [closed]

  I will not go into details, but I would like to hear your opinions about this: Essentially, my project will be a 2d game, with lots of complex levels, where some might be simple and others might be a bit more deep, with physics, etc. We want to implement our very own online structure: logging in, leaderboards, achievements, friends etc with our own servers. This means no OpenFeint nor GameCenter at all. We expect this game to be very large in both graphics and audio. We wish to use in-app purchases. Now, we considered two options. Cocos2d and Unity3d. We need help deciding using the factors I mentioned before (networking, good performance even for a large game in terms of graphics and audio like this, in-app purchases, etc) which option would fit better this? Technically, both options can create 2d games. I'd like to hear your opinion.
