  • How can I compute the Big-O notation for a given piece of code?

    So I just took a data structure midterm today and I was asked to determine the run time, in Big O notation, of the following nested loop: for (int i = 0; i < n-1; i++) { for(int j = 0; j < i; j++2) { //1 Statement } } I'm having trouble understanding the formula behind determining the run time. I thought that since the inner loop has 1 statement, and using the series equation of: (n * (n - 1)) / 2, I figured it to be: 1n * (n-1) / 2. Thus equaling (n^2 - 1) / 2. And so I generalized the runtime to be O(n^2 / 2). I'm not sure this is right though haha, was I supposed to divide my answer again by 2 since j is being upped in intervals of 2? Or is my answer completely off?

    Currently, in my game - I'm not using XNA's SpriteBatch to render anything(I am using Farseer Physic's Debug View), and I was wondering how I would render something like this: only using XNA. My second question is once I have drawn these stenciled sprites , how would I give the "stenciled" lines a glow effect like so: I haven't done anything like this before so It is a very confusing experience for me.   • Should I fork for a major re-write that uses a small amount of the original code?

    I'm writing a library. It's a completely rewritten version of another one, to suit my needs (PCL compatibility, mainly). However, the API will be completely rewritten, as I'll need to change a lot of stuff around for PCL compliance. Also, as it is a rewrite, I won't be able to just start from the library and just change it bit by bit, as I typically see with forks. I tried that, but it just didn't work. So what should I do? Should I fork here or should I make a new library?

    I was recently browsing a open source JavaScript project. The project is a straight port from another project in C language. It mostly use static methods, packed together in classes. Most classes are implemented using this pattern : Foo = (function () { var privateField = "bar"; var publicField = "bar";     function publicMethod() { console.log('this is public');     } function privateMethod() { console.log('this is private'); } return {   publicMethod : publicMethod, publicField : publicField }; })(); This was the first time I saw private methods implemented that way. I perfectly understand how it works, using a anonymous method. Here is my question : is this pattern a good practice ? What are the actual limitations or caveats ?   • In what ways can I test an image slideshow javascript code?

    I have a slideshow of images (and links) on a page. These images are part of a JSON response to a request sent after the page loads. The slideshow is set to play at an interval of 2 seconds. The slideshow can be paused, played over, and all other controls a normal slideshow would have. As a Rails dev, I proposed cucumber but the javascript guys in the team are not comfortable with ruby. I saw some cucumber for javascript libraries coming up, still in experimental stage. I checked out jasmine and related tutorials but all I could get from them is how I can carry out any internal functional testing such as credit-cart validation, etc. - which I think could actually be handled in unit testing? (Screw the research I did and) How should I go about testing this and similar components?

    Running the "service service_name status" command gives three different types of output when three different service_names are used. I tried with atftpd, apache2, and isc-dhcp-server, as shown below. user@host:~$ service atftpd status Usage: /etc/init.d/atftpd {start|stop|restart|reload|force-reload} user@host:~$ service apache2 status Apache2 is running (pid 1103). user@host:~$ service isc-dhcp-server status isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 5696 Could this be because atftpd has not been converted to Upstart? The status for isc-dhcp-server shows "start/running" which indicates it has been converted to use Upstart. I would've thought apache2 would have been converted to Upstart already. If it has then why does it not display "start/running"?

So, as you understood my problem is that I want to check if "Certain Applications" are already installed on the user's machine? I'm generating the installer using Advanced Installer. First few questions: What is Upgrade Code? Advanced installer has option, Product Version (identify by Upgrade Code) What is Product Code? Advanced installer Product Version (identify by Product Code) Component is installed : GUID. What is GUID? All the above three has values like this: {49EB7A6A-1CEF-4A1E-9E89-B9A4993963E3} I don't know what these values are but it seems that computer is recognizing software using this kind of strange ID. My required applications are MySQL DBMS MySQL .NET Connector One fact that I discovered is Upgrade Code & Product Code can be extracted from its "msi installer". Observations from above data: - surprisingly, it couldn't find UpgradeCode from installer of mysql.data.*.msi. I wonder why? This contradicts with my above observation. - ProductCode for all different versions is same here. This again contradicts my above observations. -I still don't know how to find GUID. Now, What exactly are these ProductCode & UpgradeCode & GUID. Which denotes what? Why are above observations contradicting? I don't care about versions. I don't want to depend on Application Name then how do I check if MySQL driver & MySQL ADO .NET. Does detection become simple if they are .NET assemblies? How to do then? I don't want to ship the assemblies with my deployed files.
