I’ve been working with and among MVP’s for quite a while and quite frankly felt left out.  Well, I’m finally part of the crowd. I received an MVP for Visual Studio ALM.  This makes me VERY proud as I know the high caliber of the existing Visual Studio ALM MVP’s and am honored to now count myself among them. • Best practice for storing HTML coming from text fields to a database?

  I have an application that allows users to edit certain parts of text and then email that out. My question is what is the best way to store this in a Microsoft SQL Server database. Right now I have two tables, one holding the HTML data and one holding the plain text data. When the user saves the info, it replaces newlines with br's and puts it in the HTML-conntaining table and then puts the regular text in the other table. This way the text box has the newlines when they go to edit, but the table that contains the HTML data, has the BR's. This seems like a silly way to do things. What would be the best practice? • Skyrim Nexus Mods on Xbox 360 by use of dawnguard?

  i think it's possible i opened up the dawnguard marketplace content and it consists 3 files: dawnguard.bsa < mod dawnguard.esp <- mod installing file. and spa.bin <-dont know where this is for. and it has been confirmed you can use the top 2 files on pc for a not fully functional dawnguard (barely functional to be exact) and if we could just replace or add a few other bsa and esp files to this marketplace content we could get mods up and running on xbox altough i need confirmation on this. I also have no clue where the spa.bin file for is, i need to examine it some further. Further this is adding a few non-distributed Files to marketplace content and wont get you booted from XBL. Also if anyone wants to examine these files for further information i will gladly share them with you. if you have any information or answers please email me at [email protected] thx

• Running Teamsite User Admin tool IWUSERADM.exe from ASP.NET

  It has really been a head scratching task for me. I 've tried many options but nothing worked. Finally I found a workaround on google to achive this by TaskScheduler. PROBLEM When we run Teamsite user administration command line tool IWUSERADM.exe though ASP.Net it gives following error: Application popup: cmd.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. CAUSE No specific cause, it seems to be a bug, supposed to be resolved with this Microsoft patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960266. and there is nothing related to permission issue, y web application is impersonated with an administrator account. off course running a bat file from dmin account is a potential secury threat but for this scenario lets conifned our discussion to run the command line tool. RESOLUTION I have not tried this patch as I have not permitted to run this patch on server. Below are the steps to achive the requirement. 1/ Create a batch file which runs the IWUSERADM.exe.         echo - Add Teamsite User    CD E:\Appli\GN00\iw-home\bin    iwuseradm add-user %1 2/ Temporarily create a schedule task and run  the .bat file by scheduled task by ASP.Net code using TaskScheduler http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/tsnewlib.aspx. 3/ Here is the function: private int AddTeamsiteUser(string strBatchFilePath, string strUser) { //Get a ScheduledTasks object for the local computer. • Recycle Old Hardware into a Showcase Table

  If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. • New Wine in New Bottles

  How many people, when their car shows signs of wear and tear, would consider upgrading the engine and keeping the shell? Even if you're cash-strapped, you'll soon work out the subtlety of the economics, the cost of sudden breakdowns, the precious time lost coping with the hassle, and the low 'book value'. You'll generally buy a new car. The same philosophy should apply to database systems. Mainstream support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12; many DBAS, if they haven't done so already, will be considering the migration to SQL Server 2008 R2. Hopefully, that upgrade plan will include a fresh install of the operating system on brand new hardware. SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are designed to work together. The improved architecture, processing power, and hyper-threading capabilities of modern processors will dramatically improve the performance of many SQL Server workloads, and allow consolidation opportunities. Of course, there will be many DBAs smiling ruefully at the suggestion of such indulgence. This is nothing like the real world, this halcyon place where hardware and software budgets are limitless, development and testing resources are plentiful, and third party vendors immediately certify their applications for the latest-and-greatest platform! As with cars, or any other technology, the justification for a complete upgrade is complex. With Servers, the extra cost at time of upgrade will generally pay you back in terms of the increased performance of your business applications, reduced maintenance costs, training costs and downtime. Also, if you plan and design carefully, it's possible to offset hardware costs with reduced SQL Server licence costs. In his forthcoming SQL Server Hardware book, Glenn Berry describes a recent case where he was able to replace 4 single-socket database servers with one two-socket server, saving about $90K in hardware costs and $350K in SQL Server license costs. Of course, there are exceptions. If you do have a stable, reliable, secure SQL Server 6.5 system that still admirably meets the needs of a specific business requirement, and has no security vulnerabilities, then by all means leave it alone. Why upgrade just for the sake of it? However, as soon as a system shows sign of being unfit for purpose, or is moving out of mainstream support, the ruthless DBA will make the strongest possible case for a belts-and-braces upgrade. • Naming Convention for Dedicated Thread Locking objects

  A relatively minor question, but I haven't been able to find official documentation or even blog opinion/discussions on it. Simply put: when I have a private object whose sole purpose is to serve for private lock, what do I name that object? class MyClass { private object LockingObject = new object(); void DoSomething() { lock(LockingObject) { //do something } } } What should we name LockingObject here? Also consider not just the name of the variable but how it looks in-code when locking. I've seen various examples, but seemingly no solid go-to advice: Plenty of usages of SyncRoot (and variations such as _syncRoot). Code Sample: lock(SyncRoot), lock(_syncRoot) This appears to be influenced by VB's equivalent SyncLock statement, the SyncRoot property that exists on some of the ICollection classes and part of some kind of SyncRoot design pattern (which arguably is a bad idea) Being in a C# context, not sure if I'd want to have a VBish naming. Even worse, in VB naming the variable the same as the keyword. Not sure if this would be a source of confusion or not. thisLock and lockThis from the MSDN articles: C# lock Statement, VB SyncLock Statement Code Sample: lock(thisLock), lock(lockThis) Not sure if these were named minimally purely for the example or not Kind of weird if we're using this within a static class/method. Several usages of PadLock (of varying casing) Code Sample: lock(PadLock), lock(padlock) Not bad, but my only beef is it unsurprisingly invokes the image of a physical "padlock" which I tend to not associate with the abstract threading concept. Naming the lock based on what it's intending to lock Code Sample: lock(messagesLock), lock(DictionaryLock), lock(commandQueueLock) In the VB SyncRoot MSDN page example, it has a simpleMessageList example with a private messagesLock object I don't think it's a good idea to name the lock against the type you're locking around ("DictionaryLock") as that's an implementation detail that may change. I prefer naming around the concept/object you're locking ("messagesLock" or "commandQueueLock") Interestingly, I very rarely see this naming convention for locking objects in code samples online or on StackOverflow. Question: What's your opinion generally about naming private locking objects? Recently, I've started naming them ThreadLock (so kinda like option 3), but I'm finding myself questioning that name. I'm frequently using this locking pattern (in the code sample provided above) throughout my applications so I thought it might make sense to get a more professional opinion/discussion about a solid naming convention for them. • IValidatableObject vs Single Responsibility

  I like the extnesibility point of MVC, allowing view models to implement IValidatableObject, and add custom validation. I try to keep my Controllers lean, having this code be the only validation logic: if (!ModelState.IsValid) return View(loginViewModel); For example a login view model implements IValidatableObject, gets ILoginValidator object via constructor injection: public interface ILoginValidator { bool UserExists(string email); bool IsLoginValid(string userName, string password); } It seems that Ninject, injecting instances in view models isn't really a common practice, may be even an anti-pattern? Is this a good approach? Is there a better one?
