• Unity 3D doesn't work on ubuntu 12.04 LTS in virtual box hosted by Windows 7 64bit

  Can't google out the solution through some time so I'm asking here. I have installed Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in virtual box hosted by Windows 7 64bit Simple my 3D stopped working after some kernel headers update<<< few months ago. Just like that. I don't member which version was it. In meantime there was 2 or 3 new releases of VirtualBox which I have installed. Every time I am updating VirtualBox Guest Additions to the newest version. My 3D in Ubuntu still doesn't work. root@pjadmin-VirtualBox:~# /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc. • 3D zooming technique to maintain the relative position of an object on screen

  Is it possible to zoom to a certain point on screen by modifying the field of view and rotating the view of the camera as to keep that point/object in the same place on screen while zooming ? Changing the camera position is not allowed. I projected the 3D pos of the object on screen and remembered it. Then on each frame I calculate the direction to it in camera space and then I construct a rotation matrix to align this direction to Z axis (in cam space). After this, I calculate the direction from the camera to the object in world space and transform this vector with the matrix I obtained earlier and then use this final vector as the camera's new direction. And it's actually "kinda working", the problem is that it is more/less off than the camera's rotation before starting to zoom depending on the area you are trying to zoom in (larger error on edges/corners). It looks acceptable, but I'm not settling for only this. Any suggestions/resources for doing this technique perfectly? If some of you want to explain the math in detail, be my guest, I can understand these things well.

• CIFS shares do not mount after upgrade to 12.10 from 12.04

  I have seen issues close to my problem but no one seems to have a definitive answer as to what is going on and why the failure occurs. I have a number of NAS devices on my home network and on a previous install of 12.04 and version prior mounting at login worked using this entry for each in fstab: //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=cp850,cp850 0 0 Now when I use this, 12.10 reports the standard - cannot mount bad option ... blah blah... The kern log reports that the CIFS option "codepage" unknown... changed entry to "unicode" and received the same error message. There are no other error messages or log entries that would indicate another issue, but this is the statement I used for quite awhile with version 12.04 and before. Is the codepage option obsolete in 12.10/CIFS now? Is there a codepage support program that I must load? Is there some kind of helper program that is required to supports the codepage option? A current review of the man pages at samba.org does not make mention of the option "codepage". Extremely confused - any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

We are in the early stages of our transformative experience with Fusion CRM but we believe the platform along with our people and processes are going to help us achieve our goals in the future.

• Ubuntu doesn't load, can't even open a terminal to type commands, even after boot repair

  When I start Ubuntu I only get my desktop picture and am unable to open a terminal to type any commands. When I try a Guest session all I get is a red Ubuntu backdrop, nothing else. I tried boot repair but no improvement. Summary information following boot repair: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8109809/ I can paste some of it here if someone can tell me which part of it is relevant. This all occurred after I tried to remove compizconfig (which I might not have completed), because it's been using up my CPU (running at 50-60% with compiz at the top in System monitor. My laptop has been running very slow since installing Ubuntu so I've been trying to fix that, also website videos play slow and the startup of Ubuntu has been faulty. I also installed a proprietory Nvidia driver (304) before this launcher issue occurred, in an effort to fix my video problem (didn't help anything). Laptop is Dell 620m with Intel Core 2; 1.83GHz, 2 GB RAM, Ubuntu 14.04 (new to Linux); 66GB Ubuntu partition. Everything works fine on the small XP partition of my laptop, but I've moved all my files to the larger Ubuntu portion. I wanted to try some answers I found to similar questions but they all seem to involve commands in a terminal and I can't open a terminal. How can I get the launcher back, along with access to my programmes etc? Thank you for any help.

• How to get sharing options to stick - ubuntu 12.04

  I'm having a really hard time trying to get my sharing set up on my 12.04 system. I've tried both desktop version and server - I'm a bit of a linux n00b, so I need a GUI, command line is beyond me and no time to learn it (not till after I get the shares setup, at least) My problem is, whenever I try to set permissions in Nautilus, it just reverts back to the default which is to "none" Basically when I choose an option... it doesn't stick. I can create shares, and it asks me if I want to add permissions automatically - but they do not stick either. When I go to look at the shared folders in Windows (or even on my Android Phone, or Mac) it gives me permissions errors and doesn't let me log in, despite me clicking "allow guest access" I have no idea what to do or where to go. I've tried searching forums and google, and I've tried everything I come across - no avail. I've even tried Mint builds to see if it's different, no change there either. Please help! I really want to setup a server to share my media files and do backups in my house. Thanks for your help!

  I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree.Which is where I have to do this work.So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors.So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.

• Windows Azure Horror Story: The Phantom App that Ate my Data

By just using the Azure Management Portal, you don’t get a lot of insight into what is happening inside your instances, which are just Windows VMs. This morning, I noticed something quite scary, and fittingly enough, it’s Halloween. I deleted a deployment after doing a new deployment and VIP swap. But, after a few minutes, the instance still appeared in my Stackify dashboard. I thought this odd, as we monitor these operations and remove devices that have been deleted. Digging in showed that it wasn’t a problem with Stackify. This instance was still there, and still sending data. You’ll notice though that the “Status” check shows that the instance no longer exists. And it gets scarier. I quickly checked the running services, and sure enough, the Windows Azure Guest Agent (which runs worker roles) was still running: “Surely, this can’t be” I’m thinking at this point. Knowing that this worker role is in our QA environment, it has debug logging turned on. And, using our log file tailing feature, I can see that, yes, indeed, this deleted deployment is still executing code. Pulling messages off queues. Sending alerts. Changing data. Fortunately, our tools give me the ability to manually disable the Windows service that runs this code. In the meantime, I have contacted everyone I know (and support) at Microsoft to address this issue. Needless to say, this is concerning. When you delete a deployment, it needs to actually delete. Not continue to eat your data. As soon as I learn more, I’ll be posting an update.

• Windows 8: SL and HTML

Well, my reaction is “hogwash”. Sure, HTML 5 is important and does some interesting stuff. Checkout what Bing.com is doing with it on some days and you can see. But to say that XAML is dead is nuts. I have been wrapping up bugs on a cross browser version of an application for awhile now. Whats the state of cross browser today? Well, better than a few years ago but far from perfect.  Each browser vendor interprets the specs in a little different way and you must account for them. The worst offender for major browsers? Apple and its Safari.  I had to make more changes for it than any other. Whats that got to do with XAML and SL/WPF?  Well, you write your SL code once and it runs in all browsers that support it, no changes. ipad does not? Well, they should be taken to court and forced too just like MS and others have been in the past for locking out competitors. Line of business applications? Write them in SL or WPF or both.  Use the power of XAML witch far out reaches html in any flavor and move on. We do need HTML 5 but its not a panacea nor will it replace all other technologies.

• Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • It could be worse....

  As "guest" pointed out, in my file I/O test I didn't open the file with O_SYNC, so in fact the time was spent in OS code rather than in disk I/O. It's a straightforward change to add O_SYNC to the open() call, but it's also useful to reduce the iteration count - since the cost per write is much higher: ... #define SIZE 1024 void test_write() { starttime(); int file = open("./test.dat",O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_SYNC,S_IWGRP|S_IWOTH|S_IWUSR); ... Running this gave the following results: Time per iteration 0.000065606310 MB/s Time per iteration 2.709711563906 MB/s Time per iteration 0.178590114758 MB/s Yup, disk I/O is way slower than the original I/O calls. However, it's not a very fair comparison since disks get written in large blocks of data and we're deliberately sending a single byte. A fairer result would be to look at the I/O operations per second; which is about 65 - pretty much what I'd expect for this system. It's also interesting to examine at the profiles for the two cases. When the write() was trapping into the OS the profile indicated that all the time was being spent in system. When the data was being written to disk, the time got attributed to sleep. This gives us an indication how to interpret profiles from apps doing I/O. It's the sleep time that indicates disk activity.

• Adventures in Lab Management Configuration: Part 3 of 3

  This is long overdue.  But here it is. In the previous two sections I have discussed on how I got a CMMI v4.2 to take on the same fields as v5 and therefore be able to communicate with MTM and Lab Manager.  And that was quite a success. Yet when I opened up Lab Management while it was fully aware of the VMs being there, it refused to let me enroll them into an environment.  It kept stating there was no suitable host to deploy the VM to, error TF259115. This was an indication something was not matching the expected network configuration between TFS and Hyper-V/SCVMM. So, here are a couple of things that took place: Verified the network segment specified for network isolation matched what was configured physically for either DHCP or manually assigned IP addressing for the guest VMs Made sure TFS was fully aware of the configuration settings for the network location name.  For that I issued:  tfsconfig lab /settings /networklocation:”<name of the network location configured in SCVMM” On that last item, that was key to making sure Lab Management communicated with the VMs and for it to allow enrollment into the new Virtual Environment.

• If you develop on multiple operating systems, is it better to have multiple computers + displays?

  I develop for iOS and Linux. My preferred OS is Ubuntu. Now my software shop (me and a partner) is developing for Windows too. Now the question is, is it more efficient to have multiple workstations, one for each target OS? Efficiency and productivity is a higher priority than saving money. I have a 3.4Ghz i7 desktop workstation running Ubuntu and virtualized Windows with two displays, and I'm putting together an even more powerful i7 Hackintosh with 16GB RAM (to replace my weak 2.2Ghz i5 Macbook Pro). My specific dilemma is whether I should sell the first computer and triple boot on the second one, or buy two more displays and run both desktop systems simultaneously. Would appreciate answers from developers who write software for multiple OSes. Running guest OSes in VirtualBox on one system not ideal, because in my experience performance is seriously degraded under virtualization. So the choice is between dual/triple booting on one system vs having two systems, one for OSX+iOS/Windows (dual boot) and the other for Ubuntu (which I prefer to use as my main OS). For much of our work, I write a server-side application in Linux and a client for iOS (or for Windows or OS X) simultaneously.

• X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

  It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem? • How do I draw a dotted or dashed line?

  I'm trying to draw a dashed or dotted line by placing individual segments(dashes) along a path and then separating them. The only algorithm I could come up with for this gave me a dash length that was variable based on the angle of the line. What I would like is for the dash length to be the same no matter what angle the line is. As is, it's just adding 75 thousandths of the line length to the x and y, so if the line is and a 45 degree angle you get pretty much a solid line. If the line is at something shallow like 85 degrees then you get a nice looking dashed line. So, the dash length is variable, and I don't want that. How would I make a function that I can pass a "dash length" into and get that length of dash, no matter what the angle is? If you need to completely disregard my code, be my guest. I'm sure there's a better solution.

• Only one user can connect to Ubuntu samba server

I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time. • Two interesting big data sessions around Openworld

• Brownfield Support for OVMSS

  The area of virtualization saw quite a few enhancements with version 12.2. There's one particular virtualization enhancement that can make a big difference for a lot of people: support for brownfield Oracle VM Servers for SPARC. Brownfield refers to Oracle VM Servers for SPARC that were created outside of Ops Center. In older versions of Ops Center, you couldn't really do anything with them - Ops Center could only manage OVM Servers that it created. If you had OVM Servers outside of Ops Center, you'd have to recreate them if you wanted to manage them. In 12.2, though, this problem is cleared up. You can discover and manage OVM Servers for SPARC that you created outside of Ops Center, so long as the LDom Manager is running. When you discover the control domain, all of the logical domains are automatically discovered and managed and appear under the control domain in the Asset tree. If you want to use server pools and migrate the logical domains to a different Oracle VM Server for SPARC system, you'll need to move the metadata to a shared library and use shared Fibre Channel or iSCSI LUNs for the guest domain storage and add the server to a server pool. • 1360x768x32 Resolution in Windows 8 in VirtualBox

  My Lenovo ThinkPad's built-in screen maxes at 1366x768x32. I wanted to use that same resolution with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of VirtualBox. So, what did I do? Downloaded the latest build of VirtualBox v4.1.6 (because it supports Windows 8 x64) Installed Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox as I did earlier this year. Installed Guest Additions. Ran the CustomVideoMode described in this blog post. …and quickly found out that I didn’t have the option to use 1366x768x32 inside of VirtualBox despite using the following command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata  "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1920x1080x32   So how do you fix it? If you do a little research on this resolution, then you will find it is a non-standard resolution. Even if you run the command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32 It will still not show that resolution inside of VirtualBox. You can fix this easily by using the following command as shown below: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1360x768x32 I hope that you noticed the command used the resolution of 1360 instead of 1366. Now if you go to your display option for Windows 8 inside of Virtualbox then you can select that resolution. Anyways, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem. • Ubuntu 11.10 won't let me login; it kicks me back to login screen

  I was just copying files from my external HDD to my .wine directory, when I noticed the place where the launchers are (Unity desktop) was getting fuzzy and holding onto graphics from the things in the location prior(i have it autohide when a window covers it). I assumed it was just RAM problem, so I canceled the copying, since it wasn't actually important. The glitch remained, and so did another; very slow response time. The mouse moved just fine, but windows were waiting about a minute after I hit the x button to close or even switch active window. Once again, I blamed RAM (only have 2 GBs) so I restarted. Usually, it autologs me into my account, since I'm the only user, but this time it presented me with the login screen. I thought it odd, but tried to log in. A black screen with some text pops up (assuming terminal screen) for half a second then kicks me back to the login screen. I tried the guest account and no luck. I went into terminal (alt+ctrl+f1) and logged in and it worked. I deleted .Xauthority, made new account, and even rebooted quite a few times, all to no avail. Anyone have an idea?
