• Conflict resolution for two-way sync

  How do you manage two-way synchronization between a 'main' database server and many 'secondary' servers, in particular conflict resolution, assuming a connection is not always available? For example, I have an mobile app that uses CoreData as the 'database' on the iOS and I'd like to allow users to edit the contents without Internet connection. In the same time, this information is available on a website the devices will connect to. What do I do if/when the data on the two DB servers is in conflict? (I refer to CoreData as a DB server, though I am aware it is something slightly different.) Are there any general strategies for dealing with this sort of issue? These are the options I can think of: 1. Always use the client-side data as higher-priority 2. Same for server-side 3. Try to resolve conflicts by marking each field's edit timestamp and taking the latest edit Though I'm certain the 3rd option will open room for some devastating data corruption. I'm aware that the CAP theorem concerns this, but I only want eventual consistency, so it doesn't rule it out completely, right? • MacPro 1,1 video's card

  I just bought a Mac Pro 1,1 from my coworkers and I'm looking to upgrade video card as the one inside is very noisy. What are my options? Basically I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, in fact i'd rather to spend as little as possible and get low end or mid range card, I'm not really playing games all that much so pretty much anything will do, I'd prefer 2xx series though. Current Mac Pro sells w/ GT120, Apple sells upgrade kit for $149 (which is okay, I just not sure if I'll be able to use this card on such an old Mac Pro)

• www-data is unable to write to an NFS share

  On Debian Squeeze, I created an NFS share with these options rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,insecure and on the other Debian Squeeze I can successfully mount it and read write with root, but this share is intended to be used by Apache. I changed the permission to 777 just to make sure. And still, the www-data user can read, create files but not write to them! It does not sound to me like the typical permissions problem, maybe something related to NFS, a lock problem that I am not aware of. Any idea is welcome.

• Outlook 2010 Unable to See Free/Busy Information While Outlook 2007 can

  In this office, most of us are using Outlook 2007, while a few of us uses Outlook 2010. For Outlook 2007, we are able to view other people's free busy information after hacking the registry of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar and enter a new DWORD value data called 'UseLegacyFB' and set the value as 1. Once we do that, we are able to view people's free/busy information. I don't know what to do with the Outlook 2010, since hacking the registry and updating windows did not work. Help? :(

• Query something and return the reason if nothing has been found

  Assume I have a Query - as in CQS that is supposed to return a single value. Let's assume that the case that no value is found is not exceptional, so no exception will be thrown in this case. Instead, null is returned. However, if no value has been found, I need to act according to the reason why no value has been found. Assuming that the Query knows the reason, how would I communicate it to the caller of the Query? A simple solution would be not return the value directly but a container object that contains the value and the reason: public class QueryResult { public TValue Value { get; private set; } public TReason ReasonForNoValue { get; private set; } } But that feels clumsy, because if a value is found, ReasonForNoValue makes no sense and if no value has been found, Value makes no sense. What other options do I have to communicate the reason? What do you think of one event per reason? For reference: This is going to be implemented in C#.

• how to workaround glassfish 3.0.1 admin page slow startup?

  I've installed netbeans which comes with glassfish. i just got a book about glassfish and i wanted to try.the first surprise is the time it took to the admin page to load. i've found on serverfault and by googling that the server is making call to external resource on the network on online (not sure about that). but the adding of the java options didn't speed up the loading of the admin page. how to work around it? i've heard so good about glassfish that this leaves me perplexed. thanks for reading and for helping.

  For several years I wanted to move from Windows to OSX. Mainly because back then Windows95/98/2000 were terrible options. Now I have finally put my hands on this. Just when Vista and Win7 seems to redeem all the mistakes from their predecessors. The most terrible rant is the lack of the following keys: PageUp, PageDown, Home, End, Supr Not having those made my first programming day terrible on OSX. I don't regret switching, but somehow I expected something else. So: Have you considered switch to mac? What has stopped you? What is holding you back? If you have switched already, are you willing to comeback? (Now I run XP/Vista/Ubuntu/OSX in the same machine, yeah!!)

• Apache virtual host documentroot in other folders

  I am trying to set up a couple ov VritualHost in my Apache, but I would like to put the DocumentRoot of these virtual host on folders outside the basic www folder. • Execute local script requiring arguments on Linux via plink

  Is it possible to execute (from windows) a local script with arguments on a remote linux system? Here's what I got: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh Is there a way to do this same thing, but able to give input parameters to hello.sh? I've tried many things, including: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh input1 input2 In this case it seems that plink thinks that input1 and input2 are its arguments.. which makes sense. • Why does Ubuntu 13.10 not detect my Win7 partition?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 7 on my DELL INSPIRON 14z 5423 laptop and I'm new to all of this. I'm using the Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit ISO burned onto a CD. The first time I tried to install it, Ubuntu said it did not detect any other OS, which meant I only had 4 options: Erase disk and install Ubuntu (I don't want to do this) Encrypt new Ubuntu. Use LVM. Something else. If I choose the Something else option, it brings me to the partition menu and says that I have 1 disk with free space of (500Gb), but that's not true because I have Windows 7. I restarted the laptop several times and booted the CD again and I got exactly the same as I did previously. How do fix this problem and install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7? • Compressing/compacting messages over websocket on Node.js

  We have a websocket implementation (Node.js/Sock.js) that exchanges data as JSON strings. As our use cases grow, so have the size of the data transmitted across the wire. The websocket protocol does not natively offer any compression feature, so in order to reduce the size of our messages we'd have to manually do something about the serialisation. There appear to be a variety of LZW implementations in Javascript, some which confuses me on their compatibility for in-browser use only versus transmission across the wire due to my lack of understanding on low-level encodings. More importantly, all of them seem to take a noticeable performance drag when Javascript is the engine doing the compression/decompression work, which is not desirable for mobile devices. Looking instead other forms of compact serialisation, MessagePack does not appear to have any active support in Javascript itself; BSON does not have any Javascript implementation; and an alternative BISON project that I tested does not deserialise everything back to their original values (large numbers), and it does not look like any further development will happen either. What are some other options others have explored for Node.js?

• VMware two vSwitches Guests can't communicate between them

  I have some servers in this configuration: And I am not able, from VMGuest1, to ping either VMGuest3 or VMGuest4. I can, however, ping Host1 and Host2, which are attached to pSwitch1. The behavior is the same with VMGuest3 or 4 trying to ping VMGuest 1 or 2. I don't have promiscuity enabled for any of these switches, nor do I have a bridge set up inside ESXi for the virtual switches. I know that one of these options is usually necessary when trying to get connectivity between two virtual switches. These switches are connected, however, through their respective physical switches which are bridged together. Ping just times out, arp request looks like this: [root@vmguest1:~]# arp -a vmguest3 vmguest3.example.com (1.2.3.4) at <incomplete> on eth0 [root@vmguest1:~]# arp -a host1 host1.example.com (1.2.3.5) at 00:0C:64:97:1C:FF [ether] on eth0 VMGuest1 can reach hosts on pSwitch1, so why can't it get to hosts on vSwitch1 through pSwitch1 the same way?

• tmux: unbind C-[ as a prefix

  I have a fairly straight forward .tmux.conf file which does nothing more but to define a couple of options, such as history-limit. I have not added any custom key bindings yet. I find it extremely annoying that I cannot unbind C-[ as a prefix in tmux. I thought it might be a terminal or shell issue, but confirmed same behaviour on a configless machine using Bash and [Gnome] Terminal. So the question really is, how do I unbind the C-[ key from tmux? ** I have base-index 1 set.

  When running any sudo command from Jenkins I get the following error: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified I understand that I can solve this by adding a NOPASSWD entry to my /etc/sudoers file which will allow user jenkins to run commands without needing a password. I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=(ALL)NOPASSWD:/home/vts_share/test/sudotest.sh ...but this leads to the following issue: how to avoid specifying full path in sudoers file? I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL ...but this allows user jenkins to avoid the password prompt for all commands, which seems a bit unsafe. I'm just curious what my options are here, and if there are any best practices I should consider.

Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10. • Compiling custom kernel 3.7.x lowlatency on Ubuntu 12.04

  All, I have a peculiar problem with trying to compile a lowlatency flavor of the latest 3.7 kernel. I retrieved the prepatched source from the launchpad using bzr, compiled it using the usual make-kpkg using the current config file plus default options for the rest, installed the kernel and booted into it. Everything works except for the fglrx and wl drivers that I had to install in the original 12.04 lowlatency kernel. So, I tried recompiling these and succeeded with both of them (no errors were reported)--wl driver required a minor adjustment to system.h include while latest fglrx 12.11 beta11 (released yesterday, Dec. 3rd, 2012) compiled without the hitch. Yet, when I try to modprobe either module (both having in common the fact that they were built after the kernel, fglrx as a deb, and wl via the usual make/make install), I get "FATAL: no MODULENAME module found" (MODULENAME being either wl or fglrx). The graphic driver watermark shows 3D crossed out and "for testing purposes" (or "unsupported hardware," can't remember), and no fglrx or wl is loaded. More mysteriously, dmesg shows no attempt on kernel's behalf to load the said drivers, even though they are clearly in the right /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION folder. How is this possible? Has something fundamentally changed in 3.7 kernel that would prevent modprobing of these? I know that there is driver signing option that was merged recently but as far as I could tell the kernel config file generated by the build process had that disabled. OTOH, while building wl driver, I did get a warning that the driver was not signed... Then again, even if the kernel disallowed loading of those modules, shouldn't dmesg reflect that? Any thoughts on this one are most appreciated.

• What's an easy way to shut down a computer that I'm connected to via RDP

  I have a secondary machine on my local network that I usually use via RDP. Most of the time, it's on 24/7, but there are times when I may want to shut it down from the RDP client machine. The shutdown and restart options aren't available from the Windows XP start menu when you connect to a machine via RDP, so how can I shut this machine off without actually going to the physical machine? Also note that this computer currently doesn't have a monitor attached to it, which is partly why I want to be able to shut it down over RDP.

• Windows 7 Sub-Folders hidden in "Program Files" directory

  I have Google searched for an hour now and I am confounded. I am using InnoSetup to install a .NET Winforms application that creates directories and folders on the fly. (I have set the folder options to display hidden files, folders...) Although the files that are added to "created" folders appear within the application, they do not show when using Windows Explorer or even when issuing a Dir from a command prompt. I have also modified the application to display (and delete) the contents of these (seemingly imaginary) folders, so I am sure they exist. What am I missing?

• Special function keys are mixed up on my Macbook Pro

  I recently sent my Macbook Pro (late 2008 model) to get a replaced logic board and top cover. When I got it back the Special function keys are mixed up. F3 - mutes sound - it should do expose f4 - decreases volume - it should show the dashboard f5 - increases volume ....etc, ... F11 - expose - it should decrease volume f12 - dashboard - it should increase volume I have checked and made sure that System PreferencesKeyboard"use all F keys as standard function keys" is not selected. And that no accessibility options are switched on either. How do I fix this? or should I bring it back to the repair shop? Thanks

• More than one way to skin an Audit

  I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! • Is Joerg Schilling's "sdd" a full replacement for "dd"

  I'm trying to use 'sdd' on my Debian system, and can't get one set of options to work. They do work in 'dd' so I am wondering if I am specifying them incorrectly, or if sdd didn't implement them, or something else. What I want to do is sdd if=/dev/hdh1 of=/bay5/imagebay1 bs=4096 conv=sync,noerror if I leave out the "conv=..." option, it works, or at least starts copying data. sdd if=/dev/hdh1 of=/bay5/imagebay1 bs=4096 Can you shed a bit of light?

  I am trying to pull names from an XML Document using a vbscript. XML Document structure <Aliases> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> ... </Aliases> the XML File might have 100 rows with the same name coming from several different CaseID's because for this part of my vbscript I am trying to pull all the different Names from all cases, but here is the issue, I don't want to return duplicates. is there a way to do this with an xPath Expression or should I try to do this with VBScript? EDIT I am pretty sure that I am going to have to do this with VBScript. Would it be Faster and more efficient to solve this issue in VBScript, xPath, or in populating the XML I am retrieving information from ( this might prove more difficult than the other two options ) I am also asking a Similar question on stackoverflow
