  • Google Maps API v3... non-mobile?

    I'm trying to make a Google Maps widget for my website but all of the examples are for full-screen mobile devices. The tutorials work when I copy paste them exactly as shown but they don't seem to work when I want them to only occupy a portion of the page. From what I've read, the v3 is the best API yet (for what I need) because of its speed and compatibility with mobile devices. I plan to make a widget very similar to the MarkerClusterer example from the demo gallery but I can't get it working. Is this a common issue? I know I'm being vague but I would appreciate some help.   • How do I list all non-system stored procedures?

    I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know?   • What CSS should I use to create a series of horizontal, non-wrapping blocks?

    I have a set of dynamically generated content - anywhere between 1 and about 25 blocks (each of which I want to be about 250px wide. Clearly, this can run off-screen, but that's fine since my design allows for horizontal scrolling (using jQuery - I don't want the browser to do it with its own scroll bars). So what CSS - cross-browser - is the best approach? Floats seem to wrap unreliably, and the dynamic nature of the content which changes frequently through ajax calls - means that recalculating the container width is not very practical. Other CSS-based option?

  • h264 inside FLV container vs. MP4 container?

    I am developing a tube site, and currently having issues with h264 format . By looking at youtube, I noticed they are putting their hi-def videos into mp4 container, so logically I did the same. Next, I installed mod_h264_streaming for lighttpd to make streaming and timeline-scrubbing work. Problem is, that large files (500mb+ at somewhat high resolution) take for EVER to even start buffering ( I read the flowplayer or other flash players need to download metadata first) . I moved the xmov atom to the front of the file with MP4Box (i tried qt-quickstart too) , and the problem didn't go away. Next I read online I need to interleave audio tracks, so I did that too. No change in slowness. So I tried putting the same exact h264 movie into an FLV container, and the playback buffering starts almost instantly - no slowness. So what am I missing here? Why would I choose MP4 container with mod_264_streaming module , which seems super-slow over a regular FLV container with lighttpd's built-in mod_flv_streaming ? Obviously many websites pick mp4 container , but I fail to understand why ? And as a side question - I tried using HTML5's VIDEO tag to try the same h264 MP4 movie, and the scrubbing is LIGHTING FAST! I looked into lighttpd's log file, and i noticed taht Flash Players append video.mp4?start=234 each time timeline is scrubbed, wheres HTML5's video tag does no such thing . Is this some sort of limitations of Flash ? Why Can't flash streaming be same fast as HTML5 streaming? Thanks to ALL who can help. I very much appreciate this community.

  • Where do current (not HTML5) browsers stand on clipboard support for non-text data?

    I don't really know where the line is between the browser itself and HTML/JS here. But let's say I want to write a web-app where I can copy a chunk of data from MSPaint (select, CTRL+c) and paste it into a web-page in some way... ultimately the point is the data goes to the server without me having to save it as a file first. Where are the problems here - browsers or client-side technologies? For instance if JS can't do it, could Flex/Silverlight? Advice on future technology welcome, but doesn't really answer the question - where are we right now with IE/FF/Chrome and JS/Flex/SL?

For convenience I use collect on a collection to gather them together. arr = collection.collect {|item| item.get_array_of_arrays} Now I would like to have a single array that contains all the arrays. Of course I can loop over the array and use the + operator to do that. newarr = [] arr.each {|item| newarr += item} But this is kind of ugly, is there a better way?

  • Stopping cookies being set from a domain (aka "cookieless domain") to increase site performance

    I was reading in Google's documentation about improving site speed. One of their recommendations is serving static content (images, css, js, etc.) from a "cookieless domain": Static content, such as images, JS and CSS files, don't need to be accompanied by cookies, as there is no user interaction with these resources. You can decrease request latency by serving static resources from a domain that doesn't serve cookies. Google then says that the best way to do this is to buy a new domain and set it to point to your current one: To reserve a cookieless domain for serving static content, register a new domain name and configure your DNS database with a CNAME record that points the new domain to your existing domain A record. Configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain. In your web pages, reference the domain name in the URLs for the static resources. This is pretty straight forward stuff, except for the bit where it says to "configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain". From what I've read, there's no setting in IIS that allows you to say "serve static resources", so how do I prevent ASP.NET from setting cookies on this new domain? At present, even if I'm just requesting a .jpg from the new domain, it sets a cookie on my browser, even though our application's cookies are set to our old domain. For example, ASP.NET sets an ".ASPXANONYMOUS" cookie that (as far as I'm aware) we're not telling it to do. Apologies if this is a real newb question, I'm new at this! Thanks.

  • Element.appendChild() hosed in IE .. workaround? (related to innerText vs textContent)

    I've heard that using el.innerText||el.textContent can yield unreliable cross-browswer results, so I'm walking the DOM tree to collect text nodes recursively, and write them into tags in the HTML body. What this script does is read hash substring valus from the window.location and write them into the HTML. This script is working for me in Chrome & Firefox, but choking in IE. I call the page with an URL syntax like this: http://example.com/pagename.html#dyntext=FOO&dynterm=BAR&dynimage=FRED UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Solution: I moved the scripts to before </body> (where they should have been) then removed console.log(sPageURL); and now it's working in Chrome, Firefox, IE8 and IE9. This my workaround for the innerText vs textContent crossbrowser issue when you are just placing text rather than getting text.   • Class initialization and synchronized class method

    Hi there, In my application, there is a class like below: public class Client { public synchronized static print() { System.out.println("hello"); } static { doSomething(); // which will take some time to complete } } This class will be used in a multi thread environment, many threads may call the Client.print() method simultaneously. I wonder if there is any chance that thread-1 triggers the class initialization, and before the class initialization complete, thread-2 enters into print method and print out the "hello" string? I see this behavior in a production system (64 bit JVM + Windows 2008R2), however, I cannot reproduce this behavior with a simple program in any environments. In Java language spec, section 12.4.1 (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/second_edition/html/execution.doc.html), it says: A class or interface type T will be initialized immediately before the first occurrence of any one of the following: T is a class and an instance of T is created. T is a class and a static method declared by T is invoked. A static field declared by T is assigned. A static field declared by T is used and the reference to the field is not a compile-time constant (§15.28). References to compile-time constants must be resolved at compile time to a copy of the compile-time constant value, so uses of such a field never cause initialization. According to this paragraph, the class initialization will take place before the invocation of the static method, however, it is not clear if the class initialization need to be completed before the invocation of the static method. JVM should mandate the completion of class initialization before entering its static method according to my intuition, and some of my experiment supports my guess. However, I did see the opposite behavior in another environment. Can someone shed me some light on this? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  • How do I controll clipping with non-opaque graphics-item's in Qt?

    I have a bunch of QGraphicsSvgItem's in a QGraphicsScene that are drawn connected by QGraphicsLineItem's. This show's a graph of a tree-structure. What I want to do is provide a feature where everything but a selected sub-tree becomes transparent. A kind of "highlight this sub-tree" feature. That part was easy, but the results are ugly because now the lines can be seen through the semi-transparent svg's. I am looking for some way to still clip other QGraphicsItem's in the scene to the svg item's, giving the effect that the svg's are semi-transparent windows to the background. How do I get the QGraphicsSvgItem's (or QGraphicsEllipseItem's in the example code) to still clip the lines even though they are semi-transparent?

    hello, I have a one to many relationship and when I try to delete a parent that haves more than one child the berforeInsert event gets called on the frst child.   • How to use PHP-based authentication from non-PHP based AJAX app?

    I've been asked to create a stand-alone webapp using "straight" HTML and Javascript that does user authentication against an existing PHP app (backend is MySQL). Unfortunately, I really don't have a firm grasp on how PHP authentication works, and I'd rather not invest a lot of time in learning PHP just for this particular case. I can see two possibilites so far 1) create a PHP wrapper around my new app and use native PHP authentication (don't like this) 2) create a simple REST-ful webservice around the PHP authentication (don't know how to do this) Anything else I should consider? Help is much appreciated!

  • Does it ever make sense to make a fundamental (non-pointer) parameter const?

    I recently had an exchange with another C++ developer about the following use of const: void Foo(const int bar); He felt that using const in this way was good practice. I argued that it does nothing for the caller of the function (since a copy of the argument was going to be passed, there is no additional guarantee of safety with regard to overwrite). In addition, doing this prevents the implementer of Foo from modifying their private copy of the argument. So, it both mandates and advertises an implementation detail. Not the end of the world, but certainly not something to be recommended as good practice. I'm curious as to what others think on this issue. Edit: OK, I didn't realize that const-ness of the arguments didn't factor into the signature of the function. So, it is possible to mark the arguments as const in the implementation (.cpp), and not in the header (.h) - and the compiler is fine with that. That being the case, I guess the policy should be the same for making local variables const. One could make the argument that having different looking signatures in the header and source file would confuse others (as it would have confused me). While I try to follow the Principle of Least Astonishment with whatever I write, I guess it's reasonable to expect developers to recognize this as legal and useful.

    I would like to set up a Mac buildbot slave, but unfortunately it's not possible to install Mac OS X 10.5 on my XenServer hypervisor. So, I've had an idea, but not quite sure whether or not it'll work. The application is C++, and on Mac it's compile using GNU Make. I have a Mac desktop PC, and I was hoping I could copy the .h and .lib files on to a Linux box, and try to build against the Mac headers: #include <mach-o/dyld.h> #include <AvailabilityMacros.h>

    I am trying to do a simple hw problem involving namespace, static data members and functions. I am getting an unresolved external symbol error Error 1 error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "private: static double JWong::SavingsAccount::annualInterestRate" (?annualInterestRate@SavingsAccount@JWong@@0NA) SavingsAccount.obj SavingsAccount And I don't see why I am getting this error. Maybe I don't know something about static variables compared to regular data members that is causing this error.   • How to commit a non-subversioned file into a repository ?

    The environment: SVN, Netbeans, Hudson SVN Project A: Builds a library file (foo.jar). The build file is under /dist, which is ignored for svn, the sourcecode is under svn control. SVN Project B: holds all library files. (other SVN projects get all their libraries from here via external svn) Question: I want to commit foo.jar from A into B. How to do that ? foo.jar cannot be added or committed because it is not under SVN control. Thanks for any hints ! (The question is independent from the IDE and CI Server)
