    We are starting to use Mercurial for source control. We have configured the HGRC configuration file to do an auto update after we push to the "central" repository. With some PCs we get this error msg: warning: changegroup hook exited with status -1 HGRC looks like this: [ui] username=ADMIN verbose=true [hooks] changegroup = hg update >&2 Later we perform the update manually and everything works right.

    I'm working on a Grails web app that would be similar in access patterns to StackOverflow or MyLifeIsAverage - users can vote on entries, and their votes are used to sort a list of entries based on the number of votes. Votes can be placed while the sorted select queries are being performed. Since the selects would lock a large portion of the table, it seems that normal transaction locking would cause updates to take forever (given enough traffic). Has anyone worked on an app with a data access pattern such as this, and if so, did you find a way to allow these updates and selects to happen more or less concurrently? Does anyone know how sites like SO approach this? My thought was to make the sorted selects dirty reads, since it is acceptable if they're not completely up to date all of the time. This is my only idea for possibly improving performance of these selects and updates, but I thought someone might know a better way.

It took me less than a week to rewrite existing app and more up to 2 months to write from zero my own. That 2 months were really hard and interesting. It was my first big software development process. I researched almost everything concerning to my application. Read Code Complete. Even some articles on how to create user interface. Some psychology stuff. Typography, Colors. DAL, DB Structure, SOA, Patterns, UML, Load testing etc. I hope, that after a month or 2 I would get opportunity to continue working on my failed project, but before that, I would like to ask: What are common mistakes in software development? What you shouldn't do in any case?

  • Does isolation frameworks (Moq, RhinoMock, etc) lead to test overspecification?

    In Osherove's great book "The Art of Unit Testing" one of the test anti-patterns is over-specification which is basically the same as testing the internal state of the object instead of some expected output. To my experience, using Isolation frameworks can cause the same unwanted side effects as testing internal behavior because one tends to only implement the behavior necessary to make your stub interact with the object under test. Now if your implementation changes later on (but the contract remains the same), your test will suddenly break because you are expecting some data from the stub which was not implemented. So what do you think is the best approach to counter this? 1) Implement your stubs/mocks fully, this has the negative side-effect of potentially making your test less readable and also specifying more than necessary to make your test pass. 2) Favor manual, fully implemented fakes. 3) Implement your stubs/fakes so that they make your test just pass, and then deal with the brittleness that this might introduce.

Here is what is currently on my list: Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz sed & awk by Dougherty & Robbins (O'Reilly) The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas Head First Design Patterns Can anyone suggest anything else? Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

  • Building 64bit Qt on 32bit Xp computer

    I'm trying to build Qt in a shared 64 bit mode on my 32bit XP system. I can configure the QMake and start the 64bit build. The problem is that when the build starts, the first thing that happens in that the process builds ui, moc and rcc utility compilers in 64 bit mode, then tries to run them on my 32bit machine. Does anyone know how to configure the build so that it does not build those compilers first?

    [Participant Table [1994]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "I:\My Documents\Flamm Consulting\Migrations.accdb" failed with error code 0xC0209303. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed. Frankly, I'm confused about how SSIS should connect to Access 2007 - the UI just isn't very friendly - there's no file browser, for example. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my install - missing drivers, etc.

  • Methodology to understanding JQuery plugin & API's developed by third parties

    I have a question about third party created JQuery plug ins and API's and the methodology for understanding them. Recently I downloaded the JQuery Masonry/Infinite scroll plug in and I couldn't figure out how to configure it based on the instructions. So I downloaded a fully developed demo, then manually deleted everything that wouldn't break the functionality. The code that was left allowed me to understand the plug in much greater detail than the documentation. I'm now having a similar issue with a plug in called JQuery knob. http://anthonyterrien.com/knob/ If you look at the JQuery Knob readme file it says this is working code: <input type="text" value="75" class="dial"> $(function() { $('.dial') .trigger( 'configure', { "min":10, "max":40, "fgColor":"#FF0000", "skin":"tron", "cursor":true } ); }); But as far as I can tell it isn't at all. The read me also says the Plug in uses Canvas. I am wondering if I am suppose to wrap this code in a canvas context or if this functionality is already part of the plug in. I know this kind of "question" might not fit in here but I'm a bit confused on the assumptions around reading these kinds of documentation and thought I would post the query regardless. Curious to see if this is due to my "newbi" programming experience or if this is something seasoned coders also fight with. Thank you. Edit In response to Tyanna's reply.     Weird question I guess.. But I am not very math wiz - soo here goes.. I am trying to create a patterne (or variable patterns based on selection) based on x and y numbers (2 rows and 4 columns) and the direction of the counting of x numbers like: 1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 That one is easy, when number of x-columns is reached, next line and continue x count. But with eg. this one (still 2 rows and 4 columns): 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 upsie.. what if it is eg. 3++ rows and still 4 columns? 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 9-10-11-12 what would be the formula for this - or other possible variations (teaser for variations): 9-10-11-12 8-7-6-5 1-2-3-4 or reversed

  • .NET Database application guidance.

    Hello, I'm stumbling in the data wilderness and feel very lost, so i am asking for help. I have done some database apps in VS (C#) winforms for some time, wpf lately. These are small to medium apps (embedded dbs, a bit of sql server), like a restaurants, cash registers and similar. (15-20 tables) Until now, i have done all my datasets by drag and drop in Visual Studio designer. I spent weeks on web trying to find some complete solution how to write complete solution with typed datasets by hand from scratch (DAL, B.Objects) in hope to learn some architecture patterns along the way, but without success. So, finally question. Can someone recommend me what to learn for this type of applications, maybe move away from datasets , use some ORM ( maybe overkill, i dont know). Point me in some direction please.

  • How to handle authorization in the view layout

    Authorize attribute are good to do some access control base on Action but suppose that I have some UI element in the layout that should note be output unless the user is authorize. I could possibly set some boolean in the ViewBag but that is not the good solution I guess. Somewhere in the Layout.cshtml: @if (ViewBag.IsAuthorized) { <li>@Html.ActionLink("Index", "Admin")</li> } Let me know if there is a better solution. Thanks.

  • getView() in CountDownTimer's onTick return sometimes null

    I had recently a crash report where I could see that in the CountDownTimer's onTick method the getView() call returns null. I use the onTick method to display the remaining time in a textView. The textView is inside a Fragment. Since the CountDownTimer runs in the UI thread I have no idea why this had happened. What could be the cause for this and what is a possible workaround for this problem? Thanks!
