• XNA: Auto-populate content within the content project based on current folder/file structure and content management for large games

  1) Is it possible to implement a system where I can simply drop a new image into my content project's folder and VS will automatically see that and bring it into the project for compiling? 2) Similarly, if I wanted a specific texture I could state something like var texture = Game.Assets.Image["backgrounds/sky_02"]; (where Game is the standard XNA Game class and Assets is some kind of content manager statically defined within Game). I know this is fairly simple to implement manually and have done such things in the past (static Dictionary defined within Game) except this only works for relatively small games where you can have all assets loaded at the start without much issue. How would you go about making this work for games where content is loaded and unloaded based on level / area? I'm not asking for the solution, just how you would go about this and what things you would have to be aware of. Thanks.

  I have installed an Ubuntu Server. It obviously comes with no graphical interface. I tried to install it with: apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm Then I got an error message trying to login with Gnome and eventually I uninstalled everything: apt-get remove xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm However, it seems Ubuntu still has some scripts trying to launch Gnome since when starting I get: Starting GNOME Display Manager fail ... Stopping system v run level compatibility And the system stops forever (I know I can use ALT+F1) What should I modify to have this completely uninstalled? I cannit find anything on the rc2.d...

  In order to speed up Android development, I've edited my ~/.bashrc to add some paths to PATH: export PATH=${PATH}:/opt/android-sdk/tools:/opt/android-sdk/platform-tools This works just fine from the command line (I can just type android and, no matter where I am, the Android SDK and AVD Manager will start up just fine. However, if I try to type android in the Alt+F2 dialog (Run Application), it gives the following error: Could not open location 'file:///home/felix/android' Error stating file '/home/felix/android': No such file or directory Why is that? What PATH does the Run Application dialog use?

• How can I prevent or diminish Nautilus freezing problems?

  Hi, After upgrading the Ubuntu to 10.04 my Nautilus file manager gives lot of problem. Nautilus freezes after few minutes of start. I tried with Thunar, but I did not like that. Now I have Dolphin too, when Nautilus goes problem, then I start work with Dolphin. I do not like this. I want to work on Nautilus or equivalent one. I work with lot of images using GIMP and Inkscape. I tried many things including reinstalled the OS for 6 time in 4 months. I cannot leave Ubuntu, but I am limbing. Some body help me to fix it. Thanks in Advance.

• Agile Executives

  Over the years, I have experienced many different styles of software development. In the early days, most of the development was Waterfall development. In the last few years, I’ve become an advocate of Scrum. As I talked about last month, many people have misconceptions about what Scrum really is. The reason why we do Scrum at Veracity is because of the difference it makes in the life of the team doing Scrum. Software is for people, and happy motivated people will build better software. However, not all executives understand Scrum and how to get the information from development teams that use Scrum. I think that these executives need a support system for managing Agile teams. Historical Software Management When Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line, I doubt he realized the impact he’d have on Management through the ages. Historically, management was about managing the process of building things. The people were just cogs in that process. Like all cogs, they were replaceable. Unfortunately, most of the software industry followed this same style of management. Many of today’s senior managers learned how to manage companies before software was a significant influence on how the company did business. Software development is a very creative process, but too many managers have treated it like an assembly line. Idea’s go in, working software comes out, and we just have to figure out how to make sure that the ideas going in are perfect, then the software will be perfect. Lean Manufacturing In the manufacturing industry, Lean manufacturing has revolutionized Henry Ford’s assembly line. Derived from the Toyota process, Lean places emphasis on always providing value for the customer. Anything the customer wouldn’t be willing to pay for is wasteful. Agile is based on similar principles. We’re building software for people, and anything that isn’t useful to them doesn’t add value. Waterfall development would have teams build reams and reams of documentation about how the software should work. Agile development dispenses with this work because excessive documentation doesn’t add value. Instead, teams focus on building documentation only when it truly adds value to the customer. Many other Agile principals are similar. Playing Catch-up Just like in the manufacturing industry, many managers in the software industry have yet to understand the value of the principles of Lean and Agile. They think they can wrap the uncertainties of software development up in a nice little package and then just execute, usually followed by failure. They spend a great deal of time and money trying to exactly predict the future. That expenditure of time and money doesn’t add value to the customer. Managers that understand that Agile know that there is a better way. They will instead focus on the priorities of the near term in detail, and leave the future to take care of itself. They have very detailed two week plans with less detailed quarterly plans. These plans are guided by a general corporate strategy that doesn’t focus on the exact implementation details. These managers also think in smaller features rather than large functionality. This adds a great deal of value to customers, since the features that matter most are the ones that the team focuses on in the near term and then are able to deliver to the customers that are paying for them. Agile managers also realize that stale software is very costly. They know that keeping the technology in their software current is much less expensive and risky than large rewrites that occur infrequently and schedule time in each release for refactoring of the existing software. Agile Executives Even though Agile is a better way, I’ve still seen failures using the Agile process. While some of these failures can be attributed to the team, most of them are caused by managers, not the team. Managers fail to understand what Agile is, how it works, and how to get the information that they need to make good business decisions. I think this is a shame. I’m very pleased that Veracity understands this problem and is trying to do something about it. Veracity is a key sponsor of Agile Executives. • I need recommendations on free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence widget frameworks [on hold]

  I'm a PHP developer on Linux, and my manager wants a business intelligence dashboard. He wants to see in real-time our profit/loss stuff in fancy charts, based on our software sales. I could code it all from scratch and use Google Charts API or some other charts API to help me. However, I wanted to know if there was a free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence package out there, or some sort of widget framework that I could start with. That way, I can build the BI widgets inside that framework and not have to do everything from scratch. I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong stackexchange where to place this query. I don't know where to place this query, and do want to follow the rules.

• Wobble effects not working on Ubuntu 12.04

  Just couple of days before installed Ubuntu 12.04 with all the necessary upgradations. Also installed Compiz Settings Manager & loved the animations & wobble effects of windows. But after restarting windows today, started receiving error messages & Wobble effects are disappeared. Also, other settings created by me in my last login, like small sidebar icons, too disappeared & unable to find even option in "All Settings Appearance" to resize the icons. Loved Ubuntu 12.04, specially Animation & Wobble effects but unhappy with these errors. Thanks in advance.

• Maximized Office 2007 gets cut off on multi-monitor setup with different resolutions

  I've got an external monitor plugged into my laptop that I like to use for typing up documents, but I've noticed that when Word is maximized it gets cut off at where the primary monitor's bounds are. Is this a bug in Wine (i'm using version 1.3.32), or with my Window Manager (metacity with compositing enabled, version 2.34.1), with my graphics drivers (nouveau) or something else? I know that I can fix it by unmaximizing (it doesn't get cut off and I can resize to the entirety of the second monitor), but it keeps on maximizing itself as it (rightly so) knows that it should be taking up the entire screen. I don't really want to use the "Emulate a virtual desktop feature", I would prefer to find the source of this issue.

• How to remove tearing in videos with Nvidia driver?

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 as my HTPC OS on ION board. Tearing was always a big problem but this guide (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/01/how-to-fix-video-tearing-in-videos-nvidia-ubuntu/) used to solve it in previous versions. I mean it used to because it doesn't solve it anymore. I tried making same changes (although compiz config is little different and same options are in different panels) but with no success. I also tried to manually set resolution and refresh rate of HDTV in nvidia settings - no changes at all. I know that open source drivers would solve a problem but it's not an option because I need VDPAU acceleration. I've also read that completely disabling of Composite solves the problem - can't do that because compizconfig-settings-manager crashes on attempt. • Acer Aspire One 722 broadcom 4313 wifi

  I had an Acer Aspire One 722 with the Atheros Wifi card and it worked fine on 11.04. So we bought 200 of them for our school. However these all came with the Broadcom BCM4313 wireless card and there are issues. It is using the brcmsmac driver and they connect initially. However after a time (sometimes just a few webpages) some of them lose connection. However, they still have an IP and network-manager says they are connected, but no pages load and you can't ping anything on the LAN or internet. A disconnect/reconnect can fix it, but sometimes a restart is required. It happens frequently so is a major issue. Lots of broadcom drivers are blacklisted: bcm43xx, b43, brcm80211. Any ideas or experiences with the broadcom4313 card? Please save these computers from a Windows fate!

• Possible SWITCH Optimization in DAX – #powerpivot #dax #tabular

  In one of the Advanced DAX Workshop I taught this year, I had an interesting discussion about how to optimize a SWITCH statement (which could be frequently used checking a slicer, like in the Parameter Table pattern). Let’s start with the problem. What happen when you have such a statement? Sales :=     SWITCH (         VALUES ( Period[Period] ),         "Current", [Internet Total Sales],         "MTD", [MTD Sales],         "QTD", [QTD Sales],         "YTD", [YTD Sales],          BLANK ()     ) The SWITCH statement is in reality just syntax sugar for a nested IF statement. When you place such a measure in a pivot table, for every cell of the pivot table the IF options are evaluated. In order to optimize performance, the DAX engine usually does not compute cell-by-cell, but tries to compute the values in bulk-mode. However, if a measure contains an IF statement, every cell might have a different execution path, so the current implementation might evaluate all the possible IF branches in bulk-mode, so that for every cell the result from one of the branches will be already available in a pre-calculated dataset. The price for that could be high. If you consider the previous Sales measure, the YTD Sales measure could be evaluated for all the cells where it’s not required, and also when YTD is not selected at all in a Pivot Table. The actual optimization made by the DAX engine could be different in every build, and I expect newer builds of Tabular and Power Pivot to be better than older ones. However, we still don’t live in an ideal world, so it could be better trying to help the engine finding a better execution plan. However, if you examine with the profiler what happens, there is a different story. Every original IF’s execution branch is now a separate CALCULATE statement, which applies a filter that does not execute the required measure calculation if the result of the FILTER is empty. I used the ‘Internet Sales’[Order Quantity] column in this example just because in Adventure Works it has only one value (every row has 1): in the real world, you should use a column that has a very low number of distinct values, or use a column that has always the same value for every row (so it will be compressed very well!). Because the value –1 is never used in this column, the IF comparison in the filter discharge all the values iterated in the filter if the selection does not match with the desired value. I hope to have time in the future to write a longer article about this optimization technique, but in the meantime I’ve seen this optimization has been useful in many other implementations. Please write your feedback if you find scenarios (in both Power Pivot and Tabular) where you obtain performance improvements using this technique!

• How to upgrade server from 8.10 to newer version?

  I have a server still running Ubuntu 8.10. If I run apt-get update I get a bunch of 404 errors on the packages. I've asked a few questions on Server Fault but got nowhere. Here's what I've done: Run apt-get update which returns errors like: Err http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages 404 Not Found [and same for many other packages] Run do-release-upgrade which returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release Failed Upgrade tool signature Failed Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'jaunty.tar.gz' Failed to extract Extracting the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. Edited /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and changed from Prompt=normal to Prompt=lts (as suggested here). Running do-release-upgrade after this returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release current dist not found in meta-release file No new release found So basically, it seems like I cannot upgrade because my current distro is out of date and not supported. Is there a way to upgrade direct to 10.x or 11.x?

• How to download kde or gnome from synaptic for offline installation

  I know how to install GNOME 3 and KDE using apt-get. But i want to know how to, only download, from synaptic package manager, these shells. When i search for kubuntu-desktop in synaptic then the download file shows nearly 4MB but i clearly remember the actual size was near 100 mb. Just for information both are already installed in my laptop. So the question is - How to download the actuall 100 mb KUbuNTU-DESKTOP so that i can just, without any hesitation install it in offline computer which is using ubuntu 12.04. Same for the GNOME 3. Please help me out !
