• DirectShow Filter I wrote dies after 10-24 seconds in Skype video call

  I've written a DirectShow push filter for use with Skype using Delphi Pro 6 and the DSPACK DirectShow library. In preview mode, when you test a video input device in the Skype client Video Settings window, my filter works flawlessly. I can leave it up and running for many minutes without an error. However when I start a video call after 10 to 24 seconds, never longer, the video feed freezes. The call continues fine with the call duration counter clicking away the seconds, but the video feed is dead, stuck on whatever frame the freeze happened (although after a long while it turns black which I believe means Skype has given up on the filter). I tried attaching to the process from my debugger with a breakpoint literally set on every method call and none of them are hit once the freeze takes place. It's as if the thread that makes the DirectShow FillBuffer() call to my filter on behalf of Skype is dead or has been shutdown. I can't trace my filter in the debugger because during a Skype call I get weird int 1 and int 3 debugger hard interrupt calls when a Skype video call is in progress. This behavior happens even with my standard web cam input device selected and my DirectShow filter completely unregistered as a ActiveX server. I suspect it might be some "anti-debugging" code since it doesn't happen in video input preview mode. Either way, that is why I had to attach to the process after the fact to see if my FillBuffer() called was still being called and instead discovered that appears to be dead. Note, my plain vanilla USB web cam's DirectShow filter does not exhibit the freezing behavior and works fine for many minutes. There's something about my filter that Skype doesn't like. I've tried Sleep() statements of varying intervals, no Sleep statements, doing virtually nothing in the FillBuffer() call. Nothing helps. If anyone has any ideas on what might be the culprit here, I'd like to know. Thanks, Robert

• Vista 64-bits development tools

  Well, okay. There's Visual Studio 2008 and Embarcadero Delphi/Studio that are both able to create 64-bits .NET applications for Vista. And of course a lot of 32-bits applications will run on 64-bits Vista. If not, it's always possible to install VMWare to create a virtual 32-bits Windows XP system to run 32-bits applications. So, plenty of options. But what I would like to see is a list of true 64-bits applications for Windows Vista and better. So if you know any useful 64-bits product, please share! (Especially compilers that generate native 64-bits code.) Tools would basically be anything that would make development a bit easier. Thus, debugging tools, image processing tools to create icons and bitmaps, hex editors to check the contents of binary files, XML editors to change XML files, etc. The tools from SysInternals, for example, seem to provide 64-bits versions or even support 64-bits systems natively. But how about all those other editors, viewers, browsers and other tools that we developers like to use? A 64-bits version of the Norton Commander/Midnight Commander or other file managers would be nice too. And with compilers, how about COBOL/ForTran/ADA/SmallTalk/Lisp/Whatever compiler/languages for Vista? I would just like to see a complete list of anything useful for 64-bits development.

• Different ways to query this search in SQL?

  I am teaching myself MS-SQL and I am trying to find different ways to find the Count of Paid and Unpaid Claims for 2012 grouped by Region from these 3 tables. If there is a returned date, the claim is unpaid if the returned date is null then the claim is paid. I will attach the code I have ran, but I am not sure if there are better ways to do it. Thanks. • Flash - Uploading to and Downloading from localhost

  I have an online flash application that acts as a front end for a server application built in delphi. The server can be installed/used on a remote computer or a personal version can be downloaded and the Flash app pointed at localhost to use it. However, Flash has issues with using the POST and GET functions on the localhost, which makes uploading data files and downloading results files difficult. To get past the difficulty with downloading results files I'm planning to just have the server app serve the results file as an attachment and have the Flash app open the address of the file up in another browser window using external interface. First off, is this likely to cause similar security issues? I.E. Flash will see "localhost" in the external interface call and stop it from working the same as when I try to use POST/GET functions with localhost? Secondly, for upload this seems just a bit little trickier, I'm planning on doing something similar, having flash use external interface to open a php script for a file upload. Is this feasible and, again, will Flash still have security issues? Lastly, if anyone knows how to get flash to execute POST and GET functions with localhost addresses, I'd love to have that information to avoid all this jumping through hoops.

• Suggestions for entering mobile development -- pure iPhone SDK, Andorid SDK. Mono Touch or Titanium?

  I am entering mobile development. I have been working primarily in .NET since 1.0 came out in beta. Before that, I was mostly a C++ and Delphi guy and still dabble in C++ from time to time. I do web apps quite a bit so I am reasonably proficient with Javascript, JQuery and CSS. I have also done a few Java applications. I started web programming with CGI and live mostly in the ASP.NET MVC world these days. I am trying to decide on which platform/OS and tool to select. I am concerned with the size of the market available for my applications as well as the marketibility of the skills I will pick up. The apps I have in mind would work on both phones and pads. Some aspects of what I have in mind will play better on the bigger screens that will be available on pads. Here are the options I am considering: Apple iPhone/iPad using pure Apple SDK (Objective-C) Apple iPhone/iPad using Mono Touch (C#) Android using pure Android SDK (Java) Multiple platforms using something like Titanium to generate native apps from web technologies (HTML, CSS and Javascript) Multiple platforms using HTML5 web applications that run in the browser (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Which option would you choose? Do you have a different suggestion? What are the pros and cons?

• Eclipse and Cassandra

  I've searched various websites for instructions on how to link 'Cassandra' and 'Eclipse' and followed directions to the last detail in several sites. For some reason, while using Git Bash, I cant get through the 'ant build', via instruction in said mentioned locations across the web. In some location's its easy, just make sure you have; 1. Apache Cassandra source 2. Apache Ant 3. Git So, yeah I've downloaded all the above, tried the same directory, different directories, etc., although still unable to get past the middle step of 'ant build'. • Ruby open-uri open method loses file extension opening images

  I'm using ruby 1.9.2 along with Rails 3.1.4 and Paperclip 2.4.5. My issue is trying to save a paperclip attachment from a URI loses the file extension and saves the file without one resulting in issues with things like fancybox that require an extension. Some example code: uri = "http://featherfiles.aviary.com/2012-06-13/bbe5f0de1/0c5a672b88ea47ecb4631ac173e27430.png" open(uri) #=> #<File:/var/folders/zc/d69gxhzx10x_bvjrkqgyjgxr0000gn/T/open-uri20120613-27204-i6cldv> Because there is no extension on the temp file paperclip is saving the file without one resulting in issues. Has anyone run into this issue? I've seen multiple answers about using paperclip to store images from a URI but none seem to address the same problem we're running

• How to import a class from default package

  Hi, I am using Eclipse 3.5 and I have created a project with some package structure along with the default package. I have one class in default package - Calculations.java and I want to make the use of that class in any of the package (for instance in com.company.calc). When I try to make the use of the class which is default package, its giving me compile error. Its not able to recognise the class in default package. Where is a problem? Calculations.java - source code public class Calculations{ native public int Calculate(int contextId); native public double GetProgress(int contextId); static { System.loadLibrary("Calc"); } } I can put my class in any other package. This class has some native method which is implemented in Delphi . If I put that class in any of the folder,I will have to make the change that DLL which I want to avoid(really - I can not). • Not able to override CSS within IFrame

  I am using disqus comments for my jekyll blog with some CSS styles overriden in my stylesheet and used to work perfectly. Recently, disqus has introduced a new UI for their comments system which has completely broken the font colors. Since my site has dark background, I am trying to apply styles based on new disqus HTML structure generated. However, it seems that none of my styles get applied. It seems that is because disqus is loaded within iframe. Any ideas how can I fix the font colors. • SQL Server: What locale should be used to format numeric values into SQL Server format?

  It seems that SQL Server does not accept numbers formatted using any particular locale. It also doesn't support locales that have digits other than 0-9. For example, if the current locale is bengali, then the number 123456789 would come out as "?????????". And that's just the digits, nevermind what the digit grouping would be. But the same problem happens for numbers in the Invariant locale, which formats numbers as "123,456,789", which SQL Server won't accept. Is there a culture that matches what SQL Server accepts for numeric values? Or will i have to create some custom "sql server" culture, generating rules for that culture myself from lower level formatting routines? If i was in .NET (which i'm not), i could peruse the Standard Numeric Format strings. Of the format codes available in .NET: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF Only 6 accept all numeric types: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF And of those only 2 generate string representations, in the en-US locale anyway, that would be accepted by SQL Server: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF Of the remaining two, fixed is dependant on the locale's digits, rather than the number being used, leaving General g format: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF And i can't even say for certain that the g format won't add digit groupings (e.g. 1,234). Is there a locale that formats numbers in the way SQL Server expects? Is there a .NET format code? A java format code? A Delphi format code? A VB format code? • ImageButton OnClick Event not firing

  Hi All, I am really confused about this one. I have some code that runs fine on my development server but I am now trying to get the site working on the sales guys new laptop. None of the image buttons on the website seem to be working for him (they just redirect me back to the websites homepage) whereas they used to on his previous machine. The only difference between each machine is that his old one was Vista and the new one is Windows 7. Has anyone come accross this issue? • Properly design a code editor application

  I'm working on personal project which is basically a code editor. Imagine standard File menu with menu items New, Open, Save, Save As, Save All, Close, Close All. I'm stuck with proper design. Currently I have: A Document class which represents a document - code editing control, respective tab in tab bar and various properties such as Caption, Filename, IsModified etc. A Documents class which represents all open documents. Contains methods like New, Open(FileName), ... The problem is that I can't figure out which class / menu command is responsible for which tasks. Where is best place for this supporting code, in menu command, rewrite Documents.Open and put it there? The same with Save actions. Which is responsible for saving? Is it Documents class which uses Document.Editor.SaveToFile(FileName) or better create Save method in Document class?   I am developing a win32 windows application with Delphi and MS SQL Server. it works fine in LAN but I am trying to add the support for SQL Server remote connections (= working with a DB that can be accessed with an external IP, as described in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;914277). Basically I have a Table in DB where I keep the DocumentID, the document description and the Document path (like \FILESERVER\MyApplicationDocuments\45.zip). Of course \FILESERVER is a local (LAN) path for the server but not for the client (as I am now trying to add the support for remote connections). So I need a way to access \FILESERVER even if of course I cannot see it in LAN. I found the following T-SQL code snippet that is perfect for the "download trick": SELECT BulkColumn as MyFile FROM OPENROWSET(BULK '\FILESERVER\MyApplicationDocuments\45.zip' , SINGLE_BLOB) AS X With the code above I can download a file on the client. But how to upload it? I need an "Uppload trick" to be able to insert new files, but also to delete or replace existing files. Can anyone suggest? If a trick is not available could you suggest an alternative? Like an extended stored procedure or calling some .net assembly from the server.

  When running this XNA application it should display a rotated rectangle that moves from top-left corner to bottom-right corner. It looks like my F# version is noticeably much slower. • Unable to Calculate Position within Owner-Draw Text

  I'm trying to use Visual Studio 2012 to create a Windows Forms application that can place the caret at the current position within a owner-drawn string. However, I've been unable to find a way to accurately calculate that position. I've done this successfully before in C++. I've now tried numerous methods in C#. Originally, I tried using .NET classes to determine the correct position, but then I tried accessing the Windows API directly. In some cases, I came close, but after some time I still cannot place the caret accurately. I've created a small test program and posted key parts below. I've also posted the entire project here. The exact font used is not important to me; however, my application assumes a mono-spaced font. Any help is appreciated. • Is C++ (one of) the best language to learn at first

  C++ is one of the most used programming language in the world since like 25+ years. My first job as programmer was in C++ and I coded in C++ everyday for nearly 4 years. Now I do mostly PHP, but I will forever cherish this C++ background. C++ has helped me understand many "under the hood" features/behaviors/restrictions of many other (and different) programming languages like PHP and Delphi. I'm a full time programmer for 6+ years now and since I have a quite varied programming background I often get questions by "newbies" as where to start to become a "good" programmer. I think C++ is one of the best language to start with because it gives you a real usefull experience that will last and will teach you how things work under the hood. It's not the easier one to learn for a newbie, but in my opinion it's one that will reward in the long term. I would like to know your opinion on this matter to add to my arguments when I guide "newbies". After this introduction, here's my question : Is C++ (one of) the best language to learn at first for you. Since it's subjective, I've marked this question as community wiki. EDIT: This question is not about why Java (or C# or any other language) is better than C++ to start with, it's about what's make C++ a good choice or not a good choice to learn as one of your firsts languages. For example, for me C++ made me understand how the memory works. Now today in many languages everything is managed by the garbadge collector and some people don't even know that. I'm glad I know how it works underneath and I think it can help you to write better code.

• Why are (almost) all the on-line games written in ActionScript (Flash) not Java?

  I absolutely love good defender games (e.g. Gemcraft, Protector: reclaiming the throne) as they can be intellectually quite challenging; it's like playing chess but a little less thinking a bit more action. Sadly, there are not that many good ones out there and I thought I would create one myself and share it with the rest of the world by making it available on-line. I have never worked with ActionScript but when it comes to on-line games, this is the main choice. I have tried to find a decent 2D game in the form of a Java applet but to no avail. Why is this so? I could write the game, most comfortably, in Delphi for Win32 but then people would need to download the executable, which could deter some form downloading it, and also it would only work on Windows. I am also familiar with Java, having worked with Java for the last four years or so. Although I don't have much experience with games programming. Should I note be deterred by the fact that all online games are written for in Flash and create my defender game as a Java applet, or should I consider learning ActionScript and games development for the ActionScript Virtual Machine (AS3 looks very much like Java... but still, it's an entirely new technology to me and I might never use it professionally.) Could you, please, just answer the the question in the title? Why Flash, not Java applets? Is it only 'politics'?

  I know that data members are saved to disk but I was wondering whether object's/class' methods are saved in binary format as well? Because I found some contradictionary info, for example: Ivor Horton: "Class objects contain function members as well as data members, and all the members, both data and functions, have access specifiers; therefore, to record objects in an external file, the information written to the file must contain complete specifications of all the class structures involved." and: Are methods also serialized along with the data members in .NET? Thus: are method's assembly instructions (opcodes and operands) stored to disk as well? Just like a precompiled LIB or DLL? During the DOS ages I used assembly so now and then. As far as I remember from Delphi and the following site (answer by dan04): Are methods also serialized along with the data members in .NET? sizeof(<OBJECT or CLASS>) will give the size of all data members together (no methods/procedures). Also a nice C example is given there with data and members declared in one class/struct but at runtime these methods are separate procedures acting on a struct of data. However, I think that later class/object implementations like Pascal's VMT may be different in memory.
