• NDepend 4 – First Steps

  Introduction Thanks to Patrick Smacchia I had the chance to test NDepend 4. I can only say: awesome! This will be the first of a series of posts on NDepend, where I will talk about my discoveries. Keep in mind that I am just starting to use it, so more experienced users may find these too basic, I just hope I don’t say anything foolish! I must say that I am in no way affiliated with NDepend and I never actually met Patrick. Installation No installation program – a curious decision, I’m not against it -, just unzip the files to a folder and run the executable. It will optionally register itself with Visual Studio 2008, 2010 and 11 as well as RedGate’s Reflector; also, it automatically looks for updates. NDepend can either be used as a stand-alone program (with or without a GUI) or from within Visual Studio or Reflector. Getting Started One thing that really pleases me is the Getting Started section of the stand-alone, with links to pages on NDepend’s web site, featuring detailed explanations, which usually include screenshots and small videos (<5 minutes). There’s also an How do I with hierarchical navigation that guides us to through the major features so that we can easily find what we want. Usage There are two basic ways to use NDepend: Analyze .NET solutions, projects or assemblies; Compare two versions of the same assembly. I have so far not used NDepend to compare assemblies, so I will first talk about the first option. After selecting a solution and some of its projects, it generates a single HTML page with an highly detailed report of the analysis it produced. This includes some metrics such as number of lines of code, IL instructions, comments, types, methods and properties, the calculation of the cyclomatic complexity, coupling and lots of others indicators, typically grouped by type, namespace and assembly. The HTML also includes some nice diagrams depicting assembly dependencies, type and method relative proportions (according to the number of IL instructions, I guess) and assembly analysis relating to abstractness and stability. Useful, I would say. Then there’s the rules; NDepend tests the target assemblies against a set of more than 120 rules, grouped in categories Code Quality, Object Oriented Design, Design, Architecture and Layering, Dead Code, Visibility, Naming Conventions, Source Files Organization and .NET Framework Usage. The full list can be configured on the application, and an explanation of each rule can be found on the web site. Rules can be validated, violated and violated in a critical manner, and the HTML will contain the violated rules, their queries – more on this later - and results. The HTML uses some nice JavaScript effects, which allow paging and sorting of tables, so its nice to use. Similar to the rules, there are some queries that display results for a number (about 200) questions grouped as Object Oriented Design, API Breaking Changes (for assembly version comparison), Code Diff Summary (also for version comparison) and Dead Code. The difference between queries and rules is that queries are not classified as passes, violated or critically violated, just present results. The queries and rules are expressed through CQLinq, which is a very powerful LINQ derivative specific to code analysis. All of the included rules and queries can be enabled or disabled and new ones can be added, with intellisense to help. Besides the HTML report file, the NDepend application can be used to explore all analysis results, compare different versions of analysis reports and to run custom queries. Comparison to Other Analysis Tools Unlike StyleCop, NDepend only works with assemblies, not source code, so you can’t expect it to be able to enforce brackets placement, for example. It is more similar to FxCop, but you don’t have the option to analyze at the IL level, that is, other that the number of IL instructions and the complexity. To do this, you are retrieving data directly from the Essbase databases related to your HPCM model. For information, running reports is covered in Chapter 9 of the HPCM User documentation. The aim of this blog is to provide a quick guide to finding this data for reporting in the HPCM generated Essbase database in v11.1.2.2.x of HPCM. In order to retrieve data from an HPCM generated Essbase database, it is important to understand each of the following dimensions in the Essbase database and where data is located within them: Measures dimension – identifies Measures AllocationType dimension – identifies Direct Allocation Data or Genealogy Allocation data Point Of View (POV) dimensions – there must be at least one, maximum of four. Business dimensions: Stage Business dimensions – these will be identified by the Stage prefix. Intra-Stage dimension – these will be identified by the _Intra suffix. Examine the date and time on task area to see when, if any, calculations were run and what choices were used (e.g. Genealogy choices) If data does not exist in places where they are expecting, it could be that No calculations/genealogy were run No calculations were successfully run The model/data at feeder location were either absent or incompatible, resulting in no allocation e.g no driver data. Smartview Invocation from HPCM From version 11.1.2.2.350 of HPCM (this version will be GA shortly), it is possible to directly invoke Smartview from HPCM. There is guided navigation before the Smartview invocation and it is then possible to see the selected value(s) in SmartView. • Test iPhone app on iPad mini?

  I have developed an iPhone app, right now I only need a device for testing. I have 300$, and two choices - second hand iPhone 4, or brand new iPad mini. The better choice obviously is the iPad, but is it sufficient for testing iPhone apps on? On the iPad, iPhone apps can run just fine in 2X mode, but are there any differences between the app performance on iPhone and iPad (except the chipset). Should I test my app on actual iPhone, or the iPad will suffice? My app is RSS reader, not some game, so I think everything will be fine with testing on iPad mini. If I buy the iPad I will find some friends iPhone 4/3gs running iOS 5.1 (because my app's deployment target is 5.1, and the iPad comes with 6.0), but of course I can't extensively test on this iPhone. • Uninstall ubuntu from external hard drive + remove bootloader from internal hd

  I have created a bootable usb stick with linuxlive and Ubuntu.I then tried to install ubuntu on my external harddrive. However I guess I wrongly picked the drive where the boot section is installed, it now is installed on my internal (C:) drive. When I open the bios bootsequence it says Ubuntu 2 times? As if the boot is installed twice? I'd like to uninstall Ubuntu from my external drive but most important: I don't want Grub to be start up on my PC. I tried booting in Windows 8 recovery mode and used the following commands: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot However the ubuntu choices wont disappear? I then tried to add bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd to the commands but somehow this wont work either. Anyone got some ideas? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Bart

  I have been using Java 6 on Ubuntu 11.10, but now I want to update to version 7. I've installed version 7 via PPA as described here. If I run sudo update-alternatives --config java I get the following output: There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java). Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java 64 auto mode 1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java 63 manual mode * 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java 64 manual mode Similarly, if I run: sudo update-alternatives --config javac I get the output: Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/bin/javac 64 auto mode 1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/javac 63 manual mode * 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/bin/javac 64 manual mode So it looks like version 7 is already the default. But if I run either java -version or javac -version The output indicates that version 6 is still the default. How can I set the default to version 7?

• How to Disable the Auto-Complete Feature in Outlook 2013

  The Auto-Complete feature in Outlook 2013 automatically fills in names and email addresses for you when entering them in the To or Cc fields. Based on the characters you start to enter, Outlook displays a list of possible choices that match what you’ve entered. You can then either click the desired email address from the list or press Enter to insert the email address in the list. The Auto-Complete feature can save you time if you compose a lot of emails and have a lot of contacts in your address book. However, you do have to be careful when using the feature, so you don’t accidentally select the wrong email address and send an email to the wrong person. If you find the feature irritating and don’t want to use it, you can easily disable it. To disable the Auto-Complete feature, open Outlook and click the FILE tab.

• Java2Days 2012 Trip Report

  Java2Days 2012 was held in beautiful Sofia, Bulgaria on October 25-26. For those of you not familiar with it, this is the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region. It is an excellent effort by admirable husband and wife team Emo Abadjiev and Iva Abadjieva as well as the rest of the Java2Days team including Yoana Ivanova and Nadia Kostova. Thanks to their hard work, the conference continues to grow vigorously with almost a thousand enthusiastic, bright young people attending this year and no less than three tracks on Java, the Cloud and Mobile. The conference is a true gem in this region of the world and I am very proud to have been a part of it again, along with the other world class speakers the event rightfully attracts. It was my honor to present the first talk of the conference. It was a full-house session on Java EE 7 and 8 titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond". The talk was primarily along the same lines as Arun Gupta's JavaOne 2012 technical keynote. I covered the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JCache, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1 and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possible contents of Java EE 8. My stretch goal was to gather some feedback on some open issues in the Java EE EG (more on that soon) but I ran out of time in the short format forty-five minute session. The talk was received well and I had some pretty good discussions afterwards. The slides for the talk are here: JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond from reza_rahman To my delight, the Java2Days folks were very interested in my domain-driven design/Java EE 6 talk (titled "Domain Driven Design with Java EE 6"). I've had this talk in my inventory for a long time now but it always gets overridden by less theoretical talks on APIs, tools, etc. The talk has three parts -- a brief overview of DDD theory, mapping DDD to Java EE and actual running DDD code in Java EE 6/GlassFish. For the demo, I converted the well-known DDD sample application (http://dddsample.sourceforge.net/) written mostly in Spring 2 and Hibernate 2 to Java EE 6. My eventual plan is to make the code available via a top level java.net project. Even despite the broad topic and time constraints, the talk went very well. It was a full house, the Q & A was excellent and one of the other speakers even told me they thought this was the best talk of the conference! The talk covers the basic of WebSocket, the JSR 356 API and a simple demo using Tyrus/GlassFish. The talk went very well and there were some very good questions afterwards. • How can I use the Windows key?

  The Windows key seems to not have any use in Ubuntu, but since I'm just coming from Windows I'm used to this key having some function. How can I make good use of the Windows key in Ubuntu? I've seen that I can remap keys in SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutOptionsAlt/Win key behavior, but I have no idea what the choices meta, super, hyper mean. The help button in this dialog doesn't give any specifics about them. I've experimented a little and found that meta seems to have some use, like Win+M = Me menu, or Win+S is the shutdown menu, but for some keys (B, I) it's more like Ctrl (bold, italic). Haven't found any further. What would a useful setting be for a Linux newbie?

• Is there any reason to use C++ instead of C, Perl, Python, etc.?

  As a Linux (server side) developer, I don't know where and why should I use C++. When I'm going to performance, the first and last choice is C. When "performance" isn't the main issue, programming languages like Perl and Python would be good choices. Almost all of open source applications I know in this area has been written in C, Perl and Python, Bash script, AWK and even PHP, but no one goes to use C++. I'm not discussing about some other areas like GUI or web application, I'm just talking about Linux and about CLI and daemons. Is there any satisfiable reason to use C++?

• Low graphics mode on Ubuntu 12.04 with Intel Graphics

  When I boot, my computer just tells me it can't detect graphic card (or something else) settings and it has to use the low graphics mode. Then it gives me four choices, but doesn't let me choose any of them. I can get my computer to boot by going to some sort of terminal mode and then typing sudo gdm. The other graphics manager I have is lightdm. I originally had the nVidia propriety driver, and I've tried bumblebee. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M is my graphics card. Is there any way to fix this so I can use lightdm again?

I go to the 3rd step which is the preparing to install ubuntu . and it check everything is going right ,no red x marks. and below the dialogue there is optional choices download update while installing install third-party software and here is the problem If I choose any of those or if I don't and just continue the mouse pointer is just freezing for hours and I don't access the next step I hope you got what I mean and thank you .

• How do you make comp.sci students and future programmers aware of the various software licenses and the nuances of it ?

  To be specific How would you include it as part of curriculum ? Would it be too boring to just introduce them as a pure law subject ? Are there any course structure available or can we derive one ? What are the books that could be used ? I would like to see that - after going through the course - candidate is well aware of "what software licenses are and what they are good for". Various implications of not knowing it in it's proper sense. What licenses they should use for their own code. What to consider when they are trying to use certain libraries or tools in their project and gauge risks/rewards associated with it. The idea is to let them make informed choices when they are professionals/practitioners in field of programming and not make them substitute for a lawyer or even a paralegal who is going to fight the case or draft things.

  I registered a domain with Namecheap.com, and started the Google Apps registration process. After the initial data filling, google apps wishes me to prove the ownership of a domain, and has given me 4 choices: Add a DNS record to your domain's configuration Link to your Google Analytics account Upload an HTML file to your server Add a meta tag to your site's home page What is the differences between these, and how do I (if someone knows perhaps how to do it on Namecheap, it would be even better) complete this step in the process? • Have you ever used a non mainstream language in a project? Why?

  I was thinking about my academic experience with Smalltalk (well, Squeak) a while ago and whether I would like to use it for something, and it got me thinking: sure, it's as good and capable as any popular language, and it has some nice ideas, but there are certain languages that are already well entrenched in certain niches of programming (C is for systems programming, Java is for portability, and so on...), and Smalltalk and co. don't seem to have any obvious differentiating features to make them the right choice under certain circumstances, or at least not as far as I can tell, and when you add to it the fact that it's harder to find programmers who know it it adds all sorts of other problems for the organization itself. So if you ever worked on a project where a non-mainstream language (like Smalltalk) was used over a more mainstream one, what was the reason for it? To clarify: I'd like to focus this on imperative languages, since other paradigms like functional and logic programming language, while not necessarily mainstream, can still be good choices for certain projects for obvious reasons.

• Will Unity allow users to change the color/appearance of the top-Panel?

  I'm very excited by the functional design principles and keyboard shortcuts that are being implemented for Unity. And function of use is more important to me than looks. However, after experiencing the aesthetic beauty of the display of the top panel in gnome-shell, I was wondering if users would be able to alter the color of Unity's top panel? IMHO it does not look as good as the gnome-shell implementation (or mac OS X/iPad). I think if an alternate color/appearance were chosen for the panel, it would make a big difference aesthetically. Is there a way to make it Black like gnome-shell? Or are the color choices limited to theme-designs as pointed out in this answer? For efficiency and clarity, the Panel should be better differentiated from application controls. The panel should be a different color because it has a "constant (always present) state," unlike application controls. For contrast and easy-recognition, I would like to make the Panel black (like gnome-shell) but make the application controls (e.g., those of Firefox) "Inverted"

• How to choose the right web development language for my app without much programming experience?

  I have my own idea for a web application, and I am not a programmer. The application will work similar to Facebook and Twitter, profiles and feeds. I have learned some computer science theory, all the way up to OOP, but have no practical experience.
